Salute and cheers to the architects of The UAP Post for their first issue this Fiscal Year 2023-2024!
The past fiscal year tested our strengths and weaknesses as we started to be gradually free from the restrictions of the past global health crisis. Despite that, my first term as your National President, along with the National Board, did not stop us from figuring out the solutions and ways to bring out the best of UAP to everyone –- thanks to our colleagues from the rest of the 55,000+ architects rallying behind this organization. We are why this profession has never been so exciting through the events, collaborations, initiatives, and other projects we’ve been through. Indeed, the spirit of camaraderie, dedication, and fellowship among us are the factors that bind us as one big family of architects.
During the Inauguration of UAP National Officers for FY 2023-2024 last June 2023, we underlined our new battlecry in futureproofing
HEIGHTS. As we continue to fulfill our Corporate Thrust to listen to the VOICES of our members and immediate stakeholders, our National Ten Priority Programs will remain our blueprint for surpassing the goals and achievements we had in the past Fiscal Year because we believe that learning and winning and even losing, is part of our lifelong cycle to keep the landscape ever-changing.
The first issue of The UAP Post for FY 2023-2024 reflects how UAP ascended to an era where we prioritize growth and progress for each member to make our profession more relevant than ever. Opening this fiscal year on a refreshing start, we are more than optimistic that our Futureproofing Version 2.0 will be a version of breakthroughs in our profession, this organization, and in this industry, from one achievement to another, from one victory to another. In response to our commitment to our members, we hope that the UAP Post will be a platform that echoes the milestones of UAP and its members and inspire its readers to become achievers that could ascend from one challenge to another.
Once again, I wish The UAP Post all the best in featuring stories that salute each Filipino architect, wherever they are in the world!
Lagi’t lagi tayong sasaludo sa bawat arkitektong Pinoy! Mabuhay ang arkitekturang Pilipino!
As we now move forward towards FY 2023-2024, we shall be more than dynamic in advancing the UAP National Plans and Programs guided by the UAP Corporate Theme: “Future Proofing UAP 2.0 – VOICES.”
As we expect the maximum participation and collaboration of the UAP Areas, UAP Regional Districts, UAP Chapters and the General Membership, may we all be inspired to take a “LEAP and ASCENT” for all the opportunities and the possibilities that we can offer to contribute towards the advancement of the UAP organization and in safeguarding the architectural profession.
Similarly, we shall pursue our collaborative actions and shall aim to achieve them. Our success as the only Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization for Architects (IAPOA) shall represent our ambition as we look towards another prospect and direction for a “Future - Progressive UAP”.
Greetings to the National officers, Chapter Presidents and general membership of the UAP!
This Fiscal Year 2023-2024 started with an oath to serve the UAP with dedication and without mental reservation or purpose of evasion. As Vice President of Area B, I am delighted to willingly serve with full capacity the events, programs, and activities of the UAP aligned with the programs of our National President Richard M. Garcia. That having said, I envision the UAP in the forefront of our LGUs by having more CSOs within the cities and municipalities nationwide. I also would want that our RA 9266 be further strengthened so that all Filipino architects be given full recognition. I hope that we have more engagements that will benefit communities through our CSR Program. These dreams would come

My warmest greetings to all chapters and members of our beloved organization, the United Architects of the Philippines!
As we start FY 2023-2024, we view the new fiscal year with much hope and optimism after all the adversities and difficulties we experienced in the previous years. We, the officers of UAP Area D, composed of the four district directors: Arch. Jasper Resari of District D1, Arch. Jing Sahial of District D2, Arch. Marivic Aboloc of District D3, and Arch. Dixie Hannah Lou Sarmiento of District D4, are ever ready to perform our mandates as servant leaders of the UAP while we move forward and guided by our corporate theme, “Future Proofing UAP 2.0 – VOICES.”
We want to thank our Area D members for choosing us to lead for the best interest of our organization and the profession. With our upcoming activities,
As we begin this new fiscal year, I extend a warm welcome to all the brilliant architects who form the foundation of our creative community.
The past few years, we have witnessed unprecedented challenges and changes on a global scale and within our profession. Despite the adversities, we demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, turning obstacles into opportunities, and rising to the occasion to meet the evolving needs of our communities. As we forge ahead, let us carry forward the lessons learned from these experiences and use them as stepping stones to greater heights.
As visionaries who have the power to influence the way we live, work, and interact with the world, let us reaffirm our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility. More than laying bricks and mortar, let us create sanctuaries and spaces that inspire and connect people to the environment and to each other. Together, we can realize a future that is not only aesthetically appealing, but also socially inclusive, culturally rich, and
environmentally conscious. I am excited to see the profound impact of our innovative ideas and transformative designs.
Undoubtedly, we could likewise encounter setbacks and obstacles this new fiscal year. But let us not be disheartened. Instead, let us embrace them with passion, optimism, and perseverance. May this year be one of brilliance and fulfillment. And may your architectural endeavors yield positive results. Once again, welcome to a year of infinite possibilities.
Mabuhay ang Area C! Mabuhay ang mga arkitektong probinsyano!
both in the local and national levels, we are much delighted to guide you under our jurisdiction and beyond.
We will be seeing each other soon.
Mabuhay ang arkitektong Pilipino!
The past fiscal year has witnessed unprecedented changes in our immediate surroundings due to the COVID-19 global pandemic that pushed us further to the new era of handling the challenges the architect’s way. With the advent of digital prevalence, we can find convenience in digesting the information we need, socializing or collaborating with people around us, and designing our plans for the future. Through these factors, we proved that we can ASCEND from the challenges of the past, thus embarking on our better and stronger phase.
Now that we’re in Version 2.0 of Futureproofing our profession and this beloved organization, it is safe to say that we have already ascended through the milestones we have achieved together. As of this writing, we have fifty-one (51) chapters accredited as Civil Society Organizations (CSO) by their local government units - a feat that the UAP has never seen before.
The digitalization of renewing our Good Membership Standing, the rollout of reimagining and renovating our National Headquarters in Quezon City, the anticipation of UAP’s hosting of the 20th Asian Congress of Architects in Boracay, and the forthcoming events leading to our Golden Jubilee Celebration
I would like to congratulate The UAP Post for chronicling a new fiscal year with ascending optimism for Filipino architects.
As your National Treasurer, I, along with our partners from external auditors and accountants, assure you that you will always belong to an organization with a high tolerance for financial transparency and accountability in compliance with the government’s mandate.
As we enjoyed the past fiscal year through the resumption of events, assemblies, and fund-raising initiatives we longed for from the national and chapter levels, UAP maintains its good reputation in its expenditures and liabilities for the benefit of every member architect.
In the international community of architects, the UAP is gradually returning to the world stage as we aim to reintroduce ourserves to the anticipated events by EAROPH, ARCASIA, UIA, and APEC ARCHITECT. Furthermore, the UAP maintains good membership standing with these organizations as it practices due diligence in paying its membership dues.
As we embark on a new fiscal year, I am honored to address you as the UAP National Auditor, entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the financial integrity of our esteemed organization. It is with great pleasure that I present this message in the official newsletter of the United Architects of the Philippines, The UAP Post.
The Fiscal Year 2023-2024 holds immense potential for our profession and the UAP as a whole. We find ourselves in a rapidly changing world, facing numerous challenges and opportunities. It is in such times that architects play a pivotal role in shaping the built environment, responding to societal needs, and fostering sustainable and inclusive development.
One of the key pillars of this fiscal year will be building resilience. Resilience is not just about withstanding external shocks. It is about adapting, innovating, and thriving in the face of adversity. As architects, we have the unique ability to design spaces and structures that can withstand natural disasters, incorporate sustainable practices, and provide safe havens for communities. Let us prioritize resilience in our designs and advocate for its importance in the built environment.
Transparency and accountability are paramount to the success of any
Ascension, a very positive biblical word, and a good conclusion to challenges towards better days. Three years ago, a negative thing happened that is unimaginable that held back humanity. Life was literally halted, and our very existence was threatened. Part of being human is the struggle, but the great thing is that we got back up and evolved. True enough, after three years, humanity has triumphed, back-up learnt and became more resilient, particularly, the relevant professions that can make a difference to the new normal.
The United Architects of the Philippines was no exception during the dark years of the pandemic. We have all experienced the mental and physical suffering during those times; we even lost a good leader in the process, who was a true beacon of help and compassion. We rallied on, continued to be a tightknit community, and helped our members in the best way we could through the organization. This simply proved that even at the toughest of times, as long as we stayed united, we could make a difference. There would be no obstacle or challenge big enough to cut a vital column in our resilient structure of selflessness and service towards our members.
The pandemic has waned, people went back to their normal lives, the organization has gone back to vibrancy and positivity. As we evolve, we get better leaders with greater perspectives and visions. The organization through its leaders is now going through a resurgence of learnt ideas and an enhanced sense of innovation. The world has bounced back from its scars producing a
in 2025, are some of the projects that define the ascending progress of our organization.
The twelve Filipino entries at the World Architecture Festival 2023 and the constant presence of our colleague architects at various international architectural conferences are signs that the Filipino architecture industry is back on its ascending and vibrant spirit.
May these achievements and accolades motivate us to ascend in our humble ways, not only as architects but also as Filipinos who remain unfazed by any challenges of today and tomorrow. On top of that, we may continue encouraging each other to present ourselves to the public as their go-to help for their architectural plans and design needs.
As The UAP Post gets back on track, may this platform ascend more than just being a communicator of good news, but also a listener and a witness to the VOICES of architects looking forward to building a future-proofed and futureready society by being a person to everyone.
Once again, my warmest congratulations to The UAP Post and its readers! Mabuhay ang arkitektong Pilipino! Mabuhay ang UAP!
As stewards of our organization’s financial well-being, we hold a unique responsibility. It’s not just about managing the numbers, but about safeguarding the very foundation upon which our goals and aspirations rest. Sustaining our organization’s financial health is a collective effort. It requires the active participation and support of each and every member. One of the cornerstones of our financial stability is timely compliance with the chapter and membership dues. These contributions are the lifeblood that fuels our initiatives, enables our growth, and allows us to make a meaningful difference.
Let us continue to ascend together as one organization that breathes one aspiration for Filipino architecture!
Let our VOICES unite all Filipino architects. Mabuhay ang bawat arkitektong Pilipino! Mabuhay ang UAP! Nawa’y pagpalain tayong lahat.
organization, and the UAP is no exception. As the National Auditor, I pledge to uphold the highest standards of financial transparency and accountability. By ensuring that our financial processes are robust, efficient, and aligned with best practices, we can strengthen the trust and confidence of our members and stakeholders.
Moreover, this fiscal year, we will continue to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among our members. Architects possess diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives. And by coming together, we can leverage our collective wisdom to address the complex challenges we face. Let us actively participate in seminars, workshops, and conferences organized by the UAP and its chapters, as these platforms provide opportunities for learning, networking, and professional growth.
In conclusion, as we embark on this new fiscal year, let us embrace resilience, transparency, collaboration, and digital transformation. Together, we can shape a future where architecture serves as a catalyst for positive change, sustainable development, and the well-being of our society.
Thank you for your continued support, and I wish you all a productive and successful year ahead.
more aware and sensitive generation that knows how to strike balance in our daily lives. Young leaders have taken over, tech savvy and informed, opinionated, and empowered. We must recognize that as the world bounced back, you need to be in the know to cope up with the future.
Futureproofing, the battle cry of our National President for our profession and the organization, needs to be reverberated to all in nation building. The pandemic magnified architects’ relevance to society; we should embrace it with enthusiasm and upgrade our thinking, our branding and our way of life. We should be proud yet humble, confident but never arrogant, assertive yet respectful. An architect’s vision is farther than most professions. This simply makes us prime movers of a country’s development and infrastructure.
The future may be ambiguous, but most realize that architects are vital to nation building. On our side, we should stop complaining and start analyzing, stop procrastinating and mobilize concept making, battle the status quo and start innovating. We should do our part, play our role and be the change we want to see in our country.
The world experienced a setback for three years, but we have bounced back. It’s been said that “The bounce back is always stronger than the setback.” The UAP, being the prime organization of architects, is stronger than ever. Let us continue to uphold UNITY and support each other for a futureproof profession.
It is a great honor to be part of the National Board of Directors of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) for the Fiscal Year 20232024. I extend my warmest greetings to all members of the College of Fellows (COF) and the general membership of the UAP.
The UAP Post is a significant communication channel for the members of the UAP to share their insights, expertise, and researches for professional development, career advancement and to create opportunities for collaboration to benefit our society and humanity.
As I begin my term as the Chancellor of the College of Fellows for this fiscal year, along with the board of officers of the COF, we have come prepared at the start of our term with the team-building session we conducted a few days before the inaugural event. The purpose statement of the COF, “Kaagapay sa Paglago ng UAP,” serves as the fundamental reason for our existence. Our future goal, outlined in our vision statement, is for COF members to become role models for Filipino architects who are globally competitive and achieving a level 9.0 standard by the year 2030. Guided by the COF core values of Excellence, Respect, and Integrity, these principles will remain essential and enduring. In this fiscal year, we are committed to facilitating the enhancement of our
members’ competencies. To achieve this, we have launched “Fellow Talk,” a lecture series featuring renowned resource speakers from Asia and Europe. These speakers are experts in their respective fields, having garnered international awards and recognition. We have made this lecture series accessible to all UAP members, enabling them to learn and be inspired by our distinguished panel of speakers.
We will continue to engage with our COF members across the archipelago and those residing overseas through hybrid Zoom meetings for our General Membership Meetings (GMM). Throughout this fiscal year, we have planned visits and activities with our members from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
As we move forward, we eagerly anticipate an outstanding year ahead, following the roadmap we have laid out to serve the College of Fellows and our esteemed organization, the United Architects of the Philippines.

These events also strive to align some of their initiatives with the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to support the Committee on Environment and Ecology in embracing global norms of innovation and technology for effective implementation of industry advancements.
Local chapter accreditation as Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) enables closer partnerships with local leaders while also contributing to the community’s longterm development. The initiative amplifies architects’ voices and advocacy efforts by cultivating a grassroots network of empowered professionals.

These initiatives enable architects to explore diverse perspectives, share best practices, and collaborate on global architectural challenges. By recalibrating mechanisms and initiatives, the AIC ensures strategic alignment for global engagement, empowering architects to form meaningful partnerships and establish a strong presence in the international architectural community. This levels the playing field for Filipino architects.
The Balangkasan Committee will have its blueprint ready for implementation, aiming to deliver an effective debate format that engages the mind and leads to beneficial resolutions for the architectural profession.
The Committee on Accessibility is taking its bold and diverse steps in crafting the accessibility and universal design guide, equipping not only differently abled individuals but also architects with the proper integration of innovative features and PWD-friendly design principles in building standards. Subsequently, strong partnership with concerned government agencies will result in architects obtaining legal accreditation for conducting accessibility audits.
The CGEA’s enhanced methods empower architects to have a significant impact on several fronts, increasing our influence and fostering successful collaboration. Together, we ignite the flame of true service and unwavering dedication, uplifting the architecture profession and the UAP to new heights!

As we more aggressively reconnect and reestablish relationships with colleagues, clients, industry partners, and the society, we see an opportunity for architects to more authentically communicate our stories of struggles and strengths that shaped us over the pandemic years. For a lot of us, we have become more conscious and aware of our sensibilities—our innate ability to respond more sensitively to complex influences. In this journey of selfrediscovery, we learned—both by choice and by circumstance—how we can more effectively process and communicate our thoughts and feelings to a few and to many. Communication becomes impactful if we consciously consider seven key aspects: PURPOSE, INTENT, MESSAGE, MEANING, MODALITY, TIMING, and AUDIENCE.
Before putting it out there, ask yourself: What is your PURPOSE for communicating with others? Is it merely for putting out information or for seeking a response? Is your INTENT to promote or raise awareness? Are you communicating an urgent and relevant concern? What exactly is your MESSAGE and how do you creatively compose it for others to find MEANING in it? Does it come across as important in the way it is written or spoken? Through what MODALITY would it be best delivered? In terms of TIMING, how long (or short) should your message be and when would it be best to communicate it? Most importantly, who is your AUDIENCE? Is your message clearly aimed at your target receivers and is it
feature captivating innovations, ideas, new technologies, and products, leaving attendees energized and ready to revolutionize the architecture practice.

The United Architects of the Philippines—through its Commission on Communications and Creatives—envisions an organization where every architect enhances and develops a set of human skills that are essential in #FutureProofingUAP. As architects, we are creative thinkers and doers. Expectedly, we too, are creative communicators—in the way we write, speak, and act. Mindful of our present conditions and optimistic about our future, we call upon you—the Filipino architect—to join us in our collective quest for self-mastery. With your burning desire to becoming your best version, we could more confidently go beyond our obstacles.
Let me ask you now, are you with us on this quest?
Greetings to our beloved UAP members! On behalf of the Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino (SAF) or Center for Filipino Architecture, I would like to express our utmost excitement to present to you our plans and programs for this fiscal year.
There has never been a better time to be advocates of Filipino architecture than now. Just recently, it has been announced that 11 entries from the Philippines have been shortlisted for the prestigious World Architecture Festival 2023–the country’s largest showing yet at the “largest global live awards event for architects and designers,” according to Kanto.com.
As cliche as it may sound, but I believe that we should look into the past to be able to move forward into the future. Our rich culture and built heritage serve as a great foundation for the current and future generations of architects to aim high and achieve excellence. Empowering our architects to create a new Filipino architecture breathes life and gives respect to our architectural legacy. That would be the SAF’s main goal for this year—to provide the proper guidance and tools for our fellow architects to empower them and value the nation’s significant, historical, and remarkable sites and structures.
We are inviting every UAP chapter, district, and area to collaborate with us and support our key programs:
1. A+D 2.0 ARCHITECTURAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL - A competition for short video documentaries on Filipino Architecture (Student & Professional Categories).
2. FILIPINO ARCHITECTURE SYMPOSIUM - A convention with a series of talks, workshops, exhibits & tours.
3. CULTURAL MAPPING WORKSHOPS – A collaboration with LGUs aimed to educate and assist architects and stakeholders in the creation of cultural mapping in their respective jurisdictions.
4. PUBLICATION OF COFFEE-TABLE BOOK – Plan of SAF, in collaboration with Commission on Education to publish an annual collection of notable architectural works of Filipino architects such as works of Likha awardees or up and coming young architects.
5. UAP MARKER - To identify notable and significant Filipino architectural landmarks, the UAP shall honor them by putting up a marker, signifying their importance based on a set of criteria/guidelines set by SAF.
6. LGU CULTURE AND ARTS COUNCILS’ FORUM – This is to identify LGUs with respective cultural groups and to have a dialogue with them to gain the organization’s exposure where architects’ guidance is needed.
7. STUDIO 53 ARCHITECT-TALKS - A regular broadcast, where we could invite a guest speaker to discuss about issues on Filipino architecture. Please like our social media page to keep updated on our events and activities: https://www.facebook.com/UAPSAF/
We, in the Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino, are encouraging everyone to be ambassadors of Filipino architecture. Looking forward to working with you this fiscal year! Thank you very much!

Speaking at the UIA World 2023 Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark has been an exciting experience with various talks and dialogues and sharing ideas that can help build a better future for everyone. Architects are always at the forefront of change spearheading how we build our communities, most especially our cities. The UIA provides a platform for new ideas to help us exponentially cascade them as we struggle against climate change around the world. Here I share ideas from the panels and talks I was fortunate enough to attend during the event held on July 2 to 6, 2023.
The EU
Bjarke Ingels of BIG talked about the possibility of systemic change and how we can use current technologies to make human habitation more sustainable. By demonstrating how various technologies and methods can be scaled to planetary levels, he made us more aware of the power and feasibility of applying them at the local scale and the potential actions that each of us can embrace. He went on to showcase BIG projects that showcase a more sustainable future that can be fun and beautiful, not just in spite of, but because of the sustainable solutions that can be applied.
Community Building - From Rural Areas to Megacities
Gaetan Siew, Tao Zhizhong, Dominique Perrault, Reiulf Rarnstad, and Line Barfod. The panel discussed about community development and the various challenges of both rural and urban communities. Zhizong shared her experiences in Beijing and the value of sustainable mobility systems to communities and the incorporation of human elements into urban centers. Ramstad showed us the beauty and power of architecture set in rural landscapes that create incredible new settings and exciting new interactions. Perrault demonstrated how urban districts can be revitalized with the insertion of cultural and social centers like the Centre Pompidou and the French National Library.
Cities for People - 50 Years Later
Jan Gehl and Rob Adams revealed how the seminal book, “Life Between Buildings,” published in 1971, has changed how we think about cities and continue to do so. They discussed about the beauty of planning cities for people and not cars and the push for pedestrian mobility and creating dense centers around transportation lines that would allow us to accommodate more people and make urban services more accessible to a vast majority of people.
Architecture of the Pandemic
Thomas Bojstrup, Peter Hinsby, Jesper Nygard, William Ti, Ruffina Thilakaratne, and Michele di Marco.
Bojstrup gave his thoughts about the book, “Architecture of the Pandemic” and how it documents the various solutions and ideas from across the globe to better make us ready for the next one. As part of this panel, I was thrilled to be a part of the UIA Congress speaking about experiences building the Emergency Quarantine Facilities during the pandemic and how architects are vital members of our communities fulfilling the role of planning for challenges that face our
society. Thilakaratne shared her research about the problems of bigger podium developments that destroy the air quality of our cities and how we can address them. Di Marco shared their new platform techne that helps spread new ideas to all the member countries of the WHO.
Mending - Creative Mending Through Climate-Positive Construction or Design
Martha Thorne, Jeanne Gang, Xu Tiantian, Anna Heringer, Renier de Graaf. This was the most interesting panel I attended at the Congress with panelists pointedly discussing the challenges of mending our environment. Gang highlighted her work with the river systems and the value of protecting our waterways by building like-minded partners that empower these programs. Tiantian discussed about “co-authorship” of projects with communities and protecting the social and economic interests of locals. Heringer, who works on developing local materials and methods, shared her work on developing rammed earth as a viable material. De Graaf talked about the unavoidability of climate change and how we constantly ignore the plight of more vulnerable communities.
BIG Precht - A Lyceum
Chris Precht and Kai-Uwe Bergman
This panel shared experiences with the younger generation to enter and excel in the profession. Precht talked about the challenges of design and coming up with new ideas. He described the fragility and insecurities of architecture and how this can be overcome. Bergman discussed their design process and the democratic process that considers every idea based on its own merit. He talked about empowering every member of their team to come up with new ideas and to be aware of the projects eventual purpose.
Velux Daylight Talks - Grafton Architects
Shelley Mcnamara of Grafton Architects presented how light is sculpted and brought inside their work. She showed how we can develop partially enclosed spaces and how we should enjoy the beauty of moving within a space that is connected to the bigger world outside. She waxed about the beauty of windows, of looking up and seeing the sky and how they allow us to connect with the outdoors. “Architecture creates a frame with which we can view the outside world.”
Women and War - Leave No One Behind
Yolanda Reyes, Nina Nedelykov, Dalia Kamal Elshafei, Dalila Mujagic, Khwaja Fatmi, Rasha Nagi, Olena Oliynuk, Sabine Kuper-Busch
The final panel I attended was moderated by our very own Yolanda Reyes. The panel was a call to action for architects to push for displaced women and victims of war. It highlighted the atrocities committed on women and the tragedies of displaced communities. Reyes underscored what need to be done for women placed in vulnerable situations. She promised to champion their cause and to help build a platform that can facilitate solutions and bring everyone together to address this problem.
Overall, the Congress of Architects was an awakening experience to push for solutions to our global problems. It is always a delight to be together with brilliant and passionate people from all corners of the globe.
The United Architects of the Philippines recently held its annual service awards that concluded another successful fiscal year, 2022-2023. This momentous event took place on June 23, 2023 at the magnificent Hotel Monticello in Tagaytay City. The awards ceremony aimed to celebrate and recognize the architects who have wholeheartedly supported the causes of our beloved organization, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP).
The three part program for the UAP Service Awards 2023 was thoughtfully curated to highlight the exceptional contributions of architects in various capacities.
The UAP had the honor of welcoming Tan Sri Dato Sri Ar Haji Esa Bin Haji Mohamed from Malaysia, who was bestowed with the distinguished title of The 12th Honorary Fellow. This prestigious recognition is a testament to his exemplary works and remarkable contributions to the architecture industry, which serves as an inspiration to all architects both Filipino and international.
Furthermore, the UAP expressed its heartfelt gratitude to all the outgoing officers of the National Board of Directors (NBD) for their dedicated service. The organization also extended its best wishes and support to the incoming officers as they embark on their new responsibilities. Their commitment to the profession and the UAP is truly commendable.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the bestowing of awards, where the UAP showed appreciation to the exceptional architects who have made significant contributions and service to our organization. These individuals were acknowledged for their outstanding work and unwavering dedication in serving UAP for the past fiscal year.
It is essential to mention that the success of the UAP Service Awards 2023 would not have been possible without the support and tireless efforts of the UAP National President, Arch. Richard Garcia. His steadfast leadership and unwavering support have propelled our organization forward, enabling UAP to achieve new heights and empower architects across the nation.
As the UAP Service Awards 2023 concluded, a sense of inspiration and pride permeated the atmosphere. The collective achievements and the
unwavering dedication of our Filipino architects is a reminder of the remarkable impact of the architecture profession can have on society. The event served as a platform to honor and celebrate these achievements and to inspire architects to continue striving for excellence to the betterment of the profession and of the nation.
Sulung tamu means “moving forward” when translated to Kapampangan. As past Area A Vice President Donato Magcale has stated, the area’s thrust for the fiscal year is “Forward, Onward, Resolve. In brevity, the theme stands for F.O.R. UAP- Area A. This invokes progression, continuing forward direction, to go further towards the advancement of our plans and programs which we are all equally resolved and decided to attain and achieve “FOR UAP Area A.” Aligned with the Area A’s thrust, “Moving Forward” makes an appropriate theme for the assembly as well as the rationale for its logo.
Last February 23-25, 2023, the UAP Area A Assembly 2023—an annual gathering Area A’s eight districts and eighty-three strong UAP chapters, was held at the Bulwagang Kanlahi, Diwa ng Tarlac Convention Center, and Kaisa Convention Hall in Tarlac City. Attended by 504 registered architects, the assembly aimed “to promote a culture of having a shared purpose in building communication and representation among its districts and chapters to its members and UAP National” according to Assembly Director and UAP Diliman Chapter President, Arch. Achilles Cortes.
It was the first time that the assembly was held in Tarlac. Considered as the most multi-cultural among Central Luzon provinces, Tarlac is home to an indigenous mixture of four major ethno-linguistic groups—it is also the reason why Tarlac is called “The Melting Pot of Central Luzon.” Major architectural development is also currently evident in the province, making it a perfect location for architects to gather and witness it.
For Day 0, the Chapter Presidents’ Assembly and National Board of Directors’ Meeting was held at the Bulwagang Kanlahi. At the same venue on Day 1, the event officially began with the Opening Ceremonies with a Cultural Dance Presentation by Tarlac State University Performing Arts Dance Troupe. The activity was called to order by the Area A Vice President, and a message from UAP National President Richard Garcia followed. Delivering the message of Tarlac Governor Hon. Susan Yap was Arch. Consuelo “Peach” Buencamino.
CPD seminars 1 & 2 were conducted after lunch by Arch. Louwie Gan, with the topic “Sustainability in the Context of Biomimicry Thinking,” and Arch. Marie Stephanie Gilles who talked about “Principles of Liturgical Design and Contemporary Trends in Liturgical Architecture.” After which, the General Assembly was conducted and the Proposed Amendments to the UAP By-Laws were presented by Immediate Past National President Armando Eugene De Guzman. During the Welcome Dinner, delegates were serenaded by the UAP Singers. Commendable Area A members were also given awards and recognition.
On Day 2, a breakfast meeting for the College of Fellows was held, while delegates joined the Tarlac Tours which included the Capas Shrine: Death
March Memorial, New Clark City, and Monasteryo De Tarlac. For an additional fee, others opted to participate in adventure activities at the Tarlac Recreation Center. In the afternoon, “The Proposed Architectural Code of the Philippines: Insights and Highlights” was presented by Past National Presidents Edric Marco Florentino and Ana S. Mangalino-Ling, together with Arch. Rey Gabitan, and Arch. Donato Magcale. A Thanksgiving Mass was held before the Closing Ceremonies. The Fellowship Night followed after, wherein the “Area A’s Got Talent” was held and Arch. Arnold De Vera “Freddy Masonry” emerging as champion.
Last February 17 to 18, 2023, UAP Area B conducted its annual Area B Assembly with Legazpi City in Albay as the host city. The assembly, as expected, was filled with fun, learnings, and adventures as experienced by all 424 participants including the Area B Assembly 2023 Organizing Committee and UAP Executive Committee.
Why Bunyog? We have been tested on our diligence (Sikhay 2020), our strength of character (Grit 2021), and eventually, our ability to adjust to the new normalcy of the new decade of 2020 that made humanity rose to the occasion (Yabong 2022). And it all have been made possible because we are as one in these challenging times. We have become more united not only in strengthening the value of our profession but also in encouraging others to survive and succeed. And because of this
thought, the idea of the Bikol word Bunyog or Pagkakaisa in Filipino has paved its meaning as this year’s assembly’s theme.
The assembly started on February 16, 2023 (Day 0) via the Area B Sports Festival, which was held on various locations: Gregorian Mall Basketball Court for basketball; Sawangan Park for beach volleyball; TOG5 for the badminton activities; and Barry’s Place for the billiards and darts events. On that same day, the Area B Chapter Presidents’ Assembly was held at Proxy by The Oriental Albay Hotel.
The event officially started on February 17, 2023 (Day 1) at the Legazpi City Convention Center. The assembly was graced by UAP National President Richard Garcia, Area B Vice President Delfin Mirabete, Jr., and City Administrator Hon. Carlos “Chito” Ante, who represented the LGU of Legazpi City.
CPD seminars were provided at the assembly with Mr. Bobby Gigantone of the Provincial Tourism Office of Sorsogon, discussing about the effects and influence of cultural heritage tourism on contemporary architecture. On the other hand, Engr. Ruel Ramirez, a Structural Engineering Specialist, shared his knowledge on the hows of saving life and property by having an earthquake-proof structure.
One of the highlights of the assembly was the partnership of UAP Area B with PRC Region V, which extended its service to our profession by providing a mobile PRC renewal service inside the assembly venue. The architects were delighted as they got their professional ID cards renewed in minutes. There were 88 architects who availed of the said assistance.
The talents of Area B architects were also showcased during the “Area B’s Got Talent” segment during the Honor Dinner a.k.a. Mayor’s Night. Seven teams participated, representing each of the five districts of Area B. Arch. Jericho Valencia of Manila Sampaloc Chapter (District B1) was announced as the winner with his Michael Jackson homage dance number. The Honor Dinner was also sponsored by the Legazpi City LGU, represented by Hon. Vice Mayor Oscar Robert Cristobal.
On 18 February 2023 (Day 2), the delegates were able to enjoy the sights of the locality with the Legazpi City tour. Moreover, the hosts organized an ATV adventure to the around 300+ delegates in exploring the wonders of the Mayon Volcano up close.
The last stretch of the assembly was the fellowship night held at the Old Bicol International Airport. Despite the rainy weather, the fun was uninterrupted and was graced by the presence of Gov. Edcel Greco Lagman. The winners of the Area B Sportsfest were also declared through the Committee Chairman Elwright Cabiguen, together with Area B Vice President Delfin Mirabete, Jr., and Assembly Director Arr Jay Joquico.
Bunyog 2.0 concluded after the fellowship and raffle draw by Davies Paints, the Platinum Sponsor of UAP Area B Assembly 2023. Various friendships and memories were created and sure, Bunyog 2.0 has created a special place in the hearts and minds of all Area B delegates.
One of the most sought-after island destinations in the country played host to this year’s UAP Area-C Assembly (UAP ACA). Over 200 Visayan architects set foot in the fine beaches of Boracay last February 10 and 11, 2023 for two days of professionally-enriching seminars and fun-filled camaraderie.
Day 0 was highlighted by the Corporate Social Responsibility activity in partnership with Davies Paints and led by the UAP Aklan Boracay Chapter. Architects visited the San Antonio de Padua Chapel in Malay, Aklan, where they helped in the renovation works and repainted its interior walls. It was a fitting activity of giving back to the local community and leading to the conference activities the next day.
Before the ACA officially kicked off on Day 1, the Area C Chapter Presidents met with UAP National Officers led by National President Richard Garcia. The national leadership touched base with the Visayan chapters as they discussed important updates and organizational concerns from the region. It was also an opportune time to share best practices of the profession for further enrichment of the architecture practice.
The opening ceremonies unveiled at the Newcoast Convention Center in Malay, Aklan as the delegates were able to finally meet their national leaders and other colleagues. The General Assembly, presided by Area C Vice President Ramon Francisco Teruel, tackled on concerns of the general membership as well as served as podium for updates from RA 9266 and proposed revisions of the UAP By-Laws. Immediate UAP Past National President Armando Eugene De Guzman talked about the updates on the By-Laws.
Professional growth was the agenda for Day 2 as two speakers delivered talks on “Bamboo Architecture and Construction” and “Creating Value
Proposition in the Field of Design.” Architect Christian Salandanan of Sangay Architects highlighted the notable attributes of bamboo in designing buildings while Creative Director of CDV Co., Kevin Nieves, discussed about getting most from design propositions.
The two-day assembly was capped off by a beach party at the Newcoast Beachfront, where the Area’s representative to the UAP’s Got Talent contest was selected after an intense musical competition among the four regional districts.
Recognized for active participation were the chapters with the highest delegations: UAP Rajah Humabon (Regional District C1, 14 delegates),
UAP Bacolod (Regional District C2, 20 delegates), UAP Metro Tacloban (Regional District C3, 7 delegates) and the host district’s UAP Iloilo Bahandi (20 delegates).
This year’s UAP ACA was hosted by UAP Regional District C4 led by its then District Director Corina Sibayan.
“Dili malimtan na experience.” This was a prevalent description from fellow delegates when asked to describe their experience on the 2023 UAP Area D Conference, which was held at Dakak Park and Beach Resort in Dapitan City on February 3 to 4, 2023, with the theme, “Damlag: Kaugmaon sa Arkitektong Mindanaoan.”
After almost three years since the official lockdown due to the COVID19 pandemic, the much awaited face-to-face assembly of Mindanaoan architects finally pushed through. It was itself a symbol of hopeful recovery as well as a proverbial ray of sunshine after a series of storms.
Following the Chapter Presidents’ Assembly in the afternoon of Day 1, the opening ceremonies kicked off with a bang as more than 200 guests and delegates were entertained by a cultural music and dance presentation by a talented local dance group. The beautifully decorated grand hall was then graced by national and district officers during the officers and speakers’ procession, where each chapter president proudly carried their chapter banners to the stage. During the opening rites, UAP National President Richard Garcia, delivered his State of the UAP Address after he declared the 2023 CMA “open.”
Day 2 of the conference was a series of highly technical and informative seminars which included “Architects Going Digital” by Arch. Joannes Paula Espino, “The Actions of Today to Frame the Future of Filipino Architecture” by Arch. Buck Sia, “The Future of Practice for the Mindanaoan Architect” by Arch. Minerva Rosel, and my favourite, “360 Systematic Thinking: Core of Sustainability” by Arch. Joan S. De Leon-Tabinas, where she discussed the importance of disaster/flood mitigation and sustainable design amidst climate change in the Philippines. This was then relevant due to the Christmas 2022 flooding in Misamis Occidental and the devastating Typhoon Odette which barrelled through Mindanao in December 2021. The series of seminars concluded with “Presentation of UAP by-Laws” by Past UAP National President Armando Eugene De Guzman.
Following the seminars was the aptly-themed Hawaiian beachside party which started with the welcome address by Dapitan City Vice Mayor Al Sy. The highlight of the night was the “Area D’s Got Talent,” where district representatives showcased their unique talent for a chance to represent Area D to “UAP’s Got Talent” in the upcoming the UAP National Convention. Arch. Jopert Lewis James Subaldo of UAP South Cotabato-Koronadal Chapter emerged victorious with his passionate contemporary dance campaigning for the implementation of RA 9266.
There was no shortage of entertainment as there were exciting raffle prizes, song numbers, and inspirational messages from national officers in between each presentation of talent. After the awards ceremony, the conference was formally closed by National President Garcia followed by a unity dance by all the guests and delegates present.
Congratulations and a job well done to the organizing committee for giving us delegates an informative, enjoyable and “dili malimtan” memorable experience.

When was appointed as Editor-in-Chief of The UAP Post last fiscal year, I readily accepted the assignment but deep inside, I was having second thoughts of whether I could rise to the challenge and perform to expectations. Indeed, the assignment at hand was demanding, having to lead the team behind The UAP Post.
As the official news publication of the United Architects of the Philippines, The UAP Post is already a permanent fixture of the organization. For decades now, it has covered the colorful and dynamic history of the UAP. It has chronicled the hardships and the triumphs the organization has gone through over the years. And being given the job to continue what the illustrious past editors-in-chief of The UAP Post have successfully done before seems a very daunting mission.
After accepting the position last year, the task was a struggle at first but eventually everything came into place and it was smooth sailing thereafter. Through the guidance of the PDC Executive Director and Committee on Publications Chair and the support of the whole editorial team, we were able release issues number one and number two last fiscal year.
For this current year, I was appointed for a second term as Editor-in-Chief of The UAP Post. With lessons learned last fiscal year, I am hoping to encounter less difficulty and problems along the way this time around. I keep my fingers crossed that this will be a hassle-free second stint to be at the helm of UAP’s official publication for its Volume 49.
As we embark on this journey in the new fiscal year, 2023-2024, we view this transition with renewed hope and optimism. Thankfully, the United Architects of the Philippines has already started to experience a semblance of normalcy following a bleak period of turbulence and uncertainty we underwent several months back. The organization was able to bounce back from the horrible effects of the pandemic and has moved forward with much zeal and dynamism.
Indeed, the pandemic has tested our mental and physical well-being, not to mention the opportunities, resources, and loved ones lost. But after all the struggles, we have endured and survived all the hardships and challenges that came our way. Overcoming all these trials, we have come out stronger and tougher than ever.
To be considered to lead The UAP Post editorial team for another consecutive fiscal year is such a great honor indeed. Thank you once again UAP National President Richard Garcia and PDC Executive Director Joan Tabinas for the trust and confidence. Your approving nod gives me more reason to continue to serve
As they say, “when you’re down, there’s nowhere to go but up.” From the setbacks and hardships we faced three years ago, the UAP is now on its path to soar high and reach new heights.
With this fiscal year’s UAP Corporate Theme: “Future Proofing UAP 2.0 – VOICES,” our organization, with the guidance of our National Board of Directors, headed by our esteemed UAP National President Richard Garcia, will surely reach greater heights of success.

Two years ago, a “No to PAREX” paper, which opposed the establishment of the Pasig River Expressway or PAREX, was presented by Arch./EnP.
Sali Kintanar to the UAP Diliman Chapter (UAPD) members during the Pagkinang Talks. In March 2022, when the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) called for position papers from organizations and interested individuals for the PAREX public hearing, UAPD adopted the paper and was submitted to the agency.
Hence, the said paper was the jumping point for the Transportation Infrastructure for Sustainable Development (TISD) Forum organized by the UAP Diliman Chapter held last March 11, 2023 at the Design+Arts Campus Theatre of the De La Salle –College of St. Benilde in Malate, Manila. The event had the following speakers: Arch./EnP. Paulo Alcazaren, Arch. Dominic Galicia, and Arch./EnP. Nathaniel Von Einsiedel. The topics covered the history of the Pasig River and how it became the lifeblood of Metro Manila; the
importance of heritage buildings, civic institutions, and riverside parks along the Pasig River; conservation and adaptive reuse as viable solutions towards improving our built environment within the metropolis; the livability factor of our streets and sidewalks; and most importantly, assessing the incredible impact of infrastructure projects on the metropolis with particular reference to disaster risk management.
Discussions were made more in-depth as reactors Arch. Leonido Gines, Jr., Arch. Malou Gutierrez, and LArch. Vic Dul-loog expounded on the more critical details of the PAREX project, as well as shared their own wisdom and insights to create real value and takeaways for the participants. The audience of design professionals, faculty, and students, enthusiastically participated in the open forum, both online and in person. The student delegates who attended the TISD Forum held their own Summit thereafter with UAPD members invited as speakers and facilitators.
The UAP Bulacan Singkaban conducted a CPD seminar on Cultural Mapping to guide and assist the Local Government of Pulilan, Bulacan in its plan to map and document its built heritage in compliance with the DILG and NCCA Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2021-001 requiring all local government units to submit a local cultural inventory.
In partnership with the Pulilan LGU, headed by its Municipal Mayor Maritz Ochoa-Montejo through its Municipal History Arts Culture and Tourism Office (MHACTO), the seminar was entitled “TalaPAMANA: Mapping and Documenting Built Heritage,” and was held at the Pulilan Central School Training Center last March 25, 2023. It was attended not only by architects, but also by students from Bulacan State University and the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines Pulilan Campus, and representatives from various Barangay units in Pulilan.
The whole day seminar, with CPD accreditation no. ARC-2009-001-623 (5 credit units), was divided to four simplified, yet comprehensive topics designed for the easy comprehension both by technical and non-technical individuals on the basic principles of heritage conservation progressing then to the technical aspects of cultural mapping and documentation in accordance with the guidelines set by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
The resource speakers were all from the Bulacan Singkaban Chapter who were respected academicians and heritage advocates. Arch. Owen Tolentino talked on Cultural Heritage 101 which laid the foundation on the importance of Built Heritage to the community; Arch. Geronimo Lajom on Filipino Architecture 101 to introduce different Architectural style and terms used in vernacular Filipino Architecture to non-technical cultural mappers; Arch. Ma. Teresa Gopez lectured on Identifying and Mapping Built Heritage and Arch. Jane Anne Carlos-Manuel on Documenting Built Heritage to acquaint cultural mappers with the various tools they can use for mapping and documenting built heritage.
In the heart of the rainy season, amidst a gentle downpour, the UAP ZambalesOlongapo Chapter celebrated the 45th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week in collaboration with the City Government of Olongapo. The theme, “Persons with Disabilities Accessibility and Rights: Towards a Sustainable Future where No One is Left Behind,” provided a vital platform for fostering awareness and compassion towards the differently-abled members of our community.
The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Arch. Luz Mangonon-Casipong. She is a highly respected individual who has previously served as the Past District Director of A2b and the Past Chapter President for UAP Zambales Olongapo Chapter. Additionally, she is an advocate for the BP 344, which is also known as the Accessibility Law. Her presence at the event added a sense of wisdom and significance.
Among the UAPZO representatives present were Arch. Shane Anne D. Abad, Chapter President; Arch. Jan Adrian A. Corpuz, Chapter Treasurer; and Arch. Ellise Jae Q. Basa, Director for Renato A. Heray Bayanihang Arkitektura. These architects graced the occasion and played an integral role as judges for the Realistic Nature/Landscape Diorama Competition. Their discerning eyes and keen insights added a touch of professionalism to the event, ensuring a fair and inspiring competition.
Arch. Marisol T. Mandadero, evaluated the “2023 PWD Got Talent” segment, showcasing diverse skills within the differently-abled community.
The Tabaco Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines spearheaded a Community Outreach and Relief Operations Program dubbed as “Tabang sa Tugang: Bulkan Mayon Eruption 2023” last June 15, 2023 at San Jose National High School Evacuation Site in San Jose, Malilipot, Albay.
Mount Mayon started showing signs of restiveness last June when it began spewing debris. On June 8, 2023, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the status of the volcano to Alert Level 3 due to its effusive eruption which could lead to hazardous volcanic activity in the coming weeks. This has forced residents within the danger zone to evacuate.
The UAP Tabaco Chapter, headed by Chapter President Efren Bellen, Jr. immediately organized a relief operations activity in partnership with the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Tactical Operations Group and Davies Paints, in order to reach and extend help to the affected evacuees of the First District of Albay. They were one of the first organizations to actually send relief goods to the evacuees at San Jose National High School Evacuation Site.
Ever since, UAP Tabaco Chapter has been partnering with other organizations, agencies and companies in doing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. This is also one way of introducing UAP and the architecture profession, not just as master builders, but also as community partner and nation builder.
Anewborn chapter oriented towards the rising sun or east, UAP Batangas East Chapter, held its charter presentation and inauguration ceremonies, as well as induction of charter officers, directors and new members, last May 23, 2023 at Artemius Place, Brgy. Sto Niño, Ibaan Batangas, with the theme, S.I.N.A.G. – SILANGAN: ISNILANG ng mga NATATATANGING ARKITEKTONG GABAY sa marangal na propesyon at kahanga-hangang disenyo. This memorable event was also graced by UAP National President Richard M. Garcia, members of the NBD, and Fr. Servando “Vhandy” L. Jr. Sentales as, keynote speaker.
UAP Batangas East is a chapter which is bounded but not limited to the areas of San Jose, Ibaan, Rosario, Padre Garcia, San Juan, and Lobo, is one of the outgrown chapters of their mother, UAP Batangas Chapter. With the rapid growth of professionals and aspiring architects in the industry, UAP Batangas East is the third chapter that was born and formed under UAP Batangas Chapter for a stronger, active, more united group of quality-efficient professionals to primarily
serve best, not only to the chapter and its members but more of the community and industry – UAP Mindoro Chapter as the first in 2016 and UAP Lakeshore Chapter as the second in 2017.
From the rise of this Batangas East Chapter comes bright opportunities of growth, unity, camaraderie, service and professional excellence. It would bridge and unite more architects in the east area having a closer proximity of both their homes and places of work. It would also serve as a great avenue for professional development and assistance most especially to the new sprout architects, to build dreams, create impact, and protect our architectural profession. UAP Batangas East believes that engaging in a smaller scale group would maintain the quality and credibility of each of its members as they all thrive to promote and uplift the profession more on the east side and its bounding regions.
The United Architects of the Philippines – Las Piñas Luntian Chapter conducted a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing last March 18, 2023 at the Congressional Integrated High School (CIHS), Dasmariñas City. The MOA was entered into by and between Congressional Integrated High School and the chapter with the desire to work together for better delivery of quality education through the Adopt-A-School Program. The formalized two-year contract between UAP LPL and CIHS is under the chapter’s BUKLOD Program.
BUKLOD (Bahagian Ukol sa Kasanayan sa Larangan ng mga Obra at Disenyo) is a long term program of UAP Las Piñas Luntian which aims to share the expertise of Luntian architects to our aspirants of the profession to allow them to have the knowledge that they will need for their career in the future.
During the MOA signing, UAP Las Piñas Chapter was represented by Chapter President Jeremy Cresencio along with Arch. Kerlin Ramirez (Charter
Professional Practice Director) and Arch. Nico Mark Silva (USBONG Batch Representative). CIHS was represented by its School Principal, Mr. Ryan Villanueva, and the CIHS Adopt-A-School Coordinator Ms. Noemi Marcera.
Some of the agreed projects and activities stated in the MOA are as follows:
•Conduct of basic architecture course and career pathing workshop to student aspirants from STEM & TVL who would like to know and experience the initial background of the course.
•Provide its professional recommendation towards the Enhancement and physical development of Technical Drafting Laboratory.
•AutoCAD Training needed for Technical Drafting NC Assessment.
•Assess and realign the modules with the industry and TESDA.
This year, the beneficiaries were students of Hen. Pio Del Pilar Elementary School 1 in Makati City. More than 80 students joined in the activity and a joint effort between UAP Makati Greenbelt Chapter volunteers and Hen. Pio Del Pilar Elementary School faculty ensured that the activity would run smoothly. UAP Makati Greenbelt was led by Chapter President Beverly Glory and Chapter Director for Social Responsibility Ricardo Suva Jr. along with other MGBC members–Samuel King Gonzales, Marie Angela Carreon, Charmaine Triumfante, Gerard Villaruel, Peter Brian Creag, and Paulo Polintan. Hen. Pio Del Pilar was led by the Principal, Mr. Welbert Borlado; along with his faculty members– Ms. Elsa Villas, Ms. Rufina Fernandez, Mr. Reginold Morillo, Ms. Margareth S. Abaya, and Ms. Johanna Escano.
would look like through this activity. The older kids were grouped together and were given popsicle sticks and glue for their sculpture making.
For all the children, the second activity was the Art Workshop wherein they colored the same drawing – a two-storey mansion. The individuality of the students could be seen as each of them tackled this on their own ways – some adding small details to the background, others focusing only on what’s already printed on their coloring books. In the end, the activity brought out the creative side of the children to interpret drawings and making it their own.
The Green Pencil Project was the brainchild of UAP Makati Greenbelt Past President Isaiah Israel Susi who envisioned a Philippines who appreciates the significance of architecture. Its mission is to educate the Filipinos about architecture. Aligning this with the mindset that “the pencil as a tool to educate & inspire,” the Green Pencil Project aims to touch the lives of children from different communities.
Before the activities started, the Green Pencil Project kits were distributed to the children which included a Green Pencil Project shirt, coloring book, coloring materials, pencils, ruler, and erasers. Using these simple materials, a fun-filled day of sculpture making, dream house drawing, art workshop and talent showcase awaited the children.
The students’ first activity depended on their class. While the Grades 1-4 students drew their dream house, the Grades 5-6 students created sculptures. The younger children were able to creatively express how their dream house
And last but not least, architects all still love to unwind and relax. So, the last activity was just for the kids to have fun and to showcase their talents in singing and dancing.
To cap off the day, prizes awaited the children who showed the most creativity. In this light, UAP MGBC hopes that the other children will be inspired to explore the possibilities that the Architecture profession holds, which in the end is the overall goal of this activity – using the pencil as a tool to inspire and educate young minds.
Regional District C-1 (UAP RD-C1) closed out another busy yet productive fiscal year last June by hosting an architecture forum in parallel with the face-to-face comeback of the longest running building and construction exposition in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Entitled “Business of Design: How to Scale Up?”, the UAP RD-C1-organized activity was held in the SM Seaside Skyhall as part of the 28th edition of the Construction Show Cebu (CebuCon), which was put off for three years due to the pandemic restrictions. In his opening speech, UAP RD-C1 District Director Buck Richnold Sia underscored the importance of keeping the architecture practice, especially in the regions, to be at the same level or even exceed those from Manila and outside the country.
Invited as panelists were dynamic practitioners from the field of architecture and interior design, architects Jonas Pacifico (Pont Studio) and Daryl
Balmoria-Garcia, (Dream Architects) as well as interior designers Roselane To-Chip (Lina Design Studio) and Jasmine Geson (Sera Interior Design Studio) shared their experiences in the office and challenges in dealing with different clients and projects.
Since the concept of “scaling up” the practice required the right tools needed to determine profitability and cost consumption, architects Kristian Zhen Cruz (Zhen Analytics) and Christian Verano (The Christhetics) also discussed about office operations and digitalization of the workspace.
The event was moderated by past chapter presidents of UAP Sugbu, Elise Demiar and Steffi Sioux Go and attracted not just architects but also architectural apprentices and students. It was organized by UAP District C-1 through UAP Sugbu Chapter, led by Chapter President Keisha Alexis Plaza, in cooperation with L.A. Ducut and Company, the group behind CebuCon.
The Leyte National High School (LNHS), located in Tacloban City, is one of the biggest secondary schools in Eastern Visayas with a student population of around 10,000. In order to further improve the school’s facilities, its administrators saw the need to revive a dead, pocket space between two adjacent buildings that could function as a vibrant usable park or a multi-purpose space.
To realize this objective, school officials tapped the UAP Tacloban Metro Chapter, which conducted a design competition for this purpose. The design challenge was to create a sustainable or low-maintenance, economical and functional pocket park that enriches the academic community. The area could be provided with seating or resting spaces for students and teachers. It could
also be a venue for official multi-purpose gatherings. Moreover, a covered walk could be provided to protect students from the weather or it could be infused with landscape architectural elements.
The design completion was open to architecture students and graduates of Eastern Visayas State University and other architectural schools in Eastern Visayas. Participants could be an individual or a group of not more than five members. The contest was launched on March 17, 2023 and the final judging/awarding ceremony was held on June 23, 2023 at Avenue Hotel in Marasbaras, Tacloban City.
Of the 19 entries received by the chapter, 13 qualified for the final judging. The esteemed panel of judges was composed of Arch. Grace Casal, Arch. Claudette Delos Reyes-De Veyra, and Mr. Aldim Roda, Assistant Principal of LNHS. Topping the design competition was the group, Biomimetic, composed of Hannah Lou Mendoza, Mike Rommel Bachicha, Jay Vincent Alarcon, Charles Matthew Garcia, and Client Aldwin Adao. Other winners were the groups Visioneers and IBA Architects, the second and third prize winners, respectively. They received cash prizes and plaques from the organizers.
Since its chartering in 2019, UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter has continuously upheld its commitment to national building through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects known as Haplos Bahandi. Rooted from an Ilonggo vernacular which means precious touch, Haplos Bahandi has its flagship program known as Dihon, an Ilonggo word which means “to preciously craft, mold, design or create.” Through Dihon, the chapter offers collaboration, design assistance, conceptual process, and consultancy for different LGU’s eco-tourism development.
Last July 14, 2023, UAP Iloilo Bahandi exhibited its CSR projects under Haplos Bahandi - Dihon at SM City Iloilo during the opening of the “A Multi- Stakeholder Forum: Towards A Greener Footprint For Iloilo City,” hosted by the Iloilo City LGU, DENR, and UAP Regional District C4. Past UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter President Nonard Suvisor, was part of the forum’s organizing committee.
The exhibit opened with a ribbon cutting led by DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga (DENR) and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas. Also in attendance were Engr. Liza B. Silerio, Landscape Arch. Paulo Alcazaren, Arch. Michaela Rosette Santos-Tayag, veteran journalist Cess Oreña Drillon, and UAP Bahandi Chapter President Arch. Carlo John Debaja.
The exhibit featured the following five CSR projects namely: Iloilo Tree Park, Katungan Eco-Park, Mt. Manyakiya, Alamadeda de Dingle, and the latest addition, Batad Lake Park.
The Socsksargen Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP Sox) held its annual construction and building materials exhibit, dubbed as CONBEX 2023 with the theme: “Resurgence: Shaping the Future of Construction, A Breakthrough in Platform of Architecture and Building Communities.” The exhibit was held last July 14 to 16, 2023 at the Event Center of SM City General Santos in General Santos City.
The three-day event served as a venue for industry partners to showcase their products and services to stakeholders, as well as end-users in the region. It featured around 52 booths displaying various building materials, tools, and construction equipment.
Gracing the opening of exhibits was Executive Assistant Francis Canlas representing the City Mayor of General Santos, Hon. Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao, who led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was assisted by Chapter President Jane Marie Oponda together with UAP Area D Vice President Jaime Gonzaga, and District D1 Director Jasper Resari.
The exhibit, the only one of its kind in Region 12, was spearheaded by this year’s CONBEX Director, Arch. Daniell Ives Casicas, in collaboration with the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) and United Architects of the Philippines Graduate Auxiliary (UAPGA) of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU).
The event was extra special with Arch. Royal Pineda’s congratulatory video greeting. Pineda, founder and lead architect of Royal Pineda+, also conveyed in his short inspirational message that architects, builders, industry partners, and allied professionals must take part in “finding and defining truly Filipino architecture by collaborating to make our country better.” He ended
This fiscal year, the UAP launched “NGITI para sa Eskwelahang Munti” as the theme of the Renato A. Heray – Bayanihang Arkitektura. Its objective is to enjoin chapters to focus on the needs of public elementary schools within their proximity. Suggested activities include greening programs, donation of school bags, distribution of hygiene kits, feeding programs, and shouldering of the day-to-day baon of selected pupils.
In response to this call, UAP North Davao Chapter conducted a donation drive and feeding program for kindergarten learners, aged 4 to 5 years old of Maco Central Elementary School in Maco, Davao de Oro on May 19, 2023. In coordination with the School Principal, Mr. Rene Obeza, the architects distributed hygiene kits to 25 children. The kit contained a toothbrush,
his greeting with the quote, “Let’s all work together as part of the Modern Bayanihan; let’s put our efforts together and define what is the Modern Philippines.”
toothpaste, bath soap, alcohol, and tissue. Aside from the individual donations to each learner, UAP North Davao also turned over to the school two gallons of alcohol, a gallon of chlorine, two kilos of powder detergent and two large bottles of handwash liquid soap.
After distributing the hygiene kits, the architects served the pupils with a hearty snack consisting of chicken sotanghon, loaf bread, and fruit juice. According to Obenza:“The children showed keen interest to the feeding program and the giving of hygiene kits. They were very happy to receive them.”
At the conclusion of the activity, the School Principal showed his gratitude to the architects: “The outreach program conducted by UAP North Davao is worth emulating. The group was able to provide valuable support to the kindergarten learners of the school. The program helped to raise awareness about the importance of good hygiene practices. The activity provided support and assistance to the under-privileged learners and gave significant impact on the lives of those you serve.”
The CDO Bay Area Chapter’s Candy (6th) Anniversary Celebration last April 15, 2023, was an event filled with educational opportunities, product presentations, and a bountiful feast. The celebration, held at the De Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, began with a free self-directed CPD seminar titled “Gabaldon Restoration: A Collaboration of DedEd-UAP CDO Bay Area Chapter and USTP Activity,” which delved into the importance of architectural heritage conservation. This was followed by two product presentations by the event’s sponsors, Polylite Industrial Corp., Daikin Philippines, and Davies Paints.
The event was opened by Arch. Clark Ian Maestrado, then Chapter President, who welcomed everyone to the first in-person CDO Bay Area Chapter Anniversary Celebration after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. The CPD seminar was the highlight of the celebration. The keynote speaker, Arch. Vergiller Gomez, the current chapter auditor, and currently DepEd’s Senior Technical Assistant II, discussed the significance of conserving the Gabaldon school buildings in Mindanao. Gomez also explained the significance of preserving heritage buildings, monuments, and other structures with significant cultural, historical, or aesthetic value, as well as the policies and guidelines governing their protection. Moreover, he presented some of his contributions to restoring Gabaldon Schoolhouses in Mindanao such as the Mansabay Alto Integrated School and Baliangao Central Elementary School.
The celebration concluded with a celebratory dinner and the members had the opportunity to build relationships with other industry professionals and commemorate the accomplishments of the CDO Bay Area Chapter over the past six years. Arch. Romel Eltanal, Past District D3 Director delivered the words
of gratitude, while Past Chapter President Jiffer John Taala officially closed the program. The CDO Bay Area Chapter’s Candy Anniversary was a great success and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Chapter’s officers and members.
Jim is an architect and urban designer who also proudly serves as the Deputy Chair of the prestigious PDC (Professional Development Committee) and holds the position of Co-Chair for the Committee on Publications. These roles allow him to foster the growth and excellence of architects while also promoting the dissemination of knowledge within the field. In his journey, he has discovered the profound interconnection between architecture and writing. The built environment, a testament to human creativity and ingenuity, has a powerful story to tell. Writing serves as the bridge between these architectural marvels and the wider world, translating design concepts, cultural significance, and functional innovations into words that can inspire, educate, and spark dialogue. This synergy between architecture and writing is where his passion thrives, where architects should not only craft beautiful spaces but also articulate their profound impact on society.
Introducing John Lemuel G. Llacuna, an individual who seamlessly bridges the worlds of architecture and writing. As the Committee Co-Chairperson of UAP Publications and a dedicated Faculty Member at the National University College of Architecture, John intertwines his passion for design with the art of expression. Viewing architecture and writing as interconnected forms of art, he draws inspiration from the symmetry between structures and words. During his formative years, John nurtured his talent by crafting poems and short stories, a journey that has solidified his belief in a destined future as a writer.
