Aloha Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i `Ohana,
As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the unwavering commitment and dedication that defines us. Rootedinstrengthandgroundedin`ohana , Armed Services YMCA Hawaii’s journey over the past 107 years, from the day we opened our doors in November 1917 to today, has been a testament to the indomitable spirit that unites us all. Thanks to you, in a world where change is constant, we have stood resolute in our commitment to thriving together.
The family on the cover of this year’s report was photographed in a joyful moment at our annual Military Children’s Ball, hosted by the Wheeler Army Airfield Branch. The theme was “Hollywood” and hoss elections were a part of the festivities. Little man won “Best Outfit”, but we can’t tell who’s more thrilled - him or his parents! Family resiliency events and moments like this remind us why Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i continues endeavoring on our mission to enhance the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind, and body, through programs relevant to the challenges of military life.
2023 and the past few years have tested our resolve. The world environment has changed, the adversary has become emboldened, and our armed forces continue to rise to the challenge. Nothing got easier. The devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui shook the entire state of Hawai`i but amidst mourning the losses and injuries of hundreds of neighbors and loved ones, we banded together. Locals organized food and fund drives for Maui residents, and Armed Services YMCA rallied for service men, women, and families affected by the fire. We immediately gathered goods and shipped them to Maui for frontline support. Our rapid action led to military leaders designating Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i as the official support organization for all things related to the Maui wildfire. We identified military families who lost homes and were tragically affected, and with the help of our donors, within three weeks, sent over $79,000 in direct financial support to Coast Guard and National Guard families who lost everything.
Our ability to deliver support programs for military families is not just a lofty goal. It’s our everyday operational tempo and as things change, so will we. This annual report outlines the many changes that took us to new heights in 2023. Please enjoy reading and mahalo nui loa for the vital role you play in Strengthening Our Military `Ohana.

It gives us great joy to provide these services. It’s the least we can do for their daily choice to put on the uniform and serve our great nation.
EVENTS
Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i joyfully reinstated social gatherings in 2023 with the first Father Daughter Dance in three years at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Branch’s “Enchated Garden” dance in February, followed by the Marine Corps Base Hawai`i Branch’s “Magical Princess Night” dance in June, and the Wheeler Army Airfield Branch’s “Here Comes Hollywood” Military Children’s Ball in October. 700 military fathers, daughters, moms, and sons dusted off their dancing shoes, donned their fancy pants and dresses, and boogied into the night with us in 2023.

Armed Services YMCA Hawaii’s Kokua Connection program welcomes military families to embrace “living aloha” through cultural exchange and community engagement. Kokua Connections was initially created to brace and bolster military family mental health during the first days of the Red Hill water crisis. “Community Conversation” gatherings including mental health professionals and families affected by the water crisis evolved into joint community service days and “field trip” like get-togethers to listen, learn, and cultivate a deeper understanding of Native Hawaiian history, culture, and island living. Due to astounding participation, support, and growing interest, we look forward to exploring ways and means to continue bridging military, local, and kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian) communities throughout the state.
