“I like the Daniel Craig in ‘Skyfall’ the best,” said Morrell. “With blonde hair, he was just different ... more of a new-age Bond.”

One has one’s doubts whether Maegen Postiy of All Animal Clinic is actually old enough to substantiate her answer, but her favorite James Bond is Sean Connery.

“I like his bad boy persona,” said Postiy, as her friend Heather Chander-Cabrera whispered to her from around the corner.

“My favorite was ‘Goldsinger’ … I mean ‘Goldfinger.’”

Body Owners’ Tina Herbert says Sean Connery is the best Bond in her book. She can’t necessarily name the movies, but says those details are irrelevant.

“It’s definitely Sean Connery because of the accent,” said a blushing Herbert. “The charisma. The charm. He has it all.”

Herbert mentioned it doesn’t matter if it’s 1965 or 2015, she’s always open to a date with Sean Connery.

to kick off the standing-roomonly affair, while the Honorable Judge Scales used his customary blend of humor and grace to swear in each elected official.

The Key West City Commission welcomed newcomers Sam Kaufman of District 2, Margaret Romero of District 5 and Richard Payne who represents District 4.

All three were sworn in and took their chairs on the dais, joining Commissioners Jimmy Weekley, Clayton Lopez, Billy Wardlow

and Mayor Craig Cates.

“I want to tell the residents of Key West that I pledge to work hard to make a difference in this city,” said Sam Kaufman. “And I pledge to my fellow commissioners and city staff that I will always treat you with respect.

And I think that is the foundation on which we need to lay the ground work to accomplish great things.”

Two familiar faces on the Utility Board retained their positions. Eleven-year incumbent Mona Clark and 10-year incumbent Charlie Bradford were sworn back into office, with both pledging to continue their commitments to the city and people of Key West.

“I promise to do everything that is in the best interest of the people of our community,” said Mona Clark. “And have three years to continue the works that I think I have done and our board has done and I set out today to continue that work.”

Cates to run for fifth mayoral term It’s official. Craig Cates will be on the 2016 ballot for a potential fifth term as Mayor of Key West. After attending the city’s swearing-in of three new city commission members, Mayor Cates made his way to the Supervisor of Elections Office in Key West to ink his decision.

“I’m excited about the new Commission and I’m looking forward to working with them to keep Key West moving forward,” said Cates. “They are all motivated and that’s why I’m running again. I’m excited about finishing some projects like the Truman Waterfront and addressing the affordable housing issue with them.”

Other than “Sonny” McCoy, who served from 1971 to 1981, no other Key West Mayor has worked a fifth term.

Chamber to honor teachers

Donations sought to recognize education leaders Weekly Staff report

T

he Key West Chamber of Commerce is calling on local businesses to honor 22 local teachers. For more than 18 years, the Tom Sawyer Five Star Program, which is one of many of the chamber’s education initiatives, has recognized teachers from every local Key West public and charter school (along with Sugarloaf ) with an assortment of donated services and gifts.

The teachers will be selected by school principals to receive awards at one of three chamber membership luncheons—the first occurring on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Gifts and services are donated by local businesses in increments of $25 (per teacher) for a total donated value of $550. The goodies are distributed to teachers on the day of recognition, including items like oil changes, attraction tickets, retail vouchers, restaurant gift certificates, professional services and cash.

The program is rooted in 18 years of chamber education initiatives, which began when John and Georgia Parks initiated the “Honor Roll 100 program” in the late 1990s. In 2005, the program was named

“Education is the future of the community and it’s the foundation of our business community,” said Key West Chamber Exec VP Virginia Panico. “Key West is very diverse and most of us, depending on our interests at the time, belong to certain segments and we tend to get our own worlds. But we can never overlook education.

It is instrumental to everything we do as a community.”

Panico says the Tom Sawyer Teacher recognition is not only eye-opening for business and

community leaders, but it also allows teachers an opportunity to attend a chamber meeting and witness firsthand what the chamber does.

“A lot of people think the chamber is all about business,” said Panico. “But Key West is diverse. We have education, the arts, our gay community, snowbirds, and retirees and so on. It is always important that we support one another and understand that we all succeed together.”

The chamber spearheads more than six education programs, including scholarships, mentoring, classroom sponsors and more. The chamber is currently seeking donations from members and other community advocates who want to participate. Panico says this year’s initiative will not come without heartfelt remembrance, as the education committee pays tribute to the late Sharon Moore, who was instrumental to the program for many years.

t the last practice before this weekend’s two-mile Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Invitational set for Sunday, Oct. 18, athletes listened intently to volunteer Ruth Holland as she described the procedures for the weekend. For example, each Special Olympics Florida - Monroe County athlete will receive a raffle ticket for a prize (that doesn’t necessarily mean they will win, she explained) and as the host county the athletes should make sure that all of the visiting athletes feel welcome.

Linnea Edwards, a SUP athlete for the past four years, jumped up to demonstrate the proper way to introduce themselves to their fellow competitors. “Hi, I’m Linnea, welcome to Key West, what’s your name, we are so glad you are here,” she said without taking a breath, all with a wide, genuine smile.

to do it so bad,” Edwards said before taking off on her own SUP board to practice. “My parents said if I lost 50 pounds they would buy me a board, and I did.”

Sixty special athletes will be competing at the invitational alongside many locals who signed up for the fundraising race. Karen Moore, a local jewelry designer who owns ZEN, is signed up for the obstacle course and donated items to the raffle. “This is my first paddle event that I am personally taking part in, so I’m very excited about that,” she said.

“I love the spirit of the Special Olympics – they have such drive, dedication and that ‘I can do anything’ attitude. They inspire me.”

Moore’s business model includes donating and helping raise money for Special Olympics events in the Keys. In fact, she is collecting money to help sponsor two, three-person teams of special triathletes for March’s triathlon hosted by Florida Keys Community College.

Songstress makes a name in Key West

A

rmed with her acoustic guitar and a heavenly voice, Emily Springsteen is a new, up and coming musical performer in Key West delighting audiences wherever she plays.

In a relatively short time, Emily has become one of the busiest musicians in Key West.

Originally from Michigan, Emily’s first taste of Key West was while working on the Schooner Appledore V, while enrolled in an environmental education program. Those first impressions of Key West stuck in her mind and were strong enough to bring her back to Key West after she had returned home to Michigan. There she had been working at a native plant nursery focused on supporting ecological restoration and conservation projects. That work experience has given her a sense and desire for “keeping in tune with the environment.”

After arriving in Key West, Emily worked a couple of different jobs, but soon found herself following the vision and encouragement of her close friend Jenny. Emily decided to play

music and now feels blessed to be in a position where she is performing for other people, and able to touch them in a spiritual sense through her singing, with her voice. “I am mindful of accepting and learning from other people, and maintaining an environmental advocacy.”

She grew up in a musical family — her dad played guitar, and her mom and sister sang.

Smiling, Emily recalled, “We all sang four-part harmony driving up to the UP in Michigan.”

Listening to folk and world music influenced her musical taste. Emily played trumpet in the jazz band in high school, and later received a bachelors degree from Michigan State in Interdisciplinary Humanities.

“Everybody wants to know if I’m related to Bruce (Springsteen),” she said, laughing. With a wink, she said “You’ll have to ask him … I can be bossy.”

R

oostica is known for their wood-fired red or white pizza pies, but shaking drinks up behind the bar, Cayla Clancy, born and raised in Key West, likes to be known for her delicious Hemingway Daiquiri.

The drink is made with locally mixed Papa’s Pilar Silver Rum, maraschino liqueur, and lime and grapefruit juice. “It’s pretty popular because it is a locally owned rum,” said Clancy, “and, everyone loves Hemingway in the Keys.”

Clancy has been at Roostica for the past seven months, and likes that it is a family owned business. “It’s a fun atmosphere and I really love the people I work with,” she said.

She graduated Key West High School in 2005 and lived in Baltimore for enough time for her to realize it was way too cold and she wanted to be back in Key West. When she isn’t working, she’s sleeping or lounging by the pool.

The zombies are coming

C

alling all ghouls: it’s time to get your Zombie on with WeCycle’s sixth annual Zombie Bike Ride on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The popular pedaling promenade begins at 2 p.m. at Fort East Martello.

The parade’s new starting point at the Fort was initiated last year and helped accommodate the growing number of participants while also alleviating past year’s traffic congestion.

“We clearly hit a nerve in Key West with this event,” says event coordinator and WeCycle co-owner Evan Haskell, remarking on its success. “Every year it’s just been a matter of coping with the growth.”

Originally started in 2009 as an extension of WeCycle Bike Shop and a film project idea developed by event co-coordinator and WonderDog Productions Designer Marky Pierson, the home-grown, grass-roots cycling event included “about forty people,” says Haskell. “‘Ride a Bike & Change the World’ was at the core,” says Pierson, commenting on the initial event that focused on bicycle culture and promotion.

“Everyone was simply having a fun time riding the streets with close friends.”

Now, in its “Zombie” manifestation, the event has upwards of 7,000 costumed participants of all ages. Haskell and Pierson have woven in their love of Latin America’s “Day of the Dead” celebrations to help embrace the true spirit of Halloween.

“The Zombie Bike Ride embodies the creative culture and spirit the Florida Keys are known for,” says Key West Art & Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda, whose organization is steward to Fort East Martello.

The famed, four-mile pedaling parade of ghouls on wheels begins with an all-agewelcome, pre-event celebration beginning at 2 p.m. at the parade grounds on the far, east side of the Fort. Activities will include a concert, face painting, food vendors, beer and wine, and a special Kid’s Zone.

isitors can experience sights, sounds and flavors recalling Key West's Bahamian heritage at the family-friendly Goombay Festival, scheduled Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24.

The exuberant street festival takes place in the island city's Bahama Village neighborhood, settled in part by Bahamians seeking a new home in the early 1800s.

For more than 30 years, the Goombay Festival has marked the beginning of Key West's Fantasy Fest, a 10-day masking and costuming celebration whose 2015 revelry continues through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Goombay's high-energy action is centered on Petronia Street, just off Key West's famed Duval Street in the heart of Bahama Village. Events are to take place from noon to midnight both days, with an opening ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m.

wedish, deep, therapeutic, hot stone and reflexology come to mind when thinking of massage therapy. At Angelic Moon Holistic Day Spa, owner Donna Spencer uses a special technique to help clients fight cancer.

“I’m no stranger to cancer,” she said at her quaint studio located at MM 23 on Cudjoe Key. “People very close to me have been diagnosed with it. And it is so prevalent, that some of my clients needed modifications because of it.”

After an intensive advanced training in oncology massage and hundreds of hours of research, Spencer said she understands its benefits. “The power of touch is so healing,” she said showing the difference between a regular massage and an oncology massage. “It instills a sense of well-being and can be very comforting no matter which stage the cancer is in.”

Spencer modifies the massage according to the health of her client. She weighs whether the client’s cancer is active or in recovery, what stage they are in, and the site of the cancer.

“Everything is about site, pressure and position,” she said.

Eric Jones’ late wife Sherry, seasonal residents at Venture Out, went to Spencer for help with her discomfort from breast cancer. “Seriously, it did a lot for her quality of life,” he said, adding that Donna’s experience meant she was helping Sherry, not hurting her. “It was a late diagnosis, and her chances weren’t good, and she knew it. Donna was able to carefully and gently help her with the swelling.”

Sherry Jones suffered from lymphedema, a painful but common side effect from her cancer treatments. “Adapting traditional massage techniques is essential to prevent trigger-

ing or making lymphedema worse,” said Spencer, who has also worked with liver and lung cancer patients.

Usually positioned on their side, propped with pillows, bolsters, and towels, the pressure varies from a light to deep lotioning, to adding light pressure in areas that are not affected. Spencer works with the primary caregiver and talks with the doctor or nurse in charge of the patient’s care before starting oncology massage.

She is also very attentive to the fact that cancer patients can be hypersensitive to scents and uses hospital-grade, fragrancefree organic oils, lotions and shea butter.

Cancer survivor Deb Curlee of Cudjoe Key, said she doesn’t know what she would have done without Spencer’s magic when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. “The outlook was not good, and they literally threw everything at me,” she

said. She received chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation, five days a week, and couldn’t use over-the-counter products because of the heavy scents.

“My skin was dry and felt foreign to me. The scrub restored my skin as well as my spirits. I am so grateful to her, she’s an amazing healer.”

Sessions usually run about 20 to 30 minutes so as not to tire the client and until Oct. 24, Spencer is offering free oncology massages for those who are currently undergoing treatment or those who are in remission from any kind of cancer. This is the sixth year of participation in the annual Pink is Power campaign. Spencer is a preferred practitioner with the Society of Oncology Massage and her studio is wheelchair accessible.

According to cancer.org, some studies suggest massage can decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and pain, and increase alertness. The American Cancer Society says people with cancer might think about using complementary methods for a number of reasons: They’d like to relieve the side effects of mainstream cancer treatment without having to take more medicine.

They want to take an active role in improving their own health and wellness.

They prefer alternative theories of health and disease, as well as alternative treatments.

Registration for this noncompetitive, inspirational event begins at 7 a.m., opening ceremony is at 8 a.m., and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a powerful event to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer.

Since 1993, more than 11 million supporters have raised more than $685 million nationwide. Last year, more than 600 walkers in the Florida Keys helped to raise more than $90,000 to save the lives of those suffering from breast cancer.

Twenty-two enthusiastic citizens participated in the 12-week class to join more than 500 citizens who now have a better insight to the workings of city government. The Key West Ambassadors Academy was established in 2003 and is facilitated by volunteers, all of whom graduated the program. Coronation ball set for next Friday Contributed

he Coronation Ball, the capper to the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest is set for Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at Southernmost On The Beach.

It is on that evening that a final party, with the Atlantic surf the soundtrack and a Friday night sky going South Florida violet, will determine who becomes 2015’s reigning Royalty and preside over the Fantasy Fest Parade.

Vicky Shields, Mark Watson, Cameron Zbikowski and Jodyrae Campbell have worked tirelessly as goodwill ambassadors for AIDS Help (the benefiting organization) for eight weeks of frenzied, frisky, feisty and always fabulous fundraising events Keys-wide, assisted by a corps of volunteers, to raise the most money and ascend to the throne.

Special events ranged from a weekly ‘Aqua Idol’ competition to upstairs Sunday BINGO at the 801 Bourbon Bar and the third annual Red Shirt Run, held Sept. 26.

ewly revamped space at Fort East Martelloce at at Fort East Martello will provide a year-round, child-centered learning environment with a diverse array of workshops for school aged children. Its newest program — Islands of History — designed specifically for Monroe County School professional days and holidays.

“In Monroe County, children spend 180 days at school each year. Given this, parents find it challenging to find constructive educational activities for their children” says KWAHS Education Specialist Adele Williams. “We would like to fill that void with programs that enhance creativity, innovation, and cross-disciplinary thinking.”

With the opening of the new Imagination Institute and the programs that will reside within it, the Society hopes to provide the community with “a new educational landscape” says Williams, and will

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you?

I am the captain of the swim team and wrestling team, a chief in NJROTC, the president of the senior class and a member of National Honor Society and Beta Club. These organizations are important to me because they teach me responsibility, strength and leadership that helps prepare me for the future.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why?

Coach Judd Wise has been my biggest inspiration at KWHS because, as my swim coach, he has taught me to balance school, extra-curricular activities and free time.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

Team sports and peer counseling because they teach me leadership and fellowship as well as allowing and reminding me that school can be enjoyable and not all work.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

I think Key West’s small community forces everyone to know everyone and their business. This causes students to become victims of teachers and parents hearing exaggerated stories that in turn make students not allowed to participate or enjoy a lot of what Key West has to offer.

What are your plans after high school?

I’m planning on going to University of Miami or University of Florida on the ROTC scholarship. I intend on doing four year pre-med before entering my five years in the U.S. Marine Corps and leading men to battle for five years and then return for medical school.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

I will definitely consider it because I love parts of the community and will leave behind many friends, but I intend on becoming a trauma surgeon and I feel my talents would be better in a larger city where I can help more people.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … priorities are very important, but letting off steam and having fun from time to time is also important and completely natural and normal and should not be something regulated and frowned upon.
