Spring/Summer 2023

Spring/Summer 2023
Only 5% of hospitals in the U.S. have earned the Top Hospital award for patient safety and quality — and Beaufort Memorial is one of them.
We all want access to top healthcare, because we know that “top” means a commitment to pursuing and achieving the best, which is especially important when you’re looking for medical services and care. And the good news: it’s right in our backyard.
We’re proud to be among the select group of hospitals recognized by the national hospital safety watchdog organization The Leapfrog Group for putting patients and their safety first every day. Not only does it mean our team is focused on you, it means you can feel confident in trusting us when it matters most.

We are overjoyed to have you at the Arts Center, whether you are visiting our island from hundreds of miles away, live in a nearby community, or you’re a part-time or year-round resident. When you’re here, we invite you to relax, leave your cares outside the doors, and simply enjoy the transformative magic of theatre.
This balmy, beautiful time of year not only brings warmer weather but also the final two shows of our 22-23 Theatre Season. We are elated to produce Company by Stephen Sondheim, the Tony Award-winning musical. For many, it is their most beloved piece from his copious roster of creations. We are closing the season with the muchanticipated southeastern premiere of Jersey Boys, (June 28 – August 20).
What we do at the Arts Center isn’t bringing in touring productions, rather we are producing them. This means we cast professional actors, imagine and build the sets, design costumes and lighting, hire the director, choreographer, and musical director, house the actors and creative team, rehearse, and then finally offer you the Broadway-caliber theatre that you enjoy on our stage!
Needless to say, much goes into each show before the curtain can rise! With that in mind, know that you are experiencing something completely unique in this moment in time.
Currently, at the printing of this issue, our senior management team is carefully planning our 23-24 season of theatrical productions. You will soon hear of our incredibly exciting show announcements – not to mention world-class presenting artists headed your way!
Speaking of presenting, we have two summer sensations that you should rush to add to your calendar – the brilliant comedian and impressionist Melissa Villaseñor (July 17, 4:00pm & 7:30pm) of Saturday Night Live and America’s Got Talent fame. And, over Labor Day weekend, we are bringing you The Police Experience (Sept. 2-3), the world’s greatest Police tribute band.
The younger set (ages 6 through teens) can enjoy the myriad of Summer Camps we have in store. See page 34 for the lineup that includes performing arts, visual arts, and STEAM camps. To learn more, visit our website at artshhi.com/camps. Camps fill up quickly so get your budding artist or actor registered!
Again, we are delighted that you’ve chosen to experience one of our region’s greatest cultural treasures … the award-winning Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Once you return home, please stay in touch by visiting our website at artshhi.com to remain current with all the latest happenings!
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU BACK AGAIN SOON.
Jeffrey S. Reeves President/CEOFrom musical theatre’s most renowned composer — the late, great Stephen Sondheim — Company is regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modernmusical genre, and the Arts Center is delighted to produce it as our spring show directed by Russell Garrett.
The original production opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on April 26, 1970. The production, featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by George Furth, ran for 705 performances before closing on New Year’s Day, 1972. The production, directed by Harold Prince, went on to be nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning six, including Best Musical.
The recent Broadway revival, starring Patti LaPone, captured five Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical.
The story follows Robert who is a confirmed die-hard bachelor. On the night of his 35th birthday, Robert contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks, and even a wedding, his friends – “those good and crazy people [his] married friends”
– explain the pros and cons of having a spouse. Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions. We learn in scenes both hilarious and searing that wedded bliss can mean misery, compromise, and bourbon.
Company features a brilliantly brisk and energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim’s best-known songs and most beautiful ballads. The show is at once boldly sophisticated, deeply insightful, and downright hilarious. Company features Sondheim’s awardwinning hit songs “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Side by Side by Side,” and the iconic “Being Alive.”
Every audience member will see reflections of themselves in at least one of the characters onstage. It’s a true testament to Sondheim’s legacy and talent that his musical written in 1970 is as fresh, poignant, and entertaining as ever.
Tickets can be purchased online at artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS (2787). The show runs through May 28.
The Arts Center is thrilled to bring you an unforgettable trip down memory lane with Jersey Boys, our sensational summer musical running June 28 – August 20.
Jersey Boys is the electrifying true story of four young men from New Jersey who went on to become one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll sensations of all time – Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Follow their gripping journey, from humble beginnings as a group of blue-collar boys with big dreams, to their meteoric rise to stardom.
Get ready for riveting storytelling, dynamic performances, and a captivating glimpse into the success, and friendship of these legendary musicians. Their journey is not without its sacrifices though. The musical explores the price of fame and the impact it has on their lives. Through their trials and triumphs, Jersey Boys is a captivating tale of friendship, loyalty, and the indelible mark left by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons on the music industry.
Packed with hit songs like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” this Tony Award-winning musical will transport you back to the 1960s with its catchy tunes, tight harmonies, and mesmerizing performances.
Directed and choreographed by Todd Underwood (Legally Blonde) and featuring a talented cast of performers who bring the iconic characters to life with passion and authenticity, Jersey Boys is a must-see production that will leave you begging for an encore!
Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons or just looking for a night of toe-tapping, non-stop entertainment, Jersey Boys is the perfect choice.
Tickets are on sale May 30 and can be purchased online at artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS(2787). Secure your seats early and get ready for a showstopping extravaganza that will leave you humming the tunes long after the curtain closes!
The Police Experience is by far the most authentic Police tribute band in the world. This highly acclaimed tribute to the Police has even won the praise of Stewart Copeland, the original group’s drummer, who said, “Every nuance, all the drum parts are perfect … and the singer has Sting down to a tee!“
In 2003, Ian Copeland, founder of Frontier Booking International (FBI), heard The Police Experience, and immediately had them perform for an audience that included Stewart Copeland and Miles Copeland, founder of IRS records and manager of The Police. Upon hearing the band, Stewart himself jumped up on stage and sat in with The Police Experience, tearing the house down with “Driven to Tears” and “Roxanne.” For the band, it was an honor and a solid affirmation of their efforts, having played with one of the world’s most talented rock drummers ever and the founding member of The Police.
Since then, for nearly 20 years, The Police Experience has traveled with the world, reminding everyone what made the music of The Police so very special and part of the soundtrack of the lives of generations of fans.
In 2009, the band got the attention of Taylor Hawkins of The Foo Fighters, who invited David Rasner, (“Sting”), and Jimbo Head, (“Andy”), to his house to jam. Hawkins was so taken with the authenticity and talent of the band, that he played an entire show with them 2 days later. Hawkins, who still performs with The Police Experience, said, “All of sudden I was transported back to 1983. They knew every single Police song perfectly. It might have been the one of the most musically satisfying experiences, … and this guy sounds exactly like Sting!”
The band continues to thrill audiences from Montreal to Trinidad, from San Diego to Nova Scotia. They remain unmatched by any other Police tribute band for their authenticity. The Police Experience is as close as it gets to the real thing. The group plays “Roxanne,” “Walking On The Moon,” “Every Breath You Take,” “Don’t Stand So Close to Me;” everyone’s favorites.
This Labor Day Weekend, September 2 & 3, prepare to be transported back to the 80’s to experience what it was like to see one of the world’s best bands play hit after hit. This show will sell out, so don’t wait!
Tickets are $63 and are on sale now. Purchase by visiting artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-2787(ARTS).

Villaseñor began developing her charmingly eccentric brand of comedy in the LA scene, performing at clubs throughout the city including the famed Laugh Factory. But don’t just take our word for it; Entertainment Weekly also praised Villaseñor’s work, calling her a “comedy genius.”

John William Jakes was born in Chicago on March 31, 1932, the only child of John Adrian and Bertha Jakes. His father was a Railway Express executive, and his mother was a teacher. As a boy, John loved pulp magazines and science fiction, but he also attended theatrical productions, took parts in school plays, and wanted to be an actor.
He studied drama for a year at Northwestern University and then transferred to DePauw University, in Indiana, where he enrolled in a creativewriting program and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1953. It was there that he met his wife, Rachel.
Even though he had an infinitely successful career as a writer, John always
had a soft spot for theatre. In 1988, his stage adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol was first performed at the Hilton Head Playhouse. Then in 1998, the production was mounted at the Arts Center, considered by him to be his “home theater.” Jakes was even involved in the beginnings of the Arts Center we know today.
His version of A Christmas Carol has since become popular for production by many universities and regional theaters, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
The Arts Center also produced Great Expectations, a classic for which John had written a stage adaption as well.
The beloved and celebrated author, known for his historical "North and South" trilogy that sold 10 million copies (not to mention 80 other books), was truly a cherished part of the Arts Center family. He will be missed.
“Considered one of the greatest storytellers of his generation.”
– Herald-Tribune

1948
– 2022
We recently bid farewell to a dear Arts Center family member, Rich Speer, who passed away in December of 2022. He was such a vital part of our organization’s evolution over the years, integral in decisions that were made, and programs that were fostered through his generosity of spirit.
When the Arts Center celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2016, instead of naming a Volunteer of the Year, we instead chose a Volunteer of the Decade, and that was Rich.
Rich Speer ceaselessly championed the Arts Center with his time, his talents, and his resources.
He led our organization as the Arts Center’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees for three terms, and went far beyond what his position required, volunteering countless hours in special projects, in addition to underwriting field trips at the Arts Center for area students through the Speer Foundation, with his wife, Tami.
Rich’s long list of accomplishments in the business world were undeniably impressive, with a financial-based career that included having been Chairman of Speer & Associates (an Atlanta based financial services consulting firm), Senior Vice President at American Express, and having held executive positions with three U.S. banks.
A proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Rich served on Tech’s College of Management Advisory Board in addition to several other boards across the country. Even beyond his countless contributions to the Arts Center, Rich’s community involvement was equally prolific. After moving to Sea Pines in 1998, he was an active member of the Junior Jazz Foundation and served on numerous boards including the Community Services Associates and Association of Sea Pines Private Property Owners.
With heartfelt gratitude, we are thrilled to share that our Spring Benefit –Country & Cocktails – was not only a blast but a resounding success! The collective generosity has been overwhelming and has helped to further our mission of enriching and benefiting the community through the arts. Thanks to those who attended, and special thanks to those listed here for their incredible support.

NOVEMBER 2022
And you thought the Arts Center was only a place for a great show? For Dr. Mark Spurling, it was the “perfect” place to propose. During Rock of Ages, he filled out a brick form as “Dr Mark & Karina Spurling,” handed it to his girlfriend, she responded “that’s not my name.” They both laughed and let it go. But he did not. Mark had us make the brick, and when he shared it with her on November 20th, she read its inscription as he proposed. Congrats to the happy couple!

Our annual Taste of Gullah festival this year proved that the show must go on! Though the weather was inclement, we moved the event inside to the lobby and the theater, and no one’s spirits were dampened in the least! A wonderful day of celebrating the rich, vibrant Gullah-Geechee culture!
FEBRUARY 28, 2023
We welcomed over 50 new Arts Center friends to our Neighborhood Meet & Greet, hosted by long-time business partner, Sea Pines Resort. Several board members and staff shared Arts Center highlights while guests enjoyed tasty appetizers and cocktails at the newly renovated Quarterdeck. The evening was topped-off with a beautiful sunset view from Regatta Room!
MARCH 18, 2023
The Arts Center was thrilled to host our spring fundraiser, Country & Cocktails, on a gorgeous spring evening! It was not only a fun and fabulous event, but successful as well, thanks to attendees, donors, fund-a-need and auction bidders, and a team of staff, volunteers, and ambassadors. Our wonderful woman at the helm, Sandy Berthelsen, was our Auction Chair who ensured the event went seamlessly!
MARCH 18, 2023
Theresa Moran was the lucky winner of the Country & Cocktails Nashville Raffle! She was ecstatic to win from 437 entries. Congratulations!
APRIL 7, 2023
35th Parallel Productions and the Arts Center teamed up last November to bring a concertized version of the musical “Madame Clicquot” to the stage, showcasing this exciting new work with a plethora of Broadway talent. On Friday, April 7, patrons gathered in the Heritage Room to celebrate –toasting with Madame’s own bubbles – and listen to the new release of the EP cast album! Everyone loved hearing this soaring music once again and are looking forward to the next step in this production’s evolution!
APRIL 11, 2023
Twitty & Lynn — Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty’s grandchildren — aka Tayla and Tre, wowed audiences at their amazing, sold-out show at the Arts Center!
