Charles James, Notorious - This 24”x36” acrylic on canvas painting was created as an homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg . After she passed, I thought it was appropriate to create an image of her that was rough, colorful and expressive. She was a massive positive force for women’s rights and had the nick name “Notorious RBG” as a play on the rapper “Notorious BIG”. She was a very colorful character, so I tried to create an image to represent that.

of, languishing in the abyss of an existence without purpose.

Many people have a poor relationship with themselves. They strive for external satisfaction whilst their inner dialogue is judgmental, critical, and negative. The truth is, they do not even know who they are under all the layers of programming, fear, and anxiety they have built up throughout the years. So many of us go through life disconnected from our inner self, looking for something else (or someone else) to complete us.

My paintings are always uplifting. They aim to show a different path, an alternative perspective to the negative view we tend to accept as the inevitable truth of our world. It is all a matter of interpretation. What you focus on, it expands. People actually crave lasting satisfaction and fulfillment. This can only be achieved through a profound connection with themselves, with their essence.

Milne Publishing is proud to present Artist Talk Magazine issue 21. This issue is dedicated to celebrating all aspects of art.

Everyone featured within this issue have given interesting, in-depth, honest accounts about themselves, their work, views and ideas. In addition to the amazing images of the work they have produced, which I know you the reader will enjoy and be inspired by.

Thank you to everyone who entered our open call.

The cover of this issue is by Mónica Esgueva, titled Connection.

“This artwork depicts the importance of being connected to

your inner self. It means deeply knowing your values, vision and motivation and beliefs in life, and it takes a great deal of continuous self-awareness and introspection.

For me, being connected to my inner self means being connected to the ultimate truth we are all linked with, the inner knowing.

When we are not connected to our soul, we may experience some external physical signals our body sends us —anxieties, dissatisfaction, depression, fear.

We then live our life merely on the surface, repeating destructive patterns, surviving instead of thriving, tangled up in the stories we make up and refuse to let go

It is what this artwork shows. That is the only way we can find serenity and balance. When we draw our awareness deeper inwards, we begin to feel supported, guided, and at peace.”

MÓNICA ESGUEVA - CONNECTION
3

MÓNICA ESGUEVA

Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

Having lived in London, Paris, Tanzania, and India, I am a Visionary artist now based in Madrid, Spain.

My art career started as a child, so to speak. My talent was innate, although later on I took courses at Paris École des Beaux Arts and studied with renowned painters in France. I started exhibiting my paintings when I was very young, and my artwork has been shown in exhibitions in Holland, Great Britain, USA, France, Costa Rica, Italy, Greece and Spain.

A number of institutions own my artwork as well, such as: Rochester Museum of Fine Arts (NH, USA), Monaco Museum of Modern Art, LatinAmerican Art Museum (Florida, USA), Art Connection in the Capital Region (MD, USA), Hewlett-Packard Foundation France, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Zarzuela del Monte (Spain), and Museo Casa Orduña (Spain).

My art is mostly derived from visions I have while in a meditative or contemplative state of mind. My purpose is to transcend the physical world, inspiring the viewer to reach a higher ground and perceive the light that is within us all. As William Blake wrote, “If the

doors of perception were cleansed then everything would appear to man as it is, Infinite.”

I paint to express this beyond words, even beyond the visual senses. I paint vibrations that aspire to transcend the physical world. I create to expand the light, aligned to Robert Schumann’s perspective that “the artist’s vocation is to send light into the human heart”.

It is my wish to invite the viewer to do some self-reflection and connection with their inner self. By questioning what we perceive

with our senses and how we have been taught to look at the external world, we can connect with our inner world, that then interrelate with the whole universe. By claiming our real place on the web of life, we empower ourselves. By deepening our perception, we are reminded of our unity with spirit and the sublime beauty of nature and the cosmos.

As a multi-faceted creative person, there is an art to which medium I find myself working in. I use both writing and painting to empower each person’s capacity to transform their life, to build bridges to the soul. There is an intense focus on and true presence in each project I undertake. At the same time, there is freedom and flexibility built into my role as an artist because I am not limited to just one art form. I have been drawn to writing books to show how to achieve inner peace and, somehow, I do the same thing with my paintings. I bring a piece of this transcendent world into every art piece I create. Art can guide us to connect with our inner light, illuminating the shadows and pains of our current predicaments. When people are deeply moved by art, they resonate with their own spiritual truth, with the essence of who they really are.

BLESSINGS 5

The artists’ role is to be a leader and a visionary: Not only think outside the box, but to be outside the box, contributing to the change we want to see in the world.

Since we are all interconnected, the energy field of each individual has the potential to influence the collective through creative acts. Mystical visions and experiences motivate us to question our assumptions about life and the world, challenging us to live more profoundly. The deeper an artist penetrates into their own

I do get many comments on my Instagram page that are extremely encouraging, and I am very happy about that! What I can share with you today is what an art curator recently wrote about my art, which is probably more interesting for the reader:

“Mónica Esgueva is a Spanish  painter who excels in the use of imagination to create inspirational works of art that celebrate the innate beauty, grace, and awe of life.

Beyond having superb aesthetic qualities, her art also provides an inspiring dimension of inner richness.

Viewing her meaningful works of art is both an exciting and a calming experience, as her artworks can be considered points of contact between the spiritual and the material realms.

Her paintings depict the idea of the Divine mystery and its vastness, exploring the unlimited potentiality of consciousness. It is an experience of shared oneness —so difficult to describe in words alone— and often finding outlet instead in images.

She shines a beacon of hope for us with her spiritual perspective on life and art, offering a timeless way of seeing, of witnessing what we consider normal reality”.

infinitude, the more able they are to transmit that state. Making art (and sharing it) is a way for me to integrate those visions of a better world into daily life.

It is my utmost aim that by contemplating my works, one may momentarily have a glimpse of our immortal light, remembering the silent center of the mystery that is our very soul.

I find it impossible to imagine what others can feel when they see my art for the first time. It is true that

PLANETARY ASCENSION HOPE
6

In a world of apparent chaos where so many suffer from mental disorders, emotional imbalances and inner despair, we need to go beyond what is towards what it can be. Humanity is in the middle of a huge transformation, and each individual must choose whether he is going to contribute to the existing darkness or to serve a brighter purpose.

As Goethe wrote: “A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every

day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” This series of Lightscapes aims for a sense of emotional connection —harmony, serenity, hope—and simultaneously promotes unity, while remaining personally meaningful to each viewer. Each artwork invites you to connect to your real Self and start imagining a new Earth through your heart and intuition. Each artwork encourages you to bask in a warm glow, feeling

the inner light that never fades away.

Only art can penetrate the veil of the rational constricted mind and open up a new realm of possibilities, making spirits beam with excitement and anticipation. May my paintings be of benefit to all.

PAV SZYMANSKI

Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information. Malaika Mzuri

Pav Szymanski is a painter with 30 years of experience. His current research project is based on creating visual responses to

his observations of people, who are suspended in the vacuum of hypnotic repetition. He has travelled the world and recorded individuals, who genuinely struggle with their existence in the context of their survival. He has gathered unique evidence from destinations across the globe and his most significant findings were from Haiti, Tanzania and Myanmar. These resulted in the production of his most spectacular paintings. He developed new and innovative ways of working and experimenting with image making. They combine the best of traditional achievements with the power of contemporary thinking and deep reflection. He

works full time as a Programme Co-ordinator for South Devon College in England. He is also an external examiner for the University of The Arts, London and Academic Qualifications Alliance.

Pav Szymanski has been awarded the ‘International Vision Collector’s Award’ and the ‘Power of Creativity’ Art Prize by the Contemporary Art Curator Magazine.

Lisa Galletti, curator @ madsmilano: “In Pav Szymanski’s paintings, the ceaseless progress of time seems to have stopped, frozen in a precise moment. It is not the processing of a snapshot of life, the capture of a particular substance worthy of being represented and reworked. The temporal suspension to which Szymanski’s artistic production is subjected is far from the concept of the moment to embrace a temporal parenthesis that is much broader and more complex than the ordinary capture of a vital instant on canvas”

My artist’s name is ZequalsZ2plusC, which is the formula for Fractals. Fractals are what inspired me to start creating art. I wanted to see if I could make art by hand that was nearly as symmetrical as fractals. Obviously, iteration is impossible by hand because it is infinite. However, over time I noticed by combining multiple techniques, I could create art that computers cannot.

Almost all my work begins in a paint program in a video game. It is then captured and edited in

Photoshop. Most pieces use Thirty to Forty different techniques.

While I appreciate the complexity of the Old Masters and their realism, I have always been fascinated by Modern Art and Architecture, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Ad Art, and Album Art of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Some of my favorite well known artists are Pollock, Haring, Roger Dean, Stanley Mouse, and Robert Crumb to name a few. And in no

particular order. I also like street artists such as Shepard Fairey and Invader.

I also have a piece accepted in the Fair this year. Though I will not know the result for a month or so.

My favorite piece to make was “Split Levels.” I worked on it for Twenty-Four hours straight. Only breaking for a couple of meals. Then Eight hours on each of the next Two nights to finish it. I work and sleep at various times throughout the day and night. However, my best work comes late at night when there are fewer distractions.

The future of my art is uncertain at this time. However, I have about Five Hundred pieces in my portfolio. So, I am using more of my time for marketing in the short term.

Zhenya Z is a fashion Illustrator and architect.

Her aesthetic is characterised through her neat and elegant lines, littered with eye-catching colours that capture each of her subjects’ spirit, transforming them into a dazzling illustration.

She uses traditional materials to create illustrations. These are pastel crayons and colored cardboard.

We can see in her works an emphasis on realistic face drawing and simplified clothing lines. She uses the background as part of the illustration.

When she was a child, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer like Coco Chanel. But after graduation, she began working as an architect. She painted every day. Eight years later, she began working as a fashion illustrator full-time.

«It was a difficult choice. The work of an architect is a stable path. Creative work is an unstable path. But I realized that I really love creativity and it’s part of my life»says Zhenya.

Her illustrations have been exhibited in Acid Gallery (France, Lille), Haze Gallery (Germany, Berlin), Boomer Gallery (London). In 2022, her works were presented

Marta Carceller, Carrer del Lloro - 160cm x 100cm - acrylic on canvas, 2021 - Often, when we think of the streets of a city, noise, traffic, hurry and crowded streets come to our mind, but there are still quiet corners that give us peace, such as the one in the painting; a charming alley in Blanes, a few meters from the sea. Vertical lines are predominant, the shadows of which spread in the liberating space of the background, enhanced by the visual appeal of the telephone booth. The predominant ocher and gray shades create a warm atmosphere, very similar to the low light that the buildings let through to the floor. This work is executed with a loose but detailed technique, which creates the shapes and its textures by using brushstrokes.

This painting is an interpretation of Cahersiveen. A town on the Iveragh Peninsula in South-West Ireland.

Sara Campaci, Portrait#1 - Collage is for me a metaphor for creativity. Nothing is created from nothing, we start from what already exists, transforming it into new shapes and colours. Collage, as an artistic technique, takes existing images, breaks them down, mixes them up and puts them back together again, giving a new concept to something that previously meant something else. In the new order given to the chaos of images that surround us, unexpected messages sometimes emerge, as in a dream.

Gary Lennie, The Stare - This piece was completed just four weeks ago. It is an oil painting and the dimensions are 14” x 18”. When painting portraits my aim is always to create an image that looks alive yet remains unmistakably a painting as opposed to photorealism. My method is as follows. I chose a smooth canvas board and stained it with a raw umber wash. I then drew the silhouette of the head and indicated the main features and shadow shapes also with raw umber paint. The painting was then completed in two further sessions. I used the Zorn palette (titanium white, cadmium red, yellow ochre and ivory black) Discover More - Instagram: @garylennieart Artwork by this artist ranges between £300 - £650. Pue Majumder, Ship of desert - Desert safari is one of the most sought after tourist activities in Dubai. Everyone visiting the country wants to experience that. And one of the most exciting parts of that experience is the camel ride. The camel handlers try their best to make the camels look as beautiful as possible. A common accessory in the ensemble is the drape which they put on a camel. The designs, forms and colors involved are extraordinary. They all have thread works which display the expertise of the traditional craftsmen. So I wanted to capture that essence with bold strokes, bright colors, graphical forms by using needles and threads to make it look extra realistic. It is my humble attempt to do justice to the beauty of the ship of the desert.

Vincent is a sphynx cat - the naked cat breed par excellence - holding a small Alcedo Atthis bird in his right hand that represents kindness and hope. Vincent represents melancholy, the sadness that has taken on lightness. He has two opposite emotions, each one on hand, the right means hope and the explicit reference to the innocence of childhood the left hand which is injured in the wrist, is hugging her waist, denotes a posture of either pain or containment, helping to remain upright, standing. Tiziano Summo - Hello Death Studio, Portray of Time - ‘Portrayal of Time’ reproduces the different colours of the sun during the day, measuring it from 2100 (sunrise and sunset) to 6500 Kelvin degrees (midday). The different shades of white follow the circular shape of the sun, eternally dancing in a circular chromatic motion. Time is an abstract concept that humans do not fully understand, and since the beginning it’s been illustrated with the passage of the sun. Therefore, ‘Portrayal of Time’ aims to facilitate this complex concept in a paradigmatic artwork that shows the time passing, yet not moving.

Tiziano Summo - Hello Death Studio, Black Unicorn - Black Unicorn is part of a series of works, “Light After Death” (2019-2021), which illuminates the relationships between art and science, imperfection and geometry, life and death. Black Unicorn disrupts the conventional way of thinking by twisting the classic iconography of unicorns in a contemporary way. In a world where myths are not widespread anymore, this monochromatic artwork still manages to impose its ancient presence with its geometrical neon horn. The light facing forward becomes a beacon of hope and a direction in this modern sceptical society. Black Unicorn’s light wants to make us feel aware by reflecting on the deceiving binary meaning of life and death.

As well as many references to the ancient ethnic group, and how colors, and shapes were interpreted in ancient times. Tatjana Komso, Natur (75x115cm), acrylic paint and oil pastels on stretched canvas - This piece is actually a repainted one. It is really nice how the underlying layers work with the new one. I started with oil pastels and filled the forms with this awesome color palette. All my art is the reflection of my own self reflection, my way of processing the world and people around me. It is abstract, intuitive, constantly changing. It’s therapeutic, hygienic for my psych. Since I’ve been working as a clinical psychologist, I needed painting so much. It is a tribute to all the women before us, and that will come after, passing down the “great power of intuition, composed of lightning-fast inner seeing, inner hearing, inner sensing, and inner knowing”[2]. Agnes Sheikh, Life will be better soon - This painting is about how to let go, how to recognize and embrace a little moment of “joy” in order to move on…They say “Life goes on…” Je ne sais pas…How do you go on with life? May be being attentive to little things front of your eyes, on the ground, and then slowly lifting your eyes and discover a beautiful sky, just for you...

Jojo Nicholas // Ke Paperart, Fungi No. 3 – Photographed under light - Beautiful relationships between function and form have been curated over eternity by nature, and we have so much to learn from it. Selected from Ke’s recent Fungi Collection, Fungi No. 3 is one of many studies into the functions and ecosystems of fungi and its fruit. The twists and folds in the mesmerising layers and patterns of fungi hold uncovered secrets, you just have to look and learn. The fragile papercut entices you to seek out the untold knowledge, spilling out fragments of illumination.

Christy Boaman, Proximity - Proximity seeks to convey that feeling, that knowing, that no matter how much you’re around someone, the depth and meaningfulness of the relationship is always going to be limited. Proximity does not equal closeness. To share a space with someone, to be right next to them for years, and to feel like you’re living on different planets. In this case, venus and mars.

Christy Boaman, Debt - I believe what we bring into this life is exactly what we are meant to have. Both trauma and privledge have their place in self-discovery. Whether generational, social, personal, we all have lessons that we are meant to learn in the process. This work, this effort to grow, is our debt. This Karmic debt must be paid.

Liz Darrell, Venus Divine - So much of recorded history ignores the leaders and icons of marginalized peoples. So many trailblazers deserved the grandiose portraits of yore, but never got them. The goal of the series this piece is a part of, “Recorded Herstory,” is to take some of the most well known paintings of epic moments in time and replace the subject with a queer icon. These paintings were done by geniuses with a specific message prioritized over accuracy— be it strength, nobility, beauty, or even the divine. Our icons deserve the same treatment. The series is an opportunity to percolate on the fact that despite not being portrayed as some of the world’s most influential members, we are just as deserving.

Sally Broadbent, Floating (2022) - Sally works with the alternative photographic process of cyanotype. Using a custom-built UV light unit, 3-dimensional objects can be exposed as photograms. Using herself and her children as models, she exploits the ethereal character produced by the process of cyanotype. Research into the differing quality of line produced by using and combining 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects informs her practice and represents the spiritual side of our nature alongside what we know to be real. Sally’s interest in duality is echoed by the unnatural blue of cyanotype and the metaphorical allusions of the colour, simultaneously joyful and ominous.

Kateryna Brovkova, Ukrainian Ethnic Series: The Life Circle - Ukrainian Ethnic Series is like coding my genome into the art. In my artworks, there are many references to ancient ornaments, and culture, for example, motifs of the painted ceramics of the ancient Trypillia culture. As well as many references to the ancient ethnic group, and how colors, and shapes were interpreted in ancient times. For example, the oval shape means egg as a symbol of the beginning of beginnings, and cyclicality, a symbol of new life, and rebirth. All of the ornaments are conveying the concept of denoting love, faith, hope, and braveness. In ancient Ukrainian folklore, a very important place was given to celestials, flowers, herbs, and ancient Goddesses.

Tiziano Summo - Hello Death Studio, Rectangle - The Rectangle model is part of a series of works, “Light After Death” (2019-2022), which illuminates the relationships between art and science, imperfection and geometry, life and death. A male cow skull is augmented with rectangular neon horns, which recall the traditional hunting trophy. The perfect geometry of the artificial hand-made neon clashes fiercely with the organic, natural shape of the skull, creating a surreal harmony. The juxtaposition between these 2 elements embodies and balances the fragility of life and the eternal perfection of mathematics. Beautiful but unnerving, the electrifying neon light serves as a beacon for curious souls and an unmistakable reminder of our mortality.

Leigh Witherell, Ocean Life in Abstract - Ocean Life in Abstract: Florida is populated with fantastic ocean life and reefs, but it is also populated with many talented artists who paint these scenes in stunning realism. I decided to see what I could do with an abstract rendering of these same scenes on a 10x24 inch canvas. I am a fluid abstract artist and I decided to use varying shades of blues, oranges, yellows and silver. There are no brush strokes in this piece as the composition was manipulated using an air blower. Davide Saco, Moving - “Moving” is a piece of the “Feelings” series, ongoing since 2020. The search for simplicity is the basis of this work. Focusing on the use of a few shades of color, very saturated and widely spatulated and distinct from the others, particular attention is paid to the free and energetic gestures, in the controlled randomness that the artist wants to express in the various forms assumed by the color. Creating an almost whirling movement that makes the various elements amalgamate as a whole, the artist wants to impart this sense of energy to the color that ultimately transmits in the observer.

Matina Vossou, Electra’s Mirror & The Birds That Fly In The Underground Tunnels - Although Electra is grieving for the loss of her father, she wears a wreath of pink magnolias and applies lipstick in front of her mirror. Beside her, there’s a “lekythos”, a vessel for libation, with water for the funerary rites. Instead of her face, she can only see her father’s reflection. The mirror looks like a window overlooking a tunnel (the Underworld). A colourful bird (symbol of the suppressed desires) has escaped from the cage of life and is hanging upside down trapped in the shutter of the other dimension. Above it there’s an elm sapling uprooted (elm trees were believed to grow in Hades); a projection of her feelings; detachment, bereavement & loneliness.

Maroula Lambis, Marie #2 - This piece brings attention to Marie van Goethem, Degas’ model for Little Dancer The duality in the piece [sculpture/shadow, image/thread, recto/verso] echoes her life as a ballerina of the Paris Opera Ballet. In the 1800s girls Marie’s age entered the ballet school to earn a wage, ostensibly relieving their families of poverty. Overworked and underpaid, their bodies belonged to the Stage, and behind the scenes to their Protectors - wealthy older men who took them on as courtesans. My intention with these works is to spotlight Womens Rights and the abuse of power against women and their bodies. Although small gains towards Womens Equality have been achieved, many injustices continue to this day.

{Alice}, Testing the Water - 60x80cm Acrylic on wood - I had never been here. This was new. A small body of water, a tiny pool, separated from the ocean. While the ocean is fairly cold, this pond is warm, as it has been heating up peacefully under the sun. A gust of wind or a touch of toes creates small ripples, in circles that go away and never come back. The surface of the water also reflects what is above: clouds, birds and planes. My feet are discovering what lies at the bottom. Unknown sensations, as I step on rocks, sand, algae or twigs. I still get shivers when I get in. And when I get out of it, the clouds of disturbed matter settle under the water, the surface comes back to its tranquil stillness, reflecting the sky creating new pictures, connections in my mind.

George Agapitidis, Dive into it - The diver is lunging into a sea of changes and new experiences leaving behind his older self and his comfort zone. A transformative event that many people were seeking and experienced during the pandemic. Changing yourself is the probably the hardest thing someone will experience. The diver is in the process of that, diving and entering a new world where he is trying to wash his problems, regrets, mistakes and self-doubts behind. Jiiho, Esquisse for Golden Crutches (Daedalus) - The bodies of mythical beings with wings are usually described as having both a healthy human body and elegant wings. However, the relationship between the human body and the wings that cannot fly is similar to the relationship between the legs and crutches that cannot walk. Accordingly, unlike angels created by God (nature), humans Daedalus and Icarus will have to experience the artificial body transformation process. Wings are elegant aids that prove high-dimensional physical abilities and at the same time become prosthetic devices that prove unstable physical conditions that lose stable walking ability.

Every day I see the people of Ukraine being killed and displaced from their country. The innocent people, especially the children are affected in ways most of us will never know or understand. The children have lost their innocence...at a time in their lives when they should be learning, growing, and being excited by life, they are thrown into this senseless war Putin has started. Mia Delores, Cielo - This a 40x30 portrait painting of my brother who passed away two years ago. Cielo means heaven in Spanish and I named it that because he’s truly my angel and I know he’s in a better place. As my medium I used oil/acrylic. I also painted light glares around him to represent how a camera can create a glare from light.

He was very photogenic and always loved being in front of the camera. I really enjoyed using a mix of both oil and acrylic paint. Oil paint helped me blend certain parts of his face to make it more realistic and acrylic paint helped me create more texture to make the painting more 3D like.

Alessandro Villanucci, Waiting for the high tide - An old cannon aimed at the ocean in Mont Saint-Michel: it seems to me the symbol of a challenge that man makes towards nature, but which he is inevitably destined to lose. Steve Jensen, Nordic Sunken Vessel - For me, the boats are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey, perhaps it is the voyage to the other side or a journey into the unknown. My parents are from Norway. My father was a fisherman. My grandfather was a fisherman. My other grandfather was a boat builder. Upon the death of my parents, I made a boat for their ashes and buried them at sea. Something like a contemporary Viking funeral. The person’s interior body exists through the patient’s imaginative faculty receiving the vicariously observed data. The sheep box made of a surgical drape is suggestive of the surgeon’s examination, peering into the body through a hole. Lorna Robertson, Painting for 18 Musicians - “Painting for 18 Musicians” is a painting about using colour to express sound - visualising musical time, movement and rhythm as the subject. The painting took shape while I was thinking about the continuous curves of sound waves, and how a digital sound recording is split into tiny discrete chunks (many thousands per second). The title was inspired by a live performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Music for 18 Musicians’, a minimalist composition written between 1974–1976. On hearing the piece for the first time, the visualisations that occurred during the performance influenced the development of the painting, and encapsulated the ideas around the structure and behavior of music and abstraction.

Alisa Burachuk, The Simple Movements vol.1. - This series of artworks is inspired by Kandinsky’s studies about a dot and a line. I would call this particular direction an organic abstract art. The organic shapes “dancing” in the space, moving gently, pushed by the circumstances of their experience. They represent the seeds of life, living matter which is obliged to deform in the face of an abstract graphic matter. The Simple Movements collection was made using mixed media for the base layers, geometric objects and lines. On the opposite side the oil paint was used for the organic shapes. This approach allows the viewer to distinguish objects and their role on the canvas.

Hiking in the mountains is demanding, but it is an inspiring landscape, and I knelt to photograph the many shapes and patterns of the dried leaves and flowers in my path.

I imagined them highly textured, in a palette of rich, saturated colours, so, treating the photograph as my canvas, I interpreted as I repainted the photograph by hand digitally in layers to achieve washes, enlarging the image to paint pixel by pixel where detail required. Derick Kurtz, Dia de Los Difuntos - Derick Kurtz, originally from Ft. Collins, Colorado, now resides in the Tampa Bay area, bringing his fresh acrylic funk style to the gulf coast of Florida. Derick has been an artist his whole life, although he’ll be the first to tell you that it’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get where he is in his art journey today. He’s developed a lot over his years as an artist and has learned from some amazing mentors who have helped him cultivate his unique style. Derick had the opportunity to learn from Zoey Stevens, previous Art Director for Disney, in his garage in Cali. Zoey taught him how to make his own canvas and really pushed him to test his art limits.

Maitha Alazawi, 99 Names of Allah - My 99 names of Allah painting was made with positive energy. The Energy will be to everyone who falls his eyes on it. The colors of the painting make you smile every time you look at it. What is the reason this painting has positive energy and high spirituality? Is that from the day I started with it till the end a special positive vibration has been opened in the space with Qur’an. Meditation Practices were made when I am working with it. I used oil painting in this art piece and it took me 3 months to finish it. Also, the painting was finished on a very special and lucky date which is 10/10.

Matthew Mark, American Dark - This work is based around from a historical image used for this project in the form and technique of “appropriation”. The original image was called “American Gothic” from painter Grant Wood from the modernism period in 1930. The original work depicted an art genre called “social realism” capturing farm workers, working class people during the hard times of being disillusioned during the great depression years. In my latest recreation from the original I put a twist in the image and created a more neo post-modern, contemporary setting and atmosphere, updating the image on how I feel at the moment socially/ politically during present time in 2022.

Elzbieta Zdunek, Tomorrow Belongs To Me - This piece borrows the title from the famous song from The Cabaret. After a sweet and innocent beginning, the message of the song quickly becomes horrifying, and the tomorrow looms like a nightmare. While such an interpretation of the artwork is possible, it also - deliberately - creates a discomfort. The figure looks broken, but is it breaking free? Is it the hero or the villain? Is the hand controlling or protecting? Is the act of rebellion a blessing or a curse? Is the title ironic or a homage? Are we observing a blessing or a curse? I want the answer to depend on the audience’s biases and prejudices.

Anna Sobkowiak, Through the Looking-Glass - At first glance, the painting is an intimate portrait of a young ordinary woman caught in her daily routine. In the mirror, however, one can see a reflection of another one whose pose and appearance are quite different from the figure in front of the mirror. Flowers, be it hand-held, in a vase or on both of the ladies’ dresses, constitute a significant referential point since a flower — as a symbol of mystery, beauty, grace and wabi-sabi — is the only element known to the viewer that connects both worlds, namely the real one and the one in the mirror. This in turn creates the atmosphere of je ne sais quoi, perhaps somewhere over the rainbow or in wonderland…

Rufus Martin, Ellie - Ellie was sculpted from life in her family garden over 4 hours on an afternoon in the sun. The intention of this work was to capture Ellie’s complex and diverse emotional landscape, is matched only by her apparent intelligence and sensitivity. This work has been cast into Jesmonite to reflect Ellie’s silvery completion, so much a part of her but something hard to express in a medium with little colour.

Cristian Diez-Sanchez, Confussion 61, In the Street - This work belongs to a series started in 2020, middle of the pandemic, called “Confusion”. Everyone was trying to solve their lives individually, looking for a way to go through the difficulties of the moment by themselves, without worrying about what was happening next door, in the nearby neighborhood or in a distant country; amazingly alone surrounded by the world in the same circumstances. This loneliness being surrounded appears in each work in a different way, expressing different experiences. “Confussion 61” is a large group moving in different directions, just crossing by. Too close and too far away. Barely seeing each other, all together and so far apart. A large crowd and so much loneliness.

Beate Steinmetz, Stay Strong - The protagonists of my portraits are people, mostly women, with attitude, strength and that certain indefinable something. I seek to go beyond the traditional portrait, therefore I focus less on likeness as more on capturingthe beauty and strengh in their characters. I attempt to uncover the unseen qualities of the person ortheir emotions. To describe the fisical appearance I use monocromatic skintones but to reflect their personality or a certain moodI use a palet of several carefully choosed colours. Most of my portraits have a direct eye contact, which aims to establish a connection with the viewer to offer the oportunity to interpret his own perception of the painting.

Magda Betkowska, Elody - Color influences your soul - My paintings show the beauty of every woman with all her imperfections and suggests to the viewer that each one of them can be who she wants to be and the key to her happiness is self-acceptance. Society`s expectations shouldn`t determine her value and identity. The woman shouldn`t be afraid or ashamed of living in our own way. Every one of us has a right to choose and create her own reality.

Sagie Yakir, Come to the edge - This oil painting was created as an expression of an uncanny feeling towards going forward in life, after two years of world pandemic. It suddenly seemed like the past was no longer relevant, while the future, is not what it used to be. And so, the only question was – Now what? The figure portrayed here, is standing at the top of a ladder in an unclear surrounding, seems uncertain and hesitant, and at the same time, child like curious. For, sometimes, the only way to go, is over one’s own edges (Inspired by the poem “Come to the edge” by Guillaume Apollinaire)

Pedro Kubrick, Metamorphosis in space - Metamorphosis in Space talks about the evolution that some human beings are experiencing in our world in these changing times. In space we found this character being crossed by a light ray that makes his colors change while being scanned by a robotic arm. Most of my artwork is inspired by music and its sounds, has a futuristic, cyberpunk and neon-laden aesthetic, often manifested with surreal, experimental and sensory scenarios, and that aims you to travel far through music vibrations contained in this artwork within the metaverse.

Selina Kritikou, Fleeing away - “Fleeing away’’ is a piece born while watching images of people in complete despair , sending their children across the borders , trying to escape the regime and not even knowing if they will ever see them again…Such a devastating scene , one that should never have taken place. This image overwhelmed me and I needed to reflect it through my stones. The magic of this art lies in the fact that simple stones and shells awaken to narrate stories , either pleasant or unpleasant, always a part of reality. Apart from some string and wire, the specific pebble art piece is solely made with stones and pieces of shells.

Darina Khamzina, 11 years old, World Wonders - Darina was just 10 years old when she created this painting. This is what she said about it: “Every cell on the painting represents the wonders of the world - there is fire, flowers, sunset, space, volcano, trees, hair, different shades of colors, and even human.

All these things have a personal story for me with bright memories and sad feelings at the same time. When you put everything together you get like a kaleidoscope of wonder that is impossible to see all together at once in the real world. And that makes this painting a Wonder by itself, it gives you joy and excitement.”

Emily-Rose Thompson, ‘Remnants of Society’ - A watercolour monotype overlayed with a dry-point etch. I have used the subtlest textures, lines and tones almost in a repeating way, to create an encoded print. When examined further, the piece reveals moments of tension found in the cities most familiar to me, Norwich and London. I wanted to build on the idea of contrast, the figurative and architectural but also the contrast of texture and tone. It is the interaction between the fluidity of ink and line seen in the piece above that I am particularly interested in.

Christiane Ahlers, Summer tale - My painting “Summer tale” was inspired by the lightness of being which I experience as an artist. Light cloudy structures and soft colours symbolise the light-heartedness of my art, which always captivates me. My art is very varied and with this piece I have had the chance to create something new by experimenting with different colours and textures in a very carefree way. The brush swings across the canvas from deep within my heart, and so this work was created on a beautiful summer evening in my studio - with a feather-light white wine, relaxed jazz and a smile on my lips. Can you also feel the lightness of being?

Nadine Kooiker, Birds of Paradise - Lush and Feathered. Dramatic and Eccentric. Exotic colors in hot and cold tones that show contrast and variety, blend in and stand out. High above the rainforests, birds of paradise gather to display at the break of daylight. Mythical creatures as they are, fan out their delicate wing feathers, as they prepare for their unique courtship dance. My painting captures the beauty of these fascinating creatures. The sun rises and brings out a warm glow. A sheer layer of music tones resembles the bird’s call and tries to portray the erratic movement of their dance.

Nadine Kooiker, Earth, Wood and Fire - All ancient healing traditions believed that our bodies are made up of a combination of natural elements. Through these lenses, our ancestors were able to understand the human, mental, emotional and physical constitution to successfully heal their body and minds. Feng shui teaches that the elements can be balanced through their interactions with other elements. The energy of this painting represents the colours and shapes of Earth, Wood and Fire. Earth energy is nurturing, caring, grounded and maternal, whilst fire is the most powerful and active of all Feng Shui elements, representing passion, energy and enthusiasm. Wood stands for growth and creativity. This painting awakens, activates and grounds.

Jean Gonzalez Lomasto, Mama Viva’s - My work comes from glimpses of things that I almost missed, but are stored nevertheless, in memory and rise to the surface. He had great respect for her relating back to his childhood, the details of which I do not know.

Mary Trend and Yuliana Sibalo, Flow #3 - Our paintings are not formally created as paintings, as they are non-deliberate and unintentional, the only intention is to let the painting paint itself, formless and without context; using the medium of watercolour allows for us to let the painting create its own flow. This collaborative process is meant to assist us in creating trust with ourselves, each other, and the rhythms of nature. This particular work was created on a sunny Sunday morning while discussing Brazilian jungles. When we feel like the painting is finished we notice what we see, and in this one we see a tropical penguin kissing a flamingo. What can you see?

Loneliness sought as a way of not relating to others is an attitude that is becoming more and more frequent in our society. Although it has always existed, today it is becoming more frequent and I believe that technology encourages this type of attitude more and more. Joss Liao, Material Experiment No.64 (the shine) - Research-based and material driven, my practice revolves around sensual representation of the body in pain. Material Experiment No.64 (The Shine) was created using a technique called slumping. I laid a piece of skin-tone glass plate on a cluster of nails and let it sink into the nails as the temperature rises. The plate eventually took shape of the nails and was suspended in the making process, a slice of time. Through this piece, I drew parallel between the elasticity and skin-like qualities of glass and the metaphorical body. It delivers the membrane qualities of glass as well as nuanced emotions that hints at visceral, intimate and tender experiences. This work inspired a subsequent solo show titled A Place To Land.

Her oil painting, printmaking, and performance respond to and reinterpret the natural objects that are in a limbo of recognition, permeating poetics, on the threshold of the subjecthood, the recognizable and the representable. Christopher Lovesky, The Hand of Mysteries - The Hand of Mysteries (also referred to as ‘The Hand of the Mason’ or ‘The Hand of the Philosopher’) is an ancient symbol first seen in the 18th century derived from the mysterious field of Alchemy. It depicts the symbols of apotheosis, or the transformation of man into “god”. The hand is believed to be an invitation to discover the greatest secrets our universe has to offer as its symbols hold the keys to divinity. However, it’s not just something that can be taught… you must discover them on your own. Once the secrets are learned and the hand is opened you are in a sense reborn. The lifestyle I mentioned in this piece is powered by the persian miniature and culture and beauty of colours that provided for good quality of life and activities in the earth. The connection between humans and nature is a part of my artwork. In the middle of so many activities with my characters inside the painting, you can find a man character who is running or struggling. I think human beings always have challenges beyond life and death. For me, peace is basically the most important element to building a community to start life. Her artwork aims to encourage the viewer to pause for thought and contemplate life’s endless opportunities for learning and how this can be interpreted as an expression of creativity.
