Editors Letter....

Christmas is upon us whether we love it or hate it, we cant escape it! Still looking for that special gift, pop into Epworth town centre, late night shopping starts from Thursday 7th December at 7pm and continues throughout December. Go on support your local shops you will be surprised what they have to offer!

Im sure there are plenty of Christmas Fayres In the Isle this year. Advertised in the Arrow we have Crowle Christmas Fayre on December 10th.

On the same date the new market in Crowle will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland for their first Christmas Market. Make sure you are there early, the market starts at 10am. Also Epworth Christmas Market will take place in the Imperial Hall, Epworth on Friday December 2nd at 12 noon.

Again if you have young children wanting to see Father Christmas, The Smithy Museum at Owston Ferry is open from 2pm until 4pm on Saturday 3rd December and again on Sunday 4th December from 2pm until 5pm. Again please support your local museum.

Haxey Playing Fields Association are planning Christmas in the Park again this year and would welcome applications from stall traders to join our event. At the November meeting of Haxey W.I. Mr. Norman Britton, a former teacher, had members nearly falling off their seats with laughter when he recalled with actions amusing incidents of his teaching career. Despite this frivolity it was obvious that he had his pupils welfare at heart.

The Haxey Methodist Autumn Fayre raised a tremendous £1265 on Saturday November 5th. I was due to open the fayre, which I was looking forward to. Sadly I was unable to attend due to Shingles! I am glad the event was successful and everyone had a lovely afternoon.

Owston Ferry WI will be holding their Christmas meeting on Wednesday 21st December at 7.30pm in the Coronation Hall. Entertainment for the evening will be by 3 in Harmony followed by Christmas themed refreshments. Visitors are very welcome. The fee for non WI Members is ÂŁ2.50.

St. Martin's Church, Owston Ferry Sunday 18th December there will be a Carol Service at 4pm Saturday, 24th December at 6pm the Crib Service will be held Sunday, 25th December Christmas Day Service will be at 10am.

Saturday, 3rd December the Owston Ferry Christmas Tree and Lights will be turned on at 7pm. Father Christmas will be in the Market Square at Owston Ferry to meet the children and take their letters so he knows what to bring them for Christmas. Refreshments will be available and all are welcome to come along and join in the Carol singing.

Friday, 2nd December, Santa will be arriving at the Smithy Museum on the High Street, Owston Ferry at 6pm. He will be in his cottage ready to meet children until 8pm that evening. He will be opening his cottage from 2pm until 4pm on Saturday 3rd December, and again on Sunday 4th December from 2pm until 5pm. There will also be refreshments available in the Forge where you can keep warm by the fire as well as taking part in the raffle and tombola and buy those last minute Christmas presents from the gift stall. If you cannot make those dates, Santa will be opening his cottage again to meet children on Sunday 11th December from 2pm until 6pm. Entrance is ÂŁ2.50 for each child who will receive a gift from Santa.

AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE NEWS Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-social behaviour, off road bikes.

Calls for service to these areas have seen an increase recently and centres in and around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others.

The calls include reports of theft, burglary, suspicious persons with dog, criminal damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. UPDATE; There has been a decrease in calls for service, however there is still reports being received including suspicious males and vans being seen in remote locations with the intention of stealing metal, so anyone seeing anyone acting suspiciously please ring it in immediately. It is far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police areas as they too are suffering similar offences and it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of them finding metal to steal or males and vehicles being on land with the intention of hare coursing. In one weekend a total of 8 males were reported for daytime poaching and summonses to be issued. Countrywatch is a group of landowners, farmers and other land users who meet quarterly to discuss pertinent issues. We have now launched the Countrywatch membership scheme which is open to all farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members which can be a priority concern of theirs, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Anyone wishing to join please contact PC 1839 Starbuck for further information and an application form. We have now also got members joining from just outside the Humberside Police area and we encourage everyone to promote the scheme and new members are always welcome. Historically this period of the year inevitably brings increased calls for service to not only the police but also other partner agencies including the fire service. Reports during the period 30 th October and 6th November can become quite problematic including reports of anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, public order offences and other environmental issues from bonfires and fireworks. This impacts on the calls for services for both police and Humberside Fire and Rescue, but we would encourage anyone affected to ring in and report matters at the time to the police on 0845 60 60 222, but if considered an emergency then 999 for police of Fire. Anti-social behaviour and crime and disorder can cause significant problems for a community and we would encourage the co-operation of parents to ensure their children are safe and behave in a considerate manner particularly at this time of the year.

Recent Issues Countrywatch update = 8 males over one weekend were summonsed for poaching offences after calls were received about suspicious males on farmland with dogs. Each was found to be trespassing with dogs and will be summonsed to explain their actions to a magistrate. This highlights to importance of the Country Watch Scheme and how we can work in partnership with local farmers to tackle the issues surrounding hare coursing.

Cable theft arrests = Officers on night patrol came across a vehicle with cable trailing behind it. The vehicle failed to stop for officers who continued the pursuit. It ended up driving into the South Yorkshire area and after some assistance from the police helicopter was stopped. Four males have been arrested and bailed pending enquiries.

Haxey Cricket Club’s Fantastic Year 2011 proved to be an exciting and extremely successful year for the club, who ended the season in first place of the Lincolnshire Premier league, making Haxey CC the premier club in the whole of North Lincolnshire. Next season they will be playing in the Lincolnshire ECB Premier league, the highest level to which any club side can aspire. Indeed, they will be the only village club in the league, others being Skegness, Grimsby, Louth, Stamford and the like..

Their success was very much a team effort, lead by skipper Mark Atkins, who came fourth in the league bowling averages, taking 37 wickets at less than 13 runs per wicket.. Graeme Attenborough, pictured in the middle of the photograph top left, was a fine signing from Doncaster Town, scoring 614 runs at an average of 38 and taking 35 wickets a 10.74, thus coming second in the league averages. Top scoring batsman was Ian Leach, pictured top right, who scored 516 runs at an average of 57.33. This made him the winner of the league batting averages, achieved even though he only started 55% of the matches. He missed some games because he was picked to play for England in the Indoor World Cup in South Africa, where he was the second highest scorer in the tournament..

We should not fail to mention that newly signed, Dale Coy, won the prestigious league wicketkeeping award, amassing 42 dismissals, of which 31 victims were caught and 11 were stumped. Other batsmen, who had a fine season were Oliver Tonks, Tom Wraith and Nick Bisby. The other successful bowlers included Tom Scott and juniors Aaron Moody, Joe Scott and Damon Hughes, all of whom came through the club‘s junior section. Whilst mentioning the junior section, indoor nets are continuing throughout the winter months (see picture below) on Saturday afternoon for the under 11s, 13s and 15s and anyone interested in joining in should contact Peter Drew on 753400 during office hours. Equally, if anyone thinks they are good enough to play at ECB league level, or would just like a game of cricket, please ring Don Lange on 752394.

The facilities at the club are the best in the Isle and the square is the envy of many visiting teams.

However, our Groundsman, Ken Layton, regrettably feels that it’s time to call it a day and we would be very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with the upkeep of the playing area (the square). If you are at all interested in keeping our village team playing on an excellent wicket, please ring Don Lange on 752394.

Wroot Travis School News Before half term a gentleman named Dave Allison rang from London where he lives. His mother had died and, looking through her things, he found an envelope labelled ―My Life in Wroot‖. The envelope contained photos of his mother as a child and as a young woman. His mother‘s maiden name was Ethel May Young and she was born in 1921 attended school in Wroot and married in Finningly in 1945 before moving to London.

Mr Allison sent us copies of the pictures and our school building was recognisable from the group photos. We took our children to the same place and took a photo of them which we sent to Mr Allison with a copy of the old register with his mother‘s name and the dates she started and left school. She was 14 years old when she left school.

Mr Allison wrote back to us and was thrilled to have the photo of our children pictured at the same place as his mother had been. It appears that Mr Allison works in a museum as he sent us a picture of a dinosaur which is a new addition to their collection. As you can see the dinosaur is holding the picture of our children and has a hat with a label that says I

They had been calling him Big Al as he was an Allosaurus but there is already a famous Big Al in America who starred in his own documentary ―The ballad of Big Al‖ Mr Allison said he may call his dinosaur Travis. The children were delighted. Mr Allison also sent us a piece of dinosaur egg which is 120 million years old. You can imagine how impressed we were with that.

Mr Allison also told us some of the stories his mother had told him of her childhood of the day some big world war 2 bombers first came into Finningley and her friend Cathy Barlow ran up and down the road shouting ―Look, look they‘re settling‖ and of the day when a world war 2 bomber struggled over Wroot and Blaxton with engines on fire just missing the rooftops and eventually crash landing at Finningley.

Mr Allison may come to visit us next year and we are looking forward to hearing more about his mother‘s life in Wroot and about the dinosaurs in his collection.

This Christmastime many of us will hear the familiar words of John’s Gospel referring to Jesus: The Word became flesh and dwelt among us ....... in him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. God makes his home within believers and, through faith, the darkness and places of pain or suffering or failure in our lives can be changed and filled with hope. How? Because God came amongst us in the person of Jesus, so he understands what it's like to be in our shoes, he is not distant but very near. That is one of the amazing results of the first Christmas.

Similarly, the Wise Men help us to understand our own journey of faith, and to cope with the fact that such a faith-journey can have lots of twists and turns, and occasionally the odd dead end or temptation to turn back. But God is always willing to find us again when we lose our way, and fortunately he never gives up on us, even though we often seem to have a natural inclination to wander away from him.

God's invitation is wide open - but we still have to ask him to make his home in us. The trouble is, as an old French proverb puts it, God often visits us, but most of the time we are not at home. I hope that won't be true for any of us this Christmas.

HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY MEMBERS MEETING - 10TH. NOVEMBER At the opening of the November meeting of the Heritage Society members were invited to contribute part of their evenings attendance fee to the British Legion Poppy Appeal this was agreed unanimously and raised the sum of £36.

Continuing the meeting details of the forthcoming Coffee morning to be held in the Haxey Church Hall on Saturday 19th. of November were given, all of the Society‘s publications and video would be reduced, items suitable for Christmas gifts, a book stall, a cake stall and a raffle along with hot mince pies served would make this an event to enjoy.

Invitations to the Christmas party were handed out which this year included the opportunity for members to invite their own guest to the party.

The chairman then welcomed the return of the Leader brothers to the Society with their presentation of ‗Yet another Box‘ a melange of mysterious items which members were invited to identify and describe their use. Typical amongst the articles demonstrated was a square cup like pressed glass object which had been made in a cast iron mould ( a technique invented in Newcastle) these objects came in various colours were used in sets of 4 or 6 in the home during Victorian times and over time their purpose became reversed.

This will be identified in our next report as readers might wish to guess what the item could be.

Throughout the presentation another nine items were displayed and discussed with the majority of these eventually being identified by the members.

Giving the vote of thanks for an entertaining evening Mrs Sylvia Hook recalled some other half forgotten artefacts.

The meeting then closed with refreshments served.

The next meeting will be the Christmas party to be held in the Westwoodside Village Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday December 8th.

AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY (continued from last month) The artificial warping of the land is a fairly modern innovation. It is limited in extent; mainly to the areas near to the tidal reaches of the Trent, Ouse and Don rivers. It was also carried out in the Val di Chiana in Italy. The word warping may possibly, come from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Weorpan’ meaning to turn aside.

The first artificial warping appears to have taken place at Rawcliffe on the Humber by a man called Barker between 1730 and 1740. His work was continued by Richard Jennings of Howden. The practice soon spread to the Isle of Axholme.

Land suitable for artificial warping must fulfil certain conditions. The land must be above the low water line of the river; otherwise once flooded the water will not naturally flow off. The land must be below the water level line; otherwise the water will not reach the land. The river obviously must be tidal. A great difference between high and low water makes a river particularly suitable.

The method of artificial warping was as follows. The land to be warped (usually 400 to 500 acres at a time) had to be linked to the river. In the isle, this was either the Trent or the Ouse. The drain needed to be about 50 feet wide. The bottom of the drain needed to be at the low level of the river.

A sluice was built at the entrance to the river to control the flow of water. The whole area to be warped had to be embanked. From the drain must be dug minor ‘cuts’ out across the land in a dentritic pattern. When all was ready for the flooding the sluices were opened at low tide and as the tide rose so the silty water rushed up the drain and spread itself evenly over the embanked fields. As the tide ebbed, the water retreated and left behind a layer of silt about one eighth of an inch thick.

This process was carried out twice a day spring and summer. The small tides were not utilised. The winter tides were disregarded because they contained too much fresh water. A dry summer with little fresh water in the river produced the best warping. The warp is in layers. With each warping the heavier sand particles settled first to form a thin layer then the lighter clay particles settled to form a layer. The process took about three years to produce three feet of warp soil. This land is called ‘New Warp Land’. Throughout the process the developers had to satisfy the Court of Sewers. The early attempts at warping usually undertook only 60 or 70 acres and managed without sluices at river entrances.

The enclosure Act of 1795 allowed for some warping to be undertaken in the parishes of Haxey, Epworth, Owston Ferry and Belton. The Enclosure Act of 1813 did like wise for Crowle parish.

The cost of warping depended upon the individual conditions. The average cost during the 19 th century would be approximately £20.00 an acre that included the cost of the drains, the sluice, the floodgates, banking, rent of the land during warping and other expenses. The sluice gate was a very costly item- as high as £2,500. The cost of warping was very much reduced by the constructing of public warping drains at the time of enclosure. The names of these can be seen on Ordnance Survey Map (two and half inches to a mile). Anyone with land adjoining the drains was allowed to cut a channel to link up with the drains. By this method, the cost was reduced by two guineas (21/- 20/equalling one pound) an acre. In 1854 a private company bought Snow Sewer for £5,000 and charged the fee of £21.00 an acre for warping land adjoining it. In 1861 the fee was increased to 25 guineas.

Cart warping was also practised, that is spreading warp soil on existing land by hand. Usually one needed about 400 loads an acre. The charge for carting this warp soil was 0.5 pence per load per mile. Sometimes trams on specially laid tramways were used. Cart warping, however was a smallscale operation.

Before 1800 only about 1,500 acres of land had been warped. By 1850 practically all land within 3 miles of the River Trent had been successfully warped. No artificial warping has taken place since 1912.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Allan Rowsell will be entertaining us at our December meeting with photographs taken on his visits to California. Allan is a well known local photographer so, with his many wonderful images accompanied by music and tales of his travels, means we are in for a treat. This will take place on Thursday December 1st at 7.30pm. As this is our Christmas meeting there will be Christmas cards on sale and there will be seasonal refreshments.

There will be a work party on Sunday December 4th at 10am. The venue has yet to be finalised but this will be confirmed at the December meeting or you can ring Geoff for details. There are going to be work parties on the first Sunday of the month during the winter.

Our January meeting will be on Thursday January 5th when we have our annual slide and digital evening. This is always a popular meeting when various members show us a short selection of photographs on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history. If you have some photographs to share with everyone please let Geoff or any committee member know before the evening and then the programme and equipment can be organised. You don‘t have to be a brilliant photographer, we just like to have lots of people sharing their interests with us.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Westwoodside Playing Field Wins Award Westwoodside Playing Field has won a top award in the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Best Kept Village competition judged across the whole of North Lincolnshire.

Whilst Westwoodside picked up the award for the Best Kept Play Area, Belton also won the award for the Best Kept Large Village.

Over recent years, the playing field, off Akeferry Road, has undergone a complete transformation with almost £200,000 of investment in a new play area and a floodlit multiuse games area (MUGA). The transformation was mainly funded by the Big Lottery but was also heavily supported by Haxey Parish Council (and ultimately the parishioners). HPC not only provided grants to help secure the main funding but also provide ongoing financial assistance to the playing field the form of an annual maintenance grant.

Richard Carter, chairman of the playing field association was delighted with the award and said, ―This is the result of a lot of hard work both by the PFA committee and the people who use the playing field, helping to keep the area as clean and tidy as possible.‖ He went on to say that he had done a number of surveys for North Lincolnshire Council and, ―People say it is really nice now to have somewhere to take the kids after school‖ and ―Before the improvements, people only went down occasionally but now there is much more there and some say it is the best play area on the Isle and travel quite a long way to use it‘.

Haxey Parish Council chairman, David Knowles said, ―I would like to thank WPFA for all the tremendous hard work they‘ve put in over the years, these are superb facilities and I often bring my grandson down here.‖ In addition to the award, Fenland Leisure, the sponsors will provide the winners with a free piece of children‘s play equipment, so there will be even more to attract people down to the field.

Haxey Church of England Primary School We have had a very successful start to the new academic year. All the new children have settled in very well and have quickly got into the routine of school life.

Our harvest festival at St. Nicholas Church went well and congratulations to everyone who took part. All the food collected went to senior citizens in the parish and the collection of just under ÂŁ120 went to Save the Children.

A sponsored walk from the school to Epworth via High Burnham and back along the railway nature path raised ÂŁ1400. Half is being used to buy books for the school and the rest is being given to PHASE a charity we support and have connections with that works in Nepal.

We have held a photograph competition for all pupils. It was split into three categories, People, animals and general, with KS1 and KS2 being judged separately. And the winners of each category entered for the overall prize. The standard was very high and judging was extremely difficult, thank you to the judges for their time and making difficult decisions, as everyone deserved a prize. In KS1 Maisie Thompson won the animal section, Charlotte Smith won the People section and Logan Llewellyn won the general section.

In KS2 Robyn Burdett won the animal section, Emily Young won the people section and Joseph Hanson won the general section. They all received a mug with their picture printed on it. Robyn Burdett

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School As usual, both schools have been very busy….. St Martin‘s classrooms have recently been transformed through our staff focus on ‗vibrant learning environments‘. We now have an Egyptian Mummy in Class 4, a rocket flying through space in Class 2, a horse and chariot in Class 3 and another rocket being launched overhead in Class 1. Furthermore, Years 5 and 6 pupils have been challenged to decipher an Egyptian curse using actual hieroglyphs, so they are becoming mini-experts on all things Egyptian!

St Martin‘s School Council has been very proactive in seeking views from the school community in connection with ‗litter in the locale‘. Litter surveys were returned with them being entered in to a prize draw. Charlotte Thornton was the lucky winner and won a box of Heroes chocolates! Having then analysed the litter surveys, School Councillors summarised that the vast majority suggest ‗more bins in more obvious locations‘ as well as ‗producing guidance for children and parents in order to raise awareness of litter and bins available‘. The vast majority believe that the Recreation Ground is not littered (good news) although the disposal of chewing gum needs to be addressed. This information is now going to be shared with Owston Ferry Parish Council and there is a competition in the pipeline to create a sculpture out of ‗recycled rubbish‘! St Martin‘s school has also being invited by Owston Ferry Sports Club to design a logo that will feature on their sign in the village – we look forward to seeing the results of this.

Indeed, Community links are going well for both schools at the moment……

The School Council at West Butterwick was very pleased to be presented with a cheque for £500 following a successful Grant application made to West Butterwick Parish Council during the Summer Holidays. The money has been awarded to our school in the Parish Council's support of local projects and will be used to buy resources for the new learning room extension at West Butterwick school.

Local Councillor Miss Jackie Shadlock came in to present our School Councillors with this £500 cheque. The School Council thanked the Parish Council and also requested that they might meet up soon with the Parish Councillors to ask questions about their role in serving the community. It is wonderful to feel supported by our local community and we are really grateful for their generous grant allocation as this will help us to finish our new learning room extension off to a high standard.

We are also looking forward to showing the Parish Councillors around our school in the near future and learning more about their valuable voluntary role in our local community.

West Butterwick School has also been very busy building global education links with Chandeshowri School in Nepal.

This school link was established through West Butterwick residents Gary and Jill Allen who have spent time trekking in Nepal and have visited the school, which is situated on a mountain side.

At first the school had no roof and no water. However, through steady fundraising Mr and Mrs Allen have raised enough money to buy the school a water tank and a roof and also to improve the toilet facilities. West Butterwick school has now established a 'twinning relationship' with Chandeshowri and all of our pupils have learnt about the area the school is situated in and a little bit about the culture of the families who live in the school's village.

The main religion is Hindu and West Butterwick children are looking forward to establishing 'pen friends' and hopefully communicating by webcam at some point in the near future. This is a great step forward for our school in terms of bringing an awareness of 'Global Education' to our children here in West Butterwick.

It is not about the 'haves and have-nots', it is about the different cultural and educational experiences of children who live in the various parts of our world.

We are grateful to Mr and Mrs Allen for introducing Chandeshowri Primary School to us here in West Butterwick. Mr and Mrs Allen came in to deliver an inspiring powerpoint presentation based on their visits to Nepal, with some amazing and thought-provoking photos of how education is delivered in other parts of the world.

Westwoodside Church of England School News Building a Strengths Based School ‗Celebrating Strengths‘ is when staff and pupils use storytelling, celebrating festivals and noticing and building on children‘s strengths to develop a flourishing school community.

A few weeks ago we were delighted to welcome Belinda Catt a ‗Celebrating Strengths‘ consultant to lead a special assembly and to celebrate an Advent Spiral Festival with Year 4 pupils. Belinda will continue to work with us this coming year to develop the philosophy of ‗Celebrating Strengths‘. The activities, stories and celebrations complement the existing curriculum and ethos of our school. They will encourage the children to foster a love of learning, build strengths of character and encourage them to take time for reflection.

On Monday, 7th November a large audience enthusiastically welcomed Andrew Mason, an Area Demonstrator, to the Christmas meeting in the Memorial Hall in Haxey. Included in the audience were several loyal supporters from St Lawrence‘s Scunthorpe Flower Club, who in turn invited visitors to their Christmas Demonstration on Monday, 28th November. Andrew introduced his completely new demonstration, ―never previously seen‖ entitled ―Dreaming of a White Christmas‖, beginning with a door garland into which he put a variety of greenery, silver apples ―so that the paperboy didn‘t pinch them‖ and white roses, completing the tasteful wreath with a large silvery white bow of ribbon ―tied on securely‖.

Andrew continued his demonstration using large basket containers, an enormous, gnarled piece if tree, a very tall glass vase and finally some large pieces of bamboo creating a structure onto which he attached containers of oasis to hold the arrangements. He also surprised the audience when he revealed dangling baubles, stars and fairy lights hanging beneath a pedestal arrangement to add glitz and glamour.

Throughout the evening Andrew carefully used a variety of foliage, different white chrysanthemums, lilies of different sizes and combinations, carnations, gerbera, roses and lisianthus. He kept his audience entertained with little anecdotes and all of the time he gave helpful suggestions such as ensuring that sprayed leaves should be sprayed only on one side, putting groups of one type of flower together and remembering about balance and proportion. At the end of the demonstration Andrew was thanked by Carolyn Drury before approximately a dozen lucky people claimed a raffle prize.

To conclude a lovely evening all in attendance were invited to enjoy the arrangements, a cup of tea or coffee and delicious homemade refreshments provided by the committee.

The next event for the Flower Club members will be the outing to Doddington Hall near Lincoln on Saturday, 10th December meeting in the car park there at 10.30.a.m. In the New Year the members will celebrate with a meal at the Reindeer Inn at Sandtoft on Monday 9 th January 2012.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist How to avoid a frosty welcome A very Merry Christmas to all our readers Weather conditions will be turning frosty, leaving motorists searching for their ice scrapers. The following is for drivers seeking to avoid a frosty welcome: Prepare the vehicle for winter early. Have the anti freeze checked, replace damaged wiper blades, stock up on de-icer, add a frost inhibitor to the screen wash and buy a window scraper and two cloths: one to clear condensation and dirt from the inside windows and one to clean lights and exterior windows. Check that the windscreen wipers are off when leaving the vehicle the night before to avoid damaging the wiper motor and blades when the engine is started the next day. Use external temperature gauges, if the vehicle has them. An indicated temperature of 3°C means that extremely slippery conditions are possible.

Remember that ice on the windscreen could mean ice on the carriageway at some points, especially side roads. Observe other road users reactions to conditions ahead as a pre-warning of what is to come Stopping distances will increase in frosty or wet weather. Stay focused, look further ahead than usual and allow for the extra time needed to stop by increasing the gap ahead. Where the road surface is likely to be slippery, stay in the highest gear possible to minimise the risk of wheel spin. Consider setting off in second gear, releasing the clutch and accelerating very gently.

If the vehicles front end begins to lose grip, a front wheel skid will begin. Reduce acceleration, consider disengaging the clutch and steer smoothly. If the vehicle goes into a rear wheel skid, lift off the accelerator, consider de-clutching and steer into the skid. Always ensure windows, lights and mirrors are clear of dirt and ice before setting off.
