News from Pix Brook Academy

As we approach the end of the new half term we are already more than half way through the academic year. It’s been amazing and busy in equal measure and while one national crisis in the form of the Pandemic is beginning to recede it is dreadful that circumstances in Eastern Europe are so worrying. I know many young people are understandably concerned about these events and we are working with the children to try to help them understand what this means for them and also to appreciate how lucky we are to be living where we do. As a school we have offered our support to the people of Ukraine and as such have contacted the Need Project to see what we might do to help. They are currently engaged in providing resources to the people of Ukraine in the form of children’s clothing; nappies; wipes; toiletries and clean bedding. Our parent body responded magnificently to this appeal.

The last couple of weeks have been really busy for all, but in particular our year 6 pupils who have completed a full round of mock SATs exams. As you would expect pupils have responded magnificently. We took the opportunity to make use of the top floor of the building enabling a large number of rooms to be used. All available staff were used to support the pupils providing many rooms with a small number of pupils in each. We are obviously working hard with this year group including Wellbeing lessons; cooking; Pilates; revision strategies and brain food. We know this can be a nerve-wracking time for young people and as such we have tried to make things as normal as possible. There is much to learn from this process and we will make sure we do so over the next two months of preparation.

In addition to these extra challenges we have been lucky enough to have the “Saxon” experience, we have also been benefiting from the Happy Puzzle Company that are working with pupils focusing on resilience, teamwork and perseverance.

Finally March saw us immerse ourselves in World book day where the curriculum was collapsed for a whole day and activities were built around some fantastic literature and our fully collapsed timetable enabling all pupils to engage in Science week. Great thanks must go to so many of our parents who were prepared to give up their time to teach our pupils about their jobs. As so often I am genuinely delighted and flabbergasted by our parents generosity.
