ARTS CENTER OF COASTAL CAROLINA
Fall 2023

Fall 2023
Only 5% of hospitals in the U.S. have earned the Top Hospital award for patient safety and quality — and Beaufort Memorial is one of them.
We all want access to top healthcare, because we know that “top” means a commitment to pursuing and achieving the best, which is especially important when you’re looking for medical services and care. And the good news: it’s right in our backyard.
We’re proud to be among the select group of hospitals recognized by the national hospital safety watchdog organization The Leapfrog Group for putting patients and their safety first every day. Not only does it mean our team is focused on you, it means you can feel confident in trusting us when it matters most.

Yes, it’s a new season and one of the most beautiful times to be on Hilton Head Island – fall, of course! But it’s also a “cool” new season at the Arts Center, with September beginning our exciting New Year!
We are kicking it all off with the murdermystery-comedy Clue! We chose the show for so many reasons – it’s fun, fast-paced, and guaranteed to make you laugh, and who doesn’t need that right about now? What we didn’t expect, however, was the cult following of this show/movie/game! A number of patrons are telling us how thrilled they are we are producing it! We even have one group of 100 (yes, 100) coming to see it the very first week!
A reminder to those who know, and a note of interest to those who don’t, what we do at the Arts Center isn’t bringing in theatrical productions, rather it’s producing them … that includes casting actors in New York City, imagining and building the sets, designing costumes and lighting, hiring the director, choreographer, and musical director, housing the actors and creative team on our beautiful island, rehearsing, and then finally offering you the magic of theatre that you witness on our stage!
So much goes into each show before the curtain rises! We hope you’ll keep that in mind as you join us for all of our five productions in our 23-24 Theater Series. After our season opener, we have Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn; in February, it’s August Wilson’s Fences; then, in spring, get ready for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical; and for summer, the ubiquitous Fosse-fave Chicago!
Each season, we also program world-class presenting artists, outreach programs and festivals, and year-round educational offerings. In essence, we always have something going on here! We hope you’ll join our email list, follow us on social media, and frequent our website – artshhi.com – to continually stay up-to-date on everything going on!
We are delighted that you’re here to experience one of our region’s greatest cultural treasures … the award-winning Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU BACK “ALL SEASON LONG!”
Jeffrey S. Reeves President/CEOThese are the integral questions known by anyone who has ever played a game of Clue, one of the most popular board games ever made. First devised in England and imported to the U.S. by Parker Brothers, the crime-solving game has spawned numerous international editions, books, spin-off games, a popular 1985 movie, and now, perhaps best of all, a new comedic play.
The show, based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn and written by Sandy Rustin, is the Arts Center’s Season Opener that runs through October 29.
As anyone knows who has ever attempted to determine whether it was Colonel Mustard with a wrench in the library, or Miss Scarlet with a rope in billiard room, or maybe Mrs. Peacock with a candlestick in the kitchen, Clue is all about campy, zany fun! There are no real-life consequences or grief. It’s a witty, lighthearted, retro romp filled with colorful characters in a creepy old manor house — during a terrible storm, of course.
The movie with Tim Curry, Madeline Khan, and Lesley Ann Warren upped the campy aspect of the game. The new stage version takes the laughs even further. Yes, there is a murder. Several, in fact. And yes, cast members — and the audience — spend the breezy 90-minute run trying to guess “whodunit?”
Director Whitaker Gannon (Red, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Little Shop of Horrors) tells us, “The thrills in Clue are of the hilarious, not scary, variety. And, the material lends itself to more fast-paced physical comedy when done on stage versus film.”
This top-notch cast is up the challenge of the rapid-fire, twisty dialogue, and wild antics. Danny Hayward (recently seen in Company) is brilliantly cast as the archly humorous and scheming butler Wadsworth, who knows that all the guests invited by the mysterious Mr. Boddy to his manor house have more than a few secrets to hide!
Tell your friends to see it, but don’t give them a single clue whodunit! Tickets may be purchased by visiting tickets.artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS (2787).
“TREMENDOUS FUN AWAITS WITH THIS MURDER MYSTERY/COMEDY!”
We are thrilled to announce the Arts Center’s amazing, new Theater Season, running from September 2023 – August 2024. It’s an outstanding line-up of cult favorites and Broadway hits, offering something for everyone.
Fall kicks off our season with the hilarious CLUE (September 27 – October 29, 2023), an exciting new murder-mystery-comedy with a cast full of colorful characters. Six guests are invited to a dinner party thrown by an anonymous host. They are given aliases and though they are discouraged from revealing personal information, it is soon discovered that all of them have fallen victim to the same blackmailer, their very host of the evening.
What follows is a madcap, slapstick evening full of murder, mystery, and laughs as they seek to puzzle out the culprit amongst criminals. A blast from beginning to end!
The holiday timeslot brings a family-friendly musical extravaganza, perfect for getting in the spirit of the season! Based on the classic holiday film by the same name, the Arts Center is delighted to produce IRVING BERLIN’S HOLIDAY INN (November 29December 24, 2023).
When singer-songwriter Jim Hardy tires of showbiz, he decides to leave the bright lights of Broadway behind for a calm life in a Connecticut farmhouse. At first, he greets his new life with enthusiasm, but, just as he starts
to think farm life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, he meets Linda, a spunky school teacher harboring immense talent and big dreams.
Together, they bring life back to the farm by transforming it into the Holiday Inn, a lively venue for festive performances celebrating the red letter days on the calendar. With dance numbers galore and a score packed with classics like “Blue Skies,” ”Heat Wave,” “Shaking the Blues Away,” and the beloved “White Christmas,” this heartwarming story will delight the whole family.
Our Winter production is one of the most important works in American Theatre: AUGUST WILSON’S FENCES (January 31 –February 24, 2024). This gripping story takes place in 1957 in Pittsburgh and follows Troy Maxson, a 53-year-old man who struggles to provide for his wife and son in a time when slavery is long over but the civil rights movement has still not come to fruition.
In his younger days, Troy was an astoundingly talented baseball player, but wasn’t able to make it to the Major Leagues due to the color of his skin. Now his son wants to play baseball, and Troy’s frustrations are revived. Wilson’s play, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987, deals with dreams deferred and family relationships.
Many believe Fences to be Wilson’s greatest triumph. It has been performed on Broadway, in national and international
theaters, receiving just about every award a play, playwright, or its performers can merit. We are thrilled to be producing this seminal piece.
MUSICAL (April 24 – May 26, 2024) is our inspiring spring production. This Tony Award-winning musical tells the true story of Carole King’s meteoric rise to fame as one of the twentieth century’s foremost singersongwriters. We are introduced to Carole when she is 16, pitching her first song to New York music producer Don Kirshner. We follow not only her impressive career as one of the most prolific songwriters ever, but her turbulent and triumphant personal life.
Featuring such unforgettable classics as "You've Got a Friend, "One Fine Day," "So Far Away," "Take Good Care of My Baby," "Up on the Roof," "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," and "Natural Woman," this Tony and Grammy Awardwinning musical phenomenon is filled with the songs you remember and a story you'll never forget.
Summer brings full-on razzle dazzle to the Arts Center stage with our production of CHICAGO (June 26 – August 18, 2024).
Broadway’s longest-running American musical is a dazzling and satirical look at fame, justice, and the media machine.
Set in roaring 20s, and based on real-life murders and trials, Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star who murders her lover and is arrested, despite her attempts to convince her pushover husband, Amos, to lie for her. In jail, Roxie meets her hero, the famed double-murderess and nightclub performer Velma Kelly. When both acquire the same lawyer, tensions flare as they vie for the spotlight-- though instead of onstage, they’re mugging for the flashbulb of the newspaper reporters.
With catchy, sexy music, and a funny, intelligent, and utterly engaging book by John Kander and Bob Fosse, Chicago is a musical spectacular that is as addictive as gossip rags and as unforgettable as any trial of the century.
We hope you’re as excited about the new 2023-24 season as we are! At this time, the only way to secure tickets to all of these shows is with a season subscription. Subscription tickets are also redeemable for our Presenting Artists Series as well, making it the ultimate in flexibility!
See page 21 for your subscription choices. To snag this phenomenal line-up now, call 843-842-ARTS (2787) or visit artshhi.com.
an exciting taste of Broadway comes to the Arts Center as we welcome back The Broadway Tenors! These leading men will dazzle with a spectacular performance filled with beloved Broadway hits from South Pacific, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Jersey Boys, and more.
The Broadway Tenors were created to be Broadway’s international ambassadors bringing together three of New York’s most sought-after leading men, singing the preeminent songs of The Great White Way. The fully-staged, choreographed show features beautifully rendered musical scores and show-stopping medleys arranged exclusively for the The Broadway Tenors.
The celebrated tenors Brent Barrett, John Cudia, and David Burnham will be taking center stage at the Arts Center poised to leave you mesmerized and breathless as they recreate their roles played on Broadway and stages across the world.
The charismatic Barrett made his Broadway and has played the Phantom in numerous companies in the US and Germany, along with “Billy Flynn” in the Tony Award-winning hit Chicago.
With his golden voice, John Cudia holds the distinct honor of being the first and only actor to perform on Broadway as both the Phantom and Jean Valjean. Cudia is now a classical crossover artist singing with opera companies and symphonies.
David Burnham is a force of nature who first gained critical acclaim after replacing Donny Osmond in the National Tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and also was an original Broadway cast member of The Light in the Piazza.
Together these luminous leading men have starred on Broadway and in National Tours with credits that include West Side Story, Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Wicked, Grand Hotel, Kiss Me, Kate, Oklahoma, Jesus Christ Superstar, and the list goes on!
Prepare to become lost in these voices as they fill the theater with the “Music of the Night” on November 7 and 8. Tickets are $63 and may be purchased online at tickets. artshhi.com or by calling the box office at 843-842-ARTS (2787).

Get psyched for an outrageously awesome 80s party for our rad, retro Arts Center spring benefit. So like, tell your BFFs and get ready to get your 80s on! Rock out with a party on the stage with a DJ spinning some gnarly jams!
WOULD LOVE TO ADD YOU TO OUR LIST OF VOLUNTEERS
We are seeking volunteers to be ushers, bartenders, and ticket scanners. It’s a great way to enjoy a show and have fun volunteering!
MAY 17, 2023
Restore Hyper Wellness hosted our Wine & Wellness Happy Hour with delicious vino generously donated by Hilton Head Wine & Spirits. We had many businesses interested to learn more about Arts Center and how to become a business partner. We also had several current & long-standing business partners represented: Restore, Spinnaker Resorts, Pink Magazine, and Courtyard at Marriott. Restore provided fabulous samplings of their amazing wellness services.
MAY 8, 2023
Twenty friends of the Arts Center joined our President/CEO Jeffrey Reeves and Director of Production Curt Tomczyk to learn more about Sondheim's Company. Our OnStage event is a fun way to get up-close to see the show from an insider's perspective.
JUNE 12, 2023
Invited donors enjoyed a reception and a behind the scenes look at the building and design of Jersey Boys. The group had many great questions while touring the Arts Center building. Their enthusiasm was wonderful!
JUNE 30, 2023
The SERG Group hosted an amazing cast party on Opening Night of Jersey Boys at their Black Marlin Bayside Grill restaurant. We enjoyed delicious food and fabulous beverages in their newly renovated bar!
SUMMER 2023
Some of our "frequent fliers" who attended Jersey Boys multiple times were our summer MVPs (most valuable patrons) and there were many of you! Jess & Kathy Bryant said, "We have enjoyed it all six times that we have seen the show! However, we're going to see it four more times. It is wonderful!"
Mary Hall also told us: "This was one of the best shows I've seen, I can't imagine the Broadway cast would be any better. These are all very talented actors. The band was beyond excellent, also!"
JUNE - AUGUST 2023
Campers had an amazing summer at the Arts Center and enjoyed participating in a range of arts-infused fun! From June to August, we held theatre sessions, several visual arts camps, a week of STEAM activities, and an adaptive arts camp for special needs youth. It was a fun-filled summer at the Arts Center once again as you can see by these photos brimming with creativity and sheer happiness!
SEPTEMBER 5, 2023
The cast of Clue arrived on Labor Day, having flown in from California, Wyoming, and New York, and our staff welcomed them with an informal meet and greet in our black box rehearsal space. Seen here are the actors, CEO/President Jeffrey Reeves, Director Whitaker Gannon, and a number of the show's creative team.
