very first Monday of October is the World Architecture Day (WAD). This is celebrated in different countries around the world to show the importance of architecture. The UIA theme for this year is “Architecture for Resilient Communities” from the 2023 World Habitat Day theme: “Resilient urban economies: cities as drivers of growth and recovery.” With this year’s theme, the UIA seeks to place emphasis on the capability of architects and architecture in creating a sustainable community life between urban and rural areas in all countries. The United Architects of the Philippines celebrated the World Architecture Day last October 2, 2023 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City. The UAP WAD Committee started the event with a flag rising ceremony, followed by the opening program, and an Open House that featured the recent developments of the organization. The morning event was attended by UAP National President Richard Garcia, WAD Chairperson Maria Alora Angeles and committee members, and Commission on Government and External Affairs Executive Director Mary Kristine Segovia. Also present were members of the UAP, UAPGA,
and UAPSA; partners in the industry, like Davies Paints, Holcim, and Crown Pipes representatives; and UAP staff. The event showcased the exhibit of the recently concluded ARCASIA Awards for Architecture 2023 (AAA) of the 20th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA20) which the Philippines hosted in Boracay. The exhibit was organized by the Commission on Professional Practice headed by Executive Director Cecilia Cayman-Gamana and Deputy Executive Director/Co-chair of Competitions Arnold San Sebastian. The Committee on Resilient Architects headed by Arch. Geomilie TumamaoGuittap, likewise exhibited its works emphasizing sustainable and resiliency in design. Different committees of the UAP also launched their projects during WAD celebration. First was the relaunching of the UAP Website, headed by Arch. Bonstara Remo of South Triangle Chapter. Next, Chairperson Arch. Junie CamuAngelo of the UAP Headquarters Reimagined Project had a contract signing with various industry partners for the makeover of the UAP HQ. Last, UAP Center for

The Commission on Government and External Affairs Executive Director Mary Kristine Segovia and World Architecture Day Committee Chairperson Maria Alora Angeles organized a CPD hybrid seminar, entitled: “Sustainable Horizons: Architectural Innovations for a Resilient Future.” Invited speakers were Arch. Ronnie Yumang, who discussed about “Regenerative Architecture: Crafting Eco-Symbiosis in Design” and Arch. Robert Benedict Hermoso for “Sustainable Reconstruction of Heritage Buildings: Renewing Legacy.” The hybrid seminar was a success as it was attended by 560 members of the organization all around the globe as they gained new knowledge on sustainability and resiliency.

ARCASIA Student Jamboree By Marian Eileen Florentino-Marudo, FUAP, PIID
T
he ARCASIA Student Jamboree is a biennial event that is held in parallel with ARCASIA’s Asian Congress of Architects (ACA). This year, the Student Jamboree was held in Boracay on September 18 to 22, 2023. The primary goal of the event is to promote awareness among Asian architectural students, eliciting their support and future participation in the organization. Further, it aims to bring together students and mentors from across the region to connect, collaborate, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing the architecture community. The Jamboree offers a range of activities and programs designed to facilitate learning, networking, and community building. These include thematic workshops, lectures, recreational activities, and cultural exchanges. The event provides a platform for students to express themselves, exchange ideas, and learn from experienced professionals in the field. The Jamboree also offers opportunities for participants to explore the host country’s culture and architecture, fostering a deeper appreciation of the region’s diverse heritage. Consistent with this year’s objective of establishing lasting relationships and not just acquaintances, instead of starting the event in the usual formal ceremonies, the organizers prepared group activities which enabled attendees to meet and know coparticipants from other countries. These activities enabled the students to immediately gain friends even before the program formally started. This made each delegate enjoy the weeklong

Jamboree with friends and peers from different nationalities and cultures all throughout the event. The formal opening ceremonies of the Jamboree was held a day after the ACA Congress Opening, which introduced the ACA 20 organizers, namely: ARCASIA Past President Arch. Yolanda Reyes, past and current Vice Presidents for Zone B Arch. Edric Marco Florentino and Arch. Ana Mangalino-Ling, and ACA 20 Convenor Arch. Joey Manalad and his deputies, Arch. Tony Valdez and Arch. Reymark Gardiola, together with the Jamboree Convenor Arch. Marian Eileen Florentino-Marudo and Arch. Joy Villar as Deputy Convenor. The third day of the event featured the Jamboree talks. In line with this year’s theme “Paghahabi: Weaving a Future-Ready Environment,” speakers came from different countries or institutions who shared their wisdom to the delegates. Resource speakers included Arch. Kate Schwensenn from Clemson University School of Architecture, USA; Arch. Andras Krizhan, President of the Hungarian Architects; Arch. Jose Luis Cortes, Immediate Past President of the International Union of Architects; Arch. Joan Tabinas, Executive Director of the UAP Professional Development Commission; Arch. Datuk P. Kasi, Past President of the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM); and Ms. Stephanie Frogoso from the Philippines. On the fourth day of the event, the delegates then faced physical challenges during the “Ultimate Race” wherein they were grouped
into mixed teams and raced to different pitstops around Boracay. This activity further strengthened the camaraderie among delegates as they enjoyed the beauty of one of the world’s toprated beaches. At the closing of the Jamboree came the Fellowship Night. Delegates had one last opportunity to be with new friends and future colleagues as they dined, partied, and enjoyed the resort’s swimming pool and let the last night of the Jamboree be one of most memorable part of the international gathering. Professionals do need to continuously learn and improve oneself and that is the same with students. It is always good to mix learning with having fun, while gaining new friends and further expanding one’s circle extending to other countries and not just one’s own. One thing is for sure, the next ACA and its Student Jamboree will definitely be a much awaited event for both architects, and future architects of the Asian region.

The COF’s Balik-Tanaw 2023 Honorees By Ericson P. Europa, FUAP, PIEP

he UAP College of Fellows (COF) honored six of its members with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Balik-Tanaw 2023 held on October 7, 2023 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City. The recognition was bestowed upon the honorees for their lifelong contributions to the United Architects of the Philippines and for the individual roles they played and continue to play as lifetime achievers. Every year, the award is presented by the COF to its deserving members through the annual Balik-Tanaw Program. The recognition is a brainchild of Arch. Maria Elena C. Cayanan, Past Chancellor of the COF. It started as the culminating activity of the UAP in observance of World Architecture Day (WAD) in October 2006. Since then, it has become a traditional part of the COF’s WAD celebration every October of each year. The six distinguished architects are: Emmanuel Cuntapay (UAP Cagayan Valley Chapter), Antonio Sangrador (UAP Iloilo-Marikudo Chapter), Eusthenes Lu (UAP Manila-Metro Chapter), Avelino Pastor (UAP Leyte West Chapter), Vicente Duran
(UAP Manila Sampaloc), and Alexander Balce (UAP Maharlika Chapter). Architect Cuntapay served as the 13th National President of UAP, whose administration made constant efforts towards the advancement of the profession, the well-being of the professional, and the growth of the professional organization. Architect Sangrador is the Charter President of the Iloilo-Marikudo Chapter and later as its Chapter President from 1997 to 1999. He helped establish the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council and served as its chairman. A founding chapter officer of UAP Manila-Metro, Architect Lu also served as Chapter Vice-President for Programs from 1985 to 1986. He was part of the Metro 14k group that solicited funds for the purchase of the lot where the UAP National Headquarters now stands. Architect Pastor, together with six other architects, led in the chartering of the UAP Leyte Samar chapter in 1978. In 2000, he was awarded as the first architect of Palompon, Leyte and as an outstanding alumnus of the Northern Leyte College.
Architect Duran has celebrated seventy years of unwavering passion for design and still continues his private practice. He is the founder and first Chapter President of UAP Manila Sampaloc Chapter and was conferred as Member Emeritus of the UAP for his 35 years of remarkable service to the organization. A hospital architect specialist, Architect Balce has designed numerous healthcare facilities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Parallel to the medical practitioners’ objectives, he aims to save lives through his works. These six architects have proven themselves to be among the crème de la crème of the UAP. While being accepted in the College of Fellows is already an exceptional achievement, to be selected among the few is all the more remarkable. Indeed, this year’s awardees definitely serve as inspirations for other architects to emulate and to be motivated to strive to become lifetime achievers themselves.

SAF Launches Documentary Competition By Niña Reanne G. Maiquez, UAP

he UAP Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino (SAF) launched “A+D 2.0: Architectural Documentary Competition 2023” on October 2, 2023 at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City.
The contest, which seeks to promote the creative documentation of existing buildings in the country, bannered the theme, “Legacy of the Past: Modern Architecture in Historical Context.” This theme examines adaptive reuse, contemporary interventions in historical sites, and the preservation of cultural heritage through innovative design. During the launch, a film showing was held featuring a video documentary of last year’s video documentary entries. The first iteration of the architectural documentary film festival was organized by immediate past Executive Director Lorelei De Viana as part of the celebration of the National Architecture Week 2022 and the 1st Philippine Architecture Festival. Area A News MoTour: The Tarlac Architectural Heritage Ride By Jenny M. Estrada, UAP
In celebration of History Month, UAP Tarlac Chapter conducted the first “MoTour: Tarlac Architectural Heritage Ride” on August 13, 2023. Architects on two wheels explored into the exhilarating world of motorcycle adventures and travelled through the annals of Tarlac’s rich history. UAP Tarlac Chapter riders, together with Tarlac State University College of Architecture and Fine Arts students, met up at Nay’s House in Tarlac City, a structure which is reminiscent of the early 20th century post-colonial style featuring delicate Art Deco elements and has been tastefully transformed into an inviting dining salon. From there, the riders leisurely started the cruise through the iconic landmarks of Tarlac. They visited different historical buildings, such as the Diwa ng Tarlac Convention Center, the Tarlac Capitol Building, and the Museo ng Probinsya ng Tarlac. Each stop offered a captivating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Tarlac’s past. In awe of the Tarlac Regional Trial Court Building’s architectural marvels, they also found themselves captivated by the peaceful beauty of Maria Cristina
Park. The journey through Tarlac also led to the Tarlac National High School Main Campus, and to the legendary old Tarlac City theaters—Aurora, PET, Art, Oro, and Alice Theaters—each with its own tale to tell. Next stop, the magnificent San Sebastian Cathedral and the deeply meaningful Corazon Aquino Monument, profoundly moved the riders because of their majestic grandeur and rich historical significance. In the reverent culmination of the expedition, they respectfully rendered homage at the esteemed premises of the Capas National Shrine. This hallowed edifice stands as a poignant testament to the immeasurable sacrifices rendered by our valiant heroes. At the conclusion of the momentous ride, UAP Tarlac Chapter will always remember that the province’s heritage lives on in these majestic structures. The riders strive to continue commemorating and safeguarding this legacy, guaranteeing that the reverberations of the collective history endure for future generations.

UAP Bulacan Singkaban Steps up Bamboo Advocacy during Philippine Bamboo Month By Owen Tolentino, UAP
UAP chapters, namely UAP San Juan-Mandaluyong, UAP Del Pilar-Bulacan and UAP Bulacan, as well as the Bulacan Section of the Philippine Institute of Architects in a bid to promote the crucial role of bamboo in mitigating climate change, preventing soil erosion, filtering pollutants, and serving as a sustainable source of materials for various industries. To conclude the Philippine Bamboo Month, UAP Bulacan Singkaban Chapter partnered with the UAP Bamboo Project Special Committee and UAP San JuanMandaluyong Chapter in holding a Bamboo Advocacy CPD Webinar on September 30, 2023. This informative event, conducted via Zoom, was entitled “Bamboo Reboot: Reimagining Bamboo Advocacy for Sustainable Buildings and Communities” and was accredited with 3.5 credit units under CPD accreditation no. ARC-200901-794. Happy and content participants from different groups and UAP Chapters after the bamboo planting for a good cause. Being a chapter named after a local artistic craft of bamboo gateway arches found in local fiesta celebrations in the province of Bulacan, UAP Bulacan Singkaban celebrated the month of September as Philippine Bamboo Month by partnering with various groups who share the same passion and advocacy, and lining up two remarkable activities to promote the importance and potential of bamboo as a sustainable solution to various environmental, economic, and social challenges our planet experiences. September was officially designated as Philippine Bamboo Month through Proclamation No. 1401, signed by former President, Rodrigo Duterte. The proclamation’s intent was to “instill national consciousness” on the significance of the bamboo plant among Filipinos.
It was kicked off by planting 120 bamboo seedlings along the picturesque Angat River in Longos, Pulilan, Bulacan on September 23, 2023. Despite an early morning rain shower, this did not deter the enthusiastic participants from actively engaging in this humble activity. This endeavor aimed to enhance the natural beauty of the community and contribute to our planet’s well-being, moving us closer to a greener and healthier world. This was in partnership with the Municipality of Pulilan, Bulacan, through its Municipal History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (MHACTO) and its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO). UAP Bulacan Singkaban also collaborated with UAP Bamboo Project Special Committee, UAP Regional District A2a, and other

A
n ARC for WAD! A shortened version of “Architecture for Resilient Communities for World Architecture Day 2023,” that was the theme of UAP Gulis Capampangan’s celebration of this year’s World Architecture Day at the Vista Mall Pampanga in San Fernando, Pampanga on October 4, 2023. Creating a hall of forum and exhibit, the chapter organized several activities aligned with the said theme. One of these was assigning an architect to an aspiring architect, thus arranging a thesis consultancy not just for 5th year Architecture students but also for students who are in the early stage of studying architecture, believing that architecture should enrich its own internal community, especially the aspirants in order to attain resiliency for the profession. To successfully assemble such concept, the chapter utilized its resources by gathering chapter members who are in the academe, namely: Chapter Treasurer Ana Pamela Aldana, Chapter BOD for Professional Development Ed Christopher David, and Chapter Auditor Jester Kim Catu. UAP Gulis Capampangan Chapter also catered to numerous Architecture students of different college levels coming from various universities, architects, and other allied professionals during the Community Resiliency Talk, led by the Chapter President Aladdin Akil. To further exemplify the profession, a collection of architectural 3D puzzles owned by Chapter Secretary Thea Louise Villanueva were exhibited. This promoted visual interaction, not just with related professionals, but also with various people from all walks of life who were in the area.

he World Risk Report 2023 reveals that the Philippines has the highest risk from natural events and climate change impacts worldwide. Beyond the negative effects on the country’s vulnerable communities due to recurring extreme weather conditions, hydrologic variability complicates water resource management as an everyday reality. Among the number of strategic challenges to address the issues is institutional fragmentation.

DENR Secretary Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga provided a keynote address delivered by Engr. Marcelino Rivera, Chief of Environmental Quality Management Division. NEDA Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Development Roderick Planta talked about the current conditions and
key elements of the Philippine Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan. Governor Eugenio Lacson of Negros Occidental communicated issues and challenges at the provincial level, while scientist Rex Victor Cruz spoke on the importance of watersheds and watershed management. As UAP Diliman Chapter President Rola Vizmonte underscores: “Addressing the impacts and the solutions to mitigate climate change does not come from one person, one organization. It is a collective effort by all. Our hope is: as professionals, we all learn to live responsibly and work fervently with the purpose of saving our natural environment and resources as we learn to build better.”

he United Architects of the Philippines Cabalen-Pampanga Chapter’s opening salvo for the World Architecture Day 2023 celebration was held at Robinsons Starmills Pampanga, on October 9 and 10, 2023, with the theme: “Architecture for Resilient Communities.” In partnership with the MegaFest Oktoberfest 2023 event, the UAP Cabalen-Pampanga Chapter hosted a Mural Painting Competition with the theme: “Celebrating Resiliency through Architecture.” Participated in by students from different architectural schools in Pampanga, this event was in collaboration with Lifeworks Concepts and Events, Robinsons Malls, Edios Architecture and Design, United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary - University of the Assumption Chapter (UAPSA-UA), A-Team UA Architecture, Architecture Association of

After the acknowledgement of guests, organizers, industry partners, and participants by Chapter Secretary Jaron Arvin Bautista, Arch. Jay Santos, the WAD 2023 Committee Chairperson of UAP Cabalen, discussed the contest rules and mechanics.

Bacacay, Albay. Coron-Coron Beach is part of Bacacay’s coastline called Panarayon which is known for its fine black volcanic sand. The black sand beach is also the reason why tourists dub Bacacay as the “Black Boracay of Albay”. The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bacacay initiated a coastal cleanup activity to preserve and maintain the cleanliness of their black sand beaches. The activity was conducted in line with the celebration of the Karagumoy Festival in Bacacay, Albay. This was participated by various local organizations in Albay including the UAP Tabaco Chapter. UAP Bukidnon Kaamulan members with the DILG-10 conference team and accredited CSO partners. In line with the 2023 Local Government Code Month and Philippine Local Governance Forum (PLGF) celebration, United Architects of the Philippines Bukidnon Kaamulan Chapter, as an accredited civil society organization (CSO) of the City of Malaybalay since October 2022, was invited to participate in the “CSO Conference: Partners in DILG PPAs” last October 27, 2023 held at VIP Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Together with other local government units, the DILG aimed to have more partners to engage and participate in consultation for constitutional reform, and to contribute to the implementation of projects, advocate for the passage of local ordinances, and most especially to support the Philippine Development Plan. For this matter, the UAP Bukidnon Kaamulan Chapter, with its expertise
and professionalism, is looking forward to participating and being involved in policy dialogues in local governance, law and order, and public safety. It also commits to conduct researches, surveys, studies, and assessments to whichever it may help to expand the impact of the organization’s boundaries. Currently, she is the appointed auditor and has been its creative director for two fiscal years. She was also appointed as the Information & Communications Manager of the 47th National Convention. Presently, she is taking her post-graduate diploma at the University of the Philippines-Diliman on urban and regional planning. She juggles her work simultaneously as an architect (team leader) and as an elected government official. She has a background in publications during her college years. She was a layout artist in their university’s official publication organization and a parttime book illustrator. She loves to play computer games, and she has her streaming page. She also loves to sing Disney or Broadway songs. In her free time, she loves to watch Korean dramas. She has six dogs. Game of Thrones and The Witcher are her favorite TV series.

Karl Aries Emerson Cabilao is an architect and a faculty member at the University of San Carlos (USC) School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Design, where he teaches History of Architecture, Theory of Architecture and Architectural Design subjects. He completed his Master in Architecture degree major in Urban Design in USC. He is also a contributing writer for SunStar Cebu, where he usually writes articles on architecture and design for its lifestyle pages. As member and past president of the UAP Sugbu Chapter, he has served in various capacities in the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) both on chapter and national level since 2004. He was elevated to the prestigious UAP College of Fellows for notable contributions in architecture education and outstanding service to the professional organization in 2017.
AJ or “Mimi” is an active officer of the UAP CDO Bay Area Chapter and an architect in the academe based in Cagayan de Oro city. In her teenage years, a German translation of Tadao Ando’s sketchbook sparked her fascination and enthusiasm for architecture. Since then, she has obtained a Master of Architecture degree with a concentration in Architectural Science by researching and gaining knowledge of design and other architectural procedures. She is currently an instructor at the University of Science and Technology of the Southern Philippines (USTP) in Cagayan de Oro, where she oversees the History and Theory of Architecture cluster in the Department of Architecture for the Undergraduate Program Bachelor of Science in Architecture.
