“…architects have failed their potential clients. In the mesmerizing light of the heroic, design architects have been trained to serve the very few, as reflected in the total belief in customization (at a high price) and the uniqueness of each project.” “Education in which innovation, speculation, fantasy, form, and design take the front seat represents failure.” Lars Lerup, After the City, p.25

THE NORDIC CONNECTION: A SUMMARY Nordic influence is known in portuguese architecture, as Távora, Siza and Hestnes lively experienced the works of architects such as Aalto, Asplund and Fehn. After this strong encounter, the dialogue has somehow been lost in translation. The Nordic Satellite at 2016 Lisbon Architecture Triennale is an invitation for a conversation between Nordic and Portuguese architects, an opportunity for a challenging re-encounter in Lisbon. Besides the geographical distance and differences, Nordic and Portuguese architects still share the same persistent tradition - skills for adapting architecture to its context. Furthermore, several Nordic architecture schools, mostly based outside capital cities, are reflecting upon the specificity of local resources and the opportunities of northern contexts. A series of precursory master programmes focusing on local problems and conditions are broadening the spectrum of discussion and knowledge towards a local-global emergent architecture practice strongly engaged with the world in transformation. Understanding academia as a field for practice, we consider fundamental to bring the debate of these Nordic architecture schools to the agenda.

THE POWER OF EXPERIMENT is a Workshop-Exhibition - Publication.

THE WORKSHOP 3 - 6 October 2016

WORKSHOP GOALS The workshop aims at exploring strategies for collaborative learning and practice, working through collective conceptualization and action, with and around the three main vectors: FORMULATE, FORMALIZE, PERFORM. The workshop aims also at testing the possibilities of such collaborative strategies and methods through a speculative and performative building experiment. This experiment will focus on expanded notions of thinking/ designing/building to produce a common space, which does not focus on the ability of architecture to reproduce, represent or serve a certain use, but on the performative power of building.

FORMULATE/ FORMALIZE/ PERFORM In ‘FORMULATE’ we aim to open a space for becoming, privileging processes and modalities of thinking that question what we think we know about architecture and the architect. Such questioning is informed by empirical findings, theoretical reflections, and alternative values such as the willingness to engage and the responsibility to care. Through ‘FORMALIZE’ we will discuss and project diverse forms of action within dynamic socio-cultural and economic contexts. We will build up on the foundation of shared knowledge emerging from the first vector, to approach an ethical body of the architect. ‘PERFORM’ will be about what architecture does, its impacts and effects in the territory, addressing key issues 03

such as community, ecology, sustainability and urban policies. This third vector will provide an opportunity to turn the concepts and discussions into operative tools for speculative and performative design experiments.

EXPERIMENTAL LAB The workshop will be a pedagogical and experimental laboratory: 1) As a living space to test, play, learn and work together, producing and gaining knowledge with the experiments of the group. 2) As a space, that will present and evaluate the dynamics, knowledge, complexities and uncertainties of the process and will transform this dark matter into experiential space. 3) As a collective space to confront, face and learn from the other(s) and from the outcomes of coming and working together.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE Day 1 - FORMULATE: We will do an experiment in “Conceptual Speed Dating for Collective Definitions”, based on the reading of a number of concepts that each of the programs/masters brings with them, and leading to the performative construction of a pool of common and situated knowledge, emerging from the discussions we will have and in relationship with the specificities of the Workshop, Exhibition and Triennale. What can we do with these concepts? How are they useful? What could they mean? A Short List of Concepts: context, site-making, intravention, matters-of-care, territory, engaged practice, emergent practice, emergence, heritage, transformation, immediacy, to architect, transversality, diffraction, apparatus. Day 2 - FORMALIZE: The discussion continues now on the foundation of our shared knowledge about those “The Power of Experiment” Nordic Satellite/Lisbon Architecture Triennale 4th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale / 2016 October 03 – December 11

04

concepts, and aims at the construction of an ethical body of the architect. Expanding architecture’s usual tools and methodologies with other, alternative ones that we deem necessary, and transforming the concepts of Day 1 in operative ways.

Day 2/3/4 - PERFORM: Some of the operative

tools will be selected and turned into speculative/performative design and construction assignments: in groups, we will build, with very limited materials, as if sketching 3-dimensionally, skeletons of an architecture to be/ come: an architecture for listening, an architecture for sharing, an architeccture for loving ,an architecture for meeting, etc.

BREATHING EXERCISES Related to the Last Experiment PERFORM choreographer Clara Andermatt will be with you on the 4 and 5 October to start the morning with some 30 min fundamental Breathing Exercises. Please do bring confortable clothing and shoes. After the workshop, we will develop further some of those experiences/ideas, and we will produce content for the Exibhition and the Publication. The final product is an A1 poster per team to be part of the Exhibition and to be delivered before Monday 7th of November.

THE EXHIBITION

24 November - 11 December 2016 Opening 24 November at 6.30 pm The proposals and methods from Nordic Schools approach contemporary problematic with defined criteria, critical eyes, and creativity - shifting from attainment of competences and static knowledge to privileging processes and experimental based learning. The Exhibition is aimed to clarify common features, approach methods and contribute to give visibility to an emergent common ground - recognising the role of academia in addressing a world in transformation, where architecture plays a major role in developing strategies for development. The Exhibition is using part of the outcome of the workshop: content is aiming to deconstruct our preconceived ideas about the roles of the architect and architecture, and expand our awareness of other ways of practicing architecture in relationship with various political, environmental and economical constraints and agendas.

THE BOOK

Launched in the Closing Week 5-11 December 2016 The Book is meant be a plural collective reflection extended to a wider audience and, will be made out with the contribution of teachers, students, curators and invited guests. // Book is the project final piece, capable of disseminating, starting with the geographies covered by all the participants. It is aiming to build bridges and share knowledge between pedagogies, practices and different generations of architects. Students pay in advance 30€ for to receive one book delivered in the closing of the project. “The Power of Experiment” Nordic Satellite/Lisbon Architecture Triennale 4th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale / 2016 October 03 – December 11

PROJECT PARTNERS AND PARTICIPANTS 4th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale “THE FORM OF FORM” Architects transform the world with architecture, and whatever the bias adopted to discuss such transformations it all goes back to the forms they are able to produce or preserve. Since Sullivan’s famous dictum, “form follows function”, which became the touchstone for many architects, there has been considerable discussion of this idea. Despite the historical significance of form in Architecture, the published sources about the subject frequently fall short of being clear or accessible to a wider audience. The innovative character of this programme is the relationship of these positions not only through aesthetical and technological approaches but also in relation to the social and political realms. With challenging and critical thought provoking contributions from various Architects and Studios around the world, the programme underlines the importance of diversity in research and cultural exchange in raising awareness not only to specialists but also to a wider non-specialized interested audience that will be able to recognize the contemporary challenges of architecture, namely in aesthetical, technological, social, cultural, political and economical approaches. “The Form of Form” is articulated under a narrative sequence that unfolds according to three major episodes: one regarding authorship and form (*The Form of Form*), other focusing on processes and the making of forms (*Building Site*), and the trio is completed with one episode on cities and the complex analytical practice of urban forms (*The World in Our Eyes*). The satellites are complementary episodes that connect the threads in between the major events and form a coherent set. This narrative aims to open new possibilities for reflection and experimentation in the different roles and effects of form in contemporary architecture and society. Lisbon Architecture Triennale Lisbon Architecture Triennale is a non-profit association whose mission is to research, foster and promote architectural thinking and practice. It holds a major forum every three years for debate, discussion and dissemination of architecture across geographic and disciplinary boundaries. The Embassies The Embassies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in Portugal are supporting partners of the project. DENMARK Aarhus School of Architecture Master Transformation + Architectural Heritage The programme focuses on promoting qualified handling and management of our architectural heritage. Students acquire skills in the area’s theory formation, exploration and documentation, in valuation and in strategic heritage management. We call the programme a Nordic master for the reason that the four semester weeks are located in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland respectively. FINLAND Oulu School of Architecture Architectural Design The aim of the International Master’s Programme is to provide knowledge and skills in architectural design, design of urban spaces, architectural lighting, detailing of interiors and exteriors, and basics of research and theory of architecture. The goal is to encourage students to develop a personal relationship with architecture and design. The Master’s studies provide graduates with practical skills needed in the architect’s profession and expertise to participate in research and to carry out post-graduate studies. The contents of the design oriented study programme are based on the tradition and experience of teaching design closely related to architecture. The focus of studies is on studio projects, varying from larger scale public buildings to the designing of details - both for buildings and urban structures - with emphasis on sustainability. Additionally the lectures cover contemporary features of Finnish and Scandinavian architecture, and a wide scope in the latest developments of wood, steel and concrete as building materials.

SWEDEN Umeå School of Architecture Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention Sharing, Displacing, Caring: Life in Common The Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention (LiAi) is structured around the idea of architectural intervention, interrogated in relationship to its duration and effects in and around the community where it takes place; indeed, in its potential to create community. Whilst the program’s approach can be related to certain artistic practices, it is rooted in an understanding of spatial conceptualization and production as the architect´s most important skill. The program’s approach questions divisions between theory and practice, and encourages students to engage simultaneously with philosophies and technologies, critical thinking and hands-on making, aiming at the development of alternative, socially and ethically committed practices. NORWAY Norwegian University of Science and Technology / Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts / Department of Architectural Design, Form and Colour Studies Making is Thinking Making is Thinking investigates skills connecting body and mind. Our activities revolve around hands-on experiences, full-scale building, and artistic methods. Our students are challenged to practice lateral thinking in order to break free from design fixations. They gain a knowledge that not only covers professional and academic skills, but also contextualises tacit knowledge. The traditional design studio cannot mimic the embodied experience that is achieved through the real experience of making. We work in a lab at the university and in contexts outside the university. During the spring semester 2016, a Making is Thinking Master course collaborated with the theatre company Cirka Teater in making performance and exhibition spaces for a festival at Nyhavna, a harbor area in Trondheim.

NORWAY Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies/ Oslo School of Architecture and Design Landscape Architecture The Master Program is established to attract individuals who want to develop their skills and capabilities within urban and landscape planning and design in the Subartic.“Concepts for Subarctic landscapes” gives students basic knowledge of Subartic environments and climates as well as knowledge of ecological systems and human made systems.“Urban ecologies in the north”gives students extensive knowledge of Subarctic ecosystems, plant societies, water systems and how to integrate urban and ecological systems through ‘landscape urbanism’ as method and approach. “Subarctic landscape urbanism” gives student knowledge of and tools for the design for urban infrastructural systems and urban ecological systems as well as of settlement transformation. “Territorial practices for the north” is a more conceptual studio, giving students extensive knowledge of political, economic and social factors in Subarctic territories, and training them to conceive projects that identify and activate community based, industrial, and territorial potentials. MINHO/ PORTUGAL Universitiy of Minho/ School of Architecture The Architecture’s School at the University of Minho is an organic unity of teaching and research autonomy of academic (scientific, educational and cultural) and administrative. In exercising its autonomy open to interdisciplinary perspectives and proposes to develop a framework of complementarity of knowledge, research and advanced training, and promote the provision of services to the community, in collaboration with other departments and institutions. The Architecture’s School brings together human and material resources adequate and consistent development of its scientific and educational activities within individual projects or in partnership with other units, national or international. The Architecture’s School provides, since 1996, even then, with the appointment of Autonomous Department of Architecture, the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge in the field of architecture. It is the specificity of education provided that by promoting an “integrated knowledge” - not by challenging the various disciplinary autonomies, but overcoming their status as mere sum of knowledge - contributes to the formation of a methodology of the project essential to the exercise of Architecture in its multiple valences. By building a route itself, the Architecture’s School has been able to survive in a system where, until recent years, pontificated oldest institutions and anchored in the national urban centers. A balanced combination of strategic focus, scientific merit and persistent work it has achieved a clear recognition.

21

Emphasis is also the location of the Architecture’s School at the center of the University of Minho in Gui– marães, endowed with a historical center recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage, a city in 2012 will be European Capital of Culture. ÉVORA/ PORTUGAL Universitiy of Évora/ Department of Architecture Graduation in Architecture at the University of Évora started in the academic year 2001/2002 and is offered by the Department of Architecture, which with the Department of Visual Arts and Design, the Department of Scenic Arts and Department of Music, constitute the School of the Arts. This unique academic environment is propitious to a truly multidisciplinary approach to which the architecture curricula tries to benefit the most making this graduation program accurately innovative in Portugal. Academic faculty is constituted by distinguished PhD scholars, as well as by renowned architects with a national and international established professional practice. The Department offers a five-year degree program in architecture (BA+MA) with emphasis in its last years in advance architectural studies in architecture. The program seeks to offer a balance between theoretical and practical studies and is divided into 10 Semesters. Learning is based on a strong culture of teaching Design Studios, where students and teachers work together to tackle challenging projects, thus creating an extraordinary relationship of education and applied research. The School of the Arts and the Department of Architecture have organized several international workshops and lecture series, and are nowadays recognized as a major platform for discussion on some key issues of contemporary architectural culture.

CURATOR// NORDIC SATELLITE artéria studio ARTÉRIA is an independent architectural studio based in Lisbon, founded in 2011 by Ana Jara and Lucinda Correia, which aims to conceive, develop and promote urban rehabilitation projects. ARTÉRIA believes in action research projects, within an interdisciplinary framework, to create unique proposals together with public and private organizations. ARTÉRIA defends the importance of education for space and architecture, by building site-specific educational projects to develop spatial reading and abstraction capabilities. ARTÉRIA works on the social, cultural and artistic dimensions of architecture, through the direct involvement of communities, by the production of their own intervention programs in the territory, establishing partnerships with local associations as well as public entities.
