Himalayan Children’s Fund News Dear Friends Torrential rains, ash oods and landslides have recently added to the challenges of daily life in Nepal. Thrangu monastery, and SMD along with many other organizations have been helping to provide essential relief. Food, water, clothing, and COVID supplies such as oxygen concentrators, medicine, masks and PPE are being delivered by helicopter since roads and trails have been destroyed. Everyone under Thrangu Rinpoche’s care is well and doing what can be done for others including prayers for the world. You can see some of the activities on page 2 With gratitude for your kind support.

NOTICE FOR SMD SPONSORS We are working hard to make sure that we con rm a student’s participation in online classes before we send your annual sponsorship renewal request. The school staff is actively collecting student data on a daily basis, but the pandemic lockdown and the extreme weather contribute to making it a long and dif cult process. Once a student is con rmed as attending, our renewal request can be made. We will not request sponsorship donations without SMD veri cation, however, general donations for SMD are always needed and welcome!
YARNE The annual 45 day summer (Yarne) retreat for monastics will begin July 24th and conclude September 6th. Established during the rainy season at the time of the Buddha, the retreat is an opportunity for monastics to stay in one place to study, engage in meditation, and train in virtuous activity of body, speech and mind. The daily schedule varies between shedra, non-shedra, and grade school age monks and nuns, but they all rise early and nish the day by 10:00 PM. (9:00 PM for the younger children.) The lunch break is an hour and a half and while the younger children do have a dinner meal the older monastics observe the vow of not eating after noon. The tradition of offering meals and other support for the activity of the nuns and monks by the lay community is seen as one of great reciprocal bene t. If you would like to make an offering, this can be done through HCF by check, or online on our website. Please designate Yarne and which branch of the monastery you want to support. (Tara Abbey, VVI, TTC or Namo Buddha.)
