ather your shakers and pucker up August 25 is National Whiskey Sour Day, the perfect excuse to channel your inner bartender and toast to one of the world’s most beloved cocktails. Whether you’re a seasoned whiskey enthusiast or a curious first-timer, this tangy, spirited drink has a story worth savoring.

THE SPIRITED HISTORY: The Whiskey Sour’s roots go back to the 19th century, with the first printed recipe appearing in Jerry Thomas’s legendary 1862 “The Bartender’s Guide.” Sailors originally mixed spirits with citrus to ward off scurvy, and somewhere along the rolling seas, the whiskey sour was born combining robust whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar for a blend that’s equal parts refreshing and bold.

A LUCKY SIP? While there’s no official leprechaun guarding your glass, the Whiskey Sour has long been associated with good fortune. Legend has it that sharing one at a celebration could bring luck to new ventures or budding romances. And honestly, with a cocktail this tasty, you’re already lucky!

THE TRADITIONAL RECIPE: 2 oz whiskey (bourbon is classic), 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup, Ice. Optional: a dash of egg white for silky froth. Shake vigorously, strain into a glass, and garnish with a cherry or a citrus wheel. Cheers to National Whiskey Sour Day may your glass (and your luck) be forever full!

Plus, in this month’s issue you’ll read about new games from Aristocrat Gaming and the Arizona Lottery, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino’s charitable partnership with Veterans In Need Project, how the OBBBA affects gamblers, Table Games strategy, News, Entertainment, Sami’s Smackdown, Players Talk and more.

Have Fun & Good Luck!

PLAYERS TALK

A MESSAGE TO CASINO SECURITY: All Of Your Patrons Have A Right To Enjoy Themselves At Your Property

Q: Thanks for answering my question in the June issue. I loved your response! The question now is: how do we tell these “idiots” to turn down the volume of their slots?

Elke Oldenburg email

A: Dear Elke, I’m glad you liked my response. Noise levels (by which I refer to not only the volume on the slot machines, but also the incessant hitting/smacking/pounding on games) have surpassed even what a normal human being would call ‘absurd levels of unreasonableness,’ so it’s time for the casinos to step in and take action. Period.

In this day and age, I don’t advise you to bring up any concerns directly with another casino visitor. Unfortunately, it will most likely go south fast! People are electrified, nerves are shot, and tempers are ready to flare at any given moment. You would think that approaching a person and using a nice tone, in a calm fashion, and asking them kindly to turn down the slot machine because it’s too loud and you’re having a difficult time enjoying your experience, would be enough. The appropriate response from that person should be, “I’m so sorry to have bothered you. Yes, of course, I will turn down the volume, stop pounding on the buttons, etc.” What you will probably hear is, “Mind your own business, I can do what I want, Who the hell are you to tell me what to do,” and so on.

My suggestion is to please notify a casino employee right away and tell them the reasons why a patron is bothering you (whether it’s excessive volume, violent actions on a slot, etc.). Security and surveillance has a tremendously difficult job of protecting the casino assets, employees, and the public, in general. However, part of their job duties also needs to be making sure that all patrons feel safe and comfortable. Because everybody is there to have a good time, right?

If security doesn’t start to be more proactive, the least of the casinos’ problems is going to be the money spent on machine parts, loss of revenue while the machines are down and disgruntled customers walking away who can’t put up with the noise anymore guaranteed. Customers who are causing disturbances for other customers need to be made aware that their behavior is not acceptable. Because, trust me, if one patron is bothered then there is a very high likelihood that others are as well. Furthermore, irate customers who are willing to go to such lengths of beating up the machines, can also be volatile and unpredictable.

I was at a casino when an older man took his walking cane and, with full force, smacked it against the machine’s button panel. The most maddening thing about the situation was that a security guard witnessed the behavior and didn’t say anything. This situation frightened me so much that it took me several minutes to not feel anxious anymore. And, it also made me think, if this man is so angry then who’s to say he doesn’t take it out on another patron next time? In fact, he could have missed the button panel and accidentally hit me with the cane. What would security have done then?

Take a look at “Stadium Lockup,” a behind-the-scenes show on A&E that follows the security team on game days and provides a glimpse into the challenges and responsibilities of keeping over 67,000 fans at the Cleveland Browns’ stadium in Ohio both safe and happy. Besides dealing with medical emergencies, reuniting lost children with their families, and disorderly conduct, I have also watched the security team handle disputes between patrons disagreements awfully similar to those I’ve seen in casinos remarkably well. As one security guard said, loud noise and fans screaming, is to be expected at football games. However, when a person’s actions start to become a disruption to those around them, then it’s time for security to step in. I’ve seen security ask people to quiet down because they were being too bothersome and to sit down because they were obstructing the views of others. To summarize what one of the security guards said on the show, “Everybody paid for their seats and everybody deserves to have a good time.”

I am reprinting Elke’s question and my response in June’s issue below for those who may have missed it.

Q: Hi! Just read the May issue. In regards to the high volume of slots, I see many people turn up the volume. Two people recently told me that the slot machines pay better when the volume is turned up! One person heard it somewhere and the other saw it on YouTube. What’s with this nonsense?

Elke Oldenburg email

A: NO! WRONG! FALSE! LIES! FAKE NEWS! Anyone who tries to tell you that activating maximum volume on a slot will make you a winner is an UNINFORMED IDIOT who is also trying to dupe you and make the casino experience MISERABLE for the rest of us!

How about this? What is the correct decibel level in order to win? What about the simple fact that slots have different volumes? What about the slots that don’t have sound anymore? What about the slots that won’t let you change the volume? What about slots whose volume is set by the casino (low, medium, high) and then can be adjusted from that setting by players? How does all of that fit in with this “Max Volume” strategy to win?

To all our readers: Stop watching slot videos and giving “content creators” an ego boost along with money they don’t deserve for being misleading, spreading false gambling strategies, encouraging problem gambling behavior, advertising for illegal casinos, promoting underage gambling, breaking copyrights, disclosing intellectual property, breaking casino rules, violating privacy laws and more. 99% of what we’ve seen in casino/slot/advice videos is 1,000% WRONG! The volume control has no effect on the outcome of any spin! EVER! This is backed up by gaming regulations all over the world! $

Thank you to our readers for your questions and comments, we appreciate you! Write us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com or by mail at Editor, AZ Gaming Guide, PO BOX 20636, Mesa, AZ, 85277.

The Illusion Of Control

S RISK VS. REWARD & SPORTS WAGERING

ports betting came easily to me. I loved that I could research a game, make a choice, and get my bet down long before the action started, giving me hours of excitement before the final score was announced.

And it wasn’t just what psychologists call the anticipation of reward; I wanted to be right! Give me my winnings, sure, but acknowledge that I’m smart, practically a genius. I got the adrenaline rush, the excitement, the big head. I took the risk, and I got the reward.

I thought sports wagering was simple. Hit 52.4% and you can break even. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, those are tougher odds than you get at blackjack, craps, baccarat, and even Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em. That’s why it’s so important to understand a little gaming psychology.

THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL IN SPORTING EVENTS

Only the seriously twisted among us think they have direct control over games, but it’s easy to think we have specific knowledge that gives us an edge in sports betting. For the most part, we don’t.

The Optimism Bias leads us to overestimate our chances of winning, even after consistent losses. This happens because betting on sports can be successful with skill-based predictions. But how skilled are you? Are you willing to keep track of your wagers – team, spread, home/away, and of course, wins and losses?

Doing this can help you understand your abilities and identify what’s working and what's not. After several dozen wagers, you may find a great propensity for home dogs to cover, large money-line dogs to struggle returning a profit, and good teams on winning streaks to continue winning. I found that I improved as the season progressed, mainly because I watched more games and gained a bit more knowledge.

For me, early, smaller bets were safer, and late-season bets were more successful.

If you make a profit, the psychological outcome is that your confidence will grow with wins, leading to over-betting on future games.

To combat the urge to overbet, remember that knowledge is king in sports betting. No matter your skill, random variables produce unpredictable events.

DISTORTION OF RISK AND REWARD

Keep in mind a few gambling fallacies that can raise your risk higher than your reward. These include the Gambler’s Fallacy, which leads us to believe we are due a win after several losses. We're never due; we’re always wishing for a win.

Another killer is the Sunk Cost Fallacy, which keeps you betting during a bad season of sports or a bad hand at poker, as you try to recover earlier losses. When your hand is bad, toss your cards. Follow the motto “There’s no sense throwing good money after bad.”

One final issue I’ve had with sports betting is the Near-Miss Effect. For some crazy reason, I often feel better (or rewarded) when I lose a game by a point or two, somehow thinking that justifies my bet because I was so close to winning. I must be pretty smart, right?

Unfortunately, the bookies are smarter than I am. They are probably more intelligent than you and the betting public, too. To balance the books, I look for the best game of the day or the week during the NFL. Trust me, it helps to be picky. $

TABLE GAMES

SCOUTING THE TABLES

Look At Stack Sizes, House Rules And Shufflers

Before you sit down to play at any blackjack table, there are a few things you should know to give yourself the best chance of walking out a winner. Tables tend to have similar results, so pick a winning table. If you walk up to a table where one player has one chip and another player has three chips, it’s probably not a winning table.

Make sure you know the house rules. Most casinos have them posted on the 3rd base side of the table. If you don't see them ask, but make sure you know them.

Next thing is to make sure that player blackjacks pay 3:2. Avoid the 6:5 payouts. It's rare to find a single-deck that doesn't pay 6:5 in Las Vegas these days, but there are an alarming amount of 6- and 8-deck games only paying 6:5 on player blackjacks. That's not right and you shouldn't play these games.

Why? Over the long-term you can expect to be dealt a blackjack about once every 21 hands. If you are playing on a semi-full table you can expect about 60 hands per hour, so roughly three blackjacks per hour.

If you flat bet $10 per hand, those three blackjacks should each

Only play at games that allow you to double down on your first two cards, and double after splitting a pair. Doubling down is important because it allows you to attack weak dealer up cards.

Doubling down and splitting is worth about 0.13% in your favor. You should be able to split and re-split Aces up to a total of four hands.

Know the betting limits before you buy in. There’s nothing worse than trying to buy in at a $25 table with $20.

Make sure you know how many decks are used. The fewer decks that are used the smaller the house advantage, as a general rule. With six decks, the house advantage is 0.58% and with eight decks it’s 0.61%.

Most casinos in Arizona use automatic shufflers, but I still pay attention to the cards that come out after a low cut or high cut. I avoid the constant shuffle machines. If you follow all of these simple tips, you will put yourself in a good situation to walk out a winner. $

A PREVIEW OF ARISTOCRAT GAMING’S LATEST SLOTS

Plus, A Surprise Announcement On A Partnership With Hasbro!

Full disclosure. If I’m forced to name my favorite slot machine manufacturer with slots on casino floors today, I’ll pick Aristocrat Gaming’s products. Consistently, their games provide me with an entertaining experience and a chance to win big. It’s OK to disagree with me. There are games by other slot manufacturers I enjoy playing. But, having to focus only on one, it’s Aristocrat for me! Why? Allow me to explain.

The Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association recently held their annual Conference and Show. At the OIGA Show, Aristocrat unveiled multiple games for the very first time in public. Based on what is clearly soon to be unleashed on casino floors across Arizona and the rest of the country, I can hardly wait to play these new slots! Once you finish reading, I’m convinced you’ll understand why I like this company’s games so much.

CHIEF INFERNO

Chief Inferno made its world premiere at the OIGA Show. Housed on the towering MarsX Flex cabinet, Chief Inferno is an extension of the popular Buffalo Chief family, featuring classic Chief stack multipliers, now with all-new enhanced Gold Coins that create even larger Chief stacks, as well as a popular bonus meter.

BUFFALO ECLIPSE

Aristocrat puts Buffalo in a classic stepper game. Obviously not the first time this has been done by them, but I’m eager to try! This is a new three-reel stepper game that will eclipse other games on the floor. The all-new Buffalo Eclipse combines a classic stepper base game with an explosive Hold & Spin feature and engaging metamorphic meter for a new level of fun. Spin the digital wheel for a chance at the Grand Jackpot, Eclipse Hold & Spin, or other credit prizes.

Buffalo Eclipse has three exciting features. With the Eclipse Metamorphic Meter, players fill the meter by landing Eclipse symbols on reels. For added entertainment, the background artwork

changes dramatically as they get closer to completing the Eclipse. The Eclipse Feature delivers classic Hold & Spin gameplay, with chances at landing a Sunset Wild symbol.

In the Sunset Wild Feature, landing a Sunset Wild on any winning spin, including within the Eclipse feature, will trigger multiplier reveals for chances to multiply winnings up to 100X.

Buffalo Eclipse will be released with a multi-denomination option for the main casino floor and a single-denomination for high limit areas. Expect medium volatility gameplay and a Grand Jackpot that starts at $10,000.

This sounds like fun to me! Buffalo, stepper-like play, bonus rounds, I can’t wait!

GALACTIC QUEST FOR LOVE AND MONEY

Making its OIGA debut on The Baron Upright cabinet is the allnew Galactic Quest for Love and Money. Specifically designed for The Baron Upright, this game features the popular Re-spin mechanic with an innovative twist, set to entertain players with its out-of-this-world graphics and sounds.

WHY WINNING THE MONOPOLY BRAND MATTERS

Aristocrat Gaming and Hasbro announced recently that Aristocrat Gaming is the winner of a competitive Request For Proposal process to create Monopoly slot games for worldwide landbased gaming venues, securing a multi-year agreement. The landmark partnership will see Aristocrat Gaming launch allnew Monopoly-themed slot titles, beginning in early 2026. The company is excited to reintroduce one of the world’s most iconic brands to land-based slot games.

“To be selected as Hasbro’s land-based slots partner – after a highly competitive process – is a proud milestone for Aristocrat Gaming,” said Craig Toner, CEO of Aristocrat Gaming. “Our commitment to innovation and bold creativity sets us apart, and we’re excited to reimagine Monopoly slot games for today’s players around the globe.”

“It was evident, through our selection process, that Aristocrat Gaming was the natural fit for the next evolution of the Monopoly brand in the gaming category,” said Claire Hunter Gregson –Director, Gaming Relationships of Hasbro. “We can’t wait for Monopoly fans to experience all new premium gaming content on casino floors.”

I’m hoping you’ll indulge me with a brief explanation why Aristocrat taking over the Monopoly brand for land-based slots in the U.S. is monumental.

First, Monopoly is perhaps one of the most recognizable board games in the world. Everyone knows the basic game play and understands the main objective is to be the player with the most cash and property when another player goes bankrupt. This is a perfect fit for the casino floor!

Second, WMS Gaming (now L&W after various buy-outs and corporate re-shuffling) was the only slot manufacturer with the agreement in place with Hasbro to make Monopoly slot games for casinos in the U.S. They held the rights to the license for decades! And when I say decades, I do mean well over twenty years. Until now, that is. Hmm. Food for thought.

Personally, I think it’s great Aristocrat can make Monopoly slots for the next several years here in the U.S. I’m certain the breath of fresh air from the game design departments at Aristocrat will only help the game play and the entertainment factor.

And, I can’t resist expecting a Buffalo-themed Monopoly! Hasbro has done Monopoly licenses with Las Vegas, the NFL, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and many other themes. So, why not Buffalo? An Aristocrat, Monopoly and Buffalo fan can hope!

DONATIONS SUPPORT LOCAL NONPROFIT

Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino & Community Support Veterans In Need Project

The Arizona-based Veterans in Need Project began as a community-driven initiative, fueled by the compassionate vision of a group of high school students. What started as a simple class project has grown into a lifeline for veterans, offering micro-grant assistance to those facing unexpected financial hardships.

The Veterans in Need Project began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Grayson Price, and some of his fellow classmates at Leading Edge Academy, took on a community impact project. After proposing a nonprofit to support local veterans, the students received a $50 grant to bring their idea to life. Grayson and his friend Micah decided to accept the challenge. They partnered with Joe’s Barber Shop owned by Joe Templin in Maricopa, Arizona using the money to provide free haircuts to veterans. Templin refused the payment and donations from passing by community members doubled the initial funds. Inspired by the positive response, Justin Price, Grayson’s dad and a 12-year Arizona Army National Guard veteran and elementary school principal, encouraged his son and friend to formalize the initiative, resulting in the creation of a registered nonprofit.

Providing Real Assistance Right Now

Today, the small nonprofit now led by Justin Price, offers microgrant assistance that addresses essential needs, including fuel for commuting, baby supplies, small bill payments and other critical items. The Veterans in Need Project’s core mission is to make immediate, tangible differences in veterans’ lives. The focus on micro-grants allows the nonprofit to respond quickly and effectively, helping veterans navigate challenges without unnecessary delay.

“Veterans often don’t like to ask for help, but by being approachable and responsive, we can make a real difference,” says Price. “Though we may be a small organization, we are deeply committed to making a significant impact with the resources we have.”

A Commitment To Service

As a veteran himself, Price understands the struggles many face when transitioning to civilian life. His commitment to supporting his fellow veterans runs deep, fueled by his own experiences and the sense of community he shares with other service members. Price’s leadership has been instrumental in expanding The Veterans in Need Project’s reach, growing the organiza-

tion’s network of supporters and volunteers.

“In our first year, we focused on fundraising and selling trinkets to support our mission,” said Price. “But as more community partners have stepped up to support us, we’ve been able to shift our focus from raising funds to directly helping veterans in need.

In Dec. 2024, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino donated $3,000 to support the Veterans in Need Project. It was the largest donation the nonprofit received to date.

Added Price, “Thanks to the incredible generosity of individuals and businesses like Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, we can now concentrate on making a real difference, and we are deeply grateful for their support.”

(Continued on page 25)

Community Support From Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino has a long-standing tradition of supporting the local community through volunteer and philanthropy efforts. Recognizing the importance of helping veterans, the team members at Harrah’s Ak-Chin championed the Veterans in Need Project as one of the nonprofits its casino guests could donate their change to via the NRT machines. After the threemonth rotation, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino surprised the Veterans in Need Project with a check for $10,877.27

“We knew we were going to be listed as a nonprofit on the NRT machines for a three-month period but were completely unprepared for this level of support,” added Price. “Words cannot express how grateful we are.”

Samantha Gulick, Director of Marketing and Operations at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, expressed her enthusiasm for supporting the nonprofit, stating, “The Veterans in Need Project is a bootson-the-ground organization that makes a profound and lasting impact through its micro-grants. Their work is truly transformative, meeting people where they are and changing lives for the better.”

Looking Ahead

As the Veterans in Need Project continues to grow, Price envisions a future where the organization becomes a household name in veteran support, much like the Wounded Warrior Project. His ultimate goal is to create a sustainable, long-lasting organization that continues to serve veterans in need.

Price’s vision is one of hope and perseverance. He sees the organization not just as a way to give back but as a way to continue serving. “We’re a small, tight-knit community of veterans, and helping one another is just part of who we are,” he says.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to support an organization that consistently shows up and does the right thing,” added Gulick. “Seeing our guests’ commitment to this organization that goes a long way to help those in need is truly gratifying. As Executive Sponsor of SALUTE, our Business Impact Group dedicated to supporting veterans and their allies, I understand just how vital donations are. I’m proud that we and our guests can make a meaningful and significant contribution.”

REEL OPINION

OBBBA & CASINO GAMING

Progress? Maybe, Maybe Not!

President Trump recently signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act as everyone knows by now. While we could care less about the hand-wringing, incendiary and name-calling reactions from politicians, pundits and politicized news outlets over the Act, we do care how the OBBBA affects our readers, namely gamblers (young, old, new, established, infrequent, regulars, casual, VIPs). And that’s regardless if you consume our monthly issues in print, digitally, on social or where you choose to play in the United States.

A NEW THRESHOLD

We are all the same, as gamblers, with certain commonalities between us, in spite of other differences. So, set those differences aside for a moment and focus on what we all have in common: The $1,200 slot jackpot reporting threshold. Did you know the OBBBA appears to have changed the W-2G threshold on winnings from slot machines from $1,200 to $2,000? That’s what the language in Section 70433 seems to imply.

No, the S.L.O.T. Act isn’t part of the OBBBA. As we’ve reported previously, that proposed bill (new W-2G limit of $5,000) is still sitting on the desks of the House’s Ways & Means Committee, unfortunately. But, at least us gamblers who play slots (that’s the vast majority of the gaming public by the way) can rejoice that there’s an extra $800 worth of room before the tax paperwork shows up.

Now, there is some disagreement over the implications of the exact language placed in the OBBBA. Most of the casino gaming industry, including the American Gaming Association, agrees the new threshold is indeed $2,000 beginning on January 1, 2026. We’ll have to see if any challenges appear in court, or if other legislation is introduced before that date. In any case, us gamers should be pleased by the increase. Sure, any movement upward is a win, right? But is it enough? Not really in our opinion and that of others in the industry!

CONSIDER HISTORY

The $1,200 limit was instituted in 1977. Adjusting for inflation, that limit should now be in the neighborhood of $6,400! The S.L.O.T. Act doesn’t even ask for that high a number. But that Act importantly includes language to continually adjust for inflation on a yearly basis. So, $5,000 would quickly increase year over year (rounded to the nearest hundred). By the way, the S.L.O.T. Act asked for $5,000 as a new limit since that’s the existing limit on winnings from table poker.

Now, the OBBBA language also includes adjustments for inflation (technically a cost of living adjustment) “rounded to the nearest hundred.” That language is proof I know politicians and their aides can’t do math. Like at all.

A LITTLE MATH (STAY WITH ME NOW!)

I know a little bit about rounding. As do most third graders, I hope, still! For example, if inflation is less than 2.5%, say 2.499%, simple multiplication and addition would set the new limit at $2,049.98. ($2,000 X 0.02499 = $49.98. Add that increase to $2,000 and arrive at $2,049.98.) Rounding to the nearest hundred we arrive at $2,000 again. Thanks a lot! What a help!

Inflation must be at least 2.5% in order for the language in the OBBBA to be of any help to increase the threshold. If not, we’re still stuck with the $2,000 limit. That’s the math. Who cares about what past inflation numbers were? How about using “rounded UP to the nearest hundred” as the correct language? The disdain for using basic math knowledge astounds me.

AN INCLUSION OF GOVERNMENT DEVIOUSNESS

Now, what’s really sneaky about the OBBBA as it pertains to us gamblers is Section 70114. In this section, language indicates only 90% of gambling losses can be used as a write-off against gambling winnings! Seriously? What idiot came up with this idea in the middle of their sleep-deprived night of negotiations? Oh, I know, Idaho Senator Mike Crapo, that’s who.

Let me lay this out for everyone. Us gamblers earn money in a variety of ways and we are all taxed on that income. Then we choose to use some of that taxed money as a bankroll for entertainment at a casino. All our readers know you’ll never beat the house hold in the long run. And if you do, it’s not easy, provides marginal wins, and may involve luck and your ability to leave. Cash in hand. So, bear with me on a little more math.

Let’s pump a hypothetical bankroll of $24,000 through the slots at your favorite casino across the year. If you win $30,000 in jackpots, and walk away “up” $6,000 at the end of the year, not only will you be taxed on the $6,000, but you’ll also be taxed on $2,400 (10% of losses is $24,000 X 0.1 = $2,400). What the hell?

Fortunately, the architect of the S.L.O.T. Act (Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus) recently introduced the FAIR BET Act to undo what Section 70114 of the OBBBA appears to enact. Fingers crossed on a winning outcome for us gamblers! $

ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF GAMING

Issues Cease & Desists To Multiple Unlicensed & Unregulated Gambling

Recently, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) took enforcement action against several unlicensed and unregulated gambling operators, both within the U.S. and abroad, that have been illegally targeting Arizona residents. In line with its commitment to protecting the public and enforcing state gaming laws, ADG issued multiple cease-and-desist orders to entities engaged in unauthorized gambling activities.

The identified operators are reportedly offering access to illegal online gambling platforms, including slot-style casino games, “sweepstakes” models, sports betting, horse race wagering, and peer-to-peer betting exchanges. These operations are not licensed by the State of Arizona and do not comply with its stringent regulatory standards, posing serious risks to consumer protection and financial security across the state.

The following unlicensed operators have been issued cease-anddesist orders:

Event Wagering Sportsbook: ReBet

Peer-to-Peer Exchange: Novig

Raffles: Dallas Safari Club and Fanthem Sweepstakes: Stake.US

Offers Multiple Types: BettorEdge and High 5

The active operations of these companies and online websites in Arizona are alleged to be felony criminal enterprises, and each operator has been directed to desist from any future illegal gambling operations or activities of any type in Arizona. Due to the unregulated and illegal online gaming offerings on these sites, operators are claimed to be in violation of Arizona gaming laws, including:

1. Promotion of Gambling (Felony) A.R.S. § 13-3303.

2. Illegal Control of an Enterprise (Felony) A.R.S. § 13-2312.

3. Money Laundering (Felony) A.R.S. § 13-2317.

Each of the above aforementioned operators has been directed to immediately cease all online (or other) gambling operations and activities in Arizona, and take the necessary steps to immediately prevent and exclude Arizona residents and visitors from gambling on their websites.

“Illegal gambling, regardless of the platform or format, has no place in Arizona,” said Jackie Johnson, Director of the ADG.

“Whether it’s online casino-style games, sweepstakes models, or unauthorized sports betting, any operation that falls outside Arizona’s legal and regulatory framework will face enforcement

action. Illegal gambling doesn’t just break the law; it robs our state’s economy and puts consumers at risk. The Department stands firmly with our licensed and regulated operators who are following the rules, contributing to Arizona’s economic health, and upholding the protections that a regulated market provides.”

CONSUMER PROTECTION ADVISORY:

As illegal online gaming activity continues to rise, the ADG urges all residents and visitors to be cautious when participating in gaming, whether online or in person. Regulated gaming offers important consumer protections, helping ensure fair play, data security, accountability, and a safer overall experience.

Many online platforms currently accessible in Arizona are neither licensed nor regulated, exposing users to significant risks, including fraud, identity theft, and financial loss. Because these operations fall outside the state’s regulatory authority, ADG cannot assist with complaints or disputes involving unregulated or illegal gaming activities, often leaving victims with no recourse for recovering lost funds. It is important to remember: just because you can download the app, access the website, and play the games does not mean the platform is legal or safe.

Individuals are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of any gaming platform before placing bets or engaging in gameplay. To protect yourself, always use legally authorized and stateregulated operators. A complete list of authorized casinos, event wagering operators, fantasy sports operators, and off-track betting and advanced deposit wagering providers for horse racing is available on ADG’s official website: Gaming.AZ.gov/ CheckYourBet.

Also, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) takes complaints about all illegal gambling seriously. To report suspected illegal gambling activity of any type, visit their website at Gaming.AZ.gov/About/Contact-Us, call (602) 255-3886, or email publicaffairs@azgaming.gov. You can remain anonymous. $

DAMNED IF YOU DO, DAMNED IF YOU DON’T

Jackpot Announcements, Just One Of Many Daily Dilemmas Casinos Face

My personal experience is varied and extensive when it comes to frequenting casinos around Arizona, Nevada, Southern California, and across this country. Over the years, I've witnessed many versions of jackpot announcements in casinos. Personally, when done well, I like them. It’s fun to hear your jackpot acknowledged. Plus, even if I haven’t hit big (yet!), I know I’m not the only one winning. On the other hand, if my session is horrific, I can do without the announcement.

And then, for everyone’s listening pleasure, the intolerable casino patrons Negative Nathan and Debbie Downer! I hear both of them routinely grumble out loud a variation on one of two sentences. Either it’s “Yeah right! I don’t see anybody winning so I don’t believe that!” or it’s “Well, I’m not winning so shut up!” Don’t believe me? Go listen for yourself.

Casino management can’t do anything about Negative Nathan and Debbie Downer as customers. Some people perpetually get up on the wrong side of the bed. There’s not much a casino can ever offer that can make that category of customer happy.

But, to those Negative Nathans and Debbie Downers out there, I’d like to know where they think the announcement originated from? Casinos just lie? It’s not even remotely possible that a patron, all the way over on the other side of the gaming floor, just won a large sum of money that should be celebrated? Casinos shouldn’t announce their winners? That’s not realistic!

In my opinion, casinos should be promoting the heck out of their winners. Afterall, if it’s not mainly about the thrill of winning cold hard cash, why are we there? Because the view is so unique? I doubt it. There are plenty of locations with incredible views that don’t have a casino next to them!

Casinos who aren’t mentioning winners are missing out, in my opinion. But it’s the timing and the message of the jackpot announcements that matters, in my book.

I really believe details matter. A patrons first name, where they are visiting from, what game they were playing, where the game is located in the casino, what their bet was, how they won the jackpot and, obviously, the amount. Ultimately, that’s what other players want to know. Don’t believe me? Go listen for yourself. The jackpot announcement can be followed up with a targeted message promoting something in the casino.

For example, “Sami’s Smackdown Casino is pleased to share with everyone that Edna from Wickenburg just won $12,372 on the Dragon Link games near the coffee shop. She was betting $2 and hit the Hold & Spin Bonus. Congratulations Edna! And, remember to sign up for the Sami’s Smackdown Rewards Card because our seniors enjoy two-for-one coffees today as enrolled members. Just ask any employee or head over to the Players Club. Thanks for playing at Sami’s Smackdown Casino!”

Now, here’s the bit that gets tricky in my opinion. Timing. If it’s slow, go ahead and announce the jackpots as they come in. The busier it gets you just can’t do that anymore. It’s annoying. Trust me. Having jackpot announcements (or jackpot music) going off every few minutes becomes rote background noise. That’s when Negative Nathan and Debbie Downer get vocal. Stagger it every 30, 60, or 90 minutes the busier it gets. And, only highlight the biggest winners while mentioning a combined total.

Not interested in announcements? Direct players to a screen that’s connected to the casino’s accounting system. Just do a list of the last 25 wins. That’s not hard. Or, push the winners to the screens on the player tracking system. Again, don’t overwhelm. Space it out. Hopefully that avoids, “damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” And the vast majority of customers should be content.

Please let me know what you think and I’m happy to field comments from our fans and from casino employees or executives. You can choose to remain anonymous! $
