The days leading up to the summer solstice, Tuesday, June 20, are going to be scorchers, so get your sunscreen ready. It’s been a hot debate (pun intended), amongst Upper Keys locals as to when summer truly starts, however. Just for clarification, the Weekly asked ….

When does summer officially begin? “Begin? Down here I feel like it’s summer year round,” said Alexis Tarafa, of Lorelei Cabana Bar and Restaurant. She has a good point.

Dan Earle, manager at Skipper’s Dockside, knows summer is officially here when, “My eyelids and ears start to sweat as I’m poling around on my skiff.”

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Our Eclectic Menu includes

Gourmet Appetizers & Main Courses Homemade Specialty Pizzas

Trying to staying cool underneath the tiki hut, Dan Smith of Key Largo responded, “When I start dripping sweat without having to move.” Dan works in construction, he would know.

Gabriela Hernandez, of Islamorada Fish Company, said its summer when “the graduation parties end and tourists start traveling down. We always get packed, which is good.”

Fresh Seafood

Our Menu Evolves with the Seasons insuring the finest and freshest ingredients

“You know what lets me know that it’s summer? When the traffic starts,” laughed Samantha Hickory.

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JUNE 10, 2016

A 200-foot long, 60-inch in diameter culvert was installed in April under a roadway and private property connecting two portions of Canal #277 in Tropical Bay Estates on Big Pine Key.

Canal restoration showing success

M Contributed

onroe County just completed an air curtain installation that blocks weeds from entering Big Pine Key’s Canal #287, one of the Keys’ 131 poor-rated canals. This marks the end of the construction phase of the County’s original $5-million investment in demonstration projects that implemented four different restoration methods – air curtain weed gate installation, organic muck removal, culvert installation and backfilling – to restore six of the worst water quality canals in unincorporated Monroe County. Water quality monitoring is underway to scientifically evaluate the results of each demonstration restoration. The three-year program, conducted by Florida International University and funded by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, included one year of monitoring prior to construction to set a baseline and two years of monitoring following the restoration to determine success. The initial post-construction monitoring results are promising. They show improved dissolved oxygen levels and clarity, as well as an increase in sea life. “We are pleased that the early results show the restored canals are helping to bring back marine life,” Monroe County Sustainability Director Rhonda Haag said. “We already have learned much from each type of project and still have more demo projects to complete to test new methods. It is a massive undertaking to clean up all the canals in the Keys that don’t meet the state minimum standards of

water quality, and these demo projects will help us determine the most cost effective way to do so.” Canal restoration became a priority for the County after a study completed in 2013 by Amec Foster Wheeler Florida found that 311 of the 502 canals throughout the island chain do not meet the State’s minimum water quality criteria. Of the 311 impaired canals, 131 of them were rated poor. “For 18 years as a Monroe County Commissioner, not a work day has gone by without discussing and dealing with water quality – whether dealing with the central collection of waste water and treatment, storm water runoff, and now, degraded water quality in the hundreds of canals that crisscross our county,” Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent said. “The threat is real to our near shore waters, the same waters that drive our tourist-based economy. And due to the growing popularity of the island chain, we are loving our Keys to death.” While the new wastewater systems have improved water quality in the Keys, they do not address the root cause of problematic, man-made canals — years of accumulated seaweed, canals dug too deep, little to no circulation and dead end canals. The Canal Restoration program began in 2012, when Monroe County was awarded grants from the state DEP and federal EPA to create a plan. After extensive fieldwork, the plan was completed in 2014, with the Board of County Commissioners approving a $5 million series of canal restoration demonstration projects using infrastructure sales tax funds. In 2016, an additional $2 million was added to the canal restoration demonstration projects. This money, which also comes from the infrastructure sales tax, will be for projects using additional techniques — muck removal, backfilling, and in-place aeration techniques. The County is awaiting receipt of $450,000 in Gulf Coast Restoration Trust funds that were approved by the RESTORE (Deepwater Horizon oil spill) committee to be used for canal restoration projects. The County also anticipates state funds from the new Florida Keys Stewardship Bill.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JUNE 10, 2016

Florida Bay Forever exec provides insight on seagrass die-off, eco-tourism and the politics behind round nacho chips JASON KOLER

jason@keysweekly.com

Originally from central Ohio, Capt. Elizabeth Jolin arrived in the Keys about 22 years ago with a degree in communications and background in market research. She and her husband, Capt. Xavier Figueredo own and operate Bay and Reef Co. and are among the many activists advocating for the Florida Bay. You are the first official employee of the newly formed conservation group, Florida Bay Forever. How did you get this unpaid job? That is the story of my life! You create a vacuum and then you fill it. The timing is right and its important work that needs to be done. I want to protect our environment and be able to live here for another 50 years. The mission statement of the Florida Bay Forever is to “call on policymakers to take immediate action toward Everglades restoration.” What exactly is the group trying to accomplish? It’s a group that is demanding for land to be purchased south of Lake Okeechobee, so that clean, fresh water can be sent to the Florida Bay. What are the biggest challenges we are facing to restore and protect the Bay? The biggest challenge is politics. Everglades Restoration is all about politics and if we don’t speak up — and get involved politically — and tell our legislators what we want — we will not be able to live and work here in the Keys. What is the number one message that is not getting to the public regarding the seagrass die off? The only reason any of us have jobs down here is because of this beautiful resource. We have to speak up about this problem, communicate with our legislators and get everyone involved. Nothing will change unless we demand it. What is the most frequently asked question from your customers at the Reef and Bay Company? “How is the fishing?” We answer: “Fishing is great in the Florida Keys. You’re going to love it.” How has the tourism industry evolved over the past 20 years? Fishing down here 20 years ago used to be for men only. Over time, the women started realizing they were missing out on something amazing and they started to join that vacation. Today tourism is all about mom, kids and, oh, dad too. What do you like best about your job? Being in, on, and under the water! Has your life ever been in danger? Yes, often. Maybe less often recently. I might be maturing, not sure. What did you do in your previous life? In Washington, D.C. I worked in at a market research firm. The reason I left there was because I was setting up focus groups to find out if nacho chips should have rounded or pointed corners. I just couldn’t bear it. Who serves the best fish sandwich? Keys Fishery!

2Q 0 uestions with

ELIZABETH JOLIN

Do you believe in aliens? Doesn’t everyone? Ketchup or mustard? Ketchup. I carry a bottle on board at all times. What is your worst kept secret? I have an opinion (about pretty much everything). What is your Pet Peeve? Self-important people. Come on! Love your neighbor! If you could have cocktails with one person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you drink? Milkshakes with my little daughter! Finish these sentences… The Keys are … paradise. I know, I know … it’s trite, but so true. Ohio is … wholesome; good people start out there. Everybody needs … To learn to take a few deep breaths every once in a while. And if they can’t do that, just spend some time floating in the ocean with their eyes closed. Compromise is … life saving. Teaching a kid to boat is like … giving a kid a Swiss Army knife for Christmas. It’s a great tool with awesome bells and whistles until you slice your finger with that corkscrew.

Casino night raises Take Stock funds KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

K

ey West Rotary Club prides itself as being a volunteer club raising money for everything under the sun, but the annual casino night is the one time when most of the members can just sit back with a glass of wine and shoot some dice and play some cards. “We work our butts off all year,” said Casino Night organizer and co-chair Jessica Cranney, who will be found with a stack of chips in front of her at the black jack tables this weekend. “This is a stress free event.” Last year’s Mardi Gras themed event raised $17,000 for Rotary scholarships. This year, the money raised will be going toward Take Stock in Children Monroe County scholarships. Cranney, who has been a Take Stock mentor for the past three years, is a big supporter of the nonprofit. “All funds are matched by the state dollar for dollar,” said Take Stock Program Coordinator Chuck Licis. “So everything this raises will be doubled for scholarships for Monroe County students. We are very appreciative of Rotary for doing this.” Professional level casino games

The Second Annual Rotary Casino Night “Denim and Diamonds” will be held on Saturday, June 11 starting at 7 p.m. at Key West Marriott Beachside. Pre-purchased tickets are $75 (call 305-7734016) or pay $100 at the door. This will also be the last evening to purchase a ticket to win a 2016 Nissan Altima or $10,000 cash. Limited tickets are available for $100 each.

Puppy Prosthetics Pet orthotics give local ‘good boy’ mobility GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ike most puppies, Moon has an insatiable curiosity about the outside. His favorite hobby in particular is chasing lizards. The fivemonth-old beagle mix gets along with all the other dogs at the dog park, too. “He loves dogs, people, and life in general,” said Diana Bassett, a first grade teacher at Key Largo School and Moon’s foster mom. But Moon is a little different. He has no paws on either of his hind legs. “When he came to us, his paws were bloody nubs,” said Kat Spiegel, rescue coordinator at Marvelous Pet Rescue in the Upper Keys. “We had to clean up his wounds and focus on keeping his legs from developing infections.” The cause of Moon’s physical condition is unknown to this point — Kat said it could have been a birth defect or an injury. After he was rescued, staff had to ask themselves some hard questions about Moon’s quality of life. Three professionals recommended euthanasia as an alternative to a painful life of immobility. But Kat and Diana kept looking for answers while encouraging Moon in his “therapy” to keep him strong. Then they found veterinarian Marta Sanchez of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in Miami. She has 11 years of experience in this specialized work of fitting animals with prosthetics. “He had very strong stumps and the length was adequate enough to make him a good candidate for orthotics,” said Sanchez. “When he came to me, he was two months old. We had to wait on X-rays to confirm he had no protruding bones or fragments. The concern was pain he may have felt when putting weight on the orthotic.” There was a sense of urgency for his new appendage to work. “If he rejected the orthotic, we would have been left with minimal options. The day he put on his slippers he started walking around within moments. There were a lot of tears and excitement,” said Diana. With the slippers working, Moon is “He had very strong now able to run and swim. For now, he stumps and the wears his “Rambo slippers” three times length was adequate a day for two hours until he’s acclimated to the prosthetics. Moon underenough to make him stands his limitations and, without the a good candidate for slippers, stays on the soft surfaces of orthotics,” furniture. They are the first set Moon will have as he grows to maturity. —Marta Sanchez “He’ll probably have one more set of orthotics until he is grown enough

to be fitted for his permanent prosthesis,” said Kat of Marvelous Pet Rescue. Being a special needs dog will require attentive care from an owner. Prospective families need consider medical expenses, have adequate time to care for Moon, and be willing to guide him through physical therapy. “My goal is find him a forever home that’s ready to take on whatever comes with him. He’s fought his way to this point and he deserves a chance,” added Kat. For now Moon seems content to accompany his siblings Virginia and Bailey on daily walks, slippers and all. Serious applicants can apply online at www.marrvelouspetrescues.org or stop by and inquire at Marvelous Pet Rescue at 99900 Overseas Highway in Key Largo, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Bottom: Part of Moon’s therapy involves daily swimming in a life vest while wearing his ‘Rambo slippers.’ Left: Diana Bassett is fostering Moon until he finds his forever home.

‘CHEMRADERY’

SARA MATTHIS

his band’s true beginning came about when vocalist Gregory Scot Dyer and guitarist Ivan Alexander started playing Dyer’s original music. It was pure chemistry — or Chemradery, as the band is called — that locals can see Friday, June 10 at Gilbert’s. “We started to have some success with the original music, playing as a duo,” Dyer said. “Then we began to piece in other musicians that we knew. And that’s the group that we have today.” All of Chemradery’s members are seasoned musicians in their own right, and they hail from the U.S. and Central America. Gregory, originally from Philly, spent several years singing professional opera with the Palm Beach Opera

Company. Ivan, from Nicaragua, performed with multiple touring acts, and worked as a session guitarist. Joe Louis (keyboard) and Larry Dinan (percussion) both hail from South Florida. Mark Jacobs, off the road from playing on a national tour with several bands, joined in as the band’s bass player. He’s from Boston. Chemradery plays a genre-bending mix: part Top 40 rock, part blue-eyed soul. Big thing are happening for the band. They’ve played with The Voice’s Jacquie Lee, played the Honda Classic Awards Ceremony with world-renown saxophonist, Kenny G, and 97.9 WRMF's No Snowball Concert with Adam Lambert and Third Eye Blind, to name a few. And Dyer hints the band’s songs will soon be heard on the radio. For now, download the self-titled EP at chemradery. com untill the full length album is finished.

H

og Heaven Sports Bar & Grill has plenty of delicious signature drinks, but their best has to be the Hair of the Hog Bloody Mary. This spicy little number comes complete with smoked bacon, celery, pickle spear, shrimp, meat straw (you read that correctly), and Old Bay seasoning. As far as Jenny Farr is concerned, it’s the Ubon’s Hot and Spicy Mary mix that completes the Hair of the Hog. She should know; she’s been bartending for more than 13 years, the last five of which she’s spent in the Keys. “After a full knee replacement, the warm temperatures down here really help,” the Montana native said. And how; she’s recovered nicely and spends her island time waterskiing and spearfishing. When she’s not shooting monster grouper, or tending to her fur babies, Magnum and Roxy, Jenny likes to hit the links and work on her golf game on the mainland. “I’m pretty mean with a pitching wedge, not to brag or anything,” she laughed. Visit Jenny at Hog Heaven, located at 85361 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. Food is served from 11 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., and the bar stays open until 4 a.m.

KEYS ART

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / JUNE 10, 2016

Mother of the Ocean BJ Royster’s work considered the gold standard GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

E

ven as a child, BJ Royster remembers feeling the call to create. “I silently knew I wanted to paint, but I didn’t tell anyone,” said BJ as she brushed the finishing touches to an angelfish. “If you would have told me I would exclusively paint ocean scenery, I wouldn’t have believed you. I almost drowned when I was young, so my phobia of the ocean kept me on dry land for a long time.” She finally faced her fear in 1995 at the age of 40. BJ recalls the moment she jumped in and said she instantly understood her precise passion — to paint underwater scenes. “From that day I was determined on growing my stock of artwork so I could transition careers,” said BJ, a former retail manager. “I finally went ‘professional’ in 1998, after which I focused on my passion – the reef and ocean life.” BJ’s works have incredible realism and detail that draws the viewer. “We have one of her prints on display in the workplace. All of my coworkers have commented on how incredibly realistic her work is,” said Jo-Anne Gardner of Printing Plus in Key Largo. “They insisted I get one to hang on the wall.” Royster’s method of painting ocean scenery varies based on the work’s subject. “When painting reefs I lay the water down first, then the reef, and finally I’ll add the ocean life that would be around,” she said. “I paint the way nature grows. For most underwater scenes I put the bottom first, followed by ocean life that is floating, then the water.” Unlike other artists using acrylic, BJ tends to work from light (the sandy bottom) to dark (the water column). And she repurposes used and worn brushes for specific effects. Being unconventional has worked to Royster’s advantage, considering she’s self-taught and has never taken a single lesson. “Someone once told me that it was impossible to make something two dimensional appear three dimensional. I’ve used that as motivation throughout the years,” she admitted. “When I paint something, I really try to use shadows and lighting to make it look 3-D.” More than 10 years of diving have given BJ plenty of facetime with her subjects. Recently, she assisted the Coral Restoration Foundation in a day of harvesting and planting live coral at Davis reef. “A goal of my art is to inspire an appreciation for our reefs and their preservation, so it was incredible to see that 97 percent of the divers were participating in their first harvesting dive,” she said. What was even more incredible, BJ said, was having Patti Gross, a recent inductee into the Women’s Diving Hall of Fame, as a dive buddy. “It was truly an honor.” BJ Royster’s gallery is located at 81650 Overseas Highway in Islamorada and also features the art of Suzie Trottmow and Lisa Lee. She also has artwork on display at the Red Bone Gallery in Islamorada and the Artist in Paradise gallery on Big Pine Key. The BJ Royster gallery offers painting lessons by appointment. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GABRIEL SANCHEZ/Keys Weekly

After photographing ocean life on her dive trips, BJ returns to the studio with the print and recreates the scenery.

A blazing good time The festivities come to a fiery finish on Saturday, June 18 inside a hollow metal mako shark sculpture, created by Islamorada artist ‘Pasta’ Pantaleo.

T

he inaugural Blazing Mako Bonfire Tournament and Festival is to light up Islamorada Friday through Sunday, June 17-19, at the Islander Resort, A Guy Harvey Outpost, located at MM 82.1 oceanside. Blending angling, art and conservation, the Father’s Day weekend event is part of the Guy Harvey Bonfire Tournament series. The weekend kicks off Friday, June 17, with the “Papa’s Pilar Fishing Seminar,” where attendees can hear fish tales and get tips and techniques from fishing all-stars. Registration for the inshore and offshore Blazing Mako fishing tournament follows, with a 7 p.m. captains meeting and party. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 18, and continues until 3 p.m. The day’s attractions include dockside parties, barbecue and a 6 p.m. awards ceremony for both inshore and offshore categories. Non-anglers can enjoy an Artist and “Conch-servation” Village, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The village spotlights research and education work currently underway to preserve ocean resources by groups that include the Everglades Foundation, Reef Environmental Education Foundation, Coral Restoration Foundation, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Turtle Hospital and Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center. Festival-goers can browse fine art, sculpture, wood and metal pieces, jewels and treasures, landscape and undersea photography and re-purposed creations by 100 “Conch-servation” Village artists. Saturday’s culmination is to be a beach bonfire celebration, featuring the night-time torching of a natural flammables “blaze” inside a giant hollow metal mako shark sculpture, created by Islamorada artist Roberto “Pasta” Pantaleo. The “trash to treasure” sculpture is made of iron, reclaimed steel plates and cast-off alloys. Other highlights include a pier fishing tournament for kids, Rum Village offering signature cocktails, rums and craft brews; paddleboard poker run and Bull and Oyster Roast on Sunday. The weekend also is to include a silent auction and live music performances

Faculty and students at Coral Shores High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I am on the tennis and cross country teams, and I am in student council. Being involved in these things are important to me because I enjoy all the friendships I have made by taking part in these activities. Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? Both Mrs. Wischmeier and Mr. Ellsworth. Although they teach very different subjects, both have encouraged me to press harder and beyond what I thought I could ever do in Math and English. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Human geography is the best, because the class teaches us about people in the world and issues we are facing today. Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter? No. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I think the biggest challenge facing the Keys is all of the debris floating in the water. It can have a negative impact on both the animals and the environment. To meet these challenges, I would try to pick up any trash I see on the water when I’m out on the boat. What are your plans after high school? After high school I want to go to the University of Florida, and then attend medical school to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Viva la France, as all eyes and hearts will be turned toward the grassy fields of Paris to Nice this June to watch the most gut-wrenching, soul-inspiring, patriotic, championship of all times. These inspiring athletes — be it from England or Germany or Spain — will show us the beauty of soccer that crosses all cultures. The games will leave audiences either breathless, crying, or screaming at the top of their lungs (okay, some dullness at times). These footballers are like racehorses — fit, skilled, talented, blessed and betting on the right one can be tricky. First up will be Group Stages: Teams will play within their group, earning points for wins or ties--with the top two advancing into the semi’s (the four best number third place teams advance as well). SEA GRASS DIEOFF SPARKS GRASS ROOTS MOVEMENT

L

Florida Bay Forever begins organized advocacy campaign

U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo, left, Capt. Elizabeth Jolin, Capt. Xavier Figueredo and Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster discuss solutions for the backcountry’s health.

By Jason Koler

arge swaths of skinny waters between Islamorada and the Everglades are no longer the stuff of TDC photo essays. The chocolately brown water is closer to the hue of Lake Erie and the faint sulfuric scent is clear evidence of the massive seagrass die off in the Florida Bay that has resulted in localized fish kills, extensive loss of marine life habitat and led to ideal conditions for a massive algae bloom. “The trigger has already been pulled and it will happen,” says Capt. Xavier Figueredo. “We are probably looking at the worst algae blooms that this bay has ever seen because the grass die off this time around is about 40 percent larger than last time.” Figueredo is a founding member of the new 501c4 Florida Bay Forever formed to “call on policymakers to take immediate action toward Everglades restoration.” He joins Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster, Daniel Burkhart, Capt. Steve Friedman, Mark Gregg, Mindy Conn, Figueredo, Capt. Gary Nichols and Capt. Elizabeth Jolin — the group’s executive director and Figuerdo’s wife. The seagrass die off has already affected at least 40,000 acres and as it continues to spread across the Bay, the group is concerned about spider web of adverse affects across the fragile Florida Keys eco-system. “It intersects other bodies of water,” Jolin warns. “The reality is that this is critical to the coral reef. We talk about it as if it is a closed system, but it’s not.” In a report released by the South Florida Natural Resources Center (SFNRC), last summer’s drought “resulted in an acute, catastrophic loss of seagrass.” The findings also allude to the biological and economic impacts of the die-off, reporting “Florida Bay provides the nursery area for a multibillion dollar fishery and tourism-centered economy. When Florida Bay is unhealthy, the impacts are felt across South Florida.” U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo and State Representative Holly Raschein recently toured the affected area with Florida Bay Forever agents. Rashcein told the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce that more help is needed at the federal level. JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly

18

“Florida Bay is a critically important ecosystem in addition to being a vital component of our local economy. That is why it is crucial that we continue to pursue strategies to send more clean water to Florida Bay,” Raschein said. “We should consider all available options to not only increase water quality but to complete projects like the Tamiami Trail that will help send more water south." Curbelo has said that the state needs to purchase acreage south of Lake Okeechobee to build reservoirs of fresh water. Call Captain Elizabeth Jolin at 305393-0994 or email fbfvr@gmail.com for more information. Watch for website www.floridabayforever.org and membership opportunity in the coming months. PLANTED Second annual ‘Coralpalooza’ honors World Oceans Day

1

2 3

O

n June 4, Coral Restoration Foundation hosted its second annual “Coralpalooza.” The event was held to celebrate World Oceans Day and raise awareness for our coral reefs. Seventeen boats filled with more than 200 divers, from volunteers to partners to Coral Restoration Foundation team members participated in the event, which spanned South Florida and the Caribbean. During Saturday’s events, teams outplanted 1,865 corals of staghorn and elkhorn onto 11 different reef restoration sites. Divers also conducted routine maintenance in offshore coral tree nurseries and collected valuable citizen scientist data on the growth and mortality of previously outplanted corals on multiple reefs, including Carysfort Reef and White Bank Reef. World Oceans Day is internationally celebrated every year on June 8 and Coral Restoration Foundation’s Coralpalooza has helped bring greater recognition to this date and present ocean conservation as a critical issue for our earth. The theme for this year’s World Oceans Day is “healthy ocean, healthy planet,” a theme that can be carried forward and an ideal that Coral Restoration Foundation promotes daily. Coral Restoration Foundation hopes events like Coralpalooza will bring awareness to the importance of restoration, preservation, and conservation for our reefs and the world’s oceans. This event is made possible with the support of volunteers and partners including Mote Marine Laboratory, University of Miami Rescue A Reef, Nova Southeastern University Coral Nursery Initiative, Coral Restoration Foundation Bonaire, and Coral Restoration Foundation Curacao. To donate or learn more about Coral Restoration Foundation, visit www.coralrestoration.org or call 305-453-7030.
