News from Gothic Mede Lower School

We have just celebrated World Book Day 2022. We were delighted to welcome author Andy Huxtable to Gothic Mede Academy. The children enjoyed hearing Andy reading extracts from his Charlie Ant series and loved creating new humorous characters. Lots of children took part in a big competition to design a character and we were so proud that one of our pupils won the competition! Congratulations to Amber for designing the winning character entry - a praying mantis!

We looked at lots of wonderful books including Peter H Reynolds' beautiful book "The Dot" . This tells the story of Vashti, a child who t hinks she can't draw. Her teacher knows that there is creative spirit in everyone and gently encourages Vashti to sign the angry dot she initially made in frustration. This sends Vashti on a creative journey of self-belief and helps her discover that where there's a dot there's a way. Acorn class have been copying book covers this week and making beautiful paintings. Jake, who is 3 years old, did this amazing painting of the cover of “The Dot” .

We have also been very lucky to be joined by staff from HSBC. They ran a series of money skills programmes with our Year 3 and 4 children. Included in these were Super Supper Challenge, European Tour, Sporting Chance, Making Wise Choices and The Lost Purse. All children that took part received a certificate and enjoyed the sessions. Rosalie and Eleanor said that it was great and they learned all about budgets and that they were only able to afford one football stadium in their budget though!

We look forward to updating you on more of our news next month in the Arlesey News Magazine.
