Mental Health Matters with Joli Loach

As Spring gets underway and Easter is on the horizon, the theme of new life is all around us.

However, as we emerge from the pandemic, the Putin situation brings a fresh source of fear and uncertainty. Like the Pandemic, this reminds us that much of life remains beyond our control. This is not a comfortable reality for us humans. Whether we are drawn to allowing ourselves to be consumed by the horrors unfolding around the world, whether we avert our eyes and bury our heads or whether we are anywhere in the middle of these positions, the reality of what is happening forces us to reassess what is and is not important as well as what is and is not within our control.

All of this can evoke a strong sense of powerlessness, helplessness and deep sadness. The degree to which we experience these will depend upon our personal history and prior experience of such emotional states as well as our willingness to remain connected to our own hearts, even when to do so brings pain. These are difficult and unprecedented times. We have not been here before. We are in unknown and unfamiliar territory. All of which can be extremely hard on our mental and emotional health especially as the pre-existing, challenges and trials of ordinary living continue too.

This is a time to practice good self care and disciplined boundaries’ around how much time is helpful to spend watching the news.

As a woman with a strong relationship with God, I am commiting my prayers to the God who is in control, to intervene in the problems of the world that threaten humanity.

Whether you are or are not a praying person, now is most definitely the time to be praying!
