MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017 SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

In honor of the Coral Head Music Fest this weekend, the Weekly is taking a stroll down memory lane. We asked the educators and staff at Marathon High School to recall their favorite ’80s bands. The answers from these proper professionals offer a glimpse of their teenage fandoms.

What’s your favorite ’80s band?

Christine Paul has a sheepish smile. “Motley Crue. Oh, and Guns ‘n’ Roses. But I also went through an awkward country phase. The hotel we were staying at for the concert was also hosting a clown convention,” she said, laughing.

“Rush!” Dawn Dreizler was a New York City teenager and caught the act at a small movie theater. “I was in the balcony and Geddy Lee acknowledged me from the stage because I was dancing.”

Jackie Gonzalez loves Journey and Fleetwood Mac. “I never went to a concert when I was in high school. But I saw Journey three years ago at the Hard Rock with my husband and kid,” she said. Don’t stop believing!

Remember those awesome love ballads? Liz Logan listened to Air Supply in the ’80s when she lived in Oklahoma, France and Wisconsin. “‘I’m All Out of Love,’ that’s the song!” she said.

Teresa Konrath immediately breaks into AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” But she also confesses a love for 2 Live Crew, early hip hop. (It’s possible she sneaked out of the Keys to catch a concert on the mainland.)

S

ince 2010, almost every single council person elected to two terms had a chance to serve as mayor, with the exception of former Councilman Richard Keating, under this unstructured arrangement. In 2016, when Councilman Dan Zieg, Steve Cook and John Bartus were elected, it was Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron who immediately nominated Zieg as mayor, seconded by Cook. The fast nomination — effectively guaranteeing at least a 3-2 vote for Zieg — shut out any others who would have tossed their hat in the ring. This raised some eyebrows because, of the three elected to serve, Zieg received the fewest votes in the general election. Because of the state’s Sunshine Law, the council persons are not allowed to talk about the vote with each other in private, in advance of the vote for mayor. “This system leads to back-door lobbying. People send out surrogates. They offer illegal favors. It’s ridiculous,” said Councilman Mark Senmartin. “You can’t say ‘please vote for me,’ because that is against the law. You’re supposed to discuss who wants to be mayor at a public meeting, on the dais. But that’s not how it works in the real world,” said Cook. Cook and Senmartin have proposed different solutions. Senmartin’s is rather straightforward: put it on the ballot as a separate question, as a non-binding referendum. Only council members with at least two years of experience would be eligible. He said he prefers this method because it allows for public input, while still allowing council to make the final decision. At the meeting on Tuesday, when his solution seemed to be received without favor, he offered a compromise.

Fact No. 1: The City of Marathon operates on a “weak mayor, strong administration” government model. That means the title of mayor is mostly ceremonial.

HOW TO ELECT A MAYOR … or satisfy a five-headed dragon

“At the very least, choose a mayor by lottery. That way, there’s no horsetrading back and forth,” Senmartin said. Cook’s proposal is a little more convoluted. “It goes by seniority. The vice mayor becomes the mayor and the mayor would then assume ‘fifth place’ in standings to become mayor again. Then the other council members would enter the rotation, depending on when they were elected. If there’s a ‘tie’ — two council persons elected the same year — then it would go by electoral popularity. For example, Bartus received more votes than I did, so he would be mayor in 2018, then it would be my turn the year after.” Zieg, Coldiron, Cook and Bartus voted to have staff draft a resolution outlining Cook’s proposal. Senmartin was the only dissenter. Bartus voiced his misgivings. “I’ll vote yes at this stage, but I don’t know. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Bartus said. City attorney David Migut told the council its aim can be accomplished via resolution, with no need to change the city charter.

In other news: • City Manager Chuck Lindsey updated the council about researching the feasibility of a community pool. Rather than form a committee that might be constrained by the Sunshine Law, he intends to solicit members of the community with “no bias” to go on “fact finding missions.” Lindsey said he would provide the council with regular updates and will have made significant progress by June. • The Marathon City Council signed a resolution to send to Monroe County regarding Tourist Development Council funding. Currently, Monroe County “brick and mortar” projects are funded 100 percent, while Keys municipalities are only refunded 50 percent of the project cost. The Marathon Council is asking the county to increase that refund to 75 percent, and also extend the same deal to nonprofits. The resolution also requests the county to rescind the cumbersome stipulation that nonprofits cannot receive TDC funds until the project is complete.

Fact No. 2: None of the current council members is 100 percent satisfied with the way the mayor is selected. As it stands now, after an election and the new council members are sworn in, the next order of business is a quick vote to choose the mayor.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017

Satellites landing SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

T

he Keys Weekly had the opportunity to interview two of the four members of the Georgia Satellites in advance of their arrival this weekend in Marathon. Unfortunately, very little of it was suitable for print in a family newspaper, despite the raucously funny tone of the interview. Let’s put it this way — the band thinks the tour/music is incredibly important but not at all serious. “I just go where they tell me. I show up at the airport and they tell me where I’m going,” laughed lead guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Richards. He’s an original member of the band that got its start in the ’80s. It wasn’t until 1986, though, that the band released its biggest hit — “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” — written by Dan Baird. (Only Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” kept it from the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100). “Listen, we were an Atlanta bar band. We bastardized some country songs and put some rock in there. And we were also heavily influenced by the British Invasion. We didn’t cater to the trends or the demographics. And then all of a sudden we just had this song that people liked,” Richards said. “We had that hit song and we were just happy to be there.” The band opened for the likes of Tom Petty, David Bowie, Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger and REO Speedwagon. “The caliber of the women and the caliber of the hotel were definitely upgraded,” he said. The other hits on the self-titled album that propelled them to fame in 1986 were “Battleship Chains” (Terry Anderson) and “Every Picture Tells a Story” (Rod Stewart). In 1988 they recorded a version of “Hippy Hippy Shake” featured in the movie “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise. Soon after, Baird left the band for a solo career and the musicians went into a bit of a hiatus before reforming in 1993. The current lineup features Richards, and newcomers Fred McNeal (vocals, rhythm guitar), Bruce Smith (bass) and Todd Johnston (drums). In all, the Georgia Satellites has four studio albums; the latest — “Shaken Not Stirred” — was released in 1997.

Don’t hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself

When he isn’t playing with the Georgia Satellites, Richards told the Weekly, he’s a gynecologist. “He’s telling the truth,” said drummer Todd Johnston. “No, he’s not.” In reality, Richards collaborates quite a bit with Guns n' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin in his band, Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds. They toured in the 1990s and have recorded seven albums. “We just finished something a couple of months ago. It’s on iTunes or YouTube or some sh@! like that,” he said. (We’re guessing here — but in 2016, they performed together on the “Walk’N Song;” possibly that’s what he’s referring to.) Richards promises the band will play a rockin’ set list. Yes, they will play all the favorites. Yes, they’ll play a couple of oddballs. (“I really like the Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus.’”)

SCHEDULE-ISH 11:30 a.m. — gates open 11:45 a.m. — Opening Ceremonies (American Legion Color Guard with special guest Bill Hoebee from the “Hoebee in the Afternoon Experiment”) Noon-12:45 p.m. — Shastina 1:15-2:15 p.m. — Fiddle Rock 3:15-4:30 p.m. — Georgia Satellites 5:15-6:15 p.m. — Above The Skyline 6:45-8:15 p.m. — Lazy Bonez 9-10:30 p.m. — Molly Hatchet

Did you know? Drummer Todd Johnston’s day gig is as an investor with a Silicon Valley startup that is investigating genetic testing for food supply. He also speaks Spanish and has two children (one planned, one not). “Playing music means I get to enjoy my life and not become a fuddy duddy.”

Bring a chair As with other events at Marathon Community Park’s amphitheater, the public is encouraged to bring some lawn chairs or a blanket. No coolers. Beer will be for sale at the event, and all proceeds benefit the projects of the local chapter of American Legion including scholarships, donations to charity, and Project Vet Relief.

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017 The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial team, varsity volleyball team, the girls’ weightlifting team, and the tennis team. I believe balancing sports and intellectual activities is important for building morals in a well-rounded person. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Teacher Jessie Schubert has made the biggest impact on me as a young writer and as an athlete. He pushes me to finish strong.

JUNIOR

MILLY CRUZ

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The English Honors class I took as a freshman taught me how to analyze what I read at a higher level. I believe this will be an essential tool for college. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Definitely Snap! I love the yellow butterfly filter.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Growing up in such a small town leaves you vulnerable to harsh criticism. I overcome this by trying to make the right decisions so I can be a role model to my younger siblings and family members. What are your plans after high school? I plan on attending University of Florida and then going to law school out of state. I hope to own a law firm one day. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I do not see myself here forever. It’s beautiful to come on vacation, but I envision myself in a big city. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… the value and importance of surrounding yourself with those who encourage and support your growth and success.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017

Week 2 The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 6-13 are listed below.

Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

I decided to join the Marathon Meltdown contest because I wanted to be held accountable as I work toward reaching my health goals while supporting my fellow community members in reaching their own.”

tip At the weigh-in on Monday, Liz Kuck spoke about mindfulness. The Keys Strength and Conditioning co-owner talked about recognizing triggers that lead to unhealthy behaviors — such as a stressful phone call that results in digging into a colleague’s candy bowl. Mindfulness is about focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. To learn about beating the trigger-behavior-reward mechanism, visit www.ted.com and search for the talk by Judson Brewer.

MIA’S BIG HEART AND BIG BIRTHDAY

Heart Month is personal to this family KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

“W

hen you are sitting in the hospital with a sick child, it’s a level playing field,” said Wendy Wilson from the E Dock at Faro Blanco Marina on the family’s 32-foot Bayliner. “It doesn’t matter what your social level is, or what kind of car you drive. It’s kind of like boating. We are all rooting for each other, all here to help each other out.” Wendy, Bobby and their four dynamic daughters, Nina, AnnaMay, Ella, and Mia are on the “loop” – an almost yearlong trip from Ohio down the Mississippi, around Key West and back up the East Coast. And they are doing it with youngest daughter Mia, a happy, bright ball of sunshine who is battling a congenital heart defect. Mia takes about 40 medicines a day. The chatty preschooler loves to draw and paint, talk on the phone and take selfies. She wants to know your name, who you’re married to, what everyone’s job is, and if she can wear your sun-

glasses and watch. She can’t swallow food, so she’s hooked up to a feeding machine almost 24-7. But, that doesn’t keep her from swimming in the pool with her sisters, or riding on the fly bridge with her dad out to Sombrero Reef. Mia was born flat-lined on Feb. 19, six years ago. Doctors prepared Wendy and Bobby to expect five hours, then five days, and now she’s about to celebrate her sixth birthday. Her sister, Nina, was in middle school at the time and remembers the kids at school worrying about what kind of shoes they were wearing. “It all just seemed so minuscule when a little baby is fighting for her life,” she said. The next five years were spent in basic quarantine for little Mia, with three open heart surgeries, and issues

with her eyes, ears, stomach, and even a broken leg. Bobby and Wendy always said they wanted to do the loop when they retired, after watching friends complete the journey in the pre-social media days via emails and dial-up AOL. Those same friends sold them their boat, and with zero big-boat experience, they packed up the family, and all of Mia’s medicine, and got underway. One hundred eighty-three days later, they found themselves in Marathon. “We have to stay in marinas and close by medical care, just in case,” said Wendy, pointing out the converted shower where they store all of Mia’s medicine. “We also need a real shower.” In Marathon, they have already been on a tour of the Coast Guard

Station, the Turtle Hospital and the girls’ favorite, Aquarium Encounters. Mia’s favorite was the stingrays; she likened them to dogs. AnnaMay’s was the sea slug in the touch tank, and Ella loved the angelfish. The girls are looking forward to seeing the Butterfly Conservatory in Key West, if Bobby can find a spot at The Galleon to dock. While in port, family in Ohio send Mia’s medical supplies down via FedEx and there is constant communication with her doctors via a wifi hotspot, the same hotspot Bobby uses to work as an electronic processor. And, there are harbor hosts – complete strangers – who accept packages for them, or give them rides to the grocery store. “The deliveries aren’t little either. It’s usually like eight huge boxes that fill the entire cabin,” said Wendy. “We are waiting on Mia’s heart meds today. It’s a little nerve-wracking.” But, while one daughter paints her toenails on the dock, and two are paddleboarding and kayaking in the harbor, and little Mia catches rides on the golf cart with her new friend Celina, Bobby and Wendy said they wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s great to be together as a family,” they said. “We had to do this now; we don’t know when we’d get another chance.” To follow the family, Mia is on a Facebook group at “Mias Big Heart,” and the family’s loop adventures can be found at “Wilsons on the Water.” They plan on being finished with the loop by mid-June, when Mia has to be back home for more tests and surgeries. Since February is Heart Month, the family wants to raise awareness for future research. “If we can do something now that will help someone 20 years from now in our same shoes, then we have to,” said Wendy. “If someone five years before Mia hadn’t tried something new, we may not have her here with us today.”

MIA’S BIG BIRTHDAY PARTY The Faro Blanco crew has come to love Mia and her family. They are throwing Mia a birthday party, and the family a bon voyage party on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Captain’s Room at Lighthouse Grill, and then probably moving poolside, since Mia loves the pool. *Remember Mia has a very susceptible immune system, so please don’t bring unnecessary germs.

wo years ago, Ray sailed in to Marathon from Texas with his wife, and fell in love with everything Marathon offered. “We were going to keep going but decided to stick around for a little,” he said. His drink of choice: a lemon drop martini, made with Grey Goose vodka. “I shake it until there are little ice shards in it,” he said, after mulling fresh lemon with sugar to add to the drink. Ray said the martini goes great with the fresh catch, hogfish. “Fried, blackened or grilled, you can’t go wrong with it,” he said. His favorite part about working at Harbor View Cafe and Bar is the people. “I have a lot in common with the customers,” he said. “I like playing golf.” He gets out on the greens about once a week, and bartends about four days a week. “It leaves me a day for fishing, a day to play golf, and a day to do whatever my wife wants.” Harbor View Cafe and Bar is located inside Florida Keys Country Club on Sombrero Road. Words of wisdom for the aging Getting older isn’t for sissies

M

y good friend Mac from the U.K. commiserates with me often about getting older and its effects on this vehicle we use to get around on this plane — our bodies. As time goes by, our bodies betray us a little more each day. Mac began one of his recent emails to me with this quote: “As I was lying around, pondering the problems of the world, I realized that at my age I don’t really give a rat’s ass anymore.” What follows are some spot-on observations with which I’m JOHN sure many of us can relate. If you’re too young, cut BARTUS out and save this column for a decade or three. It will make a lot more sense! is a City Council - If walking is good for your health, the postman member and a former Mayor of would be immortal. the City of Mara- A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks thon. And you tell me to exercise?? I don’t think so. - Just grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to remember the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. Now that I’m older here’s what I’ve discovered: 1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it. 2. My wild oats are mostly enjoyed with prunes and all-bran. 3. I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart. 4. Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded. 5. Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded. 6. If all is not lost, then where the heck is it? 7. It was a whole lot easier to get older than it is to get wiser. 8. Some days, you’re the top dog; some days, you’re the tree. 9. I wish the buck really did stop here; I sure could use a few of them. 10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents. 11. Accidents in the back seat cause kids. 12. It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere. 13. The world only beats a path to your door when you’re in the bathroom. 14. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he’d have put them on my knees. 15. When I’m finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess. 16. It’s not hard to meet expenses; they’re everywhere. 17. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. 18. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter; I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I’m here after. 19. Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded. ••••• Thank you to everyone who came out and was a part of my 33rd Anniversary Concert at Sunset Park in Key Colony Beach last week. It was an amazing turnout, and performing for that many music fans in a beautiful tropical setting is something I’ll remember for a long time. Don’t forget that each Sunday in season, the Key Colony Beach Community Association hosts a different act Sunday afternoons at Sunset Park — find out more at www.kcbca.org.
