Is it us or does the young man’s sign on the cover strike a chord? The photo was taken during our annual Operation Ride Home campaign.

The young soldier, PFC Bryce Williams, a US Army Signals Intelligence Analyst, was selected to go home for the holidays after telling us about losing his grandfather over the summer. His grandfather was always just a holler and few houses down the street but PFC Williams could not go home for the funeral due to duty requirements and the cost of airfare. He deeply regretted not being present with family during that time. A few months down the line, he heard about Operation Ride Home, checked-in with his Command for leave approval, submitted his application, and hoped for the best. PFC Williams said in his application, “My grandmother is older than my grandfather was. I think this may be my last time to not only see her in person, but the rest of my family as one unit. With this in mind, I ask for help so this time, I can do the right thing. I would like to make as many memories as I can with my family because life is fast and fleeting.” If you haven’t already, flip to the back of this report to see a photo of PFC Williams’ reunion with his mom and grandmother. It is our privilege to give this young soldier hope and a reel of fond memories to call on when military life throws him a curveball. This is just one of many stories that depict Armed Services YMCA Hawaii’s impact on military families here, across the nation, and globally. Life if full of challenges. It’s human to need an extra boost of support every now and then. Many of us have family, friends, longtime neighbors and community members in close proximity to rely on when the going gets tough. Most military families in Hawai`i don’t have that luxury. Armed Services YMCA Hawai`i is here; we’ve been here for more than a century now, as an extended ohana, when military families need a helping hand.

Please savor this year’s Annual Report. You’ll read about flourishing partnerships, like the 11-year relationship we have that made PFC Williams’ trip home for the holidays possible, and the many ways your generous support impacts military families as they build strength through resilience. Mahalo nui loa in the vital role you play in Strengthening Our Military `Ohana.

On behalf of those we serve,

WHAT FAMILIES ARE SAYING ABOUT ARMED SERVICES YMCA HAWAI`I

My daughter was assigned a teamwork project in class based on structural engineering/integrity. She’s normally the quiet one who doesn’t say much. Because of camp, she took the lead, and her team was the only team to complete the project correctly. My daughter couldn’t stop smiling as she was telling me all about her day in school. Thank you.

There are just so few programs that TRULY help military families. What you offer at the ASYMCA is really special. We are forever grateful for the ASYMCA Hawaii’s generosity, empathy, and vision for the military community.

Times are tough and paychecks only stretch so far. It is a blessing to be able to walk in the ASYMCA Marketplace and grab a few items and be able to make it to the next payday. Staff are welcoming and helpful, and there is never any judgment on why you are there.

Our daughter loves ASYMCA preschool! She went from being a child that was frightened of new situations and people, to one that thoroughly embraces new experiences. Additionally, our family has made lasting friendships with parents of other children in this program; friendships that have been instrumental in our assimilation into the military community in Hawai`i.

The ASYMCA Hawaii’s preschool program provides an excellent education program for younger children right here on the base. Students are taught by a wonderful, enthusiastic staff who understand military lifestyles. The program focuses on teaching kindergarten standards and modeling correct behaviors in a school setting which sets children up for success as they prepare to enter the next grade level.
