The Arrow team has had an exciting month! The new advertisers and positive feedback are always great to hear—it must feel rewarding to see things moving forward. With Easter around the corner, it seems like there's plenty of fun stuff happening. Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Boston Park hosting their yearly events sounds like a fantastic way to enjoy the holiday. Baby animals always bring such joy!

The May issue deadline for adverts and content is 11th April. The Arrow will be delivered by the 30th April.

There’s more to Florida than Disney – Wildlife of Florida Thursday April 3rd 2025 at 7.30pm

On Thursday April 3rd 2025 at 7.30pm the local wildlife trust group will be having a brief AGM followed by a talk on the wildlife of Florida by Matthew Capper. There is an amazing amount of wildlife in Florida and Matthew has guided wildlife holidays there. Do come along and join us

Epworth Dementia Steering

Group. Epworth is striving to be a Dementia Friendly Community, welcoming all.

If you or someone you café for have problems with memory, or dementia, or are lonely and isolated, enjoy a good sing, come and join Just Sing at Epworth Thurlow on 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Between 1.30 and 2.30 followed by tea/ coffee and biscuits.

There are also Reminiscence Sessions held at the Old Rectory, Epworth. Drop in between 1 and 3pm on Wednesday March 12th and Wednesday 9th April. Refreshments provided. If you have any suggestions for what activities the community needs please let us know by calling 07526 090162.

Crowle & District WI meeting on Thursday 3rd April 2025 is by Eleanor Rogerson Demonstrating Copper Bowl making. She will take us through the process of making Copper bowls and talk to us about her jewelry making and bring items to sell.. The venue is Crowle Community Hall, Woodland Avenue, Crowle DN17 4LL and starts at 7pm. We also hold a Welfare monthly for members who just want a chat or are feeling a bit lonely and want a cuppa and chat at Joy's house and we have a members sub group, Crafty Bees, which members can join for a small fee. Please come along to any of our main meetings, you will be made very welcome. in Epworth is having an ‘open afternoon’ for those interested in joining our group or just interested in hearing what we do.

We play a mix of instruments, mainly woodwind and cater for adult beginner level through to more advanced.

Isle of Axholme News

In November, Epworth & District Flower Club hosted our eagerly anticipated Open Meeting with Demonstrator Mark Entwistle at South Axholme Academy, Epworth. Mark wowed us with his spectacular 'Snow Storm' demonstration, featuring arrangements with exquisite orchids, vibrant roses, and elegant lilies. We were thrilled by the fantastic turnout and deeply grateful for the incredible support we received. Our chosen charity for the evening was Weston Park Cancer Charity, which provides vital support and care to cancer patients. We were overjoyed to present Weston Park Cancer Charity with a cheque for £1,800.00, in addition to their sales table on the evening that raised £253.00. The £1,800.00 cheque and £253.00 from the sales table will significantly contribute to their ongoing efforts. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this wonderful event.

February and March have seen lots of investitures - scouts moving up to senior scouts, cubs joining, and lots of beavers making their promises for the first time. We also had a wonderful Founder’s Day parade in Haxey with all 4 sections on display. The youngsters looked very smart and were a credit to our troop. Scouts have been building up their First Aid skills recently, working on sprains and strains, burns and bandaging, and finally recovery position and lifesaving. Although most of them have completed their junior First Aid badge, it is great to be constantly refreshing these skills. They have also been planning hiking routes and menus for their weekend away to North Yorkshire. Cubs have been working hard on their knots, games and crafts, and are also working on their crime prevention badge. So far, the police have visited, and we have discussed respect, vandalism, and stranger danger. Next, we are hoping for neighbourhood watch visitors. Beavers have been learning about the Union flag, and crafting their own finger-painted flags. Their new mascot “Goofy the beaver” has begun his weekly trips home with the “star beaver of the week”. The beavers are enjoying hearing about what adventures Goofy gets up to each week when he comes back! Senior scouts have been planning their Adventure pursuit badge where they work towards competence in 9 different sports and hobbies. Anyone for gliding and climbing? Some of the seniors are preparing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions and residentials too, in amongst revising for various school exams. Now that spring is here we are starting to plan camps too. Scouts and Seniors are off the Summerbridge this month where we hike to Brimham rocks, and develop our indoor cooking skills. We will also we swimming, doing air rifle shooting and archery. Photos to follow! Cubs will be having a sleepover shortly too, and we are all planning ahead for our full troop summer camp for all 4 sections.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: Monday (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting at 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Tuesday evening at 6pm (Beavers).

International Women’s Day at Peak Physique Gym, Epworth

Jodie Grant hosted a fantastic International Women’s Day event at the gym! The combination of educational workshops, challenges, and community-building activities made it an empowering experience for all the ladies involved. It was amazing to see so many new faces, as well as Jodie’s clients join the gym to celebrate the day and get inspired by the strength training session.

Boston Park Farm Announces Rare Birth of Quadruplet Lambs –First in 25 Years!

Boston Park Farm is thrilled to announce the rare and extraordinary birth of quadruplet lambs, a remarkable event that has not occurred on the farm in over 25 years. This highly unusual occurrence has captured the attention of both the farming community and animal lovers alike, as quadruplet lamb births are an exceedingly rare phenomenon.

The Suffolk X ewe named Stripe due to her unusual markings, gave birth to four healthy lambs in the early hours of February 27th, 2025. Each lamb is thriving, and both mother and babies are being carefully monitored by the farm's experienced team to ensure their continued health and well-being. "I went out to check the ewes and could see that Stripe had started in labour. She had been scanned in December and this showed she was pregnant with 3 lambs, so we knew she might need a bit of help. It's soon became obvious that she was struggling to progress so I had to give her a bit of help and managed to deliver 3 healthy lambs. She was then left to bond and when we returned an hour later to check on her we found she had given birth to another lamb! To have quadruplet lambs born on our farm is an extraordinary event, one that we haven't witnessed in over two decades. It’s a rare and joyful moment for us, and we are delighted to share this special news with the community," said David Chappell, owner at Boston Park Farm. "All of the lambs are healthy, and Stripe is doing an excellent job caring for them. We're looking forward to watching these little ones grow."

Quadruplet births in sheep are so rare that they occur in fewer than 1 in 500 births, with the odds doubling if all lambs survive. While twins are more common, and triplets are occasionally seen, quadruplets are an extremely rare occurrence in the farming world. This miracle of nature is a testament to the quality care and dedication of the team at Boston Park Farm, who work tirelessly to ensure the health of all their animals.

Epworth Open Gardens 2025: We need your garden!

We were overwhelmed by the response to the Open Gardens event last year. An incredible £3600 (for Lindsey Lodge and St Andrew’s church) was raised by hundreds of visitors from far and wide, as well as those local to the Isle. The atmosphere at the event was uplifting and enjoyable. Along with beautiful gardens, there was entertainment with live music, plant stalls, games and activities plus refreshments and homemade cakes.

One of my favourite stories came from two elderly ladies who were quite new to the area and joyfully informed me as they left, not only of how much they had enjoyed the gardens but also that they had made new friends with people they kept bumping into as they visited each site. The event had the love of gardens at its heart and whilst raising funds for two worthy causes was important, so too was the sense of community engendering generosity and friendship

Building on the success of last year’s event, we are looking to host the Epworth Open Gardens in 2025. Many of the gardeners have kindly offered their wonderful plots again which is greatly appreciated. We would like to add to this number and are therefore looking to recruit a variety of gardens, veggie plots or open spaces in Epworth.
