Looking Forward To May 16

ational Barbecue Day is celebrated every year on May 16 with great enthusiasm to honor the cherished tradition of barbecue. This day brings together families, friends, and communities to delight in grilling and mouth-watering fire-cooked delicacies. Barbecue is a staple of American culture, with methods and recipes passed down through generations, showcasing diverse culinary practices.

On National Barbecue Day, people fire up their grills and smokers to cook an array of meats, vegetables, and even desserts, highlighting the versatility of barbecue cooking. The day is filled with outdoor gatherings, lively block parties, and thrilling barbecuing competitions, fostering community spirit and shared enjoyment.

Hopefully plenty of Arizona’s casinos will offer food specials so we can all celebrate National Barbecue Day while getting our gamble on! Or, share the day and the food at home. Happy barbecuing!

For those eager to join in with a classic barbecue dish, here's a tantalizing and easy recipe for dry rub ribs: Ingredients 1 rack of pork ribs, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon paprika, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin. Instructions Preheat the grill: Set your grill to 225°F for low and slow cooking. Prepare the ribs: Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs for better flavor and tenderness. Mix the dry rub: In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, chili powder, and cumin. Apply the rub: Generously cover both sides of the ribs with the dry rub, pressing it into the meat. Grill the ribs: Place the ribs on the grill, meat side up. Cook for 3-4 hours, or until tender, occasionally checking and maintaining the temperature. Serve: Once cooked, let the ribs rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy with your favorite barbecue sauce or as is!

Have Fun & Good Luck!

PLAYERS TALK

HOW TO LOSE A CUSTOMER, AGAIN!

Plus, Try Out Sensory-Friendly Hours, If You Haven’t Already!

Q: I received a strange phone call a few weeks back from someone who claimed to represent the VIP Department of the Players Club at [an Arizona casino]. In a long and confusing speech, they told me they were reaching out on behalf of the casino in order to get me to begin visiting them again. I told them what kind of player I was, where I played, what cards I have, what my expectations are, and why I stopped playing at their casino a while back. I thought I was being nice and having an honest conversation with the guy.

At the end of the call he told me he’d take my info to his supervisor and get back to me by Friday. This was on a Tuesday, by the way. Did he call back? No. Did he call back the following Friday? No. Have I heard from him again? No. Am I going back? No.

Have you heard anything about this?

A: Hi Bill! Thanks for your letter. Yikes! Not cool. Especially since, based on what you are telling us, you can back up your VIP status at other casinos.

Not sure why any casino’s VIP Department would blow you off, for any reason. If you are at a high level of play, any casino should want to have you as a customer. The interaction you describe makes no sense. There’s always a way to press the proverbial “reset button” on a customer relationship, especially with a VIP. That’s the job of the casino host department. And, they shouldn’t tell you “No” by the way, or not communicate. Maybe a host has to have a personal face-to-face conversation about player expectations, but “no” or silence, not a good sign.

My only advice, and I understand if you don’t want to take it, would be to reach out to the casino directly about your experience. Perhaps ask to speak to the Casino Host Manager or the Players Club Manager and discuss with them what happened. Maybe you’ll elicit a better customer service interaction.

But, as you didn’t elaborate on what made you quit visiting that casino to begin with, you may already be too fed up with them to go to the trouble to talk to them. And therein lies the problem, bad customer service on the part of the casino, even while making a new effort to reconnect with a customer.

If it was me, personally, I wouldn’t waste my time. The casino in question clearly does not have their act together nor cares about you nor their VIPs in general.

Q: So, everyone’s opinions about Walmart aside, if I shop there, it’s usually on my way home from work in the evening. Sometimes I’m there on a weekend. Usually I tend to avoid shopping at grocery stores on weekends. I had a day off during the week and I needed to get a few things so I went early. It was so peaceful. Everyone was friendly, nice, happy, calm. The store was quiet, the radio was off. I felt like I was transported back to another time. I asked and someone told me it was quiet hours. What a great idea! Why can’t other places, like casinos, follow this idea?

A: We looked in to Walmart’s “Sensory-Friendly Hours” which are at all U.S. and Puerto Rico stores daily from 8 to 10 a.m. Yes, that’s every day. If you haven’t visited, try it out. In our staff’s opinion, the shopping experience is far more pleasant.

Now, Walmart and similar shopping experiences are a far cry from the sensory overload of a casino. Lights, sounds, energy, excitement, socializing, the list goes on. We all know what a casino can be like! New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas anyone? Or perhaps, a fight night?

However, it seems Walmart received a lot of positive feedback across the board from shoppers and employees when they ran pilot programs leading up to their decision to implement the program across the board in late 2023. Specifically, the company had a very positive response from customers and workers who have family members on the Autism spectrum.

So, obviously, they expanded the program from a pilot to nation wide. Our staff can’t help but see the parallels with postpandemic indoor smoking in casinos. Arizona is proof you do not need indoor smoking in casinos. Things are just fine when our state’s gaming revenue keeps increasing. And, there are very few properties in Arizona which allow smoking. So clearly revenue hasn’t taken a hit and the very few casinos which allow smoking didn’t attract every smoking gambler in the state. We see plenty of casino customers puffing away outside.

So, maybe Walmart can encourage a similar trend at casinos? Quiet hours on Mondays from 8 to 10 a.m. anyone? No music, all the slots are set to their lowest possible volume, no yelling, static TV screens. Honestly, we’d participate. Maybe a property tries it. See what happens with coin-in. $

GAMES

TICKET-IN, TICKET-OUT SLOT MACHINES

What Cashing Out Means Today

When I was a tiny little gambler, a $2 roll of nickels (40 coins!) was enough to have some fun at the slot machines in Lake Tahoe. It took just a single coin to pull the handle on most slots, and the standard jackpot was $7.50, which was paid for in nickels. You’d need a coin cup to take your booty to another machine or the change booth if you hit a jackpot or multiple smaller payoffs.

Now we’re modern and lucky. No coins. Just a ticket when we leave a machine with credits. Dropped coins don’t roll away from sight, we don’t get filthy fingers handling coins, and there’s no wait at the cage while the cashier struggles with hundreds of coins clanking through the coin counter. But there’s a downside.

Where’s My Cash?

The downside of Ticket-In, Ticket-Out gambling is that you aren’t handling cash. It’s too easy to jam a ticket back in another slot machine!

I played slots recently and watched a happy couple force-feed their machines. I’m not judging; I was doing the same thing. But when one of them did catch a nice payoff, they argued about whether to cash out the ticket or save it. They were talking about leaving right before the hit. I’m not sure if they did.

Did taking the ticket make returning easier if they got out the door? Did it make paying any expenses harder that week? Did they get the emotional boost I always savor when I reach the cage? It’s that moment I look forward to all night in the casino. I hate not getting it.

Going home with a ticket instead of cash is a slippery slope or at least a blurred line between safe and shaky psychological gambling behavior. Visiting the cashier’s cage involves many emotions as you cash out. You may or may not be winning, but you are choosing a path that makes a statement: I can leave now that I have cashed out.

A Bird In The Hand May Fly Away

I m not a psychiatrist, but I am a student of human behavior with several decades of casino gaming experience. I don’t know of any studies on ticket-in or ticket-out psychology, but being the gambling man I am, I’d bet there are excellent reasons to visit the cage to cash out your chips and tickets during a day of gaming.

When you cash out, you’ll have a definitive number for how much you have spent. If you are behind, you may still feel comfortable returning to the tables or hitting the slots (please, not literally) again. And if you are ahead, you’ll clear your mind, feel a rush, and perhaps your gaming funny bone will be tickled enough to call it a day.

Or you might put away part of your bankroll and only risk some of what you left the cage with. I’m not preaching but offering options.

I love knowing I’m ahead occasionally and hate giving back any of my profits. I justify gaming by admitting I like it, control it, and quit when necessary. To that end, I enjoy cashing out my chips even if I’m behind no final wagers.

I know I’ve said it before, but dare to hit the cage! $

TABLE GAMES

A GAME NOT TO PLAY

3 To 2 Versus 6 To 5

Ijust returned from Las Vegas and was amazed by the number of casinos with rules that pay 6 to 5 for Blackjack instead of 3 to 2. It seems that they are trying to make this the normal rule. If you have any doubt that you shouldn't play 6 to 5 Blackjack, let me explain because some Arizona Casinos are adapting this rule.

Here is some straightforward math everyone can get behind, 3 to 2 = 1.5 and 6 to 5 = 1.2. This means you will receive 25% more when you get Blackjack at 3 to 2 than you will at 6 to 5.

The chances of the player getting a winning Blackjack, meaning the Dealer doesn't get one as well, are 1 in 21 hands. If the Player is playing 3 to 2 Blackjack instead of 6 to 5 he will win 0.25 times his bet more. So if he’s playing 6 to 5 Blackjack instead of 3 to 2 he’s giving the Casino an extra 1.36% of his wager.

With the inclusion of rules like: Dealer hits soft 17, double after split allowed, player may double on any two cards, surrender is allowed, re-splitting Aces is allowed, with correct basic strategy and Blackjack paying 3 to 2, the house advantage is 0.46%. But if we change that Blackjack pays 6 to 5, with all other rules remaining the same, the house edge jumps to 1.82%, that’s almost four times as high for the same game. You have to ask yourself is this game worth four times more?

For example, a $10 per hand player under the rules above at a 3 to 2 Blackjack table can expect to lose $3.31 per hour, but at a 6 to 5 Blackjack table can expect to lose $13.10 per hour. A $25 per hand player can expect to lose $8.28 per hour at a 3 to 2 table and $32.76 at a 6 to 5 table. A $50 per hand player can expect to lose $16.56 per hour at a 3 to 2 Blackjack table and a whopping $65.52 per hour at a 6 to 5 Blackjack table. So, as you can see, the more you wager per hand, the larger the house takes on 6 to 5 Blackjack as it would on a 3 to 2 Blackjack table. The Casinos are trying to make 6 to 5 Blackjack the norm.

You may ask, “What can one player do to make a difference?” The answer is, “Don't play!” If you make it a point to ask, “What does Blackjack pay at this table?” and if you get an answer of, “6 to 5!” refuse to play. If enough players would do this Casinos would have no choice but to go back to 3 to 2 Blackjack.

The average player won't win at a 6 to 5 table. You need to play where you at least have a chance to win. So if you find yourself at a Casino where Blackjack pays 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2, do yourself and everyone else a favor and go somewhere where they have 3 to 2 Blackjack. You will at least have a chance at winning. After all, it is more fun to win than it is to lose! $

SoMuch.SoClose.

With all of your favorite casino games, four restaurants, a relaxed atmosphere, 166 spacious guest rooms and suites, a pool that includes a lazy river, and world-class entertainment, Quechan Casino Resort is your perfect destination. You’ll enjoy every minute of your visit!

Whether you are a first-time, regular or regional casino enthusiast, make sure to put Quechan Casino Resort in Winterhaven, California on your must-visit list! This amazing, Las Vegas-style casino resort is only a few miles West of Yuma, a quick 15 minute drive for locals. If you’re coming from the Phoenix Valley, or from Tucson, you’ll be there in half the time it would take you to get to Vegas and with a lot less hassle. The short, comfortable drive on the I-8 is much more calm and sparse.

Plus, their sister property Paradise Casino is located in Yuma so you have even more excitement to experience during your visit with twice the action and twice the fun. Both Quechan Casino Resort and Paradise Casino are owned and operated by the Fort Yuma Quechan (Kwatsáan) Indian Tribe. Their reservation is located along both sides of the Colorado River near Yuma with a long and rich history in the area. The Tribe opened Paradise Casino in August of 1996 and opened Quechan Casino Resort in February of 2009.

The staff at the Arizona Gaming Guide has been traveling to both Quechan Casino Resort and Paradise Casinos since the inception of our publication over 15 years ago, so we’re very familiar with both properties. As avid casino enthusiasts and players ourselves, Quechan is at the top of our list as an out-of-town destination and we’ll let you in on some little known secrets about why we call this casino our gem in Yuma’s desert oasis.

As an added benefit during our last couple visits, members of our team had the opportunity to engage with representatives of the Executive Team from several different departments. How these Directors interacted with not only our team members, but also with each other and their employees, just reinforced why Quechan and Paradise Casinos are different and why we love these properties. The top executives at these two casinos are not corporate suits but rather down-to-earth people who truly love their jobs, take the time to understand their patrons and want to provide the best possible guest experience they can. And, how would they begin to understand about the ’guest experience’? Because they are willing to take the time to sit in a casino and play, dine at an outlet, and see things from the perspective of

the customer. That’s what sets them and their two casinos apart.

It was refreshing to hear Ismael Barrera, the Director of Slots, say he wants guests to experience “more bang for their buck” and also explain why it’s important for their casino to be the first to offer their patrons the latest and greatest slots. Barrera, himself, enjoys playing slots from time to time, so he really understands why there needs to be a good mix of new games as well as some tried and true favorites. He wants to “be the first to market” with as many slots as possible because he knows that slot players love to try new games and they deserve to have those experiences. Specifically, guests can expect slots from Aristocrat (makers of Dragon Link, Buffalo, NFL, etc.) and Bluberi (makers of Shark’s Lock, etc.) to appear at Quechan Casino Resort well before anywhere else in the surrounding area.

The slot floor is one of the many, many reasons our team loves to escape to Quechan Casino Resort. There are always games on the floor by slot manufacturers that we haven’t seen at other properties and the selection is amazing! There’s truly a slot for everyone. And, here’s one little secret … We believe guests may find their bankroll (like ours) lasting longer with a less volatile experience at Quechan. After several play sessions, visitors will begin to notice the difference in their overall gaming excursion, especially when compared to their visits to other properties. Remember, casinos can’t control a guest’s luck on any one game during an isolated trip, but the Executive Team at Quechan Casino Resort strongly believes their vision of a guest’s repeated, positive experience on the casino floor is what they have implemented in their available slots as well as across the amenities at the entire property.

Like Barrera and the rest of the Executive Team, Chris Duran, the Director of Gaming Operations, has years of experience in gaming and a tremendous amount of knowledge of the industry. When asked what sets his two properties apart he’s quick to reply, “We provide a comfortable getaway experience with a personal touch allowing guests to relax and not have to fight for a slot machine or a seat at the tables. There are options on the (Continued on page 22)

(Continued from page 21)

casino floor for every type of player. The drive is short and easy on the I-8. Both Quechan and our sister property, Paradise Casino, are 100% smoke-free. Moving forward we plan to be first in the market with all new slot games. And, it’s great because Quechan is just over the California border, so we enjoy all the benefits of that gaming jurisdiction and Paradise, in Yuma, is part of Arizona’s Gaming Compact so you’ll find our sports betting options there.” [Editor’s Note: California currently doesn’t have legalized sports betting but the situation may change in the future.]

In addition to an amazing slot floor, Quechan Casino Resort also offers a variety of table games 24-7 in a fun, fast paced setting with a local and hometown vibe. In speaking with Athan Farrar, the Director of Table Games, one thing that he stressed several times was the exceptional level of customer service provided by his team. “All of the dealers and staff are extremely friendly, they get to know the players, and really focus on providing a high level of customer service each patron deserves.” You’ll find Blackjack, Three Card Poker, Pai Gow Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em at Quechan. Craps and Roulette are also offered via multiple electronic table game set-ups from the manufacturer Interblock. “We offer competitively low table minimums but allow for high limit wagers as well,” added Farrar.

And if the incredible selection of slots is not enough to convince you to take the short drive to Quechan Casino Resort, or their low table game minimums, then floating in an inner tube down their lazy river and rejuvenating at their outdoor water oasis should. After some exciting gaming action, you can experience peak relaxation by the pool or catch an act at one of the hottest entertainment venues around, the Pipa Event Center. This hot spot hosts a range of artists and shows all year long.

Senior Marketing & Entertainment Manager Mark Benevento said, “I want to make sure the Pipa Event Center at Quechan Casino Resort continues to be the top entertainment destination in the region. We want to be known for showcasing a diverse

selection of entertainers from comedians to all genres of performers. We strive to provide memorable evenings for our guests during their visits with us.” Benevento brings his extensive experience and connections within the entertainment industry to the property. Upcoming concerts include Los Hurricanes Del Norte, Los Ángeles Azules, and Intocable.

For us at the AZ Gaming Guide, all of the above is very important, but here’s another secret why our team looks forward to each trip to Quechan Casino Resort … their dining outlets. Trust us when we tell you, the minute you sit down to eat you will experience the wow factor! The food is amazing, the prices are affordable and the portion sizes are INCREDIBLE! And, guess what? They have a buffet! Because, let’s just be honest, you’re really not a casino unless you offer a buffet, right? During your next visit, we hope you enjoy the top-notch steakhouse experience at Ironwood (One of our favorite orders is: Maryland Style Crab Cakes, House Salad, Prime Rib with House Bacon and Scallops, plus a side of Sautéed Asparagus tossed in a Hazelnut Brown Butter), value pricing on menu items, not just at Ironwood, but at all their food outlets including Sidewinders (the Loaded Nachos are massive!), the Gila Blend Food Court (try the Carne Asada Fries and a Starbucks Coffee) and the Ocotillo Buffet (Seafood Buffet Friday & Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m.).

Quechan Casino Resort and Paradise Casino Chief Executive Officer, Charles B Montague, Sr. added, “At Quechan Casino Resort and Paradise Casino, our mission has always been to provide a welcoming, high-quality experience that reflects the pride and heritage of the Quechan Tribe. We’re constantly evolving to offer our guests the latest in gaming, entertainment, and hospitality without sacrificing the personal touch that sets us apart. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, we want you to feel like family every time you walk through our doors.”

ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF GAMING CPA:

Rise In Fraudulent Online Casinos Targeting Arizonans!

The Arizona Department of Gaming (“ADG”) is issuing this Consumer Protection Alert to inform Arizonans of a concerning nationwide trend that has now reached Arizona. Fraudulent operators are falsely claiming that legitimate Arizona casinos have launched online gaming platforms. These illegal online casino platforms are presenting themselves as legitimate platforms by offering illegitimate or illegal gaming services. Online casinos (often referred to as “igaming”) are not legal in Arizona. Any claims otherwise should be treated as highly suspicious. These scams not only put players at financial risk but also undermine the integrity of Arizona’s regulated gaming industry.

ADG has received multiple reports of fraudulent online casinos targeting Arizonans, as well as complaints from patrons who have been misled. These scams are being widely disseminated through social media advertisements directing consumers to download apps and visit websites, and are enticing unsuspecting consumers to spend money on illegitimate games.

The ADG urges residents to verify the legitimacy of any online gaming platform before engaging in play. Many of these operations are not legal or regulated, leaving users vulnerable to fraud, identity theft, and other serious risks. Due to their unregulated nature, ADG is unable to resolve complaints and disputes arising from unregulated and illegal gaming sites, leaving victims with little to no chance of recovering lost funds. It is important to remember that just because you can download the app, visit the website, and play the games, it does not mean it is a legitimate and legal gaming platform.

In light of these developments, the Department encourages both Arizona residents and visitors to visit their website to find a list of all regulated casinos and licensed event wagering and fantasy sports operators legally taking bets in Arizona. The list can be found on the Department’s website at gaming.az.gov. Legal, regulated operations provide important consumer protections not found in the illegal market, helping ensure a safer experience for participants.

The Dangers of Illegal Online Casinos: Fraudulent online casinos often mimic reputable platforms, using familiar branding, flashy advertisements, and enticing promotions to lure victims. These unregulated operations leave participants vulnerable to financial loss through fake gaming platforms or fraudulent prize fees, identity theft resulting from shared personal or finan-

cial information. Common red flags of illegal platforms include deceptive tactics such as mimicking branding of legitimate Arizona casinos, including similar or actual logos and names, enticing promotions that appear too good to be true, such as excessive bonuses or guaranteed wins, luring players into providing sensitive information, or incorrect website urls and mobile apps. Fraudulent sites often use web addresses that closely mimic legitimate casino names but have slight misspellings or different domain extensions (e.g., .net instead of .com).

Consumers can protect themselves by verifying the licensed and regulated casinos and operators in Arizona, by being skeptical of advertisements or promotions on social media promising guaranteed wins or no-risk gaming, by avoiding sharing personal or financial information with unverified sources, and by looking for sites that include resources for dispute resolution, as well as self-exclusion, responsible gaming messaging, or a tollfree helpline number.

Reporting Suspicious Activity, Fraud, or Identity Theft: If you encounter fraud, identity theft, or suspicious online gaming operations, apps, or websites impersonating a casino or claiming to be a licensed operator in Arizona, please take the following steps: 1. Document the website URL, app, business name, and any promotional materials associated with the fraudulent operator. 2. Report it to ADG at publicaffairs@azgaming.gov and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office Consumer Information and Complaints Unit at (602) 542-5763 or by visiting azag.gov/consumer. 3. Cease activity on the platform and monitor financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. If you suspect identity theft, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”): for help in English, go to IdentityTheft.gov and for help in Spanish, go to RobodeIdentidad.gov.

ADG takes complaints about all illegal gambling seriously. To report suspected illegal gambling activity of any type, visit their website at gaming.az.gov/about/contact-us, call (602) 255-3886, or email publicaffairs@azgaming.gov. You can remain anonymous. $

About ADG: Established by the Arizona State Legislature in 1995, ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming, event wagering & fantasy sports contests, racing and pari-mutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports. Ernie Stevens Jr. Elected For 13th Term As Chairman Of The Indian Gaming Association

Ernie Stevens Jr. has been re-elected by acclamation to serve his 13th term as Chairman of the Indian Gaming Association (IGA). Running unopposed, he received unanimous support from tribal leadership, reinforcing their confidence in his leadership.

Stevens expressed profound gratitude to the leadership: "From day one of my Chairmanship, my commitment has been unwavering my work is my campaign, always inspired and guided by our tribal leadership.”

He added, “For 24 years, I have remained steadfast, and I will not unpack my bags for the next two years either. Kids Quest Closes At Cliff Castle Casino Hotel Online Petition Wants To Keep It Open

The Cliff Castle Casino and Yavapai Apache Nation recently announced that Kids Quest® has decided to close as of Sunday, April 27, 2025. Kids Quest is a play destination for children ages 2 years old through 12 years old.

“Kids Quest has made the decision to cease operation at Cliff Castle Casino, and we respect their decision and would like to thank the Kids Quest organization, for being such great business partners since our relationship began,” said James Thomason, General Manager of Cliff Castle Casino Hotel.

“We appreciate the ongoing service provided to our guests offering great family-friendly entertainment and a unique amenity for the resort.”

“We are truly thankful for all the support of the entire Cliff Castle Casino team has provided Kids Quest over the past 26 years and will always have a fondness for the Cliff Castle Casino Hotel team and for the Yavapai Apache Nation,” said Troy Dunkley, Chief Executive Officer at Kids Quest.

More information on Kids Quest, as well as their locations, can be found online at KidsQuest.com.

Longtime Kids Quest patron at the casino location, Cyrus Coriz, began a petition at Change.org/CliffCastleCasino in a growing effort to preserve a key family-friendly space at the casino. The online effort at Change.org asks Cliff Castle to reverse plans on the closure. Petition signers say Kids Quest is vital to the property's unique appeal and accessibility for families. Kids Quest at Cliff Castle Casino offered drop-in childcare for kids 6 weeks to 12 years old giving parents a safe, supervised option while visiting the casino.

Cyrus says these aren’t just conveniences they’re core to what made Cliff Castle a standout in the region. The petition includes personal stories from people who grew up visiting the casino with loved ones, calling Kids Quest a safe haven. Petition signers are urging management to reconsider the closure.

At press time, the petition had over 200 verified signatures. The Arizona Gaming Guide reached out to Mr. Coriz for comment and according to Mr. Coriz, no one from either business

had reached out to him regarding his petition.

The Arizona Gaming Guide wants to make our readers aware that while the petition at Change.org mentions Johnny Rockets to be closing as well, that information is not correct according to representatives from Cliff Castle Casino Hotel.

New Mega Millions Has Arrived In Arizona

2X-10X Bigger Prizes, Better Odds, $50 Million Starting Jackpot & More!

Lowest-Tier Winners Now Take Home $10-$50 vs. $2 Before

Lottery players in Arizona can now experience the new version of Mega Millions, the lottery game that has produced a record seven jackpot wins exceeding $1 billion, all won in different states. The game will feature bigger prizes at every non-jackpot prize tier, better odds to win the jackpot, better odds overall, larger starting jackpots, and faster-growing jackpots.

“Mega Millions offers Arizona Lottery players big dreams and big wins, and the evolution of the game promises more excitement and bigger, more frequent wins in Arizona,” said Alec Thomson, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery. “We are excited to offer the updated game to our players and start celebrating even more wins in Arizona, while continuing to fund vital state programs and services that benefit communities across the state through ticket sales.”

A full prize matrix is available at the Arizona Lottery’s website. Other game enhancements benefitting players include:

Improved Overall Odds

Overall odds to win any prize will improve to 1:23 from 1:24 due to the removal of one gold Mega Ball from the game.

Improved Odds To Win The Jackpot

Odds to win the jackpot will improve to 1:290,472,336 from 1:302,575,350 due to the removal of one gold Mega Ball from the game. The new game will feature 24 Mega Balls instead of the 25 in the current game.

Larger Starting Jackpots

Following a jackpot win, the starting jackpot will reset to $50 million instead of the current $20 million.

Faster-Growing Jackpots & Bigger Jackpots More Frequently Jackpots are expected to grow faster and get to higher dollar amounts more frequently in the new game. The Mega Millions

Consortium estimates that the average jackpot win in the new game will be more than $800 million vs. approximately $450 million in the current game.

2X-10X Prize Increase With Built-In Random Multiplier

Every non-jackpot win will multiply its base prize by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X automatically. Prizes in the new game will range from $10 to $10 million vs. the $2 to $1 million in the current game.

Win More Than The Cost To Play

With a minimum prize of $10 on a winning ticket in the new game, every winning ticket will pay out at least double the $5 cost for each play. In the current game, the minimum prize on a winning ticket and cost to play are the same: $2.

With higher value prizes embedded throughout every tier of the game, tickets for the new Mega Millions game will increase to $5 per play. This is only the game’s second price adjustment since the first ticket was sold more than 20 years ago and the first change since the current game matrix was adopted in 2017.

As part of the new game introduction, the “Megaplier” add on feature that has been available in Arizona for an additional $1 will be retired and replaced with the built-in multiplier.

Unless someone wins the jackpot, the jackpot from the current game will roll into the new game and continue to grow with ticket sales from the new game. Players who have a winning ticket that was issued for a drawing prior to the game change and who claim their prize by the deadline set by their participating lottery will be paid based on the prize matrix in effect during the time of the drawing for their ticket, regardless of when the prize is claimed.

Since Mega Millions launched in 2002, it has produced seven winners of billion-dollar jackpots, all in different states. Since the last change in 2017 more than 1,200 players have become millionaires, an average of three millionaires per week.

Mega Millions is a national game with tickets sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are conducted at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia.

Lottery profits support a wide variety of good causes and are allocated differently in each jurisdiction. For more information visit ArizonaLottery.com. $

The Marías Submarine Tour

Casino Del Sol July 17

The Marías are the Grammy-nominated psychedelic-soul lovechild of Puerto Rican-bred, Atlanta-raised María Zardoya and Los Angeles native, Josh Conway. The two are joined by their closest friends, Jesse Perlman on guitar and Edward James on keys. Their undeniably intuitive musical chemistry can be heard in the band’s smooth rendezvous of jazz percussion, hypnotic guitar riffs, smoke-velvet vocals and nostalgic horn solos. There’s something undeniably sensual in their dreamlike fusion of jazz, psychedelia, funk and lounge. Since the release of their debut album, Cinema, The Marías have earned the reputation behind their impressive upward trajectory, including two Grammy nominations, a Billboard chart-topper and collaborations with some of the biggest names in Latin music, including Bad Bunny and Tainy.

The Submarine Tour (Extended) announcement follows the release of recent singles “Back to Me” & “Nobody New.” Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of “Back to Me” since the band initially teased it during their run opening for Billie Eilish last winter & “Nobody New” came as a surprise B-side. “Back to Me” marks the bands biggest solo debut to date globally and the two new tracks come ahead of the band’s return to the desert to perform at Coachella last month. Recently, The Marías were featured on Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco’s new track, “Ojos Tristes.” Reviewed as a standout track from the album, the band is also credited as producers and songwriters. “Ojos Tristes” garnered over 20 million global streams in less than a week of release. DRINKS WHILE GAMBLING AT THE BAR

Chasing My Friend’s Husband Out The Door in Las Vegas...

This month I wanted to squeeze in a story that just happened to a friend of mine and her husband. I know, I told some of my fans they’d be in an upcoming issue. I’ll get to your stories as well, I promise! This one was just a little too interesting not to put out there immediately. Especially since all I’m hearing from our readers and fans is that they are forgoing trips to Las Vegas for their local Tribal casinos. For many reasons, as Las Vegas is too far, the drive sucks, the rooms and the food and the entertainment are too expensive, the service is poor, everything looks dingy and dirty, most places are closed when you want to go, etc. But this story from my good friend went a little too far, or did it? Let me know!

[Editor’s Note: Katarina’s] Experience: I was playing at one of my favorite strip casinos that we’ve been coming to for years. My husband [Editor’s Note: Kevin], and the rest of our families came too. They don’t gamble as much as I do, but hey, it’s Vegas baby! So, all of us cut loose a little. I was on a hot game which was letting me play so we postponed lunch for a while. My husband, who plays a little of everything and can make himself at home in almost any casino, “sauntered” (John Wayne anyone?) up to the center bar to play some Video Keno and indulge in a popular low-carb and lowcalorie malted barley alcoholic beverage (I know Sami’s editors tend to delete the names anyway so I omitted the brand of beer. You’ll just have to use some powers of deduction!). Apparently, a bartender approached my husband and said, “Hi! Are you going to try your luck on this game? That’s nice! What can I get you to drink?”

According to my husband, he had not yet put a (gasp!) $20 bill in the game (at a 30 seat bar where he was the only customer) and had not yet selected the Cleopatra Keno game (at the minimum 25-cent denomination). [Kevin], ordered the infamous brand of beer and a water and slapped a $2 tip on the bar immediately. Cheap? Maybe, but remember, there’s hardly any work involved and the beer in question costs less than $2 per bottle at major grocery stores. I’m certain the casino’s per bottle cost is well below $1. [Kevin] keeps playing away at 1 credit ($0.25) for about a half an hour. The game is letting him play. But, the beer is gone, as is the water. He’s thirsty! We all would be, right?

So the bartender comes over again and asks [Kevin], “I see you finished your beer, would you like another?” Now, put [Kevin] aside (fresh from a morning shower, light jacket, collared shirt, jeans, presentable sneakers and maybe a hint of cologne) for a

minute, what would anyone reply in this situation if asked?

Obviously it’s a “Yes, please!” while reaching for the wallet and another tip.

When the bartender comes back with the open beer he says, “Oh, you are playing quarter Video Keno. You have to be playing dollars otherwise it’s $12 per beer and I’ll charge you for the other beer.” Now, how would you react in this situation?

[Kevin] told me, “Granted, it’s Las Vegas. But, it’s a very cheap beer. I’m tipping. I didn’t ask for a pricey three-shot mixed concoction with an umbrella and citrus fruit. I’m the only customer at the bar. The bartender did not explain the conditions of the alcohol which he offered without me asking. There’s no sign to point to explaining the policy. The game is not set up to the correct minimum bet to be in line with the supposed policy. I don’t think I look like the average drink policy abuser. You did not look at my loyalty card. You don’t know how many people are in my party. You don’t know the loyalty level of the other people in my party (and for how long). Yet, you are threatening me with a $24 bar tab plus tax? Over cheap beer? That’s an interesting customer service strategy! I’m not sure if the bartender was doing this to impress the lone barback, the security cameras or if he was just having a bad day. But, I’m not coming back. And, I’m not playing at a bar anymore either. Plus, I’ll just form the opinion most employees in Las Vegas could care less about their customers. Maybe I shouldn’t blame the service employees, I’ll blame middle management, the top executives and the corporation ‘running’ the casino. Perhaps that’s why the employees are acting the way they are.”

That was [Kevin’s] reaction. Just leave and don’t come back. Of course, I disagree as it’s one of my favorite places to play. And, as [Kevin] identified, he can always just pretend to play $0.25 cents on an old slot in the corner while the cocktail waitress mindlessly serves him one cheap beer after the other for a $2 tip.

Please let me know what you think about this situation. I’m calling on all the casino executives to comment as well (yes, you can remain anonymous or ask not to have your response printed). As always, have fun and good luck! $

Jokes & Quotes

Research shows that laughing stimulates the immune system and may help prevent or reverse some medical conditions.

A woman brings her parrot to the vet. The parrot is stiff and lifeless.

"I'm sorry ma'am, but this parrot is dead!"

"How can you tell so quickly?" replies the woman, "Isn't there a way to be absolutely certain?"

So, the vet whistles and a beautiful black Labrador Retriever walks in the examining room. The Lab sniffs around the parrot for a few moments, then looks at the vet with sad eyes and shakes his head.

"A dog shakes its head and I'm supposed to believe that?" cries the woman. "You're going to have to do more to prove that my poor parrot is dead!"

So the vet leaves momentarily, comes back with a cat and puts it on the table beside the parrot. The cat looks closely at the parrot, walks around it, prods it a bit, then shakes his head and jumps off the table. Finally, the woman seems convinced. As she turns for the door, the vet announces that she owes him $500.

"$500?" the woman asks. "How in the world could it be that much just to tell me my parrot is dead?"

"Well, it would have been a lot cheaper, but with that lab report and cat scan..."

A dog walks into a bar, and takes a seat. He says to the bartender, “Can I have a tall draft and some peanuts please?” The barman says, “Wow, that's amazing! You should join the circus!” The dog replies, “Why? Do they need electricians?”
