2021 ANNUAL REPORT STRENGTHENING OUR MILITARY `OHANA SINCE 1917

LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS

A message from Lt Gen Dan “Fig” Leaf, USAF (Ret.), Board of Management Chairman and Laurie Moore, Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i Executive Director.

OUR MISSION The Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i enhances the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind, and body through programs relevant to the unique challenges of military life. Cover image from left to right - Petty Officer 3 Elicia Robinson, Petty Officer 1 Ericka Bernardino, and Petty Officer 1 Corey Holmes from the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Pearl Harbor (NMRTC-PH) picking up Operation Holiday Joy packages to ensure all families in their unit have access to a delicious holiday meal. We’d love to hear from you! If you have any questions, comments, or would like to volunteer or donate, contact us by calling (808) 473-3398 or email OutreachDirector@asymcahi.org. Our mailing address is 1260 Pierce Street, Suite 145; Pearl Harbor, HI 96860. Please visit www.ASYMCAHI.org for more information about Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i.

Aloha Friends of the Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i, What a blessing to be here, looking back on a year that despite social distancing mandates and unexpected challenges, was also a year that provided opportunities for deepened connections and service to others. As the world reopened and attempted to return to a semblance of the way things were, Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) relentlessly focused our passion and creativity to address the most pressing needs of our nation’s warriors and their families. The ever-evolving pandemic and other significant challenges both globally and locally this last year have really tested our military community however, with your help, ASYMCA is boldly undertaking the mission to strengthen families and grow their resilience. Operation Hero got a fresh start during the Spring 2021 semester, welcoming elementary-aged military children eager to gather in-person after a year of virtual interactions. Our Food for Families program provided steadfast assistance through its Food Pantry and `Ohana Food Drop services, which saw a significant increase in distribution during the first quarter of the year. By the end of the year, Youth Development programs saw a 105 percent increase in new participants, and new enrollments at Children’s Waiting Room, a Family Resiliency program, doubled. ASYMCA’s ability to persevere is built on our foundation of 105 years in service to others. It is you our stakeholders, donors, and supporters whose dedication, compassion, and commitment make our work possible. Because of your partnership, we amplified our mission and are equipped to do what we’ve always done - step in to eagerly address the challenges of the day. Please enjoy this year’s annual report. Military life is tough. In this report, you will see how your generous support impacts military families and helps them thrive. Mahalo for your aloha and kokua in Strengthening Our Military `Ohana. On behalf of those we serve,

Lt Gen Dan “Fig” Leaf, USAF (Ret.) Chairman, Board of Management

Laurie Moore Executive Director

FAMILY RESILIENCY

“Just as our troops embody the courage and character that make America’s military the finest in the world, their family members embody the resilience and generosity that make our communities strong. They serve with heroism in their homes and neighborhoods while they are without the comfort of having loved ones nearby.”

- Barack Obama, 44th U.S. President

The power and strength of our military is about its people. They serve and defend our nation and inspire each of us. We are stronger together. It is our responsibility to provide for them and their families as they go about the work of our nation. As State of Hawaii gathering restrictions began to loosen in early 2021, Armed Services YMCA Family Resiliency programs helped military families reconnect. We sign-waved, passed out flowers to military spouses, hosted fun events for single service members, and gifted 50 laptops during April and May - Month of the Military Child and Military Appreciation Month respectively. Laptop recipients created Zoom family reunions, presented science projects in their virtual classrooms, and turned 2020s mishaps into 2021s memorable moments. Our Emergency Financial Assistance program saw an increase in requests from active duty and veteran families in need. ASYMCA Hawai`i provided temporary lodging, care packages with household and toiletry items, and funding to pay for unexpected expenses including flights home to see ill family members, clothing, COVID-19 PCR tests, and much more. We also saw a tremendous increase in need during the holidays with Operation Holiday Joy, Santa Boots, and especially Operation Ride Home. Thanks to generous donations from community organizations like the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council, Kaneohe Bay MCBH Commissary, Marine Toys for Tots, Restaurant 604, and Lendlease’s Island Palms and Hickam Communities, we distributed 1,747 holiday baskets filled with fixings for a delicious holiday meal, gifted close to $10,000 worth of toys and household goods to military families, and sent 300 junior enlisted service members home for the holidays.

“A child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him.”

- Pablo Casals, Spanish and Puerto Rican cellist, composer, and conductor

Armed Services YMCA’s Youth Development and Early Education programs include a spectrum of services for the youngest members of our military `ohana. Playmorning, Early Learning Readiness (ELR), Parent Participation Preschool (PPP), Operation Hero, Enrichment Programs during Spring, Summer, and Fall Break, and Robotics Camp welcomed 4,510 new military families in 2021. Our 3- to 5-year-old friends in preschool learned the basics of life - spelling their names, identifying colors and shapes, learning to share and work with others, read simple books, and so much more. Did we mention that Armed Services YMCA is the only preschool in Hawai`i that explores the basics of robotics and coding using KinderLab’s KIBO kits? It’s true! ASYMCA keiki LOVE learning about science, technology, engineering, art, and music. Operation Hero, a free program for military children in grades 1 to 6, is designed to help students cope and adjust to the unique challenges of military life like frequent moves and deployment separation. After a long year of helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by doing school at home, students from Hickam, Mokapu, and Solomon Elementary Schools happily and safely gathered for Operation Hero where they leaded in to learn about what makes them uniquely themselves. Enrichment Programs started in summer 2020 in response to parents seeking ways to bridge the educational gap created while children attended school virtually. Its success led to a full year of programs in 2021, enrolling 451 new students in Spring, Summer, and Fall Break. • Spring Break: 3-2-1 Blast Off! • Summer Break: Hawaiiana, South Pacific, and Robots • Fall Break: Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead! We look forward to building and expanding Enrichment Programs in 2022.

HEALTHY LIVING

“Being healthy is a success many people forget to celebrate.” - Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States of America

“Our Nation must provide sufficient access to healthcare. We owe our heroes no less.” - Dan Lipinski, former U.S. Representative

Good health is critical to military and family readiness. ASYMCA Hawaii’s Healthy Living services aim to help military families maintain good health by providing childcare during medical appointments, and a steady, reliable source of staple food items at no cost. These services are provided by our Food for Families and Children’s Waiting Room (CWR) programs. Food for Families distributed close to 200,000 pounds of food in 2021. 165,740 pounds through twice monthly `Ohana Food Drops, and nearly 50,000 pounds through our Food Pantries. Thanks to ongoing partnerships, ASYMCA Hawai`i is able to provide items like milk, eggs, bread, fresh and frozen fruits and veggies, snacks, bacon, and other deli meats on a regular basis for military families in need. Children’s Waiting Room saw the biggest increase in utilization in 2021 following the reopening of medical facilities after 15 months of restricted access due to COVID-19. During that time, hard-working CWR staff refreshed the room with new carpets and toys, installed Internet access, added a television and iPads to their collection of childcare tools, and deep cleaned the room from floor to ceiling. We are ready to meet and serve more military families in 2022.

WAAF FOOD PANTRY

With an unprecedented two years of living with COVID-19, we look forward to reaching new heights of health and wellness with our military families in 2022.

CELEBRATING THE MILITARY FAMILY 2021

ASYMCA Hawaii’s annual Celebrating the Military Family Breakfast began in 2012 and has been celebrated every year since. November became the month of choice because it is Military Family Appreciation Month, a national designation established by Armed Services YMCA in 1993. As each year comes to a close, and before the busy holiday season, Celebrating the Military Family Breakfast provides an opportunity to lift up military families near and far. ASYMCA Hawai`i works with senior military leaders to recognize an exemplary junior enlisted military family from each branch of service and celebrates them. 2021’s Celebrating the Military Family honorees are an amazing group - we have a survivor of domestic violence; a no-nonsense master of logistics; a warrior who stepped in and up during COVID-19; a caring and compassionate squadron leader; a communityminded mama and papa dynamic duo; an advocate;

11

a hardworking successful small business owner; a number of dual-military couples; a lifesaver. Usually held as an in-person event at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, this year’s 9th annual Celebrating the Military Breakfast on November 3, 2021 was held virtually and is available to watch at www.asymca.org/ celebratingthemilitaryfamily2021. Join us in celebrating this year’s outstanding Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airmen, Guardian, Coast Guardsman, and National Guardsman. A special mahalo to the 2021 Celebrating the Military Family Breakfast Planning Committee, Eddie Quan for emceeing this year’s program, the 25th Infantry Division’s Hui Ha`a Kia Team for getting the event started with their rousing warrior battle cry, and the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band for closing out the virtual ceremony with the Armed Forces Medley.

We bid her a fond and heartfelt a hui hou as she enjoys retirement with husband, Admiral Tom Fargo, USN (Ret.) and thank them for continuing to serve on the Celebrating the Military Family Event Planning Committee. The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) recently donated $200,000 to ASYMCA Hawai`i on behalf of Admiral and Mrs. Fargo to commemorate Admiral Fargo’s retirement from their Board of Directors after 15 years of service, including two years as Board Chair. “We are so very grateful for this generous gift from USAA,” said Laurie Moore, ASYMCA Hawaii Executive Director, “We’ve had the pleasure of working with Sarah and Admiral Fargo for many years and are in constant awe of what they do for others, particularly our nation’s military members. They are really amazing people.”
