2 UNITED ARCHITECTS OF THE PHILIPPINES

UAP Post: A Celebration

Time, indeed, flies so fast. It seemed it was like yesterday when we faced the trials of the pandemic that changed our lives. We had to deal with the struggles that came with it and had to face the challenge to provide genuine service to our UAP community and be a beacon of light for the entire architecture profession.

Despite the drawback, we overcame and emerged triumphant because our dedication is more robust than ever. Even when navigating in an ocean of uncertainties leading toward the new normal way of living, we embraced a world of changes as a united organization because we know these are all for the best.

We welcomed the fiscal year 2022-2023 with a renewed sense of commitment and an even grander vision for success to futureproof the UAP and the profession.

We laid our plans in place and began working towards our goal. The fiscal year is the start of reaching out to our members beyond the virtual set-up. One of our directions for the fiscal year is to start incorporating face-to-face activities into our calendar while underscoring the importance of observing austere measures.

We held general assemblies and membership meetings for our different chapters, making our presence felt in other regions and ensuring that all voices will be heard. The physical presence of every member, along with their happy and joyful faces, is enough of a reward for all the hard work of our UAP officers, who painstakingly prepared for each activity with laser-like focus and meticulous care. It is an indication that we are on the right path.

True enough, our hard work paid off greatly. The past six months have been filled with tremendous accomplishments that we genuinely take pride in it as a community.

October last year, we successfully conducted the National Conference of Architects (NCA) 2022 in Bohol with the theme “PAYAGPAG”. The beautiful Bohol island served as a majestic setting for the two-day gathering with our members joining us from different parts of the country. The positive outcome of this activity proved that we are ready to take flight and soar high.

Our World Architecture Day activities also provided a great venue to feature our member’s extraordinary talent in a global celebration while highlighting opportunities for learning and enhancing each member’s potential.

Just last December, we witnessed the National Architecture Week (NAW) and the launching of the first Philippine Architecture Festival where we saw a diversified and more inclusive celebration that is way beyond what we have done in the past. We were able to showcase our profession through different NAW activities in various parts of the country, which intensified the promotion of what we can offer to the nation. From street dancing to week-long exhibits to lectures from international speakers, set to an overall festive occasion, the celebration was more meaningful and more memorable to our members and partners.

We have also relaunched our #GET AN ARCHITECT campaign slogan with a Multilingual Filipino adaptation of the current campaign structure.

Being able to conduct these activities effectively is already a remarkable feat. Our face-to-face activities brought many fond memories with our

old comrades and created opportunities for meeting new ones whom we have only met online for years.

More importantly, we were able to show the world how we can efficaciously hold these activities, showcasing our best as the IAPOA and as a strong community of Filipino architects ready to take on the world.

Through these meaningful events, we have already proven how UAP has always been, and will continuously be, a strong force in shaping the landscape of the profession in the Philippines and as an esteemed organization that leads in the promotion and advancement of our domain.

We have proven that we can conquer the most arduous task, even in the face of changes and trials. That is what success is made of, and we take pride that despite dealing with many setbacks along the way, we made it.

While we look back on the months that led us here, let us remember to keep the momentum going. We cannot afford to let our guard down, for all of these are just the beginning.

I want to thank all your efforts in making all these achievements, for it is in your actions and contributions, whether small or big, that we are celebrating now.

Our dear chapters and districts, thank you for your never-ending support to the National Board.

And lastly, to our beloved members, we thank you for your active participation, wherever you may be. We are always grateful for the trust and confidence you give to our leaders, and we assure you that you will only receive the unfailing and genuine service you deserve.

Together, let us achieve all the plans we laid out until the end of our term. We had a great start, and I am confident we will continue this drive until we reach the finish line.

For now, let us dedicate this time to celebrate. All our feat is a testament that it is possible to aim high and that it is possible to reach even the most unachievable, unattainable feat.

Let us all recognize the hard work and devotion each of us has contributed. Celebration is equally important as working towards clinching the goal.

Here is to the success we made and the victories we are about to conquer for the rest of the Fiscal Year.

Editor’s Notes The Celebration

After experiencing the effects of the pandemic, the United Architects of the Philippines started FY 2022-2023 full of anxiety and apprehension and unsure of what the coming days would bring. Fortunately, the last seven months has been a breakthrough period for our organization. From the setbacks it went through during the height of the pandemic, the UAP started to pick up the pieces and slowly we got ourselves back on our feet again.

We have already started conducting several face-to-face activities, including the conduct of general membership meetings of the different chapters, the resumption of many CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) projects, the holding of in-person induction ceremonies, and not to mention the successful staging of PAYAGPAG - National Conference of Architects 2022 in Bohol. With these accomplishments, indeed, we have made significant headway thus far.

Indeed, our patience and resilience during the past couple of years have finally paid off. The aforementioned successful undertakings have paved the way for UAP to acknowledge our gains. And what a

fitting opportunity to do this than during the two observances the UAP marks every year: the World Architecture Day (WAD) and the National Architecture Week (NAW).

The WAD is celebrated every first Monday of October to recognize the architects’ commitment to our societies, our ecosystems, and our cities. On the other hand, the NAW is observed every second week of December to acknowledge the Filipino architects’ invaluable contribution towards planned urban growth, environmental planning, and for over-all social planning.

But on top of recognizing the architects’ role in ensuring the wellbeing of our society and the environment, these two occasions were very timely for us to also celebrate the success we have attained right now as compared to the gloom and negativity we experienced a few years back. May we sustain this victory as we move forward towards a future-proofing UAP.

UAP Turns over APEC Coffee Table Book to PRC

The first publication featuring the architects of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was formally turned over to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) by the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) on November 29, 2022. Among the UAP representatives were UAP National President Richard M. Garcia, and its publication chairman and editorin-chief, Arch. Felicisimo A. Tejuco, Jr. of the UST College of Architecture.

Through the collaboration of the PRC and UAP, the first APEC Architect Coffee Table Book was launched in October 2021 as one of the highlights of the 9th

APEC Architect Central Council Meeting. Spearheaded by Hon. Yolanda D. Reyes, Chairman of the APEC Architects Registry Central Council and past PRC Commissioner, the publication showcased the pride and milestones of the participating economies in implementing the APEC Architect Project. A book chapter was devoted to each participating economy and the notable works of their respective APEC architects. Aside from Commissioner Reyes, other past UAP National Presidents, Arch. Medeliano T. Roldan and Arch. Prosperidad C. Luis, served as consultants and advisers.

During the turnover, the PRC was represented by Hon. Charito A. Zamora (Chairperson); Hon. Jose Y. Cueto, Jr. and Hon. Erwin M. Enad (Commissioners); Hon. Robert Sac (Chairman), Hon. Robert Mirafuente, and Hon. Corazon Tandoc (Members) of the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture; and Atty. Melisa Jane B. Comafay, (Director) of the International Affairs Office.

4 UAP Members Conferred as ASEAN Architects

Four architects were conferred as Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Architects or AA on November 29, 2022 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex in Pasay City. They are Architects Christian F. Guerrero of UAP Las Pinas Chapter, Carlo Chinolli Syquio G. Joson and Henry Steve R. Olonan of UAP Quezon City Chapter, and Felicisimo A. Tejuco, Jr. of UAP Kalayaan 100 Chapter.

Guerrero has been recognized for his specialization in Green Architecture and car dealership facility. His more than three decades of experience also includes offices

and institutions, mixed use facilities, and housing. Joson, who is based in Singapore, specializes in facade-retail and commercial design with fifteen years of experience in the Asia-Pacific region, while Olonan’s field of specialization is government facilities. Tejuco has specialized on master planning, specifically heritage and tourism sites. He has also presented and published research papers on Second World War studies.

With the conferment of the four, the ASEAN Architects of the Philippines have now totaled to 143.

The event was facilitated and witnessed by officials of the ASEAN Monitoring Committee on Architectural Services of the Philippines (AMCASP), namely: Hon. Charito Zamora, Chairwoman of the Professional Regulatory Commission; Arch. Robert Sac, Arch. Robert Mirafuente and Arch. Corazon F. Tandoc of the Professional Regulation of the Board of Architecture; and Arch. Richard M. Garcia, National President of the United Architects of the Philippines.

Spotlight on the Lifetime Achievers: The UAP College of Fellows

Balik-Tanaw 2022

Oneshould not rest on their laurels. This is often a reminder to everyone who achieved note-worthy works and gestures.

In the UAP, when a member is bestowed the title “Fellow” after being nominated by his peers for notable contributions to the architecture profession and the professional organization, they are often reminded that such title should not be made as the terminus of continuing the pursuit for excellence. The annual Balik-Tanaw of the UAP College of Fellows (COF) pays tribute to the admirable architects in recognition of their lifelong contributions.

For the third straight year, the Balik Tanaw was held via the Zoom online platform last October 1, 2022 with UAP Fellows, some members of the UAP National Board headed by National President Richard Garcia, and loved ones

of the honorees, as proud witnesses. This followed the early morning monthly general membership meeting of the UAP COF, led by Chancellor Maria Nina Arce. The nine “gems” of UAP, who were honoured during the event, were:

1) Nicolas Balce (UAP-Manila Maharlika)

2) Felino Coloma (UAP-Manila Maharlika)

3) Rolando Roy Cordero (UAP-Camanava Hilaga)

4) Amado De Jesus, Jr. (UAP-Manila Maharlika)

5) Ranulfo Imperial (UAP-Legazpi)

6) Reynaldo Inovero (UAP-Manila Maynilad)

7) Philip Recto (UAP-Makati Chapter, Likha Awardee)

8) Simeon Tan (UAP-Manila Metro)

9) Amado Tandoc, Jr. (UAP-Marikina Valley)

Since 2006, the UAP COF has been holding this tribute event to illustrious COF members, who continue to stamp their marks in their respective fields of expertise. Through the efforts of Past UAP COF Chancellor Maria Elena Cayanan, the event became a relevant part of the World Architecture Day celebration every October up until the present.

For the profession to thrive, each of us needs to continue learning and keep pace with the innovations in the practice. But more importantly, we must also acknowledge wisdom from those who came before us and get inspiration from those who have made remarkable contributions to architecture in the past and into the future. Hats off to the Balik Tanaw awardees of 2022!

COF Tours National Museum

The UAP College of Fellows (COF) started the brand new year with a bang. In conjunction with its January 2023 General Membership Meeting held last January 7, 2023, the COF members had an opportunity to visit and appreciate the spectacular design, as well as the remarkable exhibits, of the National Museum of Natural History, located at the Agrifina Circle in Ermita, Manila.

The educational tour started at 9:30 in the morning. All thirty-seven fellows in attendance were excited to explore the magnificence of the architecture of the museum building and its 12 permanent exhibitions that feature the rich biological and geological diversity of the country. Built in 1940 and rebuilt in 1949 after the war, this neo-classical landmark was designed by renowned Filipino architect, Pablo Antonio, who also designed the Manila City Hall.

The museum building, formerly housing the Department of Agriculture and Department of Tourism offices, is a pentagon-shaped structure with a focal point located right at its center. This is the famous “Tree of Life.” Called as such for its semblance of a huge tree, it is the museum’s significant feature that represents the ecosystems of the Philippines.

After the amazing tour, the regular monthly meeting of the UAP College of Fellows took place at the North Function Hall located in the 6th floor of the museum. It was presided by COF Chancellor Maria Nina Bailon-Arce. Following the meeting’s adjournment, the architects were eager to hear from Arch. Dominic Galicia, the architect who planned the restoration of the museum. Arch. Galicia, a COF member himself, conducted an interesting Seminar on Architecture in Heritage Conservation.

The seminar was so encouraging that Chancellor Bailon-Arce was very grateful to Arch. Galicia “. . . for inspiring us not just with the architecture that he has passionately invested in the heritage conservation of the National Museum of Natural History but more importantly, sharing with us his life lessons in the process of design since 2012 up to its completion in 2018. So impressive, so inspiring, so moving, so poetic according to some! He has stirred not only our minds but also touched our hearts as well.”

What a way to start 2023 for the UAP College of Fellows. The event indeed left a mark to those who were present that morning. “We were all mesmerized: interesting tour, charming/comfortable venue, delicious food, good seminar, joyful coming together of members, wonderful people, and hard-working secretariat,” was how Chancellor Bailon-Arce summarized everything.

UAP Celebrates World Architecture Day 2022

The United Architects of the Philippines once again led the country’s celebration of the World Architecture Day (WAD) last October 3, 2022 at the UAP National Headquarters in Scout Rallos, Quezon City.

The Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization of Architects enjoined all of its 96 Chapters around the globe in the celebration through its localized programs and projects, and through the UAP World Architecture Day Committee’s two-day celebration with the theme, “Architecture for Well-being.”

WAD 2022 began on the afternoon of Sunday, October 2, 2022, with “UAPSAlitaan x Archi-talks Prism,” a live talk show by the UAP Student Auxiliary and the UAP Graduate Auxiliary in collaboration with the UAP WAD Committee. It was held at the 7th floor, Teatro Arkitekto, UAP National Headquarters.

Early the next morning, the official opening ceremonies began at the main lobby of the headquarters with a Welcoming Remarks by the UAP National President Richard M. Garcia, followed by the Kahilwayan.

Kahilwayan is the Hiligaynon word for “freedom.” This refers to the “freeing of caged Maya birds” representing “pagpapalaya ng kamalayan” - a more sustainable alternative to the usual ribbon cutting ceremonies.

The celebration also included a motorcade around the UAP National Headquarters

from Timog Avenue, to EDSA, to Kamuning Avenue, to Tomas Morato Avenue, and back to the headquarters.

Participants were then welcomed by exhibitors at the 6th floor activity center. The UAP Regional District A1a composed of 14 local chapters from the Ilocos Region, the UAP Makati CBD Chapter together with their partners UAPGA Makati CBD Chapter and UAPSA PLM Chapter, and the UAP Regional District C3 composed of 6 local chapters from the Eastern Visayas Region, all put up the works of their members and some aspirants to the profession in line with the theme “Architecture for Well-being.”

WAD 2022 industry partners - OneGlobal Development Inc., Bostik Philippines, Emerald Vinyl Corp., HCG Philippines, Wilcon Depot, Accutech Steel and Service Center Inc., Crown Asia Chemicals Corp., Gorenje Appliances Philippines, Teresa Marble Corp., ABC Philippines Inc., Manulife Philippines, Tigergraphics, and Unitec Pipe Manufacturing Corp., also joined the WAD Exhibit.

The celebration continued at the Teatro Arkitekto with an opening number by the UAP Singers, featuring a solo performance by WCOPA finalist and medalist Arch. Renz Carlo Tividad of the UAP Makati CBD Chapter, followed by a Keynote Speech by the City Architect of Quezon City, Arch. Lucille Chua, and welcome remarks by the UAP Secretary General Vanessa Ledesma, UAP CGEA Executive Director Romeo Vinco Jr., and UAP WAD Committee Chairman Reynaldo M. Cristobal Jr.

The UAP Makati CBD in collaboration with the UAP WAD Committee also hosted a series of 10-minute talks dubbed as “Paambit” which focused on “Architecture and the Eight Dimensions of Wellness.”

Paambit is a Hiligaynon word that means “to impart.” This is the word chosen by the WAD Committee together with the host chapter, UAP Makati CBD, for this very brief, concise, and yet, informative line-up of talks.

The event was closed by the UAP WAD Committee Vice Chairperson Murielle GallardoCristobal as she thanked everyone who participated and supported the celebration of the UAP World Architecture Day 2022.

UAP World Architecture Day 2022 was participated by in-person representatives from the following Chapters: UAP Baguio, UAP Balladaw Dabaw, UAP Barasoain, UAP Batangas, UAP Del Pilar Bulacan, UAP Fort Bonifacio Taguig, UAP Las Piñas, UAP Makati CBD, UAP Makati Greenbelt, UAP Manila Sampaloc, UAP Metro Tacloban, UAP Palayan Central, UAP Pampanga San Fernando, UAP Pangasinan Magnayon, UAP Parañaque Palanyag, UAP QC Elliptical, UAP QC Pugad Lawin, UAP QC Silangan, UAP Quezon City, UAP Rizal East, UAP Rizal Taytay, UAP Tandang Sora, and UAP Tarlac Kublahi.

Payagpag: Ascending to the Future

After two years, the UAP National Conference of Architects (NCA) conducted a full face-to-face assembly. For that reason, “Payagpag: Ascending to the Future” was the chosen theme for NCA 2022; for we can survive, and continue to do so, the impacts brought by the pandemic, together with checking our preparedness in regards to the future.

Bohol, often referred to as the heart of the Philippine Islands due to its geographic location, was the chosen host for NCA 2022. Roughly 950 architects, together with our industry partners, have traveled to Bohol to show support for the success of NCA 2022, where the 2-day conference was filled with learning, anticipation, and appreciation for the exquisite landscapes of the said province.

The conference started on Day 00 (October 19, 2022). NCA 2022 organizing committee, together with the UAP Executive Committee, paid a courtesy visit to the Bohol Provincial Capitol, together with the Platinum Partner, Davies Paints, represented by Engr. Jojie Quintos. CSR activities were also held the same day and were accomplished at the Immaculata High School in Baclayon, and at Dimiao Central Elementary School.

On Day 0 (October 20, 2022), NCA held its Chapter’s President’s Assembly concurrently with the UAP National Board of Directors’ Meeting.

The conference formally commenced on Day 1 (October 21, 2022) at Be Grand Resort and Hotel. UAP National President Richard Garcia formally opened the ceremony

together with Bohol’s 2nd District Representative Congresswoman Ma. Vanessa C. Aumentado. Congresswoman Aumentado expressed her deep gratitude to the UAP for choosing Bohol as the NCA has helped the province to boost the tourism industry back to normalcy.

The speakers in the afternoon for the continuing professional development of architects were Arch. Angela Lee and Arch. Damian Tang Kok Fei. They shared their practice and ideas which they think are applicable to our country. Both of them flew from Singapore with topics that center on healing the planet and formulating sustainable solutions. The afternoon session ended after the general consultative meeting with the UAP Executive Committee was settled. Day 1 concluded via the welcome night which was filled with fun, dance craze moves, and celebration.

On Day 2 (October 22, 2022), the architects got the chance to explore the province of Bohol through a series of tours. The delegates got to see the following tourist destinations: Bohol Blood Compact Site, Baclayon Church, Loboc River Cruise, Tarsier Sanctuary’ Manmade Forest, the famous Chocolate Hills, and Tagbilaran City Park.

To add some spice to the usual tour, around 100 architects participated in a game called “Dagan Dagan” which is translated as Run Run in the Visayan language. The participants were given tasks provided by our industry partners to finish in each tourist spot they went to.

NCA 2022 concluded via the fellowship night held at Bellevue Resort – Bohol. The night showcased the various talents of Boholanos, through various entertaining performances, which were highly appreciated by the delegates. The host Chapter President, Arch. My NCA 2022 in Bohol Experience

Last year, the UAP National Conference of Architects (NCA) made a comeback. It has been 16 years since the mid-year event of the UAP was last held in this beautiful island province. During that time, I was part of the organizing committee as an architecture student. I cannot believe that when it made its return, it would happen during my presidency of UAP Bohol Chapter.

I was filled with mixed emotions – excitement, nervousness and pride - when the UAP declared Bohol as the host for the UAP National Conference of Architects (NCA) last October. The conference theme, “Payagpag: Ascending to the Future,” was indeed very timely and fitting with the administration’s “Future-Proofing” theme.

Initially, some of the chapter officers were hesitant in accepting the hosting chores, knowing that the tasks could be overwhelming. Some were very excited to accept the challenge. As UAP Bohol Chapter President, I was indeed very happy about the announcement knowing that our home province was chosen over other pristine islands in the country such as Palawan and Boracay. When we broke the news to the leaders of our province, they were so happy especially for the tourism sector here. They said that this is our comeback – like a “buena mano” for Bohol - after the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bohol, being known for its tourism industry, was greatly affected by the pandemic restrictions. For two years, the entire stretch of the famous Alona Beach felt like a ghost town. For two years, not a single person was seen walking around Tawala, the heart of Panglao Tourism. It was disheartening to witness these scenes every time I drove by these areas on my way to a project site. Many lost their jobs and many businesses had to close down. Bohol was greatly devastated.

When we were announced as hosts, I just told the local organizing committee that we should make our participants’ impression positive. They should tell others to come back to Bohol. That was what we also said to our tourism partner, the BOFETTO (Bohol). They said that this was the first time that Bohol would host that many participants for a big event and it might be a challenge to the limited number of workforce in the tourism industry available at that time due to the pandemic. Still, they promised to take the challenge.

We had sleepless nights because of this Herculean task – from preparation of the venues and tourism industry partners, to coordination with the Provincial Government led by Gov. Aris Aumentado, the first lady, Congresswoman Van-van, and Congressman Edgar Chatto. We also got support from the municipality of Panglao, headed by Mayor Boy Arcay. The support of the local police, rescue team,

medical facilities, and media inspired us to work harder for a successful NCA.

Until now, I still feel overwhelmed knowing we pulled off a big event like the UAP NCA. We are also very thankful for it felt like a perfect timing. Amidst the threat of a typhoon, the weather somehow cooperated to make sure the activities that we had lined up were not cancelled. I do not have anything else to say, but a heartfelt gratitude for everyone who helped us in this celebration.

To the organizing team, thank you very much. I made new friends with them. I admired their hard work and cooperation. Everyone contributed and gave their all.

I hope the participants’ stay here in our province during the NCA was a memorable one. As they say, Bohol is God’s little paradise. I hope that despite the stressful and pressure-filled nature of our work as architects, you were able to unwind and have fun. I hope you all return to our little island, just like how the song goes: “Balik sa Bohol, balik.” And yes, always remember, “Buhay Arkitekto, tiring but fulfilling.”

UAP Exhibits at the ArchXpo in Singapore

The United Architects of the Philippines successfully staged its first international exhibit at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center in Singapore last November 16 to 18, 2022. The threeday event, which showcased the latest products and services in the construction industry, was organized by Singapore’s Conference and Exhibition Management Services, PTE LTD (CEMS) headed by Mr. Edward Liu. The UAP booth was clustered with the display spaces from other ASEAN organizations of architects such as the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI).

In September 2022, the ArchXpo organizers invited UAP National President Richard Garcia, through Executive Director Joan de LeonTabinas, to be part of the exhibits with a free 18-sqm. exhibit space. The UAP shouldered the expenses for the construction and shipping of display materials. This was an opportunity to show the world the Filipino talent in architecture!

After a couple of online meetings with the organizers of ArchXpo, ED Joan and her team, together with Executive Director Jimmy Hermogenes and his team in the UAP Communications and Creatives Commission (CCC), started working on the concept of the UAP booth. Arch. Louie Vito sent a quick sketch of boxes arranged diagonally and stacked to form a dynamic wall that increased the surface area available for displaying images of Filipino architecture. ED Jimmy developed the 3D model and the research for the contents and images while CCC Communications Chair Jose Bersamina assisted in the writing and editing of the texts. Since it is less expensive to print the images in Manila than in Singapore – even if shipping costs were considered – the exhibit had to be easily assembled, disassembled, packed, and shipped. The team decided to use sintra boards folded into cubes with slits that will hold them together when stacked one on top of the other in a staggered pattern.

To truly represent the past, present, and future of Filipino architecture, the selection of architects and works of architecture would have to come from a wide variety of sources. The top layer of the exhibit –representing the pinnacle of architecture in the Philippines - showcased the National Artists for Architecture and their works: Juan Nakpil and his Rizal Theater, Pablo Antonio and the FEU Administration Building in Manila, Leandro Locsin and the Cultural Center of the Philippines /

Tanghalang Pambansa, Ildefonso Santos and Paco Park, Jose Maria Zaragosa and the Don Bosco Church in Makati, and Francisco Mañosa and the Coconut Palace / Tahanang Pilipino.

The second layer presented the UAP Likha Awardees, their works of architecture and contributions to the practice of the profession. From Felipe Mendoza, Leandro Locsin, Gabriel Formoso, Cesar Canchella, Manuel Mañosa, Angel Lazaro, Francisco Mañosa, Geronimo Manahan, Edilberto Florentino, Norberto Nuke, to Froilan Hong, Yolanda Reyes, Prosperidad Luis, and Philip Recto.

The current generation of architects are represented on the third row, from the list of firms based on BCI Asia’s Top 10 Architectural Firms in the Philippines. The amazing portfolio of large scale projects in and out of Metro Manila is a tribute to the leaders of these firms as well as the countless architects working with them in their offices. The list included Aidea, ArchiGlobal, ASYA Design, Casas+Architects, Edward Co Tan + Architects, Jonathan O. Gan + Associates, JSLA, LPPA, VisionArch, and WTA Architecture and Design Studio.

To represent the younger architects and smaller practices – the future of Filipino Architecture – UAP areas, districts, and chapters were invited to submit contributions from the members. Area A was represented by Arch. Fatima Nicetas A. Rabang-Alonzo, a conservation specialist from Ilocos, and Baguio-based firm 90 Design Studio of Aristotle Marc Go. Arch. Dominic Galicia and his renovation of the National Museum of Natural History represented Area B. Arch. Buck Richnold Sia and his firm Zubu Design Associates in Cebu represented Area C. Due to time constraints, the exhibit team was not able to include a representative from Area D. The display also included images of the UAP logo and headquarters, a brief history of the organization, a list of the current members of the National Board, as well as invitations for the 84th National Convention and the CONEX 2023. The inside of the cubes were in red, white, and blue alluding to the colors of the Philippine flag.

CEMS requested images of the design and upon reading the design concept and seeing the perspectives, Mr. Liu sent back an email to the UAP saying, “Wow, this is fantastic! I am impressed. Setting a high standard for the others!”

Arch. Arr Jay Joquico and his wife, Lai, took the responsibility of bringing the 72 flattened and folded, not to mention very heavy, packs of sintra board boxes to Singapore. As they arrived from the Changi Airport to the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center, ED Joan, Executive Director Becca Rellosa, ED Jimmy, CONEX Deputy Director Reymark Gardiola, Arch. Ariel Alvarez Tabang, Arch. Chang Libron- Alquiza, and Arch. Ching Segovia all helped carry the exhibit materials from the bus to the space assigned to UAP. ED Joan managed to borrow a roll of artificial turf from an industry partner to serve as the floor cover of the exhibit. After a sumptuous lunch, the team began to unpack, sort, and assemble the boxes into a wall of images and writings of Filipino Architecture. After about two hours of turning, tossing, searching, passing, climbing, cutting, stacking, and probably most importantly –laughing together, the UAP exhibit was done! It was truly a work of collaboration of dedicated architects and members of the organization. Looking at the colorful wall of stacked cubes, ED Joan could not help but say, “Nakaka-proud!” What was just an exciting dream of having an exhibit of the UAP in an international event just a couple of months before was now a reality!

On November 16, 2022, NP Richard Garcia, NEVP Jason Ang, IPNP Don De Guzman, COF Chancellor-Elect James Jao, and NatCon48 Director Joey Manalad, together with the UAP delegation to ArchXpo Singapore, opened the UAP booth. Sales representatives from neighboring booths from various construction materials suppliers dropped by and commended the set-up presented by the organization representing Filipino architects.

After three days, the exhibit came to a close and the team of ED Joan, Ching, and Chang disassembled and packed the sintra cubes ready for shipping back to Manila. The exhibit is expected to be reassembled at the PICC in time for the NatCon48 in April 2023 for the UAP members in the Philippines to enjoy. Hopefully, the exhibit helped promote the Filipino architect to our ASEAN neighbors as one with a rich history, a vibrant and competitive present, and a bright future ahead!

National News NAW 2022: The First Philippine Architecture Festival

The National Architecture Week (NAW), which took place from December 4 to 8, 2022, was regarded as the country’s 1st Philippine Architecture Festival. Its theme was “Ta-NAW sa Sining at Bukas ng Arkitektura.”

NAW takes place every first week of December. It is a time for architects, architecture students, and the general public to come together and learn about architecture, design, and the built environment.

The NAW formal opening ceremonies were held on December 4 at Angelfields Nature Sanctuary in Silang, Cavite; while succeeding activities and the closing ceremonies were held at the UAP National

Headquarters in Quezon City. Each activity was graced by UAP’s National Officers led by the UAP National President Richard M. Garcia and National Executive Vice President Jason Ang.

NAW is an annual event for architecture to celebrate the contribution of architects to the country. The conduct of this year’s festivities was spearheaded by the United Architects of the Philippines NAW Committee led by Chairperson Jien Carmela De Roma-Mercado, Chapter President of UAP San Pablo under the direct supervision of the UAP Commission on Government and External Affairs (CGEA) led by Executive Director Romeo B. Vinco, Jr.

The week-long festivity aimed to give architects a chance to honor the cultural and historical past of the country, including indigenous architectural styles, colonial influences, and modern designs, and to promote both the art and future of Philippine architecture. It also provided information and awareness on the current situation of Philippine architecture’s trends and the challenges it faces, including modernization, technological breakthroughs, and sustainability. Moreover, it intended to inspire Filipino architects to creatively produce designs that are rooted in the past, yet still pertinent to the present and the future.

Various NAW events highlighted the UAP’s partnerships and collaborations with the government and private sectors and were attended by honored government officials, professional experts as resource speakers, representatives from private organizations, allied professional organizations, and member architects from local UAP chapters. The NAW events would not be successful without the steadfast support from UAP’s industry partners, like Davies Paints, Theresa Marble, Emerald Technoshine, Holcim, Wilcon, Pascual Healthcare, Exposure, OTEC, Metrobank, HCG, and CW Home Depot.

In addition, NAW 2022 allowed architects to showcase world-class creations and establish a network with other industry experts to exchange knowledge and insights to feature a variety of contextualized activities, programs, and projects by UAP chapters worldwide, architecture schools, and allied professional organizations. The staging of exhibitions, float parades and competitions, workshops, seminars, and talks by architects, designers, and industry professionals were among the activities successfully carried out.

The conduct of the annual National Architecture Week will always be a noteworthy event that honors the contribution

of architects to Philippine culture and spreads knowledge about the significance of architecture and design in defining our communities.

The general public had a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the function of architecture and the importance of the built environment, thanks to the hardworking NAW 2022 organizing committee members and to all architects and allied partners who passionately supported this undertaking.

Orphanage Gift-Giving Activity

Incelebration of the Yuletide season and National Architecture Week 2022, the UAP Parañaque Palanyag Chapter, collaborated with six other UAP chapters - UAP Tarlac Kublahi Chapter, UAP Clark Chapter, UAP Pampanga Centro Chapter, UAP Bataan Peninsulares Chapter, UAP Angeles Chapter, and UAP Ylocos Vigan Chapter – in extending assistance to the Philippine Baptist Orphanage Ministry in Pandacaqui, Mexico, Pampanga.

The said orphanage, which houses approximately 70 kids, is sponsored by New Life Baptist Church. It is directed by Pastor Jeremy Ferguson, a missionary to the Philippines from Highland Missionary Baptist Church in Gainesville, Florida. The ministry strives to rescue children and bring them up in the nurture of a family-style facility by providing their physical needs and a loving family environment. Currently the ministry is accepting donations in cash and in kind for the rescued children from various areas of the Philippines.

On December 8, 2022, representatives from the aforementioned chapters visited the orphanage to conduct a gift giving activity and interact with the kids. The aim of the program was not only to encourage children to be more creative and active in basic physical activities such as playing, but also to make them feel the Christmas spirit by receiving gifts from the members of the United Architects of the Philippines.

In an effort to help the orphans, Arch. Kyrene Pajela, Arch. Jonathan Vela, Arch. Marysol Macasinag, Arch. Elton Saenz, Arch. Misael Cuneta, Arch. Alvin Mendoza,

Arch. Vincent Tomas of UAP Paranaque Palanyag Chapter and Arch. Ricky Sangil of UAP Tarlac Kublahi Chapter, together with the officers and members of the various UAP chapters, donated toys, clothing, school supplies, toiletries, and kitchen appliances. The architects also introduced architecture to the children through games and arts & crafts.

The architects facilitate games for the children.

Distance was not a hindrance for the seven UAP chapters to reach their goal of extending assistance to the orphanage and sharing their blessings. With each architect personally assisting the children about basic arts, teaching them the importance of architecture, and facilitating the feeding activity, the group believes that they are giving the children inspiration and the chance to become future professionals, or maybe registered architects someday when they grow up.

Several UAP chapters collaborate to make the gift-giving activity possible..

Architectural Festival in Baguio Recalls Art Deco

This fiscal year’s celebration of National Architecture Week (NAW) in Baguio City focused on a more engaging and impactful approach involving the citizens, tourists, and students. The UAP chapters from Baguio, graduate and student auxiliaries, the City Government of Baguio, architecture and fine arts schools, architectural firms, other architecture organizations, and industry partners collaborated to achieve a festival of artistry, vision, unity, appreciation, and a recollection of the past.

On December 4, 2022, a Sunday, Session Road was closed for the architecture profession to be in the limelight of delivering a friendly, nostalgic environment. The event was not only to promote architectural history but to advocate the practice of architecture to society, relevant to its role in nation-building and its contribution to

the city during the American Colonial Period. The theme, “Art Deco Sunday,” highlighted the past architectural era of Baguio in the ‘90s during the establishment of the city’s First Session in 1904 by the Philippine Commission and the influence of the Americans on what is known as the ‘City Beautiful Movement’ by Architect Daniel Burnham as he advocated the movement, which he applied in the City of Baguio. As part of Baguio’s colonial past, Art Deco buildings emerged in the 1920s.

Aside from these Art Deco buildings as the main feature, the celebration also showcased the roaring 1920s, including its fashion and vibe. So the main idea was to transform Session Road into this historical era of architecture called the Art Deco period. The activities included going back to the era when fashion highlighted women who could wear

anything they wanted with elegance and prestige as during those times when they had equal rights and privileges. In comparison, men wore suits and fedora hats as a sign of authority and power.

The recent celebration of NAW connected the provincial chapters to the National Headquarters, taking advantage of the online platform. The satellite venue as an option to celebrate NAW allowed local chapters to enable each one to promote their architectural heritage, culture, creativity, endeavors, and adequate access to resources. However, this required more preparation time and collaborative planning to involve more of the members. Ultimately, this set a benchmark on how NAW is to be celebrated in the country, focusing on a unified celebration of the architecture profession.

To celebrate National Architecture Week (NAW) 2022, UAP Barasoain Chapter collaborated with the City Government of Malolos, through the office of the Hon. Mayor Christian D. Natividad; the office of the Hon. Vice Mayor Miguel Alberto T. Bautista; the Malolos City Tourism; the Provincial Government of Bulacan, through the Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (PHACTO); and Vista Mall Malolos.

UAP Barasoain planned the First Philippine Architecture Festival: Gawa’t Buhay, Panayam at Eksibit para sa Pista ng Arkitekturang Pilipino 2022 to be a festivity to remember. It was open to the general public so they would know and learn to appreciate the significant role that architects play in nation-building and the reason behind the “Get an Architect” campaign. The goal was to promote the architecture profession and its contribution to the society and to the public. It also aimed to encourage community outreach and foster social awareness through the chapter’s Bayanihang Arkitektura and scholarship programs. These include Kapilya sa Hulo, Tool-Ong Pang-Edukasyon, and Daan Tungo Sa Karunungan Adopt-A-School Road Pathway Repair Assistance. The event, which featured talk shows, short heritage documentary film-showing, and Itanong Mo Kay Arki programs, ran from December 8 to 10, 2022 at Vista Mall Malolos.

On day 1, Malolos City Architect Aaron Solis and PRC’s Outstanding Architect of the Year, Arch. Gerard Rey A. Lico, together with Chapter President Anna Lissa Gonzalez and Vista Mall Malolos Mall Head Ms. Jennifer Bautista, led the ribboncutting for the opening ceremonies. Arch. Solis delivered his message on behalf of the Hon. Mayor Christian D. Natividad. Distinguished guests, UAP National President Richard M. Garcia and Hon. Senator Mark A. Villar, sent heartwarming messages through a recorded video acknowledging the chapter’s initiatives in promoting the NAW and its advocacies.

Coronel, Arch. Gonzalez, and Mr. Jose Roly Marcelino, in part 2, talked about Arkilikha 2023, a joint project of UAP RD-A2a and Malolos Tourism in line with the Fiesta Republica.

Bulacan heritage documentary films provided by the Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (PHACTO Bulacan), headed by Dr. Eliseo S. Dela Cruz, were played at the venue during program breaks for three days. UAP Barasoain’s NAW event has also been an opportunity to promote in public and create awareness of Bulacan’s rich culture and built heritage.

On this same day, UAP Barasoain also participated in UAP RD-A2a’s TugtuganNAW: A Night to Celebrate Christmas with District A2a architects at Chop’s and Board Grilled and Restaurant in Tibig, Bulacan. The event aimed to raise funds for 58 Dumagat families and to help them build their chapel structure.

On day 2, Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando sent Mr. Crispin De Luna on his behalf to convey his message and well wishes to UAP Barasoain on this momentous occasion. The UAP Barasoain Council of Presidents graced the “Itanong Mo Kay Arki,” with the topic, “A CSO’s Journey and its Relevance to RA 9266, the Architecture Act of 2004.”

Arch. Hernando Advento, in part 2 of “Itanong Mo Kay Arki,” discussed a topic on “Level-up with Design-Build Specialization.” The “Get an Architect” video produced by the UAP Commission on Professional Practice was also played during the program as part of the campaign launch.

Day 3 was another full-packed activity. On the NAW Talk segment hosted by Arch. Levi Gio Santiago, the Hon. Vice Mayor Miguel Alberto T. Bautista talked about “Keeping up with Malolos Heritage City Ordinance Amid Urban Growth.” Later, Arch. Dennis L. Estacio discussed “The Challenges in the Conservation of the Malolos Heritage District.” These two topics are very timely with the ongoing development of the airport and rail transit system in Bulacan. The kids drawing competition, “Ang Pangarap Kong Bahay,” organized by Co-Chairpersons Arch. Jessie L. Bartolome and Arch. Alenor Mae C. Dela Cruz, took place concurrently with the talks.

NAW 2022 was indeed a festivity to remember. The 3-day meaningful and worthwhile event was made possible through the support of the following industry partners who made the celebration a a big success - Crown Asia Chemicals Corporation, AllHome, Karatula Marketing Inc., Outbox Solutions Inc., Daikin Airconditioning Philippines Inc., Davies Paints Philippines Inc., Streamtech Systems Technologies, Inc., Razcal Interior Supplies Trading, Angeles Architecture & Design, ALPHA Architects, and Paper & Co Vista Mall Malolos.

UAP Batangas Chapter Wins Best Float

The United Architects of the Philippines celebrated Philippine Architecture Festival last December 4 to 8, 2022 in observance of National Architecture Week, with the theme, “Ta-NAW sa Sining at Bukas ng Arkitektura.” The festival, organized by the National Architecture Week Committee under the Commission on Government and External Affairs, aimed to enhance the promotion of the Architecture profession in the country.

Highlight of the festivity’s opening activity on December 4 was the simultaneous parade of floats in different parts of the country dubbed as the “Philippine Architecture Festival Float Parade Competition.” Float entries were expected to promote and align with the overall festival objectives and to send positive

message to the community and to the public. Among the contest guidelines were: the floats must be 90% decorated with sustainable materials; the floats must reflect this year’s festival theme; and the floats are encouraged to show local architectural landmarks and built environments.

The entry of UAP Batangas earned the judges’ nod and claimed the Best Float in the first ever Philippine Architecture Festival Float Parade Competition. The first runner-up was the entry of UAP Baguio Chapter/District A1a while the float of UAP Manila Corinthian/UAP Fort Bonifacio/UAP Makati Greenbelt was adjudged second runner-up.

UAP Batangas Chapter chose the Baywalk in the town of San Nicholas, Batangas Province as the venue of its float parade. During the activity, the float was displayed with the backdrop of the Taal Volcano. The chapter aims to promote not only the architecture of the locality but also the tourism in the area.

After the parade, the group visited the Mayor of San Nicholas, Hon. Lester de Sagun for a courtesy call. The parade was participated by members of UAP Batangas Chapter and their families.

Cavite Architects Expo 2022

Traditionally celebrated every year on the second week of December, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), after a two-year break due to the pandemic, once again kicked off the celebration of the National Architecture Week (NAW) with the theme, “Ta-NAW sa Sining at Bukas ng Arkitektura.”

This event, spearheaded by UAP National, was held simultaneously nationwide with other participating UAP chapters. In line with NAW 2022, the UAP Cavite Aguinaldo Sentral Chapter conceptualized an architectural exhibition through the initiative of the Chapter President Jonnel Hernandez, who also asked UAP Cavite Chapter President Juanito Sy to join to make the exhibition a success. The two chapters’ collaboration to the arduous task played well that gave rise to the fulfilment of the Cavite Architects Expo 2022, in partnership with AllHome Imus, Davies Paints, and Mega pacific Metal & Steel Corp.

The exhibit was held on December 5 to 8, 2022 at All Home Imus in Imus City. It was initially scheduled to run for two days only but was extended due to the prodding of one of the guests of honor, UAP National Treasurer Rene Richie Corcuera, and was considered by the generous All Home manager, Ms. Editha Parone. Arch. Corcuera cited that two days was not enough to showcase the works of 24 Cavite architects who actively participated as exhibitors and LPUCUAPSA members who presented their theses in line with the event’s theme.

The invited speakers and guests of honor, especially UAP National President Richard M. Garcia, were all one in their message to promote awareness of the architect as a profession gearing towards the success of “Sa Arkitekto Sigurado” Advocacy Campaign that considerably emphasized the NAW 2022 theme.

Indeed, the glimpse in the future of architecture lies not only in the perseverance of promoting awareness of what an architect can really do but also the distinction of an architect’s work compared to other allied professions when it comes to its

impact on the social, economic, and cultural elements of a society. The fact that the showcasing of the designs of the exhibitors posed a great challenge to them so they have to consider factors that will not delimit them to attract and satisfy varied audience. Besides, the free consultation/forum of the Cavite architects had a very significant effect in the success of the event that ended well. `

Torogan Exhibit in Cotabato City

Incelebration of National Architecture Week 2022, the Cotabato Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines mounted an exhibit highlighting the torogan, the traditional ancestral house built by the Maranao. Entitled, “Torogan: Ancestral House of Royalty,” it was held at the second floor of the Mall of Alnor in Cotabato.

The exhibit formally opened on December 4, 2022 with Chapter President Hussein Kahar and past Area Vice President for Area D Marlo Basco cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Members of UAP Cotabato Chapter and guests were on hand during ribbon cutting and opening program. The exhibit ran until December 10, 2022.

The exhibit aimed to educate the public on the significance of the torogan as an important element in the study of Philippine architecture. A fine example of the country’s indigenous architecture, the torogan, or sleeping place, is the stately residence of the Maranao royalties in Lanao replete with ornamentation and elaborate details. With the advent of modernization, only a handful torogans are still standing up to this date.

UAP Iloilo Bahandi Holds NAW Exhibit

Incelebration of the National Architecture Week 2022, UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter, together with UAP Regional District C4, presented the “PanaN-AW: A Visual Exhibit of UAP Iloilo Bahandi’s Corporate Social Responsibility Projects, Haplos Bahandi - Dihon” at the 2nd Floor of Iloilo Festive Walk Mall in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

The exhibit, which ran from December 4 to10, 2022, showcased the various projects of the chapter under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, called Haplos Bahandi – Dihon. “Bahandi” and “dihon” are Ilonggo words which mean precious and artistically craft or mold, respectively.

The event featured the following UAP Iloilo Bahandi projects: the Mt. Manyakiya Eco- Park and the Alameda de Dingle in the Municipality of Dingle, Iloilo; the Leganes Integrated Katunggan Eco Park in the Municipality of Leganes, Iloilo; and the Iloilo City Tree Park in Iloilo City.

The Leganes Integrated Katunggan Eco Park is a proposed development of a mangrove forest into a tourist area. The park has a nature structure with its concept derived from a fishing trap, called “taun.” The whole development is critically designed for tourists to enjoy the mangrove forest by strolling along the circumferential boardwalk.

Another notable project included in the exhibit was the Alameda de Dingle or Dingle Esplanade. It is a proposed development of Dingle’s riverfront into a world class space where tourists can chill, experience the rainforest, and enjoy the natural landscape. UAP SOX Celebrates NAW

The United Architects of the Philippines – Socsksargen Chapter (UAP SOX) conducted a series of activities in celebration of National Architecture Week (NAW) 2022 on December 5 to 10, 2022.

Opening the 6-day event, a motorcade was conducted on December 5 around General Santos City to drum up the week-long celebration. The caravan started at the General Santos City Oval Plaza and ended at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) Glamang Campus, where the opening of the National Architecture Week festivity was held. Also in the same venue was the Architecture Exhibit, which featured the heritage churches of Bohol and works of students of NDDU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT).

The following day, December 6, UAP SOX connected with nature and did its part in its obligation to Mother Earth as members of the chapter conducted a Mangrove Tree Growing & Coastal Cleanup Drive in Bula, General Santos City. In partnership with the General Santos City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Socsksargen Chapter was able to plant a total of 100 seedlings of mangrove in the coastal barangay of Bula.

December 7 saw the launching of CONBEX 2023 at Wilcon Depot General Santos in Palen, Brgy. Labangal, General Santos City. CONBEX, or Construction and Building Materials Exhibit, is one of UAP Socsksargen’s biggest major events. It will be held on July 14 to 16, 2023 at SM City General Santos with the theme, “Resurgence: Shaping the Future of Construction, a Breakthrough in Platform of Architecture and Building Communities.”

UAP SOX shifted to high action on December 8 as members of the chapter engaged themselves in physical recreation during its Arkilympics, a term coined for a sports event/ competition which combined the word “Arki” (short for architects) and “Olympics.” The event featured such events as basketball, volleyball, and bowling. Basketball and volleyball were played at the South Cotabato Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc.-Volunteer Fire Brigade Gym while the bowling games were held at the Tokyok’s Bowling Lane.

On December 9, the Board of Directors of the UAP Socsksargen visited the Pao Pao Elementary School, located in the mountainous terrain of Purok Pao Pao in Barangay Sinawal, General Santos City. The architects handed over sponsorship money for some students in the school. The chapter has sponsored the voluntary school contributions (VSCs) of twenty selected students. The UAP SOX officers also prepared snacks and some entertainment for the school children.

UAP Socsksargen’s celebration of NAW culminated with the UAP SOX Christmas Party on December 10 at The Secret Spot Exclusive Resort in Barangay San Isidro, General Santos City. With the theme, “Christmas Tropical Pool Party,”

Saving the Gabaldon

Our present Philippine public school education system is a legacy from the American colonial government. The arrival of the Americans at the close of the 19th century saw the spread of their cultural values, including the English language, among Filipinos through the creation of the Department of Public Instruction. This led to the establishment of several schools across the country and the construction of numerous school buildings, commonly called Gabaldons.

The Gabaldon School Building, or simply, Gabaldon, refers to a type of school building that was constructed during the American colonial period. It got its name from Assemblyman Isauro Gabaldon of Nueva Ecija who, in 1907, sponsored a bill in the Philippine Assembly for the appropriation of one million pesos for the “construction of schoolhouses of strong materials in barrios with guaranteed daily attendance of not less than sixty pupils . . .” Hence, all schoolhouses built under the assemblyman’s Act No. 1801 or the Gabaldon Law were called Gabaldon School Buildings.

American architect William Parsons, a consultant of the Bureau of Public Works from 1905-1914, prepared a set of standard designs for one-story buildings. These were slightly elevated above ground, with classrooms along one side of an open gallery and ventilated through swing-out windows with capiz panels. With Parson’s design blueprint, the Bureau of Public Works constructed more than 3,000 Gabaldons all over the country from 1908 to 1915.

For more than a century, these heritage school buildings have stood witness to historical events and personalities and have played a pioneering role in the development of our country’s public school system. These historical structures served greatly as a home for learning – standing tall against the battering tropical weather and disasters they endured through the years. Unfortunately, the elements and calamities have taken their toll on these schoolhouses.

Many Gabaldons have already outlived their usefulness. Some have been condemned or declared unsafe for occupancy. Some schoolhouses have some of their parts collapsed, deteriorated, or lost their structural sturdiness. Some were converted into storage rooms while others were abandoned for years and eventually faded into forgotten memories of the past.

Seeing the Gabaldon buildings’ great historical value, the Department of Education (DepEd) embarked on the conservation and restoration of these school buildings to prevent their further deterioration. From their diminishing state due to the dilapidated conditions of their materials, the Gabaldons were given their moment to recover back their original glory. They were repaired, reinforced, and stabilized to continue standing for the present learners and the next generations to come through DepEd’s Gabaldon Heritage Schools Restoration and Conservation Project.

The passing of Republic Act No. 11194 or the Gabaldon School Building Conservation Act cemented the importance of the Gabaldon as part of the Filipino heritage for the schoolhouse is not only a mere structure, but more importantly, a collection of history, art, tradition, values, and culture of our forebears. It also symbolizes the very foundation of the Philippine public school education system during the American period.

It is then imperative that the Gabaldon be conserved and protected to serve as a reminder of our country’s unique identity and as a silent witness of these untold stories.

One of the successful Gabaldon conservation stories is the restoration of the Baliangao Central Elementary School in Baliangao, Misamis Occidental. The school has two Gabaldon structures constructed way back in 1910: the main classroom building and the other, the Home Economics building as an ancillary structure. My first visit to the school was on March 10, 2020 along with Misamis Occidental division engineers, Engr. Bryan Jamis and Engr. Michael Lantaca, Oroquieta City division engineer Engr. Rex Gauran, and the school principal Mr. Robic Lusdoc. The visit was to conduct an ocular inspection on the buildings’ existing condition, to draft an initial sketch on the physical structure/ remnants, and to validate whether if they were true Gabaldons or not. Both structures’ condition were in bad state – 70% of the building

envelopes and flooring were already dilapidated and hazardous to learners.

The classroom building has four 7 x 9 meter rooms, a 2-meter width balcony porch in front, and a 4-meter high ceiling height. Each room has huge window panels made out of clipped capiz or lampirong shells and 1 x 3 meter hardwood doors. The Home Economics building, on the other hand, has a balcony porch at the entrance, a living room, one bedroom with a walk-in closet, and a toilet-and-bath accessible to both sides – bedroom and dining area at the opposite sides of the room. It has also a larder (supply room) and a pantry cabinet attached to it facing the service entrance (exit porch).

The restoration project started on September 20, 2020. The total contracted amount for the two conserved and restored Gabaldon buildings was Php 7,662,360.48. The contractor, AFS Construction, completed the project on February 5, 2022 and successfully turned over to the school officials on July 28, 2022.

To date, the Home Economics building was reverted to its original function since it was used as Alternative Learning System (ALS) facility and kindergarten classroom for a long time, while the main building currently accommodates the administrative office and library museum, aside from the classrooms.

Unlike the Baliangao experience, protecting other Gabaldon sites was not as smooth sailing. One tragic story would be the Lala Proper Integrated School in Lala, Lanao del Norte, wherein its century old heritage building was burned to ashes last year. Conserving the Gabaldon structures needs extra effort and dedication, especially on the awareness of the community as to the buildings’ value and role in the country as part of our newest national treasures, both tangible and intangible.

With over a hundred years of existence in their respective localities – these centennial Gabaldon buildings are witness not just to the vicissitudes of time, but also to the major events in the annals of Philippine history, the grooming of future leaders, the despair of calamity victims, and the changes in the lives of everyone who walked through their historic corridors.

Kyusi Circle 5.0: Specialization

Steadfast on its fifth run, Kyusi Circle, a series of talks on uplifting the Filipino architecture profession, continues to run strong, from pre-pandemic times up to now on what we call the new normal. Presented by UAP Quezon City Chapter, headed by Chapter President Isabelito “Tolits” M. Novio, this year’s seminar was entitled “An Introduction to CPSP – CATS for Architecture (Career Progression and Specialization Program and Credit Accumulation and Transfer System),” which discussed the different specialization fields in architecture along with its overview, goals, processes, qualifications, and other plans.

The seminar ran for one full day last November 12, 2022. Conducted through a hybrid modality, some participants joined through Zoom Meeting, while others were physically present at the UAP Headquarters Auditorium. There were more than 800 participants including industry partners, UAP Graduate Auxiliary and UAP Student Auxiliary members, and 711 architects from 97 UAP chapters both local and international, who gained 6.50 CPD points from the seminar.

The seminar proper kicked off with the keynote speech of Architect Robert M. Mirafuente, the Chairman of the CPD Council for Architecture and the Chairperson for CPSP-CATS for Architecture. He briefly discussed the updates and the future direction of the Filipino architecture profession. As part of the professional development plan, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) initially mandated the creation of

the Career Progression and Specialization Program and Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (CPSP-CATS) Committee for each regulated profession. Through the collaboration of the PRC, PRBOA, and other stakeholders, they were able to stream down six specializations of expertise for the architecture profession.

The first specialization, Design-Build Services, was discussed by Architect Donato B. Magcale. He has been specializing in the said field for various corporate office designs and branding over the years. He tackled the goals, objectives, and methodologies of Design-Build Services as guided by the UAP SPP 207 Document. He also directed the participants on the career road map for this specialization.

The next speaker was Architect Lorelie D. De Viana. She talked about the specialization in Architecture Education Management. Architect Lorelie is a former Dean of the FEU Institute of Architecture and Fine Arts. She is also a lecturer at the University of the Philippines and the University of Sto. Tomas. With years of experience in the academe, she shared and elaborated the different level areas and the outcomes of this specialization.

Moving forward to the third session, the discussion on Sustainable Architecture Practice was headed by none other than Architect Miguel C. Guerrero, a green architecture advocate for several years. His talk focused on the journey towards the specialization on how to be a Green or Sustainable Architect.

The fourth speaker, Architect Carlo Fundador B. Marudo, engaged the participants with the specialization on Construction Project Management. As an experienced project manager himself, he shared the ideals and goals for this endeavor as guided by the UAP SPP 204 Document.

The fifth specialization, Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities, was briefly explained by Architect Jose Ramon F. Carunungan. He has been conducting several trainings and seminars in this field of expertise. He also quickly shared the qualifications for certification in the said specialization.

Lastly, the sixth specialization is Hospitality and Tourism Architecture. The final speaker, Architect Mary Louise Catherine Saldaña-Siegel, shared both the economic and social impacts of the interventions, innovations, and technologies that arise as time goes in this field of architectural specialization. She also highlighted that being mindful of the sustainable development goals goes together with the progress of tourism architecture. Understanding all these factors is vital to be certified experts in Hospitality and Tourism Architecture.

Kyusi Circle 5.0 was indeed a success. Further excellence in the Filipino architecture profession is anticipated for the industry as career progression and specialization programs are now in the works.

The Pasig Talking Walls Project

Pasig’s TALKING WALLS project is a heritage mapping innovation of the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office (CATO) of the City Government of Pasig. In partnership with the Kabataang Tambuli Ng Pasig (KTP) and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Pasig Chapter, it aims to provide the public not only a handful of information about the city’s significant heritage sites but also give them an immersive experience through the use of “Quick Response” (QR) Codes imprinted on the panel of standee markers installed on eight identified heritage sites within the poblacion area of Pasig. These sites include the Immaculate Conception Cathedral – Parish of Pasig, Plaza Rizal, Pasig City Museum, Cenotaph of Andres Bonifacio, Bitukang Manok, Bahay na Tisa, Colegio del Buén Consejo, and the Beaterio de Pasig. With Pasig’s rich history and culture, these heritage sites are only the first of the numerous areas to be installed with the QR standee markers.

By scanning the imprinted QR Codes, visitors are directed to the Pasig Memorya website, where they would be able to discover more about these significant landmarks. It will also enable them to explore the stories and narrative contributions of Pasigueños about these sites as well as upload their own personal accounts, photos and experiences.

On December 30, 2022, coinciding with the nationwide celebration of Rizal Day, the project was formally inaugurated. The noteworthy occasion and ceremonial scanning of the QR standee markers was attended by Pasig City Mayor Victor Ma. Regis Sotto, Congressman Roman Romulo, members of the 11th City Council, guests of honour from the heritage sites included in the project, officials from the project’s implementing partners, the KTP, UAP, and UAP Pasig Chapter, representatives from the project’s industry partners, Onduline and Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines Inc., and various guests from the local government units (LGU) and private sectors.

The project’s success was made possible through the collaborative and diligent efforts of various people from the LGU and private sector. From the City Government of Pasig, they are Atty. Bernice Mendoza and Mr. Genesis Khen Demano of the Office of the City Mayor (OCM), Ms. Maria Krisna Parrera of the Public Information Office (PIO), Mr.

The inauguration of the Pasig Talking Walls Project concides with the celebration of Rizal Day. John Carlo Fatallo of the Management Information & System Office (MIS), Mr. Cecilio Baron of the Building Maintenance Office, and Arch. Lea Olivar, Arch. Carlo Martinez and Arch. Jansen Clyde Peronilla of the Architectural Office. From the project’s implementing partners, they include Mr. Jared Carlo Echevarriah of KTP and Arch. Mary Rolyn Ara Angeles of UAP Pasig Chapter. From the project’s industry partners, they are Mr. Mark Sumaoang of Onduline, and Mr. Rainier Paywan of Boysen.

This long-term project of CATO, in partnership with KTP and UAP Pasig, would be the first to initiate this type of project among Metro Manila LGUs. As Pasig City progresses forward to its future, it also gives importance to its past roots which is the

very reason for the launching of this project, and that is to draw the public closer to Pasig City’s rich culture and history through the utilization of technology.

The architects’ role and duty meanwhile, in general, as shape-shifters of the city, is to ensure that these significant, tangible, built heritage sites and historical structures be preserved so that the present and future generations will be able to see, enjoy and experience the physical expression of the past.

UAP Tarlac to Provide Financial Grant to UAPSA Scholars

Officers and Board of Directors of UAP Tarlac has finalized the guidelines of “Project Connect 2.0 – Financial Grant,” a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program aimed to provide financial assistance to deserving Tarlac State University – United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (TSU-UAPSA) members.

The program is a follow through of last year’s “Project Connect,” which provided gadget support and load assistance to TSU-UAPSA scholars. This year, modifications were made to ensure a more flexible assistance to the chosen scholars.

Upon finalizing the details, Board Resolution No. 001 FY 2022 -2023 was drafted and signed by the Chapter Officers and Board of Directors last October 1, 2022. It also included the guidelines for the “Project Connect 2.0 Financial Grant,” application form, and list of other requirements to be attached. A proposed amount of Php 5,000 per scholar was unanimously agreed by the Chapter Officers and Board of Directors and was presented to the general membership last November 2022. Voluntary benefactors from the UAP Tarlac Chapter general membership showed their support, resulting in 16 sponsors to date.

Application forms were distributed online via Google forms from November 17, 2022 to November 30, 2022. Screening of applicants will be done by the chapter officers and awarding of grants will be in the first quarter of 2023.

The goal of Project Connect 2.0 – Financial Grant is not just to provide financial assistance, but also to look for potential leaders to be trained in the future. The application requirements are not limited to academic performance. It also involves lists of voluntary experiences as member and student leader in various organizations and in campus.

The UAP Tarlac Chapter generally believes that volunteering, most especially in the professional organization, provides an opportunity to develop one’s leadership skills in many ways. This is also one of the best platforms to be of service, both in the organization and the shared community. Imparting this vision to the next generation will not only secure the future achievement of the organization, but also in this manner, we future- proof the commendable practices and traditions of the UAP Tarlac Chapter.

Are Future Architects Honed for Global Practice?

“Are Philippine architecture schools preparing our future architects to pursue a global practice?” This was the question for architects in the first balangkasan of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) this fiscal year 2022- 2023. A balangkasan, or quite simply a debate, with architects as the final judges, is the perfect venue to tackle the topic.

It was a hybrid event held at Mozzaico Showroom, Libis, Quezon City and streamed online through Zoom platform last November 19, 2022. Initiated by the UAP QC Central Chapter and in coordination with the UAP Regional District A3 (RDA3) and the UAP Balangkasan Committee, it had educators leading the helm through Arch. Justin Owen Francisco (QC Central Chapter President) and Arch. Raymond P. Clarin (RDA3 District Director), and with the guidance of UAP Balangkasan Chairman, Arch. Joel Cano.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude. These are the categories of learning universally acknowledged in the academe and the bases through which the balangkasan moderator, Arch. Jonathan V. Manalad, grounded the exchange of points among the panelists. Arch. Manalad is an educator himself, past Executive Director of the UAP Commission on Education, and a brilliant arbiter with experience as the Secretary General of the UAP in the last two terms.

The area of knowledge was tackled by the YES panel through Arch. Chona E. Ponce, Dean of the College of Architecture in the National University and president of the Council of Deans and Heads of Architecture Schools in the Philippines (CODHASP). Her counterpart from the NO panel was millennial architect, Arch. Zoilo Amador, masters graduate with highest distinction from the Politecnico di Milano in Italy, and recipient of the Rector Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Santo Tomas (UST). The affirmative panel showcased local education, laws, curriculum, methodology, and evidence of competency in the number of OFWs working abroad. In turn, the negative panel stressed the need for training in design thinking, response to current problems, and lack of international interaction, while differentiating Filipino global practice and employability abroad.

The facet of skills was taken forward by YES panelist, Arch. Sylvester Shaun D. Seño, Dean of the Adamson University’s College of Architecture, researcher, and favored resource speaker across Europe and Australasia. Parallel from the NO panel was Arch. Daniel Vicente A. Lichauco, two time “Haligi ng Dangal” Awardee for Architecture and alumnus of the University of Michigan and University of Notre Dame, USA. The affirmative discussant presented ongoing consultations and improvements in the curriculum founded on the world economic forum with emphasis on preparation efforts. The negative discussant, on the other hand, outlined essential skills in practice such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, business awareness, leadership, and posed the daunting questions of whether we are training leaders or employees.

Lastly, attitude was the arena between Arch. Vinson P. Serrano in the affirmative, and Arch. Ma. Regina Palmes-Falconite in the negative. Arch. Serrano is the College Secretary of the UST College of Architecture and a former Carlo Schmid Programme Fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Meanwhile, Arch. Palmes-Falconite is the Architecture Department Head of the Iloilo Science and Technology University who has had 27 years of experience, and counting, in the academe. The YES panelist discussed affect, behavior, beliefs, and outlined the outstanding employable traits of Filipinos pointing out how imbedded traits are harnessed inside and outside the academe. The NO panelist provided a perspective in provincial architecture schools and highlighted faculty attitude and complacence as arguably pressing issues that disadvantage the proliferation of a competent attitude in students.

After the debate, insights were shared by the reactors, Arch. Carlo Fundador B. Marudo and Arch. Caryn Paredes Santillan, both educators. Arch. Marudo is an expert on project management, environmental planning, and construction safety while Arch. Santillan is an expert on architectural theory and heritage.

With questions answered and issues tackled head on, the audience were given the final chance to vote after the debate, with the NO coming from 65% of the architects who participated. From this, a resolution was drafted which shall be submitted to the UAP National Board of Directors for action. The following recommendations are contained in the resolution:

• That more interactive collaborations be undertaken with schools in the provinces;

• That local and foreign reputable practicing architects be invited to lead lectures and critique students’ works as part of the curriculum;

• That the curriculum be periodically assessed by stakeholders including the PRC, CHED, and other institutions, to be responsive to global practice;

• That the performance of schools be assessed in terms of their graduates’ employability and promotability;

• That schools provide opportunities for specialization.

grandeur celebrations, rest assured that the Provincial Government of Bataan will always be supportive of your developmental endeavors aimed at achieving our mutual goal of making Bataan the best place to live, study, work and raise a family.”

With the aim of giving back to the society, the UAP Batangas Chapter signed a memorandum of agreement with the Katiwala Foundation Inc. last December 5, 2022 for the preservation of the environment.

Katiwala Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization based in Batangas City. One of its notable projects is the “Sagip Ilog Tulo” endeavour, which is part of “Tuloy sa Pag-unlad 2025,” a 3-year sustainable community development plan for Barangay Tulo in the said city. The project aims to prevent the Tulo River’s further degradation by promoting longterm awareness and concern for the river’s conservation through watershed preservation, tree planting, and by transforming the area into a community attraction that people can visit for biking, jogging or glamping.

The UAP Batangas Chapter has agreed to work hand in hand with the Katiwala Foundation and committed to support its activities towards sustainability. Present in the signing of the memorandum were members of the Katiwala Foundation Inc., represented by Mr. Jowie Arellano; members of the UAP Batangas Chapter, headed by its Chapter President Ronald Allan Gunda; and the members of Philippine Dental Association, Batangas Chapter.

After the signing of the agreement, the group also went on hiking to visit the river’s location and was welcomed by pristine waters which the Tulo River offers.

UAP Batangas to Work with Katiwala Foundation Towards Sustainability BU-SKETCH 2.0: Re-Discovering Children’s Capability

The UAP Daraga Cagsawa Chapter (UAPDCC) partnered anew with Bicol University in undertaking one of their extension programs, the BU-SKETCH. Now on its Season 2, BU-SKETCH stands for Bicol University – Supports Kids Enhance Their Crafty Hands. It was coined in 2018 when the Bicol University Institute of Design and Architecture (BUIDeA) formed a strong partnership with UAPDCC in order provide free lectures and workshops to interested and identified high school students.

Though put on hold during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BU-SKETCH program never settled for just a testing-the-water activity. Equipped with nothing but its goal to encourage kids to delve into the Arts as well as Architecture, in a passionate and fun perspective, the undertaking was meant for another season.

This fiscal year, on its second edition, BU-SKETCH came out strong, expanded, and was well attended. It had 30 highly enthusiastic participants, aged from 15 to 17 and coming from six different national high schools in the municipality

of Daraga, Albay, namely: Anislag National High School, Bañadero National High School, Daraga National High School, Kilicao National High School, Lacag National High School, and Malabog National High School.

The first session of the four-part program kicked off last November 19, 2022 at the 3rd level of the SM City Legazpi. The venue was granted for a free use through a MOA with SM Management Legazpi City. The resource person, Arch. Maria Sushmita L. de Leon, an alumnus of BUIDeA and active member of UAP-DCC, trained the participants on how to develop their skills through different lessons and activities. She demonstrated several techniques in pencil rendering, pencil strokes, and proper shading.

Present during the first session were Ms. Cindy S. Lilia, SM City Legazpi Mall Manager; Arch. Leo A. del Rosario, the Director of BUIDeA; Arch. Ana L. Lorilla, District B5 Director and the Chairperson of the Institute’s Extension Program; Arch. Elli John L. Cahilig, current Chapter President of the UAPDCC; Arch. Hazel Ann

L. Menses, BUIDeA Program Chair of BU-SKETCH; Arch. Abigail D. Encarnacion, overall chairperson of this year’s BU-SKETCH; and BUIDeA professors and also part of the committee, Architects Alwin S. Calig and Jobel Bartolome.

The second, third, and fourth parts of the program are set to be held on the first half of the year 2023 with the same participants who have signed up to complete the workshop. The second part is Pen and Ink Rendering, the third part is Water Color Rendering, and the fourth part will be a culminating activity. The designated resource speakers are Arch. Darwin Pavia and Ach. Jaz Dy, all Alumni of BUIDeA and active members of UAP-DCC.

The program, appeared like a crash course in Arts, has drawn the attention of the public. Many people have shown interest on how to avail the program. This has opened the possibility of catering to a larger diversity of participants in the future.

UAP Las Piñas Chapter Celebrates Diwa ng Pasko 2022 at E. Aldana Day Care Center

From a humble bungalow to a new two-story structure, the E. Aldana Day Care Center has since been improved and is now home to more kids in Las Piñas City.

The UAP Las Piñas Chapter (UAP LPC) has been supporting the center ever since. Before the pandemic, the last activity of the chapter was to repaint the ceiling and repair the lighting fixtures of the old classroom. However, due to the pandemic, support for the daycare center has been put on hold. Now that it is safe to gather for big events, the UAP Las Piñas Chapter decided to go back and rekindle its support for the kids.

On December 16, 2022, the members gathered at the Sarao Motors compound for its “Diwa ng Pasko: The Annual UAP PLC Gift Giving Activity.” They helped

mount boxes of goodies in the jeep that will accompany them to the venue. They were greeted by parents and teachers while the kids continued to gather inside the classroom. Ms. Carmelita Dacuyasan, more commonly known as “Teacher Granny,” kicked off the activity by welcoming the UAP Las Piñas Chapter members, parents, and kids for UAP LPC’s 2022 December CSR activity.

Around 30 to 40 kids, aged 3-5 years old, gathered for their first major faceto-face activity. The kids’ eyes lit up as the members of UAP Las Piñas Chapter carried boxes of loot bags inside the classroom. Their curious faces and sweet smiles were heartwarming to see. Meals were also distributed to kids for their morning snacks with the help of the resident teachers. Since there were still kids who would be joining the afternoon session, the chapter also prepared additional art kits and some extra packages for them.

The activity was concluded with a short message of thanks and holiday greetings from Chapter President Bianca Rissa Dinao-Tiongco. Teacher Granny also thanked the chapter members for their continuous support and generosity for the kids of E. Aldana Day Care Center and hoped to have more future partnerships with them.

After the successful activity with the kids, the chapter went back to Sarao Motors compound for a quick tour headed by one of the members, Arch. LJ Sarao. The compound featured different jeepney-inspired projects used for events, campaigns, and transportation, apart from the traditional jeepneys commonly seen around. Quick trivia: did you know that the owners of Sarao Motors are a family of architects? This just proves how iconic, creative, and talented architects are.

Together they have mounted and successfully concluded a series of major events at the UAP Headquarters in celebration of World Architecture Day and the 25th chapter founding anniversary of UAP Fort Bonifacio on October 7 to 8, 2022. Dubbed as “Pilak: UAP Fort Bonifacio 25th Anniversary – B3bute Art and Learning Expo,” this collaboration was aligned to support the renovation of the UAP Headquarters, library improvements, and other CSR projects.

The activities included a poster making competition, art exhibition, symposia, and UAP Fort Bonifacio’s silver chapter founding anniversary. More significantly, an important event conducted during the two-day affair was the launch of Project Reimagined: UAP HQ Facility Renovation, a legacy project initiated by UAP Fort Bonifacio, UAP Las Piñas, and UAP Guam Chapters.

The WAD poster making competition was open to architecture students and was offered on a national level. Through art poster entries, the 32 contestants conveyed their thoughts covering a timely concept reflected by the theme, “Ideals of Architecture and what we can do for the future and environment.” Achievers of the contest were: in 1st Place, Ma. Carmela M. Acosta of TIP Manila; for 2nd Place, Jenric Shane Q. Dela Cruz of St. Louis University Tuguegarao; and in 3rd Place, John Carlo L. Ortega of Malayan College Laguna.

Another crown of the event was the Symposia, which featured continuous education talks by highly competent resource persons. Arch. Jun Pagalilauan and Arch. Mesa Chapter President Paul Ong, Robin Catle, UAP Singapore Chapter’s Arch. Pagalilauan, UAP San Juan Pinaglabanan Past Chapter President Robbie Santos, UAP Las Piñas Past Chapter President Ed Sarao, Arch. Richie Serrano, miniaturist collaborator Desi Reyes, UAP Makati Chapter President Titus Aguirre, artist Felipe Eguia, UAP QC Central Chapter’s Justin Owen Francisco, Arch. Jonathan Dangue, Arch. Kenneth Ann Ditablan, UAP Fort Bonifacio Chapter President Angelo, Arch. Ian Fulgar, and Arch. Mikko Martelino. The masterpieces of these architects and artists graced the UAP Headquarters with their unique forms of art in photography of architecture and city escapes, watercolor and acrylic paintings, doodles, pen & ink perspective, miniatures, metal craft, and sculpture. The exhibit lasted until October 27, 2022.

To jumpstart Project Reimagined, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held with the initial concept through the visuals of Arch. Andrew Trinidad of Makati Ayala Triangle

Chapter. The ceremony was graced by Secretary General Ledesma, National Treasurer Corcuera, District B3 Director Ferdinand Dela Paz, UAP Fort Bonifacio Chapter President Angelo, and UAP Las Piñas Chapter President Dinao-Tiongco. During the event, minor renovation executed by industry partners, only a week worth of progress yet already significant, was showcased. These partners are Boysen Paints, Don Pin Corporation, SMJ-Shaw Carpet, 4N, Net Pacific and Cy+De Konstruct.

However, the occasion would not be fun if there was no form of celebration. Thus, “Pilak” capped off with the induction of new members of UAP Fort Bonifacio and a fellowship with students, the academe, sponsors and partners, and officers of the sponsoring chapters. With high-end lights, music, and an overflowing meal to enjoy, it was a great experience and amazing show of camaraderie of more than a hundred attendees joining the party.

UAP District C1 Advocates Excellence in Design:

The Blue Mango Awards for Placemaking

Aimed

to recognize innovative design ideas, UAP Regional District C1, headed by District Director Buck Richnold Sia, held the Blue Mango Awards for Placemaking, which culminated in a Design Talk and Awards ceremony last November 26, 2022. It was held in collaboration with the Cebu Design Week, Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, and Philippine Institute of Architects to raise the glass for creative endeavors in architecture and interior design, both built and proposed. It aims to “celebrate excellent design” within Central Visayas, covering Cebu, Bohol and Negros Oriental.

Earning top honors with the Seal of Excellence Award is the Knight Juanito I. King Scout Hall in Mandaue City, which is a design collaborative of Arkinamix, Ren Design Studio and Zubu Design Associates. Inspired by the Scout Salute and Oath, its building form resulted into a clean and aesthetically-pleasing massing. Form was not something superficial as it allowed the building to establish clear connections to spaces, both inside and outside the building, to facilitate a smooth user circulation, not to mention open to pleasing views elsewhere in the school campus.

Excellence was not just demonstrated in the final work but all throughout the conceptualization, including the production of architectural drawings and construction implementation, which are essentials in achieving “good design.” According to the organizers, the Seal of Excellence is awarded to a project “that celebrated the challenges accepted in the pursuit of excellence, educate users to seek quality in the spaces that they occupy” and create a cycle that promoted importance of design professions.

Two projects gained the High Commendation and recipients of the Thames Scholarship are the Luca Hotel Interiors in Panglao, Bohol and Tiny Tree Hugger Home in Carmen, Cebu. Designed by DEQA Design Collaborative, the Luca Hotel project harmoniously combined futuristic elements with natural and local materials creating a unique experience of “tropical glamour” that would truly enamour guests into engaging their imagination.

On the other hand, the Tree Hugger House stylishly overcame project constraints like challenging terrain and limited manpower with a livable space co-existing with native trees in a farmland. According to the architects of M+S Studio Company, “the plan is to build a ‘semipermanent pandemic house’ in a permanent setting” and then later

expanding “the house shell as the need arises.” The house is not just an epitome of something organic but reflects the flexibility of the people who use it, allowing it to evolve as time passes by.

Other projects took the spotlight as well “With Commendations.” These are design proposals for a chapel in Busay by SAN Studio, Carbon Heritage Redevelopment in Cebu City by Visionarch, and the CasAmigos Beach House in Daanbantayan by 22AD Studio.

The event reflects the value given by architects to careful thoughtprocesses in coming up with the most appropriate design for buildings or monuments. The District C1 architects are hopeful that events like these would become catalysts to better consciousness and constant striving for excellent design.

UAP Iloilo Bahandi Designs Iloilo Tree Park

With its dream team composed of young and driven architects, the United Architects of the Philippines – Iloilo Bahandi Chapter was tapped by the Local Government Unit of Iloilo to create the concept and master plan of the anticipated Iloilo’s next big thing, the Iloilo Tree Park.

Though the pandemic has radically disrupted the chapter’s activities and projects during the last two years, yet Haplos Dihon remained strong and functional. Haplos Dihon is one of the flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects of the chapter under Haplos Bahandi or Precious Touch. Dihon is an

Ilonggo vernacular which means “to artistically craft or mold.”

With the active participation and involvement of its dream team, UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter was able to finalize the initial conceptual designs right after the pandemic toned down and the border restrictions were lifted.

The dream team, led by Arch. Marianne Kaye Ofianga, and Chapter President Nonard Suvisor turned over the final design to Iloilo City Mayor Hon. Jerry Treñas on January 11, 2023 just in time for the Iloilo Tree Park’s kick-off. Also present during turnover, which took

place at the City Mayor’s Office, Iloilo City Hall, were Iloilo City Architect Regina Corteza-Gregorio, Iloilo City ENRO representative Ariel Gaban, Davies Paints Philippines representative Engineer Lindsey Barbasa, and dream team members Arch. Deanne Marie Berganio and Romer Soria.

The City Mayor has already allocated P2.5 million as initial budget for the “Gawang” or entrance and the park footsteps.

Area C News Samar Sinirangan Chapter Inducts New Members Aklan Chapter Joins Ati-Atihan Festival

The feast of the Sto. Niño falls every third Sunday of January and to honor Senior Sto. Niño de Kalibo, the United Architects of the Philippines – Aklan Chapter proudly took part in the weeklong celebration of the Señor Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Festival 2023. Last January 13, 2023, the chapter participated in the annual street parade/street dancing event, called “Sad-sad Pana-ad.”

Ever since the creation of UAP Aklan in 2006, the chapter has performed the “Sad-sad Pana-ad” every year, except in 2021 and 2022, during the height of the corona virus pandemic outbreak, when health and safety protocols were in place against the holding of gatherings. Sad-sad means dragging one’s foot along the ground surface, creating a dance movement in tune to the beat of the drums and at the same time shouting, “Viva kay Señor Santo Niño Viva!” and “Hala-bira! Pwera pasma!” Pana-ad translates to “vow” or “panata” in Tagalog. Hence, it has been the chapter’s panata to participate in the annual Señor Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Festival through its vowed dancing in the street.

This year, UAP Aklan’s “Sad-sad Pana-ad” is back. Members of the chapter were joined primarily by their immediate families, sponsors, guests, the architects’ employees, and friends. Also joining the architects were members of the United Architects of Philippines Graduate Auxiliary - Aklan Chapter and United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary – Aklan State University (ASU) Chapter. As a show of support, UAP Iloilo Bahandi Chapter’s Chapter President Nonard L. Suvisor and Past Iloilo Chapter President Ludovico F. Fenequito Jr. took part in the event. Close to 300 participants, who spent a whole afternoon doing the sad-sad, joined this year’s “Sadsad Pana-ad” of UAP Aklan.

Himakas: The UAP Capiz WAD Celebration

The United Architects of the Philippines Capiz Chapter (UAP Capiz), in partnership with the UAP Graduate Auxiliary (UAPGA) - Capiz Chapter and the UAP Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) - Capiz State University (CapSU) Chapter marked the World Architecture Day (WAD) 2022 on October 3, 2022 with a day-long celebration held at SM City Roxas in Roxas City dubbed as “Himakas.” Himakas is a vernacular term which means “to strive” or “to make effort.”

The World Architecture Day is an annual global observance celebrated on the first Monday of October. This year’s theme is “Architecture for Well-Being,” which is in line with the International Union of Architects (UIA)’s commitment to encourage design that protects health, design that develops better health, and design that restores health once it is impaired.

Headed by UAP Capiz Chapter President Mark Degala and facilitated

by the chapter’s WAD Director Ma. Gellie Ann Diangco, the event was attended by around 250 participating architects, aspiring architects, and architecture students within the Province of Capiz.

They began with a city-wide caravan followed by the event proper at SM City Roxas where the guest speaker, Roxas City Mayor Hon. Ronnie Dadivas gave his message by welcoming all those who took part in the said event and emphasizing the importance of the architecture profession in the progress of a city.

Afterwards was the blessing of the architects’ exhibit officiated by one of the members of Capiz Chapter, Arch./Rev. Fr. Dennis Dexter Sontillano. This was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony. The exhibit, located on the 2nd floor level of the mall, was on display for a week.

A symposium was also held in the afternoon where Arch. Jico Monte touched on the topic of “Psychological Well-Being of Architects” and Arch./Rev. Fr. Dennis Dexter Sontillano discussed the “Meanings of Church Architecture: A Primer on the Development of Church Buildings, the Theology and Meanings.” Invited students from various schools in the city, such as Hercor College High School Department, Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion, College of St. John-Roxas, and Filamer Christian College, came to participate.

Other featured activities were the following: model making contest, face painting, and puzzle solving. There was also a freedom doodle wall. Sponsors of the event included Davies Paints, Triumph Home Depot Roxas, B-Y and Sons Trading Inc., and Shoppinher Florals.

Area D News Architecture and Design De Oro: Cagayan de Oro Design Week 2022

There is no way to end the year with a bang for the Board of Directors and general membership of United Architects of the Philippines-Cagayan de Oro Chapter as it returned to the face-to-face activities like the Cagayan de Oro Design Week, also known as Architecture and Design de Oro (A&DDO). This year’s 4th edition held on December 9 to 10, 2022 at SM CDO Premier, Cagayan de Oro City, presented “firsts” in its evolving iteration since its inception in 2019. It was a “hybrid” edition (on-site and online), it started to feature local architects and designers as resource speakers, it had a new panelist in the person of Arch. Cheerie Feb G. Eden, pioneer Design Manager at SM CDO Downtown Premier, and a new Chairperson, Arch. Juan Alfredo L. Esposo, ExOfficio, who took over the helm from Arch. Edwin D. Uy, A&DDO Founder.

The lecture series kicked-off with Dr. Gerard Lico’s “Adaptive Reuse and Rehabilitation in Architecture,” wherein he professed that buildings are always subject to “changes” and advocated to “stop building and start reusing.” It was followed by a lecture from the allied profession of landscape architecture by Landscape Architect Vic Dul-Loog with the topic, “The Blue-Green Infrastructure: A Design Approach to Improved Environs,” a nature-based solution that needs to be implemented in the region. And lastly, discussion on the “Multi-Faceted Work of Leandro V. Locsin” by Jean-Claude Girard, a scholar and architect from Switzerland.

The next day showcased the talk of Ed Simon regarding architectural photography, an interesting hobby of some architects and students alike. The last two resource speakers of the lecture series were from Iligan City, but now based in Cagayan de Oro: Christopher L. Gomez and Paul Blasco, who discussed about “Designing Communities: Engaging the Community through Design and Market Access” and “Designing Luxury Kitchens,” respectively.

Previous editions had workshops and design tours, which the next committee hopes to offer in the succeeding editions. The Design Week is an annual gathering of architects and designers in Northern Mindanao, and attended by professionals and students for their continuing professional development and learnings outside the classroom.

UAP District D1 Conducts Tree Planting

Asits own simple way to celebrate World Architecture Day 2022, the UAP Regional District D1 held an planting event at the University of Mindanao’s Matina Campus in Davao City last October 3, 2022.

Several architects of the district devoted their time and volunteered to take part in the activity. They gathered around 7:30 in the morning at the ongoing construction site of University of Mindanao Library Building, along with some BS Architecture students enrolled in the school, for a short program preceding the actual tree planting event.

District Secretary Pauline Zambrano opened with a prayer. This was followed by UAP District D1 Director Neill Pagcaliwagan welcoming the participants with a short address. He stressed the importance of trees in architecture. “As always, these trees shall give life to the end users of these building. What is good in a building without these trees or vegetation? That is why when we do perspectives back in college mas nindot pa ang mga plants kaysa sa building…,” he added.

Being the host of the activity, and as Dean of UM CAAFE (University of Mindanao College of Architecture and Fine Arts Education), Arch. Illuminado Quinto also

shared an inspirational message to everyone as they support the advocacy that they carry. Before the participants officially commenced the planting of seedlings, the program was formally closed by Deputy District Director Gilbert Peter Fortich. Following the pictorials, breakfast was served to everyone who participated courtesy of the event’s sponsor, Boysen Paints.

Surely, that morning was lit with hope, as one who plants a tree, gives life to one’s dreams of a better world.

UAP Datu Bago Celebrates Christmas with Orphans

Inline with the Chrismas spirit, members of UAP Datu Bago – Dabaw Chapter found time from their busy schedules to cheer up some homeless kids during the holiday season. The architects visited the orphanage of the Childhope – Field of Dreams Charity Foundation Inc. located in Biao Guianga, Tugbok District, Davao City on December 20, 2022.

With their visit, they turned over two boxes of grocery items, four sacks of rice donated by the 1003rd Infanttry Brigade of the Philippine Army, and cash for the renovation of the foundation’s facilities. Moreover, the architects also shared some snack refreshments to the children, who in turn, entertained the visitors with songs and dances.

Childhope – Field of Dreams Charity Foundation Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization that operates a residential home for children and youth boys. At present, it caters to 30 kids aged 3 to 18 (all boys) who are homeless, dependent, neglected, abandoned and orphaned.

It is the Christmas wish of UAP Datu Bago – Dabaw that these children will go forth to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Since the children’s development upon moving in the orphanage has been dramatic, the architects hope that the children’s insecurity be replaced by confidence, uncertainty by optimism, and worried frowns by mile-wide smiles.

Indeed, these children deserve plenty of love and attention. The architects’ donation is a way of showing support to the foundation for it to continue to flourish and to sustain its operations in providing services that replicate a normal family life for these homeless children

North Davao Chapter Shares Blessings

The United Architects of the Philippines – North Davao Chapter brought smiles and happiness to the children residents of the Tagum City Sagop Bata Center when officers and members of the chapter conducted a donation drive, called “Sharing the Blessings,” at the institution last November 19, 2022.

The architects, led by Chapter President Oliver Abatol and past Chapter Presidents Galio Palmera and Ericson Europa, donated food items like canned goods, biscuits, noodles, milk, and rice. The “blessings,” also partly donated by some faculty of the Davao Doctor’s College, were gratefully received by the Center-in-Charge Winie Grace Pentacase Pinili.

A short program highlighted the activity. The children prepared a dance number for the guests while the architects facilitated some parlor games,

which the children enjoyed so much. The event culminated with everyone – resident children, UAP North Davao members, and center staff – having a hearty snack consisting of hamburger and spaghetti.

Located at Purok 7, Barangay Magdum, Tagum City, the Sagop Bata Center is a residential care facility for rescued children. It is managed and operated by the City Social Welfare Development of the City of Tagum. Established in 2020, the center serves as home to orphaned children and those unaccompanied or separated children whose families or relatives cannot be found or assessed to be incapable of providing proper care to the kids.

UAP-SCKC Designs Indigenous People Housing

Expanding the scope of its service, the United Architects of the Philippines – Koronadal South Cotabato Chapter (UAP-SKC) lent its expertise in designing a prototype for indigenous people housing. The chapter was tapped by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Regional Office XII, headed by Regional Director Jennifer C. Bretaña, to help produce a design for socialized housing that will cater to indigenous peoples in South Cotabato.

A Consultation-Workshop on the Development of Prototype IP Housing for B’laans was conducted on November 6, 2022 in Barangay Saravia,

Koronadal City to assess the needs of the indigenous people, particularly the B’laans. This was important in order to come up with a viable design that is culturally sensitive, low in cost, but still dignified and aesthetically pleasing.

During the workshop, the participants discussed about the direction that members of the B’laan tribe foresee in the future towards change and innovation, and cultural preservation. They also made visualizations of a model B’laan community and B’laan housing. Next, they identified the socio-spatial considerations in designing the B’laan housing.

Gracing the whole-day activity were Koronadal City Councilor and Sanggunian Panglungsod Chair Hon. Gregorio Presga, who delivered a message to the participants, and Regional Director Bretaña, who took part in the “Extracting Intelligence and Indigenous Knowledge” portion of the program.

UAP Surigao Takes Part in Luneta Park Design Concept

The United Architects of the Philippines - Surigao Chapter played an important role in formulating the design concept of Luneta Park Surigao as part of Surigao City’s 20th Light Up a Tree celebration with the theme, “Funtasy of Music and Lights.” The said design was a collaboration with the UAPSA-Surigao Education Center (SEC) Chapter and UAPGA Surigao Chapter – all of which were very willing and eager to help Luneta Park Surigao City’s beautification and the park’s promotion for tourism.

In the spirit of the Christmas season, the City Government of Surigao laid an initiative to put back again the traditional light up a tree program behind the impact of the pandemic and Typhoon Odette and to bring back the joy and yuletide feels to all Surigaonons. In line with this, the LGU asked for help from the UAP Surigao Chapter and without hesitation the organization

rendered its full support.

Before the execution of the design, architects of UAP Surigao, headed by President Rustico Lisondra and the other officers, put their heads together to produce a good and eye-catching design to target Surigaonons of all ages. Through a thorough brainstorming, the organization came up with a design of a Christmas Village depicting various concepts: sci-fi movie theme, candy land, chocolate factory, ferris wheel and Star Wars. The design was later executed through the financial support from different mining companies and the collaborative effort of LGU personnel.

On December 9, 2022, the Luneta Park Light Up a Tree was officially opened and was attended by different government officials and private individuals. Surigaonons also threw their support and witnessed the remarkable spectacle. Everyone was in great awe and overflowed with joy

UAP Shanghai Chapter: Facing Challenges with a New Perspective

The new fiscal year was anticipated with much optimism in facing the new normal as the pandemic slowed and things began to normalize in China. However, as we began the year with high hopes and optimism, an unprecedented lockdown was imposed here in Shanghai, causing feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and isolation. Because of the project slowdown, many chapter members were at risk of losing their jobs.

Despite these challenges, the chapter remained undeterred, drawing inspiration from the tatayas of the Ivatans in Batanes - the so-called boats without outriggers that could easily break in the wild currents. The Ivatans have learned to anticipate oncoming waves from various directions, allowing them to go with the flow without tipping over. Then they constantly change directions in a zigzag pattern to stay on course. This is how the UAP Shanghai Chapter has thrived despite the threat of pandemic. It continues to dance with the unexpected circumstances, navigating them without tipping over.

To show support to its members, the chapter organized a Growth Session for the members of the chapter during the lockdown. A Certified Mental Health Advocate was tapped to facilitate an Expressive Arts Session where members were able to receive emotional and social support while on lockdown. The invitation was also extended to the other members of the Filipino community who might also benefit from the session.

As part of the bigger Filipino community, the chapter, represented by Chapter President Herbie Recato, together with other community leaders in Shanghai, participated in planning, organizing, and implementing an emergency food assistance to Filipinos who were affected by the 2022 COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai. His support and effort was recognized by the Consulate General of the Philippines in Shanghai last November 2022.

The chapter became more active this year in aligning its activities with those of the UAP National and collaborating with other chapters in Regional District B3.

It celebrated World Architecture Day by hosting a webinar with the theme “Architecture for Well-Being,” and invited two distinguished speakers to speak on “Integrating Well-being in Landscape Design” and “The Architecture and the Epidemic.” UAP Shanghai extended the invitation to other chapters and students in Metro Manila, in addition to chapter

members. A large number of students from New Era University, National University Fairview, and Technological Institute of the Philippines Quezon City attended both talks and found them to be informative, insightful, and inspiring.

The chapter’s most recent collaboration was a joint project with UAP Makati Chapter and UAP Ayala Triangle Chapter in conjunction with the National Architecture Week celebration. They collaborated to plan and organize the NAW Tours 2022: A Walk with Locsin, which took place from December 5 to 9, 2022, at five of Locsin’s most remarkable and famous projects. The tour sites included the L.V. Locsin Building, the PICC, the Ayala Museum, Ayala Tower One, and the Ayala Triangle Gardens. Students, architects, and non-UAP members attended in large numbers.

There is still plenty of time left in the fiscal year for more projects and collaboration, such as the annual CSR project “Bahagi Bahaghari,” participation in the Area B Assembly, and the Heritage Conservation Workshop with Arch. Joel V. Rico.

As the UAP Shanghai Chapter strives to future-proof the profession and the organization, it will continue to learn from the Ivatans: they were given wild currents and built a boat using their natural resources and abilities to design boats that can dance with them. Like them, the chapter shall plan towards flexibility and adaptability in order to be ready for whatever comes next. This fresh perspective will be its compass as it faces new challenges this year. It will continue to navigate this year’s challenge aboard their tataya.

UAP Singapore’s Laro ng Lahi + Paskong Pinoy

Traditional Filipino games are almost forgotten by the young generation since gadgets like tablets and phones became the ultimate way of fun.

UAP Singapore Chapter brought back the games like sack race, patintero and agawan base as part of its event, “Laro ng Lahi” to introduce to the kids the games which the architects used to play before the gadget era came and to bring nostalgic accounts of their childhood to their fellow chapter members, families, and friends.

“Laro ng Lahi” took place on December 11, 2022 at Pasir Ris Park in Singapore. Since it was raining in the morning, the architects skipped the games first and started grilling barbeques for the Christmas Party. They cooked their meals with umbrellas and lit the charcoal despite the rain dripping onto the fire. But they managed to cook their food and served together with home-cooked meals, like spaghetti, puto, pizza, crema de fruta, sisig, lumpia, brownies, and roasted chicken, which the chapter members shared with one another.

After everyone had their fill of a sumptuous lunch, the weather condition improved which allowed the games to proceed. Chapter President Charmagne Uy-Phua started the program with a prayer and with her welcome remarks.

The participants were grouped into four teams with each team composed of five players. After the game mechanics were explained by Sports Committee Head

After the very tiring but exciting and friendly games, the announcement of winners followed. The Green Team was the gold winner, with The Yellow Team, Read Team, and Blue Team as silver, bronze and fourth place winners, respectively. The winners were awarded with medals and vouchers.

UAP Oman Visits 3D-Printed Building

The United Architects of the Philippines - Oman Chapter had a unique way of celebrating World Architecture Day 2022. Last October 7, 2022, members of the chapter toured the world’s biggest and Oman’s first concrete 3D-printed building, located at The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) Campus in Halban, Al Batinah South Governorate, Sultanate of Oman.

The trip, led by Chapter President Darwin Pascua, was organized to further enhance the members’ knowledge concerning the current achievements in the field of 3D printing of buildings and building components as the future of sustainable construction.

The 3D-printed house has a floor area of 190 square meters and is typical for a social housing unit in Oman. It has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, and guest reception area. The house was printed in two stages. To make the concrete 3D printable, GUtech applied the Digital fab solution developed by COBOD, in cooperation with CEMEX, wherein the concrete can have particle sizes of up to 10 mm (1/3 inch) and is made from locally available cement, sand, and gravel.

For many years, Dubai, which implemented a policy of having 25% of all new buildings 3D printed by 2030, has held the pole position for 3D construction

printing, but that position is now challenged by Oman – printing the world’s largest 3D-printed real concrete building in Oman with a super low cost of the printed materials, according to its creators.

In the case of Oman, more than 99.5% of the materials used were local, with less than 0.5% coming from Europe in the form of the Digital fab additives. In

Oman, the cost of materials for 3D printing of the walls of the 190 square meter house was less than 1,600 Euro. According to COBOD, if a printable dry mix mortar had been used the cost of the materials would be more than 20,000 Euro, and it was such significant cost reductions that COBOD and CEMEX was aiming for with their cooperation.

The District A2a Arkilympics 2022

Many have been affected by the pandemic. The lockdowns and restrictions have changed the way people gather together and have face-to-face interactions. In the past two years, most architects had minimal and limited gatherings. Despite these previous challenges, an event that aimed to develop camaraderie and unity among the architects of UAP District A2A was held.

Through the efforts of Regional District Director Cristopher G. Coronel and the UAP District A2a Council, the much-awaited unhindered District A2a Arkilympics 2022 was held last October 29 and 31, 2022 at the Bulacan State University Activity Center and JCAS Sports Alley simultaneously. The two-day activity was participated by UAP Bulacan Chapter, UAP Barasoain Chapter, UAP Sta. The UAP Marvalley Chapter 3rd Bowling Tournament (ARYAH!)

Last October 29, 2022, the UAP Marikina Valley Chapter held its third bowling tournament after two years of being under Covid-19 restriction protocols. In the years before, the chapter had sent representatives to join other bowling competitions organized and sponsored by other chapters. It was only during the time of Past Chapter President Loreta Villame’s term (FY 2018-2019) that the chapter decided to organize its own tournament. It was to be repeated the following year with Arch. Ranier L. Biglang-awa as chapter president (FY 20192020) then there was a hiatus for two years due to the pandemic.

Since these two contests were so successful there was a clamor to continue this sports program of the chapter during the term of the current chapter

president, Arch. Franklin Bautista. Hence, the 3rd UAP Marvalley Chapter Bowling Tournament (ARYAH!) came to be. The basic mechanics of forming the bowling teams was to find industry partners to partially sponsor at least 6-8 teams which would be composed of five players wherein one sponsor representative would play alongside the chapter members or guests.

It was very unfortunate that this scheduled chapter activity, chaired by Arch. Romeo Miramonte, was held on a very stormy day. The event could not be cancelled anymore because of the very tight schedule for the other chapter activities that still have to be done. Ironically the name of the storm was named “Paeng.“ The games were held at the AMF Puyat Bowling & Billiard Center located inside the Q- Plaza Mall Complex in Cainta, Rizal.

The sponsors who joined in the event were the following: Boysen Paints Philippines, Konstrukt, Emerald Pipes, Grandtech, Unitec Pipe, Forman Construction Services, Collera Enterprises, Re-Build Enterprises, and Crown Pipes. Some members from District A5 joined the tournament. District Director Joel Galletes came with Arch. Rey Bolleser, Arch. Danriel San Juan, and Arch. Angelyn Macawili – all of UAP San Juan Pinaglabanan Chapter.

The tournament ended with raffles, awarding of medals and giving of plaques of recognition.

UAP North Davao Stages Anniversary Sportsfest

In celebration of its 16th Charter Anniversary, UAP North Davao Chapter held its annual Anniversary Sportsfest on October 8, 2022 at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gymnasium, USeP Tagum-Mabini Campus in Apokon, Tagum City. Four teams participated in the one-day event, namely: UAP Socsksargen Chapter, UAP South Cotabato – Koronadal Chapter, Davao Architects, and the host chapter, UAP North Davao Chapter.

The main highlight of sports festival was the basketball tournament, though other events were also included, such as volleyball, darts, chess, and scrabble. Emerging champion in basketball was UAP Socksargen after beating UAP North Davao in a tightly-fought championship game. Third place went to UAP South

After the games, a fellowship dinner was held for all the participants at the Heroben Hometel in Purok Visayas, Tagum City. The awarding of medals to the winners followed after the dinner.

The annual sports activity was a huge success thanks to the generous support of its sponsors: Wilcon Depot, Floor Center, Davies Paints, Shecel Enterprises, and ProEx Pest Control Services.
