To avoid large crowds and be mindful of others’ health and well-being, our K-Bay Branch opted for a socially distanced graduation. Graduate families visited the branch in 15-minute increments to take commemorative photos, and receive their diplomas, elbow bumps, snacks, and other treats from their teachers. Aloha Friends of the Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i, From the first reports of COVID-19, just about everything in 2020 has been described as unprecedented. What is not unprecedented, however, has been Armed Services YMCA’s (ASYMCA) continued service to Hawai`i’s military through a challenging time.

LEADERSHIP REPORT

While our community as a whole dealt with stressors associated with COVID-19, military family challenges were further exacerbated by the pandemic. Deployments and relocations were upended when stop movement orders were initiated, and military family incomes were drastically reduced when spouses lost their jobs. With your support, ASYMCA Hawai`i remained steadfast, ready, willing, and able to help military families through the ups and down of 2020.

ASYMCA Hawai`i was deemed an essential service during the pandemic and while our operations were A message from Lt Gen Dan “Fig” Leaf, modified, we never shut down. Our food pantries USAF (Ret.), Board of Management stayed open to provide food for military families; we Chairman and Laurie Moore, Armed delivered care packages to single servicemen and Services YMCA Hawai`i Executive Director women in quarantine after returning from deployment; assisted dual military families with emergency childcare; and connected our teachers and families through online interactive early education classes, conducting more than 675 hours of virtual learning over six weeks. Our team spent the second half of April preparing for our eventual reopen of in-person services and programs, and by the beginning of May, we were well on our way. June and July saw us safely providing much of our regular scheduled programming in-person. These difficult times are not the first difficult times in which Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i has faithfully served our military community. And we’ll continue doing so no matter what challenges come our way, thanks to the incredible support we receive from friends like you. The world has changed dramatically, and our military members and their families need for stability and belonging amidst the upheaval is now greater than ever. This report details how your generous support has impacted military families during an unprecedented year. Mahalo nui loa for the vital role you play in Strengthening Our Military `Ohana. On behalf of those we serve,

Lt Gen Dan “Fig” Leaf, USAF (Ret.) Chairman, Board of Management

Laurie Moore Executive Director

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G Regular check-ups and stable, wholesome nutrition are essential components of healthy living. ASYMCA Hawai`i’s Children’s Waiting Room and Food for Families programs keep service members healthy and mission ready.

16,790 people fed through ASYMCA Hawai`i’s Food for Families program

Children’s Waiting Room (CWR) provides childcare for parents with medical issues requiring in-person care. ASYMCA Hawai`i CWRs operated by appointment during the shutdown and reopened to full-time, walk-in hours in midMay. 1,834 military children were served in 2020. According to a recent study, 40 percent of active-duty families had food and nutrition support needs since the pandemic hit and with military spouses laid off from jobs at four times the rate of the rest of the population, ASYMCA’s Food for Families program has played an important role in supporting our Forces. Food Pantries were available to families in need through June by appointment, and open full-time after July 1st. When a family had a need beyond what could be supplied through the pantries, with your help, ASYMCA Hawai`i was able to provide emergency financial assistance in the way of commissary gift cards.

171,863 pounds of food distributed through `Ohana Food Drops

Our regular, twice monthly `Ohana Food Drops continued throughout the year, despite having to be conducted as a drive thru and pre-bagged food distribution from March to July. ASYMCA Hawai`i distributed 171,863 lbs. of food during `Ohana Food Drops in 2020.

E A R LY C H I L D H O O D & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COVID-19 pushed ASYMCA Hawai`i and our military `ohana into uncharted territory. Millions of people having to quarantine and use the internet as a proxy for human interaction was surreal, but as you would expect, we leaned into the challenge and made it successful. Within a week of the initial shutdown, ASYMCA staff diligently worked to transition all early childhood education classes to 58 weekly virtual, interactive learning sessions. In a span of six weeks, ASYMCA Hawai`i teachers conducted more than 675 hours of online classes with eager and enthusiastic students. We successfully prepared our graduating keiki for transition to elementary school and celebrated their milestone with drive up preschool graduation in late May. By July, in-person Playmorning, Early Learning Readiness and Parent Participation Preschool classes resumed with CDC mandated social distancing, twice daily temperature checks, hand-washing and sanitation stations, masks, sneeze guards, and other precautionary measures. With concern for elementary aged children who had been out of school since March, ASYMCA Hawai`i offered summer Educational Enrichment programs to bolster academic and social development. 882 military children participated in two Robotics Camps and three STEAMfocused camps in June and July.

F A M I LY R E S I L I E N C Y Truly an unprecedented year, COVID-19 prompted ASYMCA Hawai`i to reinstate, amp-up, and create support services to sustain strong military families. 1,200 hours of emergency childcare for essential personnel was provided at ASYMCA Hawai`i branches, giving keiki a safe place to connect with others in a fun, supervised environment. Many of these participants were children of single or dual military parents tasked with supporting the military’s COVID-19 response. Single and junior enlisted service members received care packages from ASYMCA Hawai`i with food and other items to support and encourage individuals during their 14-day quarantine after returning from deployment. Operation NAAT Attack helped military families with a compelling need for travel pay for the COVID-19 Nucleic Acid Amplification Test on their way back to Hawai`i. Operation NAAT Attack assists junior enlisted families dealing with emergencies on the mainland. Parents’ Night Out resumed at all ASYMCA Hawai`i branches in August and gave military children another opportunity to engage with others, play games, make crafts, watch movies, and enjoy a meal together. Parents enjoyed a night to focus on one another during a challenging time. 298 military families participated in Parents’ Night Out in 2020. Operation Holiday Joy also brought hundreds of community members together in support of military families in need. Receiving all the fixings for a holiday meal during a time of increased financial pressure was a gift to 3,392 families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Assistance from organizations like the Hickam AFB Commissary, Kaneohe Bay MCBH Commissary, Schofield Barracks Commissary, Military Affairs Council, and events like Hooligan LLC’s Toy Truck Run ensured a merry Christmas during a challenging year.

“ My grandson is stationed at Pearl Harbor and lives in the barracks. He had an emergency appendectomy before Christmas and had no one checking on him because we have no family there and couldn’t travel due to COVID-19 restrictions. ASYMCA stepped in and were able to get him snacks, breakfast foods, and other quick meals he could keep handy during bed rest. Thank you, ASYMCA Hawai`i! Meemaw and Peepaw in Fayetteville, NC

We got a call from my father-in-law asking if we could come to Destin right way. Mom was in the final stages of cancer and wasn’t doing well. Operation NAAT Attack helped us get to Florida in time to see my mother-in-law and say goodbye. It also allowed me to get back to my daily routine without quarantining after traveling back to Hawai`i. 2020 was a tough year but there were points of hope, like finding Operation NAAT Attack, that made things a little easier along the way. November is Month of the Military Family. Celebrated nationally, it’s a time to acknowledge the tremendous sacrifices military families make - long separations, frequent relocations, and ongoing apprehension for service members whose work takes them to hazardous locations. Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i commemorates this monumental time for the military community through its annual Celebrating the Military Family Breakfast. Each year, one family from each military branch is recognized for their exemplary service. Honorees are nominated and selected by senior leaders who attest to the service member rising above adversity to overcome and strengthen the bond between peers at work, family members at home, and people in the community. The annual event, usually held as a gathering of 450 friends, supporters, and community `ohana, was celebrated virtually in 2020 and themed DOING THE EXTRAORDINARY EVERYDAY. “2020 has been an extraordinary year,” said Admiral John Aquilino, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, “and our families and service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard have all performed extraordinary during this time period. You’ve all shown strength, resilience, and you’ve achieved mission success in the most difficult of circumstances. I am honored to be able to celebrate your selection.” A special mahalo goes to the 2020 Celebrating the Military Family Event Planning Committee, Eddie Quan for emceeing this year’s program, and the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band for closing out the virtual ceremony with the Armed Forces Medley, honoring each branch of service. Visit www.asymca.org/celebratingthemilitaryfamily2020 to watch the ceremony.

WHAT DONORS SAY ABOUT ASYMCA HAWAI`I

“ Operation Hero made a big impact on my daughter when dad deployed. Getting to know other kids with a deployed parent helped her open up. ASYMCA programs makes a difference. That’s why we donate. Operation Hero Parent from Wheeler Elementary School

I am so thankful for what you do for our kiddos. What an amazing service for our military family to ensure busy parents can get their healthcare needs addressed. Physician at Tripler Army Medical Center in regards to Children’s Waiting Room

We lived out of suitcases in a hotel room for months when we got here. Thanks to the ASYMCA, our son found friends and a sense of home at preschool weeks before we moved into our new house! It’s not much, but we’re happy to help and donate when we can.

Military life takes a toll on people. I can’t imagine living in a constant state of anxiety over the next deployment or relocation. I donate because unlike military families, my life is stable and mostly predictable. That’s a luxury I’m willing to give up a weekly Starbucks for.

Parent Participation Preschool Dad

ASYMCA Hawai`i Staff

“ We’ve been blessed to meet wonderful people while working with the DoD on various contracts. It’s an honor to give back to the men and women who serve, and their families who support them. They’re the real heroes. Local Small Business Owner from Honolulu

Local Business Executive from Kailua

Many of our staff are Veterans and in the National Guard. Supporting the ASYMCA is another way we show our appreciation to them and the men, women, and families who endure hardships so we can live the good life.

Going to a doctor’s appointment six months pregnant with two little ones under five is ... eventful. We donated because it’s so helpful to have a place where my kids have fun and are cared for while I’m at my check-ups. Repeat Guest at Children’s Waiting Room

We give because we remember being a junior enlisted family. Now that we can, we’re honored to give back to families who are getting started. Reaching out to give support is just as important as being able to ask for help. Long time ASYMCA Hawai`i donor and friend

“ Finding the Armed Services YMCA when we PCSed to Hawaii was like finding a gem! We happily donate so other little boys like ours will have the opportunity to learn from the ASYMCA’s wonderful teachers. Mom of 4-year-old in Parent Participation Preschool
