Oxana Akopov, Yin Yang - Yin Yang is about differences, it’s about similarities, it’s about human nature. We are all different on the outside, yet we’re made all of the same stuff from Mother Nature. The colors represent our difference and the nest is what brings us together.

M ILNE

Milne Publishing is proud to present Artist Talk Magazine issue 25. This issue is dedicated to celebrating all aspects of art.

Everyone featured within this issue have given interesting, in-depth, honest accounts about themselves, their work, views and ideas. In addition to the amazing images of the work they have produced, which I know you the reader will enjoy and be inspired by.

Thank you to everyone who entered our open call. The cover of this issue is by Senem Peace - Gaia.

“I often find my inspiration in mythology while I’m painting and “Gaia” is one of them.

If you are familiar with Greek mythology, Gaia is the goddess of Earth, mother of life. Of course we see the similar figure with a different name in other belief systems, or as we sometimes name them as; mythologies.

To me “Gaia” symbolises a balance of destruction and rebirth. A harmony within the chaos.

I worked on different layers and created different structures almost with a feeling of a collage.

In this collage of textures and techniques, you can see enclosed attributes, which may be sacred and may be related to the natural forces on Earth.

Such as, the peacock feather, which also reminds an eye watching the viewer, is an attribute of the patroness of women and childbirth, Hera. God of water Poseidon, God of underworld Hades, protector of voyagers Hermes take their places as well. Humankind is surrounded with all these powers, being looked after as well as led astray. Being tempted and guided with an urge to discover and explore the layers of life, the layers of reality.

I mainly used acrylics, as well as spray paint on this painting. Used mixed techniques to build different structures, each symbolises the actors taking place in this narrative. Green and blue are the main colors, which are interrupted by fierce reds and yellows. Dynamic, bold and metaphoric.

Completion date is 2022. Size 100x100cm. Mixed media on stretched canvas. ”

SENEM PEACE

Artwork by this artist ranges between £500 - £1,500. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

“My approach is emotional, instinctive and spiritual” says Istanbul born, UK based self taught artist Senem Peace, about her abstract expressionist works. “I’m not seeking to define reality. I’m accepting it as it is.”

In her works, she aims a flowing dynamism and creates different layers of contrasts with colours and textures. Overlapping bold

colours, heavy textures that are executed with dynamism and movement are the main elements of her artistic signature, which are often influenced by mythical and ancient features. “Mythology is not just some enchanted tales from an unknown time. It consists of metaphors that tell us about our collective inner worlds. In my paintings, I carried away by a balance of destruction and rebirth, creating a contemporary mysticism of hope, power and joy. From Greek and Northern myths to Lascaux cave paintings, there is a lot to inspire and learn from.”

Senem’s career spans over 20 years starting out as a photographer, although she has a bachelor degree in Prehistoric Archaeology and a master degree in War History. She is now independently continuing her works as a professional photographer and artist. “At a very young age I worked on archaeological sites, specialising in the Neolithic Age. That

experience shaped my perception of life drastically, before moving to photography and journalism.” Senem worked on editorial desks of various magazines in her hometown Istanbul, till she settled in the UK in 2016. “Photography, archaeology, history and journalism were all combined together in my life. My multidisciplinary and multicultural background has a great effect on my art as well.”

Senem works mainly with acrylics, oil, spray paint as well as mixed media. In her recent works, she moved on to more sculptural feel in the textures, increasing depth and dimension. “The hardest part of making abstract art is the endless possibilities it offers. It can easily make you get lost and drag you into dead ends. On the other hand, it has so much to give. Chaos finding its way to order by experimenting and exploring in between media and techniques. And I’m in love with this continuous process.”

MONET SHOT

Artwork by this artist ranges between £30 - £2,000. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

Taking the opportunity to pursue a degree in fine art later on in life, Mark Halsey was introduced to Post Modern artists such as Sigmar Polke, David Salle, and Derek

Boshier.

This had an immediate impact on his oeuvre. After graduating from university

he quickly found a workshop at Burns Street Studios in Northampton, focusing on painting and small run, limited edition screenprints. Now working under the moniker ‘Monet Shot’, his work can be found in galleries across the UK.

Working on a large scale, my paintings are constructed with traditional processes using oil and acrylic paint, but also incorporate stencils, screen-print and airbrush work to build up a ‘collage’ aesthetic in which multiple image sources cross-pollinate.

Some of the images I use are personal, some universal, and though the final composition can be ambiguous there is a sense of an underlying narrative – often with a social commentary. Consumerism and the visual language of advertising – both current and historic – are prominent in my works, which therefore often have a playful, absurd quality on first viewing, but which subsequently reveal a more ambiguous and sometimes provocative perspective on the world around us.

Within my latest work, the narratives I create operate by key images in a ‘resting place’ that is alien to them, confusing the source image. This approach is a generative act, rejecting old certainties and opening up new meanings and ways of understanding postmodern culture.

Efthymios P. Pournaras, A blossomed almond tree - The vigor of youth of our children, that sparkles gracefully even in the worst moments of our lives, was and remains the hope of humanity. Protect the hope, dream like a child... The painting represents the month February, but also stands as an allegory of Spring. In the foreground of the composition, the famous Cycladic figurine of the harpist is looking towards a young girl adorned with almond blossoms through a transparent glass-like surface. His feelings of pure admiration for nature’s mechanisms of rebirth, which are following an annual circle, are expressed via his tears (represented by the dark bloody red dices) that are gradually collected in the basin nearby.

ALICE GUR-ARIE, Noon at Beach Point - You reach the Porquerolles, a tiny island off the coast of France, by boat. The southern side, with steep hills and secluded creeks, is accessible only to hikers. The northern side, with fine sand beaches and turquoise waters, offers explorers stunning views of nature. This image, combining photography and painting, interprets an extraordinary landscape of arching trees under a burning midday sun. Treating my photograph as the canvas, I painted the picture by hand digitally in layers to achieve washes, enlarging it to paint detail pixel by pixel. Jenha Paulino, Color Disco - “Color Disco” is a piece I’ve made that reflects my personality as an individual and artist. I simply love colors and how they interact with one another and I wanted to show that in this piece. December 2022, I rededicated my life to art and since then, I’ve been exploring color and abstraction with oil pastels. I’m currently in my experimental phase as an artist and I’ve seen tremendous growth in my mindset and art philosophy. Perfectionism used to be a big hindrance for me, but ever since I made the decision to pursue art again, I started to let go and let my creative intuition flow. “Color disco” is a testament to that.

Anita Le Sech, Oblivion - ‘Oblivion’. It’s one of my largest pieces at 300cm x 120cm containing Cement and Acrylic. I wanted the size to cause an impact on viewing this piece and I wanted to push the boundaries of what art can be on a wall on canvas. Its heavily textured body brings complexity but at the same time provides a sense of calmness which I have found people loving. This painting will promote conversation in as far as what people see in this art piece. Although large, the painting does give you the impression of space. A wonderful painting for either an office or home.

Weronika Dyląg, Flagella of kindness - The world we live in seems cruel and unpredictable at times. Many times we feel powerless and drained. By creating this conviction that we may not have the power over what is happening outside - we have a power to control our inner world. By being kinder to ourselves and by spreading this kindness and passing it over to others we can regain the control over the world we perceive as negative. Flagella of kindness is a painting about spreading this kindness. It is acrylic made with a use of strong blows of air.

Marianne De Roo, Pola fourteen - I am an oil painter. In my work I focus on the botanical world, the human figure, portraits.

Part of my working process is to take polaroids of what I observe around me. This work is based on one of them. It expresses my innate attraction to settings, composition and colour. When I paint I seek my own version of a reality. I like to convey the message that discrepancy, emptiness, subtlety can bring balance. I think that the magnificence of our world is vast and suggestive, it is obvious and hidden at the same time.

David Kirkman, San Francisco - This new collection combines abstract and street art. ‘San Francisco’ encapsulates mindfulness, expression and thought. Bold brushstrokes and palette knife work is then outlined with acrylic pen, creating bold and colourful art. The most important part of creating for me is to be in moment and paint organically. My process reflects my mental health, a need to be free but also a need to help other people with their wellness through creating art that they can lose themselves in and that brings about joy. Painting in this style sees the work transform, from being completely abstract to being more defined with each pen stroke. It’s like a thought being formed.

Bianca Olimpia Abacioaei, You float like a night dream above my soul - The artwork, called, You float like a night dream above my soul, is one of my illustrations inspired by the modern poetry of the Romanian writer, Nichita Stănescu. The drawing is a metaphor of love, which urges you towards dreaming, meditation and peace. Through my artwork, I intend to offer the viewer a moment of introspection, a detachment from the concrete reality, to enter the timeless and boundless world of the illustration, discovering its own intrinsic message, rendered through reinterpreted shapes and symbols.

Irene O Neill, Beauty of Lithium - Executed in Acrylics on Canvas, this painting responds to Lithium Mining. We are all told to go out and buy electric cars to save the planet, but has anyone realised where lithium in batteries actually comes from and how it is mined. My work is about climate change and this painting was a response to photographs of the destruction of land where lithium is extracted. Lithium is a most vivid colour. The work is abstracted and painted loosely in a style in which I like to work. It is 85cm wide by 100cm tall and is part of a new series of work I am working on in my studio in Ireland.

Saman Ahmed, Nostalgia for nature - Since my childhood, I have always been drawn to the beauty of nature. I would often venture into the woods, seeking a more deliberate way of living. The wild, untamed world around me served as a conduit, connecting my body to my soul. There is something truly magical about observing the world around me - watching the graceful sway of the trees, the slow movement of the clouds, and the shimmering reflections on the water’s surface. I find myself entranced by the delicate movements of insects on plants, and the majesty of ducks and swans swimming in the lake at sunrise. It is remarkable how a visit to such a place can trigger memories and feelings that were long folded away in the recesses of my mind.

Alicia Thompson, Promising Glow - During the pandemic I spent many months in my basement painting and reconnecting with a practice that is essential to my well-being. I also spent as much time as possible in nature. This painting is of a portion of a favourite walking path near my home. I created others previously that have a more ominous feel that were based on this same place. Many reflected my inward anxieties, but others showed the effects of the wildfires that impeded that precious ritual I tried to keep intact. I created this during September. I remember the strong, clear light, the freshness of it all, as I was reentering the work force again, my kids were reentering school, and I was moving into my new, light-filled studio space.

Annette Aspen, Seize The Day - ‘Seize The Day’ is a significant painting for Annette because it defines her as a person and an artist, as she had a seizure while painting. Annette recently had an exhibition in her hometown of Tunbridge Wells called ‘Fits & Starts,’ because that’s exactly how she works! Although she has never wanted to be labelled as having epilepsy, she has learned to ‘own’ it through her painting. Annette’s childhood love of art was reignited through art therapy during a lengthy hospital stay due to epilepsy, when art therapy proved so beneficial. Annette believes that inspiring others and raising awareness for the work of her chosen charity, The National Brain Appeal, is critical.

When painting this I tried to convey a sense of familiarity between the viewer and the painting. This piece is meant to make you feel as if you are being looked at or watched. I try to convey a sense of humanity with the glance of an eye. The subjects relaxed facial features and confrontational stare is meant to evoke a subjective emotional response from the viewer. Paola Grandi - 22pG, Elena | Be.Unique - When I look at women, I see unique faces with geometrical lines and colors. What I notice is not age, religion, or color of their skin, but only their attitude. Elena faces life with confidence, and her eyes express strength and inspire me with her unique gaze. With color I try to express the courage, passion, action and hope I can see when I look at the women I draw.

In portraits, I often use symbols that represent my current mood and emotion. For example, Elena has a swallow in their hair that represents freedom; the possibility to express yourself through art.

Girisha Jain, Frida - “Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.”~ FRIDA KHALO

Inspired by the Mexican beauty, standard-bearer for women’s inner strength, for a love of Mexico and its culture, and for courage in the face of adversity. Above all, a genuine woman who was true to her convictions. This digital art is a self portrait of “FRIDA KHALO” depicting her beauty inside out. The colors used in this artwork are bright which suits her personality and Mexico culture. In addition, this painting also depicts that at the end of the day, we can endure much more than we can think we can.

Lisseth Carrillo Ordaz, La Colmena - One time I asked a friend what he thought the painting was about. For him it was a metaphor about how sometimes we have small invasive thoughts that attract more and more negative thoughts that end up swarming and buzzing inside our heads. I loved his interpretation so much that it wouldn’t have felt right to go and correct him. Instead, I decided to leave it open to interpretation. I love to hear other people’s interpretations of my pieces. If I chose to give it a solid explanation it would restrict the piece. While the viewers’ perceptions expand on its substance. Beata Dencikowska, My David of XXI century - “My David of the XXI century” is a painting inspired by the sculpture of “David” by Michelangelo, but not only, because it is also a depiction of mine of a heroic male act in an abstract style. Because as we know, David is not only a symbol of strength and captivating youthful beauty, but also a representation of the hero holding his head high and proud, not losing his spirit and style despite his huge and long-lasting fight with Goliath, which he finally wins and emanates endless happiness, which we can see by using bright & colorful colors in the whole painting.

Deniz Kurdak, Unbreakable formations - “Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life would come to be different” Katherine Mansfield. Deniz questions our perception of the world. She is interested in the misalignment of the external reality and the reality we create in our minds. Her creation process with fabrics and threads by dyeing, cutting, sewing, etc. -in short, transforming them- is the modus operandi for reflecting on the happenings and constructing her own reality. Light, which has great influence over how we perceive the world, is the essence of this piece.

Nafia Syeed, New Norm - It was 2020. I could not recognize the world I knew. Everything had changed. Chaos outside and we were trapped in a virtual world. Staying positive in those difficult times, I firmly believed that “Everything’s gonna be alright.” Though for more than a year we had to hide our faces behind a mask, I believed in a future when we will be looking back remembering those days of adopting new norms and will be proud of our perseverance and patience and that we were able to fight the pandemic. William Barton III, The Forgotten Four: The Re-Integration of Pro Football - This painting is a commemoration of four men that changed the game of football into the integrated physical competition that we’re all accustom to seeing today. As the title suggests, they’re referred to as “forgotten” because despite the fact that they became pros one year earlier in 1946, they’ve been overshadowed by Jackie Robinson’s integration of pro baseball. Featured in the painting are Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley and Bill Willis. Also included in the collage are a myriad of entities that represent important parts of their lives in and outside of the game of football.

Joe Taveras, Idea Generation - How are ideas formed? What does an idea look like? I view this painting as a study of these questions and more. This painting was created in the midst of my studies surrounding nonlinear dynamics, chaos theory, and the formulation of “new” ideas. With thick sludges of oil pastel, feather-like chalk, explosive spray paint movements, and crackling glass medium, this artwork arrives at a crucial moment in my development. With my careers in psychology and robotics as my foundation, ‘Idea Generation’ serves as a prime example of my use of painting as a tool to convey concepts we may not yet have the language to describe.

Jane Tagg, Monkeying Around - Monkeying Around interprets Marburg virus- a zoonotic disease that is passed from fruit bats to African green monkeys and onto humans. The busy vibrant background, bustling with sinuous forms, draws inspiration from microscopic imagery of viruses, and establishes an infected and threatening environment. Bright, fluorescent colours are used throughout the composition to establish more connections to scientific representation of viruses whilst helping to establish a lively feel. Playful monkeys climb and swing from grids, their natural environment having been destroyed through deforestation. The symptoms of Marburg virus are emphasised through the infected organs that the monkeys are juggling

Planets rest in her outstretched tresses facing the direction of the open universe, representative of faith, hope, and dreams beyond the scorched earth she sees before her. Sasaart, Fierce DALO - Fierce Dalo, or the pride of being a woman (girl). Dalo means “daughter” in Bobo, my father’s language. Through this collage of the bogolan motif, I express the pride of being a daughter of my countries, France and Burkina Faso, a daughter of crossbreeding. The bogolan fabric that forms the face refers to tradition, to roots, the double triangular pattern to gyny. Pride in belonging to the female gender. Pride in being a woman. This painting is also an invitation to step out of the frame to dare, to be proud of ourselves and put a crown on top of our head.

Lu Wenjuan, In the Crevice of Time - My works mainly depict the moments of people’s daily life through oil paintings. The content of this painting is the moment when I was reading a book in a bookshop. I feel that the bookshop has a lot of symbolism, it is a complex collection of space and time. Books record people’s memory, culture and history, at the same time, books allow us to instantly return to a certain moment in the past. Books make me feel infinite freedom for a limited time. Even if our existence is only a moment in the crevice of time, this moment has a special meaning for each of us.

My Linh Mac, Apus - Shapes are present in every part of our existence. They have significantly more power over our lives than we realize, as they literally mold our world into three dimensions. The circle is one of these forms that may be found in practically every part of life. Because it has no beginning or finish, the circle portrays development as a process of transformation from death to birth, ending and beginning. A circle denotes eternity in this sense. A circle represents the Divine life force or spirit that keeps our world moving in many cultures and spiritual beliefs. It represents vigor, fullness, completion, and perfection.

Nermen Khalil, Rising Phoenix - The Egyptians associated the phoenix with immortality, and that symbolism had a widespread appeal in late antiquity. Kody Wrenn, maximalism and me - My selected piece of work is a printed textile sample in which I was looking into the trend of maximalism and the notion of ‘more is more’. Within this project I also explored Art Deco as a subgenre with its gold accents and symmetrical geometrics and to make it more personal to me, incorporated motifs and imagery from the musician Lana Del Rey, a big influence of mine. After in depth research surrounding maximalism, I realised its main philosophy is to provide an outlet for self expression and sharing your interests, which I found I could with hand crafted, detailed pattern design.

Alexander Banerjee, Unlocked - “Unlocked” is a ballpoint pen drawing from an illustrated short story I made: The Banality of Monsters. Leigh Witherell, I’ll Be Gone.. - The inspiration for this piece comes from articles I have read about men who are struggling to balance masculinity and still being in touch with the feminine as well. Many men who contribute to these articles talk about leaving their relationships due to the unrealistic expectations placed on them by their partners in regard to this struggle. They say things like she wants to be manly but still be able to cry during a movie and they feel unable to achieve this balance. They talk about feeling isolated and alone.

Weronika Dyląg, Self-awareness - The work was inspired by works of Ismael Lagares exhibited by Lanford Gallery. It is a part of the “exploring red” cycle - same as “Inner self”. The painting was done in many sessions to make sure that the layer underneath was dry just before adding another one. Self-awareness is our acknowledgment of existence. It is what helps us to observe our behaviour and emotions and experience the world and adapt to it. Our understanding of what self-awareness is - is little. But we do know when it exists.

Tristen Kovacs, House Party - This painting was a turning point in my artistic process; both in theme and practice. Exploring themes of interaction through figures and environments, I have turned towards painting from miniatures I create, along with photographed figures composited together to create a distorted image, heightened by a highly saturated color palette and dramatic lighting. I create my work in response to the shift in society that followed the pandemic, turning social life upside down. This shift, and coming of age in the middle of it, was an experience I feel has severely stunted my generations capacity to socialize in the same way we’d previously experienced, resulting in cinematic, narratively ambiguous paintings.

Dean Dzuk, “NO MORE!” - In this work, the artist expresses a conscious willingness to push back the depressive negativity of the past—and the past few years—by creating an iconic emblem. Resembling a flag, it is a call to action against the divisions, oppressions, and ills that have infected our inner worlds and our common shared globe. Each organic layer tells a part of the story: a free-flowing background of blues and blacks of the inner mind, then a specter of doubt through uneasy paint strokes, scratches, and mistakes, to finally be rejected outright by a series of bold brushstrokes resembling an “Enough Is Enough” declaration.

Ukraine was my home for a few years, and I want to honor the babusyas (grandmothers) who, with no rest, are building and rebuilding what is destroyed in times of war. The background composition is inspired by the colorful head scarves they wear in happy moments, and is chaotic, as current times are. And the geometric shape over it reflects how human beings are -in our own way- living in our own world, and seeing the rest from a very closed perspective.

Laura Meize, let it go - Layer by layer, it’s a process with a color, with a technique and a process for me. At the start there is acrylic and a few strokes of an oil pastel crayon. Next layers are oil color. Those dark blue square shaped dots are made of an oil color. When you keep things for a long time they change but not always. You need to throw them away. I had opened the tube from the other side, the color wasn’t smooth as it was, it wasn’t hard, it was flexible, I chopped it with a palette knife and mixed with a linseed oil, turpentine and other oil color. It’s bold, it’s colourful and changing, with a textured color and white space, free space where to grow. I believe, every one of us, there is something to let go. Discover

Jedi`Nye, The Eye of Egypt - Ghenaya Lewis formerly known as “Jedi`Nye”, is an emerging multi talented painter. She’s set out to leave her mark on the world — like the greats that came before her. Believing Egyptians are artistic trailblazers, recreating “The Eye of Horus”. Symbolizing: self, truth, healing, protection, prosperity, and reality. She’s written DREAM in hieroglyphs, at the peak of the eye to emphasize “If you can see it, you can achieve it”. The paintings red base represents the root chakra. Lastly the river overflowing portrays growth, freedom, cleansing, and vulnerability.

Caleb Kaufman, Smoke - My name is Caleb Kaufman. I’m a photography student at Ithaca College. I took this photo in Ithaca when I was walking around in town. This woman came up to me and told me “you need to take my photo.” She said her favourite store was going out of business and she wanted a photo in front of it. I obliged and took this photo. This photo is melancholic to me because this woman was very clearly homeless. Everyone else around her walked past like she didn’t exist. After this photo, I walked her to her bank. She checked if she had enough money for lunch and then she left.

Katherine Polack, Ancestral Swim - This painting is a portrayal of the beauty and mystery of the ocean. The underwater world is depicted in great detail from the light filtering through and refracting on the ocean floor to the intricate patterns on the shells and fins. The fluid movement of the turtles as they gracefully glide through the water, was achieved with the richness of oil paint allowing smooth gradients to enhance the sense of depth and wonder. This artwork serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our ocean and the creatures that inhabit them. It invites the viewer to contemplate the wonders of the ocean along with our responsibility to protect it for generations to come.
