Art! Vancouver is an international curated fair created with the idea of discovering galleries and independent artists and showcasing the careers and achievements of creative minds. PRESENTED BY

point of interest

Now in its third year, Art! Vancouver continues to take advantage of an urban stage primed for an international art fair. The city’s natural beauty, ease of living, cultural diversity and amenities make it ripe for an international art fair, says Lisa Wolfin, director of Art! Vancouver. “After seeing what other cities have done and what we have to offer it’s clear Vancouver has what it takes to be a destination art hub.” Over 80 artists and galleries from Europe, Asia, South America, the USA and Canada show original works to an audience of curators, collectors, designers, gallerists, other artists and art lovers from around the globe. A sampling of this year’s artists include Ryan King of HGTV’s Carver King’s fame, Janis Project multidisciplinary artist Frank Hyder, Montreal-born Israeli artist Johanan Herson and emerging Georgian artist Ia Liparteliani. Along with its signature Face of Art gala opener this year Art! Vancouver celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary through the appreciation of art. CBC Arts TV's Amanda Parris will be hosting the opening night gala on May 25th. Parris will also present moderate a panel discussion on Public Art over the course of the weekend, along with experts on the field.

TULIPS. Lee Ann Wolfin

As part of its commitment to the broader community Art! Vancouver continues to support local charity. This year’s recipient is Vancouver based Battered Women’s Support Services. For over 35 years, BWSS has provided counseling to women who have experienced abuse. For more information go to www.bwss.org.

The show takes place May 25th to the 28th 2017 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, for more information visit the website

Hui-ju Chen (Mickey)

YELLOW MOOD. Acrylic, 70cm x 90cm

Hui-ju Chen (Mickey) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has kept her passion of making art until today. Along with her teaching job at Shantou University, she always finds time to create various styles of work. It is interesting to see how her work has varied from photography to acrylic painting to mixedmedia to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes that, in the art world, there are no real errors but different thoughts and processes with different outcomes. Without experimentation, she feels, art is not art. She gets inspiration from different aspects of life. She always hopes to learn and create different kinds of work by making use of her own different life experiences.

12 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2017

It is normal to have lots of frustrations and doubts as one goes through the phases of creation. For Mickey, the biggest frustration has been the temptation and pressure to build and keep up one particular style in order to be a professional artist. Though it is true that a dedication to one style may enable one to come a little closer to perfection in that style, Mickey feels that art is about taking risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses a very important quality of art--the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to continue working in different ways and experimenting with different styles. Art making, for her, is not just a way to express herself but a way to define her existence. www.ratgoofy.com

Kasia Szczesniewski

WINDY FANTASY. Triptych 1, 90cm x100cm.

Kasia Szczesniewski was born in Legnica, Poland, but she has always felt Wroclaw was her hometown. At Wroclaw Polytechnic University she gained an educational background in Architecture and Design. She obtained a teaching degree from College of Legnica, specializing in art education. During her youth, Kasia had the opportunity to see many beautiful examples of European architecture, sculptures and paintings, which strongly influenced her way of looking at art. After immigrating to the United States, she completed

several college level art and design courses, and attended numerous professional workshops. She received many awards, was interviewed by Polish radio and TV stations, and published in local newspapers. Nowadays, Kasia is an active member of the Chicago art community, showing and selling her works, doing commissions, and organizing art events. www.kasiaartstudio.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 13

Wendy Coco

SWEET KISS. Photography.

Once a featured artist of The Queer Gallery, Wendy Coco is a photographer who specializes in capturing the images of the living world. Born in Maine she first used her camera to capture images of rural living. In 2002 she moved to Western Massachusetts where she began exploring her interest in the arts and in floral photography. As a Social Worker Wendy quickly found a way to combine her love of photography and her 20 year experience in housing the homeless to capture the reality of living today. She has been blessed with the opportunity to meet thousands of people around the country who are struggling under the weight of poverty. Encapsulated in her work are poignant images of individuals who continually work towards survival and seek the basic enjoyment of life.

THE EMBRACE. Oil on Canvas, 50cm x 60cm

IT WAS MAY. Acrilic on Wood, 50cm x 60cm. 2015

Anna Maria Giordano

You can see in the varied artworks by Anna Maria Giordano the research into an ultimate end of painting: to transform every kind of experience, from the dream to the everyday life, from the microscope to the stars vision, from realism to abstraction, in a continual pursuit of quality and in the foundation of a new expressive language. Each work reveals an accomplished harmony, and one senses the preparatory part, such as the choice of the medium, on which she will impress pigments, sometimes very earthy, securing the light to be turned into life energy; or as a hardworking choice between dozens of drawings and/or anyway images, to retrace a spiritual path of classical architecture. The result is a pattern of the image with a central perspective into deep space projecting plans, through the firm path of diagonal lines, re-edited the “divina proportione” of the golden section of the Grand Masters. You understand a follow-up, marked through time, as a moment of pure reflection: a formal control of the balance between space, light and image through the scrupulous examination of the ended work at the mirror, subject to the introspective "labor limae". Real root of rigor and memory, that, enhancing severity and discipline, even more vivifies the sight of the harmony of these works. Her works deliver the legacy of the past to the evocative power of the present.

Intense brushstrokes, the result of chromatic passages thinning down, but equally sweet and tireless, they own the space: the incommensurable, between the real and the metaphysical, which the peaceful introspective proceeding by the artist gives to painting of timeless high poetic value, between evocative spirituality and thematic inspiration. Anna Giordano shows us the reality of the unreal: everything is illusion. Even life. On a sort of instinctive expressionism, supplemented by cubist and futurist depictions, Anna Giordano elaborates an image basic structure of high dynamism and immediate visual impact, deliberately without excessive erudite references. From it, the artist moves his tries in an abstract area, in the surrealist and dadaist field with certain unpredictable and playful combinations of shapes and heterogeneous materials. Altogether in her works one can recognize that substantial component of eclecticism that is the basis of the production of Anna Giordano images. A component that, paradoxically, we could consider as homogenizing all her activity. – Manlio Gaddi, September 2016. www.webalice.it/amagiord www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 17

LOVE IS IN THE AIR. Watercolor on Paper, 14" x 11" Won 2nd Place in Professional Category at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, August 14 - 22, 2015

Natalya B. Parris Natalya Borisovna Parris is a strong believer in contributing to the community by promoting art awareness and education. This is why she likes to display her artworks at agricultural fairs, community centers, and public libraries. By visiting those places, children from a very young age have an opportunity to see diverse art media and learn that the world is very colorful with many unique ways to express yourself such as writing books or creating an artwork. Ms. Parris teaches art classes for children at the Arts Barn, Gaithersburg, MD and through the art she explains her students that there is a place for every individual to express their inner world; there are as many options as there are souls. Currently she is teaching Imaginative Art class there.

Ms. Parris hopes her artworks encourage each adult to look at the world around them as they did when they were children; to be very open-minded and curious about new things. Perhaps, within their souls, they could find a hidden door to the room where they locked all their childhood fantasies and dreams. This spring Ms. Parris is teaching Pop Art: Abstract Expressions, Neo-Dada and Combines class for adults at BlackRock Center For The Arts in Germantown MD and at summer time she will teach there Art Escapade Around the World class where students will explore the works of artists from around the world including Kandinsky, Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Carle and create their own multi media masterpieces.

Peace begins with a smile. ~ Mother Teresa When I was a child I read a story about a zebra who had lost its stripes ... a story with a moral. When Zebra saw herself without the stripes she felt suddenly without identity. Seeking to regain its stripes is actually rediscovering itself. A story that teaches you to you to follow your dreams, to always be you, never stay in place but always in transformation, make friends and seek for the adventure witch hides always in what is new ... My Zebra is happy because she is the one who found more than lost stripes...

Anca Stefanescu Anca Stefanescu began studying painting at age of 12. Since then art has always been her passion. MY LIFE is represented by bright colors – like red, blue and yellow, but sometimes it turns bleak, in grey and black then it turns to a kaleidoscope of vivid colors again. “The COLOURS OF MY LIFE are the stories from my life, staring from my grandparents who I grow up with, stories of my parents and brother. The stories of my life, my lovers and my friends, my husband, my children and my dogs.” The COLOURS OF MY LIFE is the quintessence of Anca Stefanescu’s life, all the things that she lived with and done. “All the stories and new beginnings that brought me here.” https://www.saatchiart.com/coml 26 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2017

They are founded in the very basis of the ancient tradition of human anatomy. A study that dates back to the Greeks and beyond. The sculptures incorporate aspects of human motion that started with Kouros figures and developed during the renaissance. ANGEL OF LIGHT. Digital Art.

Diamante Lavendar As an artist, I seek to convey emotions and thoughts through my work whether it be painting, drawing photography or digital art. If I'm working on photographs, I enjoy capturing raw emotion from the environment around me. I see the world as a ready-made canvas! In my painting, drawing and digital work I enjoy abstract art… taking a concept and creating it on paper in a unique way. I believe art is an experience not only by the artist but by the observer as well.
