The staff here at The Arizona Gaming Guide has visited all of Arizona’s many casinos a plethora of times over the past two and a half decades. We’re all members of their Player Clubs. At some properties we are members of the highest level, at others we are somewhere in the middle. But, as you know, we play. And that’s not just here in Arizona, we play around the country and the world as well. Don’t think that’s all we do all the time. Sure it’s our main focus, but not our only focus when it comes to entertainment, attractions, vacationing, traveling, hobbies and so on.
My point being, we know what we are talking about as casino customers. And, as our readers and fans know, we encourage you to visit multiple casinos so you are also aware of what is out there and where you’d prefer to spend your entertainment dollars.
Plus, we appreciate you supporting our sponsors. Not just because they support us but, over the years, the sponsors we have had the longest and most solid relationships with are generally because of the genuine and hardworking people in management, especially Marketing. If a casino treats their customers well, they tend to treat their vendors well, and vice versa. That’s all because of the people in management. That approach is not lost on us. We strive to implement that style of approach and enjoy working with likeminded people and enterprises. It also shouldn’t be lost on you, our loyal (new and long-term, young and young at heart, print and digital) readers and fans.
Thank you to our loyal readers and fans. Thank you to our long-term sponsors who help to make running this magazine exciting and straightforward. As our business moves forward through its seventeenth year, we don’t forget.
Have Fun & Good Luck!

It’s crazy to realize that one month of the new year is already gone! This year, players seem very adamant about implementing changes to their gaming behavior. Furthermore, it seems there is an overarching theme amongst our readers. See how your new year’s resolutions compare to those of others:
Resolution: I’m not going to play fill ‘em up slots anymore. I’m sick of feeling trapped where I can’t leave a game because I’ve filled up the fireworks, the baskets, the coins or whatever. I’m staying away from those games. It’s just a trick and when the bonus does happen, I rarely even get my money back.
A: These games are called “Perceived Persistence” games in the industry. We hope you, and all our readers, have realized that it’s just a perception that the bonus will happen when an event, such as filling a basket of coins, has been achieved – hence the name of these games. You should be proud of your decision, because you should never feel “trapped” at a game.
Resolution: My husband and I will NOT be playing with a player’s card this year. The promotions and gifts are NOT WORTH IT! I don’t need any more luggage, purses or any other things that are cluttering my house. Plus, I want to go when I feel like going and not be tempted by useless items.
A: I can support your decision not to visit a casino solely for the purpose of picking up yet another item that you don’t need. However, I encourage you to reconsider not using a player’s card. When you play any game at a casino, you are earning credit towards comp dollars that can be used at the gift shop and spa or for food, hotel stays and entertainment.
If you don’t want to be bothered or tempted by the promotions, you can always just turn off your email notifications and physical mailers but keep playing with your card. You don’t want to surrender any comp dollars or free play that you have earned as a player because you deserve those bonuses!
Resolution: I can’t stand the casino drawings anymore. I absolutely refuse to play to ‘earn more points for more entries into a drawing’ any longer. I hear the same names announced all the time. If it’s a drawing day for a stupid car, I’m not going. It feels set up, although I’m sure it’s not. The only person that’s happy is the one winner of the car and the rest of us just leave disappointed.
A: Totally agree! We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again and again. When a casino chooses to do a drawing for $50,000 in cash, for example, yes, it’s exciting and it draws people in. However, what will leave more people happy and spreading the news to their friends and family – one winner of $50,000 or 50 winners of $1,000?
Resolution: All the new games have some feature on the top screen filling up and I’m getting really annoyed by these games. They’re only fun when you win and you’re getting into the bonuses and so frustrating when you’re not! Then you feel like you can’t leave because the pig is ready to pop. You will not see me at these kinds of games anymore.
A: Unfortunately, more and more slot manufacturers are creating these Perceived Persistence games. However, on a positive note, there are still plenty of games to choose from that don’t make you feel frustrated and stuck. Never play annoyed or perturbed. Luck only comes to those who are relaxed and having fun!
Resolution: I can’t stand the people who walk around looking for how to win a quick buck on a game. They stand behind me and wait until I’ve reached the top in the hopes that I get up so they can sit down and get into the bonus. Why do the casinos allow this? I refuse to play those games anymore.
A: The casino industry even has a name for those people and it’s “Advantage Players.” If it will make you feel any better, the smart casinos have already banned or are in the process of banning those types of players. It took a while, but they’ve realized that their behavior is only irritating customers while doing nothing for their bottom line.
Resolution: I turned 21 last year and I have been playing at one or two casinos, mostly just because they’re close to my house. This year, my resolution is to visit every casino in the magazine. I’ve heard of some of them but not all of them so I’m excited to see what’s out there.
A: Great idea! You’ll see that each casino has something unique and different to offer. Good luck to you and all our readers for a year filled with some wonderful gaming experiences! $

or those readers out there who enjoy amusement arcades from childhood through now, these brand new slots from Everi are right up your alley! Remember Skee-Ball? Remember Pop-A-Shot? We do! We love those games now! For those of you who haven’t been to a birthday party at an arcade, Skee-Ball is the game with the nine balls, the alley, the ramp, and all the rings to land the balls in. The higher the score the more tickets (well, money in the case of the slot!) you win. And Pop-AShot is the same concept, just basketball. More baskets, more tickets, I mean money!
The beloved amusement park games Skee-Ball and Pop-A-Shot are presented in a premium banked Wide-Area Progressive version on Everi’s Player Classic Signature cabinet with full merchandising and an unmissable overhead sign. Both themes feature the player favorite Win What You See mechanic paired with classic 80s audio that’s sure to draw players in along with Nudge to Win and zero respin features. The Win What You See mechanic is also present in two of Everi’s highest performing titles, Cash Machine Jackpots & Gold Standard Jackpots. The Skee-Ball Bonus and Pop-A-Shot Bonus gives players a shot at winning a jackpot! Look for these slots in casinos across Arizona soon! $

et fired up and spark fun with every spin! Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Ignite Red Prosperity and Blue Prosperity are a party housed in the innovative brand-new Baron cabinet from Aristocrat. These new slots have the classic details players know and improves on them: The Triple Metamorphic mechanic now blends four features into one complete package, resulting in 15 different bonus combinations from Ultra, Zone, Double, or Extra Spins features. And a first for this title is the ability for players to unlock additional features during their bonuses, meaning any firecracker can lead to four features!
We know you love the Red & Blue Festival and Purple & Jade Festival versions (all featuring Bonus Boost) with the three strings of firecrackers, so why not have more? This sequel will provide a bang! So, look for the new slots on casino floors in Arizona by the time you read this. Most likely (but don’t hold us to it!), Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa will be among the first casinos in the Valley to have these games on their floors by February.
Hold & Spin features from Bao Zhu Zhao Fu Red, Blue, Purple, & Jade all return in one package. Players may metamorphically trigger Ultra, Zone, Double, or Extra Spins features.
Metamorphic triggers are still active during bonuses. Players may trigger with one bonus feature but unlock additional features during their initial bonus. $

admit that I’ve done some crazy things in casinos, like falling asleep at the poker table, loaning money to people I didn’t know, spending four hours in the buffet, and daring bosses to throw me out for counting cards. None of those things worked out in my favor, but here are a few things that have.
When I was younger and more impulsive, I had a rule of never bringing a credit card or ATM to the casino. Of course, that’s after making five $200 trips to the ATM for a $2-$10 limit Texas Hold’em game at Harrah’s Reno, where I couldn’t expect to win more than $250.
These days, I feel safer having an ATM or Debit Card in an emergency, but my thinking is that if you want to limit temptation, you should bring only the cash you can afford to lose each trip to the casino.
This is one rule I’m unsure about. I usually advocate for playing a rush and pushing my luck to the limit. Because of that, I’ve had some significant wins. On the other hand, I’ve occasionally reached a happy win threshold and refused to leave, resulting in a loss of at least enough of my win that it stings to remember. Because I’ve had more sting than bling, I reluctantly agree that my best course of action in a lifetime of gaming would probably have been to set a winning goal and quit when I got there.
That would include times when I played poker and had an early monster rush but didn’t quit because I thought it wasn't polite. Today, I’ll be rude and split. Nobody else is paying your bills. Quit when you want!
Many people (me included) crave a little action after a tough and trying day. Unfortunately, blowing off some steam almost always results in blowing off some cash, too.
I’ve had plenty of questionable nights where my psychological outlook was black, and I still went out to win some green. Truthfully, I can’t remember when I didn’t wind up in the red. On the other hand, when I was happy and positive pregambling, my results were substantially better.
Gambling can be a stressor, and it is very difficult to make good decisions especially at poker when you are unhappy or sweating the money.
We’ve all gone to work when we weren’t as rested as we should have been because we burned the midnight oil playing slots! But think about how well your slow-working and exhausted brain did on those workdays. Were you sharp as a tack or a bowling ball?
Now turn those hours around and ask yourself if you should be risking that hard-earned money gambling when you might not have a full toolbelt at your disposal.
I know there’s nothing better than planning a trip to the casino and enjoying the anticipation of the sights, sounds, and excitement of just walking into the place. After that, your first blackjack, front-line winner, or jackpot is icing on the cake.
If you aren’t feeling the rush, take a moment to reassess your reasons for playing. $

Personal Experience Playing For $50,000
Recently I played in a $100,000 Blackjack tournament at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. This tournament has a first round on Saturday, and a round two on Sunday, along with the quarter-final, semi-final and final round.
In rounds one, two and the quarter-final, you need to finish as one of the top two chip counts to advance. In the semi-final, you need to have the most chips to advance to the final. The odds of making the final by luck alone are 162 to 1.
On Saturday I won the first round fairly easily, advancing me to round two on Sunday. So, I had some time to kill. Now, have you ever been playing somewhere and you feel like all of a sudden a wave of luck comes over you? Well, on Saturday night, that’s what happened to me!
I was playing Double Deck Blackjack and played two shoes without ever losing a hand. Then I sat down at a Video Poker game and played Double Double Bonus. I hit four Aces followed by four Twos with an Ace kicker. I told my friend, “I hope this luck holds over to the tournament!”
On Sunday, I won round two and the quarter-final without much effort. Going into the semi-final I knew I had to be the top chip count to advance to the final, but by the final hand there were only three of us left. I had $93,000, player 2 had $91,000 and player 3 $92,000. When the dealer pulled Blackjack it sent me to the final.
In this tournament, the rules present the six players who make the final with a choice. One option is to chop the prize money and take $14,500 each ($87,000 split equally among the six finalists) and not play out the final. The other option is to play 24 hands and then, based on each player’s chip count, first gets $50,000, second gets $15,500, third gets $10,000, fourth gets $6,500, fifth gets $3,000, and sixth gets $2,000. However, all the players must agree to split the prize money equally. If one player wants to play it out, everyone has to play it out.
Now, mathematically, the best decision is to split the prize pool equally. Why? If you notice, only two players will win more than the amount guaranteed by the equal split of $14,500. If all players have the same number of chips at the start of the finals,
the random chance of any one player winning more than the split is only 33%
Unfortunately, only one person wanted to play out the finals. So, we had to play it out!
That person ended up in sixth and won $2,000. I, on the other hand, battled for 24 hands and was tied with one other player for first place.
According to the tournament rules, this meant we would have a five hand playoff between the two of us for $50,000. Talk about pressure!
Going into the final hand I had an $800 chip lead but had to bet first, so I bet my lead minus a chip, or $700. The other player bet $1,200. This meant the other player had to win his hand while I lost mine.
With about 100 spectators the cards came out, Dealer showed an Ace, the other player had Blackjack. He took insurance, the dealer had Blackjack, since he got paid two to one on Insurance, he had enough chips to beat me. But, I still walked away in second place with $15,500! $

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who are just flat out wrong, but think they are right. Especially when a combination of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Logic, (wait for it…) Casino Gaming Regulations (mic drop!), in addition to independent Third-Party Testing and multiple levels of Compliance Agencies (mind-blowing nuclear explosion!), all set up for their protection, prove them wrong, definitively, conclusively and without a shred of doubt.
Perhaps I’ll eschew to the advice outlined in the following quote by Keanu Reeves, “I’m at the stage in life where I stay out of discussions. Even if you say one plus one equals five. You’re right. Have fun.” I get Keanu, I do. Been there, done that, and it’s gotten old. However, his advice applies to a discussion, not Math and it’s derivative fields (i.e. the rest of the universe, sorry universes). So when confronted with 1 + 1 = 5, I’ll try my best.
I do not agree with [holding kickers when playing Triple Double Bonus Video Poker]. By drawing two cards, I double my chances of getting the 4-of-a-kind. Furthermore, there are eleven other kickers [Ace, two, three, or four] in the deck that I could draw. Would you please elaborate as to how you have come to your conclusion? Thanks much.
G. P.– Sun City, Arizona (Editor’s Note: The board decided to withhold the name)
G. P., you can choose to disagree with Math, but the facts are dropping kickers playing Triple Double Bonus (TDB) you’ll miss out on the higher prizes, not be playing optimal strategy, and increase the casino’s hold against you unnecessarily. Now, if you’re good with that, Keanu’s advice says, “Cool, stick with your strategy.” Keep believing that you have “double my chances” and don’t read any further. However, you did ask me to elaborate, so I will, and I’m holding out for your open mind.
So, let’s start from the beginning. You are playing TDB and are dealt three Aces and a kicker and a card which has no bearing on the hand of winning four Aces. To be specific, you are dealt: A , A , A , 2 , J . Mathematically, the order of the cards does not matter as the order of the cards in the winning hand does not matter. If you draw into a winning hand of four Aces with a kicker (2, 3, or 4), you win 4,000 credits at max bet. If the final outcome is four Aces, you win 800 credits at max bet.
The correct play is to hold the three Aces and the kicker. You are hoping for the last Ace in the deck. Five cards were dealt out
of a 52-card deck meaning there are 47 cards left. That’s a 1 in 47 chance of drawing the Ace (1/47 = 0.02127659574468 or, roughly, 2.1%). Casino games are all about Expected Value. That’s all the casino cares about and so should you. Again, Expected Value (EV) can be calculated by multiplying the probability of the outcome times the value of the outcome and then creating a total across all outcomes. Obviously, the other outcomes are a Full House (drawing one of the three other Twos, 3/47 = 0.063829787234) which pays 45 credits (the highest possible pay for a Full House), or a junk card for a final result of three Aces (drawing any of the other 43 cards, 43/47 = 0.914893617) which pays 10 credits. Think it through. If you are still with me, the EV = 4,000 X 0.02127659574468 + 45 X 0.063829787234 + 10 X 0.914893617 = 97.12765957425 credits.
You suggest dropping the kicker (hold the three Aces only). Allow me to run through the EV for that situation. There’s 47 cards left in the deck containing the one Ace you need, eleven kickers you wouldn’t mind having (even though you had one but decided it wasn't useful), and 35 other cards.
The chances of you drawing the remaining Ace and a kicker is now 1/47 X 11/46 + 11/47 X 1/46 = 0.0101757631822386679. You either first draw an Ace and then a kicker, or the reverse, so mathematically you have to set up a sum as the events are independent. Ace then kicker or kicker then Ace get you to the final hand, as order is not important. Taking that probability times the winning hand’s value (4,000 X 0.0101757631822386679) only results in an EV of 40.703 credits. The chances of you drawing the remaining Ace without the kicker is now 1/47 X 34/46 + 34/36 X 1/47 = 0.0314523589269. This leads to an additional EV of 25.1618871 credits. Even if we add in the EVs of all the other possible winning hands (Full House 45, Three of a Kind 10, pair of Jacks or Better 5) you won’t beat the EV for holding the kicker. When you drop the kicker, your total EV is only 78.316375 credits. And your chances of getting four Aces with a kicker dropped by a factor of almost 2. And, if you noticed, you also didn’t double your chances of getting the four Aces.
In short, not holding kickers is a part of the optimal strategy for Double Double Bonus Video Poker so play that game otherwise, what are you doing? What is the point of playing TDB with its increased volatility while not using optimal strategy? Fun? OK. Like Keanu said, “You’re right. Have Fun.” By the way, when playing TDB, also hold the kicker when dealt with three 2s ,3s, or 4s! Why? Math. Or, “Have Fun.” $

The First Course is Deer Steak served with Spiced Red Cabbage and Bacon from the DélDunántúl region and is also a mouthful to pronounce in Hungarian: Szarvashús és Füszerezett Vöröskáposzta (Sar-va-shoosh aysh Foo-share-ah-zett Vor-ah-ska-pos-tah). Try saying that three times fast if you aren’t Hungarian! And then, fit for a Habsburg, and us common folk, the Second Course of Hungarian Trifle with Sponge Cake, Chocolate, and Cream from the cafes of Budapest which is called Somlói Galuska (Sahm-loy Gah-loo-shka).
Hungry yet? We are! Each dinner is $45 with seatings beginning at 4 p.m. each day on a first come, first served basis. Plus, in addition to each made-from-scratch and authentically sourced themed meal, enjoy an exquisitely paired regional cocktail with dinner. $

In a momentous event, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Casino Del Sol Grant Road, marking the beginning of a transformative development for Tucson and the surrounding region. The new 172,000 squarefoot property will include a casino, restaurants, a parking structure, and space for future expansion, all designed to provide economic, social, and cultural benefits.
Highlights From The Event
Kim Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol, opened the ceremony by acknowledging the Tribal Council, Casino Del Sol team, and the construction and design partners, including McCarthy, Yaeger, and Summit Project Management.
She expressed her gratitude, saying, “We’re thankful to everyone who showed up to support us on this memorable occasion, and we look forward to welcoming you at other ceremonies as we get closer to the opening.” She emphasized the collaborative effort behind the project, which will further enrich Tucson’s community and economy.
OJ Flores, Attorney General of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, spoke passionately about the journey leading to this milestone, recognizing the efforts of the Tribal Council, legislators, lobbyists, and other key contributors. He also extended gratitude to dignitaries present at the event, including Mayor Regina Romero, who delivered a keynote address.
Mayor Romero reflected on the efforts and collaboration that paved the way to this occasion and highlighted the significant economic impact this project will have on Tucson, including the creation of jobs and enhanced opportunities for both locals and tourists. Romero acknowledged this groundbreaking as a testament to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s commitment to a shared future.
Pascua Yaqui Tribe Chairman Julian Hernandez spoke on the sacredness of the land, reminding us of the Old Pascua of the elders and the New Pascua of current and future generations, and the importance of unity, one heart, and brotherhood of commonalities among all people.
He then introduced the Tribal Council members, who each shared remarks in a combination of their native language, Spanish, and English. The heartfelt speeches underscored the cultural importance of the land and the vision for its future.
The Casino Del Sol Grant Road Casino is being built on culturally significant land acquired after the passage of the December 2022 Old Pascua Community Land Acquisition Act, which allows for the tribe’s lands to be taken into trust. The new property will feature:
• A 73,000 square-foot casino floor with gaming tables, a highlimit room, a sports book, and a poker room.
• Four food and beverage venues, including a center bar and quick-service dining options.
• A four-level parking garage (space for over 1,200 vehicles).
• A 60,000 square-foot shell structure (for future expansion).
This will be the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s third casino, joining Casino Del Sol and Casino of the Sun. The project reflects the Tribe’s ongoing commitment to community enrichment, cultural preservation, and economic growth.
Jessica Savare, Director of Marketing for Casino Del Sol, concluded the ceremony with words of gratitude and outlined plans for group photographs of the symbolic groundbreaking with custom shovels to commemorate the occasion. The photo session included members of the Tribal Council, dignitaries, the construction and design team, and Casino Del Sol management.

Iabsolutely love gambling. From a very young age, I can recall numerous situations in which the young me (as young as 8 years old) would start sentences off with the words, “I’ll bet you …”
I made money because I was a risk-taker, I was determined, and boy was I feisty! My parents owned a motel and during the winter months ‘snowbirds’ would escape the brutal temperatures of places like Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the likes to bask in Arizona’s beautiful weather for a few months out of the year. Luckily, for a hustler like me, the motel had a recreation room with a pool table. I was willing to take anybody on, as long as they were willing to put money on the table. And God forbid I lost, because people standing outside the room could hear the high-pitched shrieks to go “Double or nothing!” emanating from the precocious 10-year-old me. Bets were usually just a quarter, maybe a dollar, and brownies or chocolate chip cookies if I was really lucky. The stakes got higher the older I got.
Having the ‘gambling bug’ has provided me many opportunities in life, which I’m extremely grateful for. I’m not ashamed to admit that I enjoy my casino adventures. However, during conversations with other people, I’ve begun to realize that gambling, as an entertainment activity, is oftentimes looked down upon. Yet, somehow, weekly gatherings for ‘happy hour’ or raucous behavior at sporting events is not. If you’re a casino gaming enthusiast, you should not be timid or hesitant to admit your enthusiasm for this hobby.
Whether you’re the type of person who enjoys jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet, investing in stocks, standing up to your boss or playing the slots, you’re a risk-taker and it’s the adrenaline rush you love to feel when stakes are high. A person who loves jumping out of airplanes may be too diffident to ask their boss for a raise or a poker player may think that bungee jumping is insane, but all risk-takers inherently have several common personality traits. They are thrill seekers – always being involved in activities that provide extra sensory stimulation to the reinforcement centers in the brain.
Risk-takers are fiercely competitive; if not with other people, then with themselves. They challenge themselves, they’re more open to trying new things, they’re generally more optimistic, have higher self-esteem and are happier than people who play it safe. Although seen as reckless and impulsive, it’s the risktakers that drive our civilization – entrepreneurs, scientists, pol-
iticians, athletes, astronauts, law enforcement, just to name a few – and it’s those individuals who are a crucial part of the advancement of our society. On the contrary, those that are not risk-takers, prefer to stay in their comfort zone and don’t venture to try new things, unfortunately. I’m not sure, but I suppose it’s out of fear.
Next time you’re asked what you enjoy doing in your free time, proudly state your fondness for gaming. And, don’t forget to add how lucky you feel to be daring and adventurous, because that’s what life is all about.
If you have something to say about an experience at an Arizona casino, please let me know! Have Fun & Win Big! $
