Roberto Baldi inizia la sua attività di modellista ed intagliatore a Firenze, nel quartiere di Santo Spirito, luogo in cui nasce e che da sempre è caratterizzato da un numero considerevole di eccellenti botteghe artigiane. Viene indirizzato dal padre, Alfredo Baldi, al suo stesso lavoro di scultore ed ai suoi stessi studi, lavorando nel frattempo in bottega. Importanti, per la sua formazione, sono gli incontri con lo storico dell’arte e scrittore Professor Ammannati, noto per le sue teorie sul Rinascimento, con il Professor Masini, insigne restauratore e con il Professor Giovanni Miglioli, pittore, scrittore, scenografo, regista e costumista. All’età di 23 anni realizza con quest’ultimo, nel suo studio di Guastalla, lavori in marmo, in quercia, in bronzo ed in altri materiali. Crea modelli per argentieri e bronzisti ed esegue prototipi per complementi d’arredo, oggettistica ed articoli da regalo. La realizzazione del suo lavoro non può prescindere dal disegno iniziale, a grandezza naturale, che deve rispettare sempre rigorosissime geometrie, all’interno delle quali l’artista esprimere la sua fantasia ed in cui è importante la distribuzione delle masse. Successivamente passa alla lavorazione del legno stagionato o di altro materiale da inviare al preparatore, falegname o tornitore. Il disegno, realizzato su un lucido, viene ricalcato poi sul legno, per iniziare la fase di lavorazione dell’intaccatura, eseguita con le sgorbie. La prima sbozzatura mette in risalto la parte disegnata mentre la seconda dà forma all’oggetto. Infine, il lavoro viene rifinito con tassellate o altro. Oggi i suoi lavori sono presenti in gallerie pubbliche e private.

Roberto Baldi began his activity as a mould maker and carver in Florence, in the Santo Spirito district, where large numbers of excellent craft workshops have always existed. His father Alfredo Baldi encouraged him to take up the same job - sculpture - and studies as he himself had done, while working meanwhile in the workshop. Of great importance to his professional growth was meeting art historian and author, Professor Ammannati, for his theories on the Renaissance, together with Professor Masini, excellent restorer and Professor Giovanni Miglioli, painter, writer, scenographer, director and costume designer. With the latter, in his Guastalla studio, he produced works in marble, oak, bronze and other materials, aged only 23. He makes moulds for silver- and bronze-smiths, and produces prototypes for interior design items and giftware. His work is based on the initial drawing, life size, which must always be strictly geometrical, but within which the artist expresses his imagination and distribution of mass is key. The next step is to work on the seasoned wood or other material, which is sent to the joiner or woodturner who will produce the object. The drawing, on tracing paper, is transferred to the wood and the carving begins, done with scalpels. The first passage brings out the design, then in the second phase the object takes shape. Finally, the work is finished with wood inserts, etc. Today his creations can be seen in public and private galleries.
