Barebrush founder, Ilene Skeen, bares all to Art & Beyond – her personal journey in the arts, the inspiration behind the site, its goals, and what lies ahead.

BAREBRUSH BARES ALL

M

ore than ever before, art representing the nude is showing up in galleries and museum exhibitions, but there is still a ways to go before garnering a broad cultural acceptance of the nude as a legitimate subject for public consumption.

No-one knows this better than Ilene Skeen, founder of Barebrush.com, a website dedicated to showcase those artists whose practice focuses on the nude figure. Although founded in 2006, Ilene’s interest in drawing from the model dates back several decades; hers is a story come full circle. After completing a disappointing stint at art school in the 60’s, New Yorker Ilene Skeen’s path led her into a world of business and computers far removed from the art scene. Nonetheless, over the years Skeen continued drawing from the model, producing thousands of watercolor sketches of the nude and successfully selling them online in the days before eBay or etsy.

After leaving the business world behind, Skeen’s interest in art veered her towards the anthropology of art, where she completed a Master’s thesis on how gallery owners reconcile commercial success while keeping true to their artistic aesthetic. Following this endeavor and facing retirement, Skeen’s decision to open her website up to other artists seemed like a natural development.

Armed with a spontaneous logo sketched out on a napkin and a year's worth of advertising in the New york Gallery Guide, Barebrush.com was launched.

LM: What inspires you to draw and paint the nude figure?

LM: What is it you hope to provide artists on Barebrush.com?

IS: I really don’t believe in the saying: “Beauty is only skin deep”.

Quite the opposite – skin deep beauty is actually irrelevant. I am interested in getting into the soul and letting the spirit come through.

In my mind, a successful painting or sketch conveys dignity, grace and poise. I enjoy making ordinary people look beautiful! I think about my work as celebrating the uniqueness of people. Every model is totally unique; I can look back at a drawing of a quick one-minute

IS: Validation, exposure and opportunity. Artists get their own page on Barebrush where they can upload new images and update their profile. Artwork for the monthly calendars are selected from the artists’ pages by independent curators, giving the Barebrush artists a great way to be seen and critiqued by art professionals. The concept of the calendars also gives the art a

temporal context; when collectors come to the site, they continually see fresh work. I’m also very excited about the launch of e-commerce on the Artists’ Market. Artists whose work is repeatedly selected by invited curators can now sell their work through Barebrush, and collectors can feel confident that they are purchasing consistently high-standard, quality work.

LM: What’s next for Barebrush.com?

IS: I can’t give the details away yet, but it’s related to my theory of the Four Classes of Art Buyers, gleaned from years of experience.

LM: Can you explain your theory? Sounds intriguing!

IS: In a nutshell, at the top of the hierarchy are the Collectors. These buyers are dedicated to a particular artist and are committed to purchasing that artist’s creative output. Below the Collectors are the Art Decorators – the ones who buy art that go over the couch. The next rung down is what I call the Art Tourist. Art Tourists don’t buy art but they go to see art and want to take away a souvenir of their art experience, like a catalogue or a postcard. At the bottom of the heap are the Voyeurs. I call them Art Voyeurs because they don’t make any effort to come out and see art. But just like real voyeurs, they do enjoy looking. I can build on that. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing to transform Art Voyeurs into Art Tourists, transform Art Tourists into Art Decorators, and ultimately transform Art Decorators into Collectors….?

Today, Barebrush.com has expanded to include other genres besides the nude to show the depth and breadth of its artists. Barebrush has built up a loyal collector base and a robust membership; the site gets a few thousand hits a day and counting. Included at the bottom of Barebrush’s Home Page are the following words: “Online since 2006. Proving it's OKAY to enjoy the art of the nude.” We couldn’t agree more.

Dick Bobnick I am a nationally published illustrator and portrait artist having produced award winning illustration for over 30 years. I live and work in the Twin Cities of St. Paul/Minneapolis in the suburb city of Burnsville, Minnesota. I have produced art for many national ad agencies, corporations, publishers and producers of collectibles since opening my own studio in 1990.

Prior to that I was lead illustrator at four major graphic arts studios in Minneapolis where I had to produce realistic

illustration for every imaginable subject you could guess: Portraits, people, aircraft, food, maps, landscapes, products, product usage and historical to name just a few. I started my own studio to create the subject matter I most enjoyed doing namely people, celebrities and show business sujects.

Olivia Boa Olivia Boa was born in 1981 in Yvelines in France. At a young age Boa was attracted to the world of the art and in particular, painting.

Boa began her formation into an artist at the age of 10 with the help of Yves Armani, an artist who taught her the basiscs. From the age of her 14, Boa pursued her work and her research in painting in a self-taught way.

In addition to her work as an artist, Olivia is also a therapist and in 2012 she proposed a subtle mixture of her work in therapy mixed with her work in abstract art.

In 1998, Boa decided to release hersefl from conventional structures of the academic painting, by turning on the abstract art.

In 2011, she worked the concept of "generations" in art, namely to paint a subject on various energy perceptions. For example of a landscape, Olivia Boa is going to draw all the energy yin and to transmit it on a work, while realizing simultaneously another work of the same landscape but in an energy yang, so forming a linen

Debbi Chan On the cusp of two creative signs, the tiger and the rabbit, I was born in Houston, Texas. With a creative push from day one, I took up the brush by age ten. In my early years as a budding artist I decided that oil painting was not my thing but watercolor and ink were. That really never changed but the style vacillated from realism to fantasy throughout those formative years. It was not until a bit of aging wisdom came to me that I sought out a teacher and found Frank Chiu, a master artist in traditional Chinese painting. He mentored me for over a decade and was later joined by his wife, Judy.

They showed me that just taking Sumi lessons was not enough.

I involved myself in Chinese culture, philosophy, and art until it coursed through my veins and I saw the world through different eyes. My teacher gave me an artist name – Sosum.

He said I always do what I say I will do and SOSUM was the He chose. What He did not know is that the main reason I got in to traditional Chinese art was to paint on silk. Sosum also means,

through the root character, threads of silk. I learned much from this wise teacher. then I took an invitation to visit Idaho for a three weeks vacation.

Four days before my departure for home, I decided to live here and when I went back home it was only to pack my apartment and say two goodbyes: one to the Buddhist Temple where I was an ordained nun; the other, to the Chiu's, my mentors and teachers who had become family. Frank Chiu threw the IChing without my knowledge and four days later in my new home he told me what the sticks had said..... GO TO THE WESTERN MOUNTAINS...so now a decade has passed. I own a farm on ten acres of paradise, and my heart and art are reaching heights not reached by many... I can truly say that I am rich – rich with no money. And art is still as exciting as it was when I picked up that paintbrush fifty years ago.

Gabi Domenig Pictures of man fascinate me since I can remember. I am mainly inspired by light, shadows, colors, emotions and human forms.

The eyes are playing a special role in my paintings. I try to capture moments (not only) with the brush, try to breathe soul into them and I want to build up emotional tensions. I want to convey mood and emotion with my paintings, want to bring something in motion. My great wish is that a spark jumps over to the viewer and touches him in his heart and in his soul.

Joachim Gerschler Joachim Gerschler is 67 years old. He has been working for a few decades as the top restorer on historical buildings in Berlin doing analysis of the building`s history, the technical requirements of restoring them in the original sense and doing the restoration work himself and with his staff. Since 2010 he has begun to paint oil on canvas in rakel (spatula) technique and has produced up to now more than 100 such paintings, mostly in sizes of one to two m2, some in smaller

sizes and some up to 10 m2. In this field of art he is up to now completely unknown. He is still most busily producing new paintings. Now it seems to be time to get known internationally and he is looking for a competent party which is best suited to promote his works. Edvard Ghazaryan My painting style is original; I paint free and do not hung up with a definite painting style, but have been impressed by the styles and techniques of European painters of all eras: those are 19th century several French painters that did paint under open sky, reviving gorgeous color gamma - giving absolutely natural impression of the air and sun light … 1890`s post impressionists (Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh…), abstract painters Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich in the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th. I have created this painting style and technique by revising realistic fine art and international art - from Egypt to 21st century.

CJ Hungerman CJ is originally from Pittsburgh. He attended West Liberty State College and West Virginia University. Upon completion of each undergraduate college he received a B.S. in Graphic Design and a B.F.A. in Painting, respectively.

CJ went on to graduate school at Northern Illinois University receiving his Masters in Painting studying under Gordon Dorn, Josh Kind, and Ben Mahmoud. Marina Izrailevich The roots of my life and work are steeped in Russian art and culture. My earlier works had a whiff of Russian Constructivism (purely unconsciously; I was thrilled when it was pointed out to me). I am still searching for a way to express the breadth of feelings and emotions and the struggle for meaning and life’s anchor. My major influences are Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky and Marc Chagall. My heart leaps when I see their work and I think ‘how do I do THAT’.

My work is color, texture, and flow. Movement of pencil on paper, brush on canvas, and lines and shapes on a surface, any surface. The excitement of watching hot metal bending under acetylene torch and the flow of melting metal as two pieces are

joined together and a sculpture emerges. It's about the impossible, the discovery of a potential, and the excitement of seeing a completed work. And I continue the search.

I like to work with almost all media: oil on canvas; watercolor, chalk, charcoal, and pastel on paper; occasional painting or drawing in acrylic; welded steel sculpture. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts at LIU in New York. I have had several shows in galleries in Manhattan and Long Island, and one of my shows was featured in the New York Times. I currently live and work in Santa Cruz, California.

Jack Jasper studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He received a BFA in painting in 1970 and an MFA in 1975. He concentrated on painting in graduate school, but he also studied performance. His work in the time arts led him to explore the use of the body in conjunction with other media such as sound and film.

After receiving his MFA, he moved to Helena, Montana to pursue freelance design work with his brother. He eventually joined the staff of the Printers, Inc., as a designer. He continued painting and exhibited locally and regionally. In 1982 he received a grant from the Helena Film Society Grant to Artists Program. He collaborated with Montana poet, Rick Newby to design and produce the book, The Man in the Green Loden Overcoat, a juxtaposition of words and images.

While he was in Montana, he completed three years of course work in Medical Technology, pursuing a combined degree in chemistry and biology at Carroll College in Helena. He maintained his interest in the time arts by studying percussion.

After twelve years in Montana, he decided to return to a more urban environment. In 1988 he moved back to Chicago to further his joint careers in graphic design and painting.

He worked as a book designer at a small Chicago press for four years, working extensively with the Macintosh. After completion of a kindergarten through eighth grade series of books for the press, he pursued freelance graphic design work. At one point he worked for a company creating medical illustrations for doctors, nurses and hospitals. Currently, he is freelancing. He continues to

paint and periodically pursued courses in electronic design and imaging at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

He is represented by Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York city and shows his work in group shows. His work has been sold to various collectors.

From the experience of being surrounded by the powerful presence of nature in Montana, coupled with the study of life sciences and the Australian aborigines, he is drawn to experimenting with combinations of elements, sometimes alluding to air, earth, fire and water. He strives to represent nature’s electron dance that presupposes an ambient underlying sexuality, unfolding as a shimmering becoming, a synchronicity between disparate elements.

Darlene Kaplan Darlene Kaplan is an award-winning artist who has been captivating art lovers worldwide with her energetic Oriental Brush Paintings using Chinese watercolors for more than 40 years. Her many awards include First place at the Campagna Center, Alexandria, VA, First place at Green Spring Gardens, Annandale, VA, and Finalist at the 27th Annual Arts Competitions-Artist Magazine.

She grew up in the country in Tennessee and states, "All of my spare time was spent walking in the woods searching out bugs, plants and anything else that was alive. Those childhood days spent with nature is brought alive every time I put a brush stroke down on paper. All of my paintings are derived from nature." Darlene paints in the Lingnan style of Oriental Brush Painting which is a combination of Western and East Asian art.

She has been studying with Henry Wo Yue-Kee from 1994 till present. Mr. Wo paints and teaches this freestyle of ink and color on rice paper that originated in China centuries ago. "For many years I painted realism in oils before making the change to oriental brush painting. Studying martial arts/Tai Chi’ for years inspired me to try this medium, which I fell in love with 18 • Art&Beyond • March/April 2013

right away. The calming effect of grinding the ink before painting, the energy that is put into throwing ink on paper is just the greatest of pleasures that only this style of art allows me to feel." In her paintings Darlene attempts “to show purity in painting the snow, brightness in the moon, fragrance in the flower, sounds in the waterfall and spirit in people.” Before beginning, she has a vision in mind. "The mind has the plan and the hand follows. Once started, the brush and ink require full attention. Without the mood, brush and ink do not have anything to attach to; without brush and ink, the mood cannot be expressed. These are inseparable elements.” The artist has had many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States including an exhibition of over 100 paintings representing Oriental Brush Painting during the Cherry Blossom Festival 2012 in Washington, DC. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries and museums including Charles Sumner School Museum in Washington, DC, SoHo District in NY City, and many, many more locations. Brandy Kraft I am an artist from south Florida. I grew up with a strong fondness and yearning towards the arts but as a child, always doodling on my class papers and notebooks, but never thought it could be a serious profession. I was wrong. It’s been years since I was that misinformed little girl and now there is no turning back.

My artwork is an exploration. I have chosen the phenomena of light to interact with most recently and its constant variation presents innumerable challenges. I attended community college right after high school and moved to Chicago shortly after that to pursue an art degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

After a year there, I took a leave of absence and went to California upon hearing that a favorite painter of mine needed an intern.

Half a year there and then back to Chicago, but not for long. Soon I had met my husband and he uprooted me again. Sweden is a long way away, but nowhere is too far when you are in love. While abroad I studied at the Swedish Academy for Realist Art, where I

examined techniques of the old masters and spent my days drawing from life.

The painting I submitted for consideration by Art & Beyond is a portrayal of where love can take you. In the multi-media image I reference my own life through light and shadow. The prominent yellow and blue are the national colors of Sweden.

Today you can find me happily back in Chicago (with my husband) continuing my pursuit of education (back at SAIC) and in the studio, painting away as usual.

Paula Laflamme Born in Montreal in 1964, Paula Laflamme is a self taught artist and began painting in 1992.

Paula spent her childhood between land and sea, the slums of Montreal, and the richness of her ancestors, from Gaspé. Her paintings are her own compositions, they are her work.

Using her emotions and the expressions of the people she meets, she lives in interesting situations and moves deep into her characters and those who contemplate.

The everyday life, the mood of our society, the character and actions of the "Almighty" and others, those who make their little daily routine living their lives without anyone`s notice, are a valuable sources of inspiration for Paula.

Patrick Lee Patrick Lee is a professional artist and teacher who has exhibited work at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH. , the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. He has been involved in numerous group exhibitions, including the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts' 2009 Mid-Atlantic Juried Art Exhibition in which he received the “Best in Show” honor. In 2011, he was selected as

one of fifty finalists in the America China Oil Painting Artist's League's nationwide competition, Exhibition of Contemporary American and Chinese Realism. K.A.Letts I began my creative life in the theater. I am a graduate (MFA) from Yale Drama School, where I studied set and costume design. I have created sets and costumes for Juilliard School, Yale Repertory Theater, Alaska Repertory Theater and Wayside Theater in Virginia, among others. Although I no longer work in the theater, many of the skills and techniques I learned there have been useful to me in the studio.

My work features strong narrative content, much of which is based on myth, fable and fairy tale. My aesthetic has also been influenced by my interest in the Chicago Imagists, aboriginal art, Persian miniatures and “outsider” art.

James Lumpp Being born and raised on Long Island New York has played a large role in Jim’s landscape paintings. From swimming to surf casting with his father off Montauk Point, he has always loved the water and the ocean waves with its ever changing dynamic shapes and energy. He was educated at Villanova University as a Civil Engineer.

He was always sketching and drawing but didn’t turn to painting until later in his career. He has studied at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, NY; The Teaching Studios of Art in Oyster

Bay, NY and with friend and mentor Gianni (John) Monteleone. He is a current member of the Gold Coast Artist Guild in Glen Cove, NY. Jim always strives to push the realism in his artwork; from portraits, to landscapes and to capture depth in his still life.

Zlatko Milakovic ́

is a professional artistic painter. His artworks adorn walls of European collectors. Milaković can be reached exclusively via referrals. His artworks are taken directly in Milakovic’s studio.

His art pursue many different topics, but preference is given to the woman and her beauty. Milakovic’s work is on the border between abstraction and realism. If it works with oil on canvas, on one picture, topic he works for about a year. In the European galleries it is hard to come by to his work. The reason is simple. He works on one picture for a long time, and after exposure in the Gallery, picture quickly founds a buyer.

Milakovic taught sculpture in Zagreb (Croatia, Center for Contemporary Art) and painting in studios of several worldrenowned artists - teachers.

Zlatko Milakovic was born 53 years ago and has been living in very dynamic way. In his youth he was a top athlete (javelin thrower, champion), later manager of the famous banking group, insurance company, national association of business managers etc. By the age of 18, he has moved with his family (his father was a colonel in the army) and has been living in nine different cities in 4 different countries. He has a master's degree in political science and has been additionally trained by programs of world-renowned business schools. Nowadays, Milakovic wants to continue his career painting somewhere outside Europe. Recently, he is looking for a gallery which will recruited him and represent him. His working energy and sense for artistic motifs that draws attention are a guarantee that he will succeed.

Today he lives and works in Zagreb, the capital city of the Republic of Croatia.

Mila Ryk is a 3rd generation artist born in the Ukraine, she immigrated to United States in 1991.

Shortly after moving to Chicago, she was introduced to Leon Oks, an artist whose work has inspired her greatly. She has been taking art lessons in his studio for several years. “Leon has helped me free my mind and express myself in ways I never thought possible” she said.

Inspired by Art Nouveau and amazed by the endless beauty of Orchids, she developed her unique style and technique, which gave her the ability to share her vision and feelings with a viewers. Mila Ryk unites line work of figures, brushstrokes, colors and nature in one single form of harmony and beauty.

In 2009 Mila’s artwork has been published in the Best of America Oil Artists, Volume II book. Her art was listed in the International Dictionary of Artists 2011.

Sara Swan Sara Swan is a Los Angeles based artist. Her education includes fine art at Whitman College, design at UC Davis, and illustration at Art Center College of Design.

Sara primarily paints with oils on canvas, but she also uses chalk pastels on paper. Saturated and intense colors, unusual color combinations and textures characterize her work.

Her career began in illustration where she created pieces for books, magazines and newspapers that were humorous and highly stylized. Her fine art was derivative of her illustration style until a few years ago.

More recently, Sara has been looking at fashion from the 1940’s and 50’s for inspiration. Using vintage images of both

swimwear and formal evening gowns, Sara combines these with her own figure drawings to create paintings and drawings that celebrate not only fashion and glamour, but the human figure, body language and emotion as well.

Sara participates in the monthly Art Walk in downtown Los Angeles. She and other artists who have studios at Spring Arts Tower show their work in the mezzanine level gallery on the 2nd Thursday night to each month. “There is a wonderful synergy among us”, Sara says of this monthly exhibition.

Amy B.Trosino Amy B. Trosino is the founder and owner of Artventure Studio, LLC, a private art center in Medina, Ohio. Here, she teaches a variety of adult and children’s classes including illustration, ceramics, bookmaking, creative writing, portfolio, and gallery design. Trosino also teaches illustration at the University of Akron and has worked with various organizations across north east Ohio including The Medina County Achievement Center, Family First Council, Windfall School's Very Special Arts program for children with special needs, the Brecksville Center for the Arts, the Richfield Art Studio, and the Strongsville, Brunswick, and Medina public school systems. The drawings entered for Art & Beyond is part of Trosino’s Shapemaker series, a body of work inspired by the fields of children's book illustration, biology, and histology. Highly autobiographical, these pen and ink works invite the viewer to look closely for hidden and obvious meanings in the detail.

Trosino wanted these pieces to look as though she took a sample from her life and placed it under a microscope. Only through magnification can the viewer see the intricacies of how a life works and the experiences that shape it, intricacies that are unique to the whole of humanity as well as the individual.

Patricia Tuglus Patricia Tuglus has been taking classes and workshops for many years and in many mediums. She has earned a certificate in botanical art illustration from the Morton Arboretum. Patricia has been a student of well-known oil pastel artist, George Shipperly.

Patricia’s painting style is intuitive. Rarely does she do a preliminary sketch and when she does, it consists of only a few lines or blocks of color. She finds that conscious planning forms a roadblock. When painting a landscape Patricia allows the spirit of nature to soak into her being, where it waits to direct its essence thru the paint and onto the paper. It creates

it's own existence with colors flowing and melding into an agreement of the finished painting.

Her intuitive paintings have been in the LaGrange Art League for a number of years. More recently, Patricia exhibited with The Yellow House Artists, Addison Art Guild, Downers Grove Artist’s Guild and Oak Brook Art league and has received many awards.

Lynn L. Bell Lynn Bell has been creating and experimenting with design and color since childhood. She has enjoyed watercolor, printmaking, collage and drawing, and is interested in exploring the areas from realistic to stylized to abstraction.

Lynn graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Graphic Design in 1981. Since then she has been fortunate to work as a graphic designer in jobs that have allowed for creativity and lots of learning of new and changing technology.

She worked at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in the early days of the Internet. In that position she learned about Web design and became the department’s senior Web designer.

After spending ten years at UAMS Lynn moved on to Mississippi State University, working from home. Projects

included production, illustration and design of curricula for early childhood educators in Mississippi, as well as design and production of brochures and Web sites. After five years with Mississippi State she is now the graphics specialist at Metroplan, a Metropolitan Planning Organization in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Lynn has won numerous awards for graphic work and paintings, including awards in the Arkansas Arts Council’s Small Works on Paper competition and the juried Midsouthern Watercolor Society exhibition. She has illustrated children’s textbooks for well-known publishers including World Book Publishing, Macmillan, and Scott Foresman.

Sandy Den Hartog Sandy has had an interest in stones since childhood. Wherever she went, even as a young person, whether it was picnics, vacations, or field trips; she always made sure she had a cup along to collect rocks which were precious to her at the time. Once in high school she took numerous classes in gemology and geology. Then she graduated, got married, and had children. Rocks and gems had to be put on hold for a while.

However, she was still able to attend gem shows and art shows when she had the opportunity. She was looking and learning and eventually was able to travel the globe and reignite her interest in gems and minerals. She was struck by how much stones, rocks, gems, and minerals change from country to country. In bringing

back Ethiopian Crosses from Africa, she made her daughters and granddaughters necklaces with the crosses.

She was once again hooked with a creative passion for what she could now do with these artifacts.

Melvin Harris I became interested in art at an early age. I remember looking at the ‘Draw Me’ ads in comic books and various other publications.

I started by taking one of their correspondence courses. I took art classes in Junior High School and was a frequent visitor to the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City after school hours. I intensively studied Water Color and Acrylic painting, Life Drawing, Graphic Art and Design, Technical Illustration and Airbrush Photo Retouching during several decades that I lived in California. I gave no thought to ‘being in the arts’ when I was young. I find creating art to be an outlet for my thoughts and experiences.

In my work one may perceive a facet of my dream life, catch a glimpse of a thought, experience or wish that I have had during my life. I intend for every image to be not only thought provoking but also appealing to the eye. Because I spent many years as a graphic artist and illustrator, I started using a computer to complete some of my work. After a time, I began using the computer exclusively for all of my art creations.

My preferred medium of expression is digital landscape and modeling software. I use these programs to create one-of-akind images from photo-realistic landscapes to ‘other-worldly’ abstracts. Fantasy may be a term that describes one of several themes I depict. Sometimes it is a word concept and other times I may follow a more esoteric route. Surreal landscapes and scenes are ‘products’ of my dream-life.

Artists are the ‘visual journalists’ of their time. Through their work they tell the story of the world in which we find ourselves.

As an artist, I feel it is important to express, through art, my story of the world’s impact on me.

All my prints are on Somerset Velvet paper using Epson Archival inks. The prints Robins Nest, Gift Wrapped and Stained Glass will be on display at the Raw Art Space NYC March 1 - 15.

Arthur Jacob Recognition of my work has greatly expanded with participation in several solos and many juried and group exhibitions. Among them is my most recent solo exhibition at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, California and hosted by Gallery ArtLA. I have also been the recipient of several awards and have been featured in or as part of several print media articles, among them Professional Artist and Art & Beyond Magazine, that are both national print and electronic magazines. I have also recently been juried in to the winning on-line gallery hosted by Manhattan Arts International, New York, New York.

My work is a process of discovery, strongly influenced by a very strong visual sense of the world. My work offers an infinite variety of visual perceptions and interpretations for the viewer. The viewer is first told what the “real Life” image is in the title of the piece, but through abstraction and reconstruction of that image, they are then asked to undertake an adventure of discovery and challenged to explore the shapes, colors, movements and forms, which the

abstraction and reconstruction present. Colors and shapes become emotion, while form and movement become attitude. Even when a work is easily recognized there is still a predominate thread of color, movement, shape and form.

My creative process is a thoughtful and purposeful digital manipulation. Using a mouse rather than a brush to achieve a powerful medium of expression and communication, creates this style of fine art.

After leaving the work-a-day world, it was in Las Vegas that I began to discover my creative abilities and focus on the mediums of photography and digital art. In 2008 I decided to move to the Portland area where I presently reside, after a short stay in Coos Bay, Oregon. Believing that it is important to stay connected with one’s community, I have actively served on several community boards and committees, most recently, the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas and the Coos Bay Art Museum in Oregon.

Daniel R. Johnson A fascination with art started early with Daniel, but he really found his direction during his first year at Salt Lake Community College studying Graphic Design. It was then that he was introduced to the still-fledgling world of computer art.

Graduating from Brigham Young University with a BFA in Illustration, he continued working with digital art and animation. In addition to freelance illustration, he began his career in computer games, eventually moving to northern California to pursue further opportunities. Daniel was eventually hired as an onsite digital illustrator for a Sonoma county design firm, where he honed his skills through years of

commercial art for high tech, construction, infrastructure, and transportation clients. He also began teaching at colleges throughout the Bay Area, including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. To continue teaching, Daniel became an Adobe Certified Instructor in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash. He has won national awards for his digital illustration, has been interviewed in industry publications, and has given presentations where he demonstrates his techniques.

Daniel currently resides in Petaluma, California, where he works as a freelance digital artist, teacher, and author.

Keith Parks Born in Los Angeles, Keith Parks grew up in the lovely town of Oxnard, California, where his father converted an old shed in their backyard into a darkroom to "keep him off the streets" while he was in high school. Keith began college at California State University, Northridge as a photography major, but as graduation approached and he realized there were no "Help Wanted: Photographer" ads in the classified section, but plenty of entry-level graphics jobs, he switched his emphasis to graphic art in his final year. In 1980 he got his BA in Art.

That led to a 30+ year career in graphic design. In 2008, with his daughter about to depart for college, and his midlife artistic crisis in full bloom, he felt the time was right to take a stab at some purely personal artwork. He devoted a couple of years to building up a body of work, and posted the resulting images to an online artist's community, eliciting positive reviews and valuable feedback. By 2010, with his hard drive filling up with image files, he took the advice of one of his old art professors to "enter every show you can", which lead to pieces being accepted into a variety of juried exhibitions around the country (thanks to the internet). Now, in his midfifties, he's looking for his "big break".

YASMINE SAMIRY Fashioned by experience, feelings and vision Yasmine Samiry is an emerging photographer-artist the world should keep an eye on. Award winning, published and exhibited, she is drawing attention around her.

Her life has been a journey of discoveries. Granddaughter of an archeologist-photographer, she remembers in her childhood, being drawn to the technology of the camera.

She was fortunate to be surrounded by different cultures and able to see new places.

At an early age, she was experimenting with her own SLR. Photography was first a form of escaping her traditional and sheltered environment; she was often characterized as a daydreamer. Drawn to “exotic” lands, her imagination would run free.

In her adulthood she went to live and work in China and Asia, an experience that definitely changed the course of her life along with a year backpacking from Asia to America and later tour guiding in Austral-Asia.

From then on she could finally fulfill a lifelong ambition: to explore the world with her camera.

Curiosity and creativity have always been her guides; living in different cultures has been an experience that definitely enriched her life and that she loves to transmit.

Yasmine is an art sourcer, photographer and artist, graphic designer and founder of a photographers’ collective.

Yasmine will have an exhibition in London on November 30.

Max Tzinman Max Tzinman was born in Romania and lived in Israel and Canada, immersing himself in a multitude of cultures that influenced his artistic philosophy. Formerly an architect, since his move to New York City he has returned to his first love, art. He has recently participated in art and photography shows at LACDA (Los Angeles Center For Digital Art), The Center for Fine Art Photography (Ft. Collins, CO), BAG (Brooklyn Art Gallery), Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital Art Gallery, Moss Rehab/Einstein, Atlantic Gallery, MOCA (Museum of Computer Art), and the William Penn Foundation.

He explains: "I am not a photographer or a conventional painter but an image storyteller. I am not trying to freeze the moment with a beautiful image, but to transform it to reveal the disturbing emotions that are buried beneath the surface".
