FEATURES

FROM THE PRESIDENT

This fall Maryland had its longest recorded period without rain, part of unusual weather patterns in so many parts of the country. Here at Curley the long-lasting mild weather was a real gift for outdoor fall sports, and while the playing fields and plants needed water, there was no drought of activities, as you will read throughout this issue.

The meetings to decide the contents of each issue are always interesting. One goal is to share the school’s activities, without making an issue look like the one from the previous year. Coming up with the feature articles and alumni spotlights are what is really challenging. What would the readers enjoy? And what is something the magazine hasn’t covered in its many years of publication? Has there been an article on that person in the past, or on that particular subject?

One article in this issue is on the Alumni Association, now in its 45th year. It was enjoyable to look back, but also impressive to see how the Association, and the presence and support of the alumni, has become such an integral part of Curley. Alumni are so critical to the future of any school, not only keeping alive a tradition they helped to form, but by generously contributing to operations and special projects. This anniversary also led to the school adding the list of Alumni Association presidents and their years of service to the website.

In one meeting it was noted that there have been more recent graduates going to military academies and institutions than in earlier years, and got the Advancement staff wondering why that is the case. You’ll be able to learn a little more on that in the graduates’ own words.

The “Restore, Refresh, Renew Facilities Campaign” launched, and many of the earlier classes have been contacted, with a generous response for which all are most grateful. The early months of 2025 will be the timeframe for mailings to other classes (and constituencies). These projects can’t wait for years, and really necessitate this effort.

With the great Campus Store at the school, we hear more and more stories of how people meet other graduates, both close to home or in other states, when they are wearing a shirt, hat or jacket with Curley’s logo or name. What a great way to meet people!

What will happen throughout 2025? While no one can be certain of every detail, a class will graduate, and the Class of 2029 will enroll, the faith will be lived, learning will take place, and co-curricular activities will abound. With God’s help, it will be a great semester with many successes, both personal and school-wide. Please stay in touch with Curley, proudly wear your Curley gear, and visit when you can.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION-45 YEARS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION-45 YEARS

Following ordination in May, 1980, I was assigned to Curley as a teacher That summer, even before arriving back at the school, Fr Linus DeSantis, then principal, said to me, “We need an alumni association You’re an alumnus, so I would like you to start one ”

There were some challenges at first, as there was no comprehensive database of graduates with their addresses There had been reunions, and so there was an assortment of lists which were compiled for the first master list. The first bulletins that were sent out were composed, typed and printed in the school’s print shop (no longer in the basement), with the National Honor Society members addressing envelopes, and then helping to sort into zip code order for bulk mailing. Eventually the addresses were added to discs, multiple discs at that time, so after the labels were printed and applied, the sorting still took place.

Those earliest publications simply began talking about the new Alumni Association, and the school hosted a few socials after events to which graduates were invited. One of the first to respond was Frank Rosenberger ’65, and he eventually became the first Association president. Others from the early years also began to respond, and there was enthusiasm to draw up by-laws, and to officially incorporate the Association, which took place in 1982. At that time the school had no development or advancement office, and so the Association became an independent, though affiliated, entity More recently, the alumni membership voted to suspend the corporation, and the Alumni Association now operates under Advancement This is the standard model for most schools with such an association

The earliest years saw a monthly meeting, followed by refreshments, and the hosting of various events, including at times New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl parties, as fund-raisers to cover the Association’s expenses An early addition to the calendar was an annual Memorial Mass, remembering deceased students, alumni, faculty and staff, followed by a breakfast, which still continues under the auspices of the Alumni Association

As fund-raising events were successful, the Association also became donors to Curley causes, from capital campaigns to special projects, such as support for the Gala, new chairs for the school’s Conference Room, or providing the cook-out lunch for school retreats. Along with all the individual graduates who support the Annual Fund and special campaigns, the alumni are making a difference in maintaining and improving the Curley facility.

Four events, in particular, have become the hallmarks of the Association’s year. The first is Homecoming, where the Alumni tent is the place to gather and to have something to eat and drink while supporting the athletes. This year, a group also introduced “Friar Dough” to the day, a traditional fried dough, though uniquely named, and it received a good response. The dough itself was sourced from Charles Hergenroeder ’82, whose family still operates the Woodlea Bakery Friar Dough has already been a part of one parish carnival, with a financial split of the profits, while promoting Curley along the way

The second is Reunion Night, an opportunity to gather the classes who will celebrate their 5th, 10th, etc reunions that year A special event for the “Golden Friars” began in 2015 as the Class of 1965 became the first to have a 50th This is held in May of each year, with a Mass and social at the school, and a celebratory dinner at a venue

The third annual event, and largest fund raiser for the Association, is the annual Shrimp Feast, now held each February. It remains a great event for alumni to gather, enjoy some good food, catch up with friends, and support the wheels and silent auction.

Coming up on its 36th year, the Targarona Memorial Golf Tournament contributes the proceeds of the outing to the endowed Alumni Scholarship, which on June 30, 2024 had a value of over $460,000. The scholarships go to sons and grandsons of alumni who attend Curley. Frank Savarese ’75 is the long-time chair of this event.

There have also been occasional ‘out-of-town’ events to gather alums, with the March 2024 event near Rehobeth Beach drawing one of the largest crowds to date. A newer event began during the pandemic, with the formation of a Friars’ Whiskey Guild, and a tasting that linked everyone by Zoom (numbered samples were part of the ticket price, and picked up prior to the Zoom) While the first was really an effort to keep alumni connected, the popularity of such tastings today has led to semiannual tastings hosted by the Guild, now in person in various locations

Students have learned to see alumni around the school, for example as presenters for Career Day each year, and all trust this will encourage continued involvement once a young man graduates Board members have also coordinated several service days, for example taking on a project at one of the parish schools that sends students to Curley, and building good will in the process.

While there is an Alumni Director hired by the school who assists the Association, the Association has its own board and officers. The bylaws allow up to 25 members, and the Board describes itself as very much a working group, both organizing and providing the staffing for the various events. The Association president is also an ex officio voting member of the Curley School Board, recognizing the important role of alumni in the larger school community

The Alumni and Advancement Offices work in tandem to keep graduates informed through the semi-annual CURLEY magazine and the Annual Report A monthly bulletin goes out digitally to the graduates, and specific classes are informed, as possible, of special events or the death of a classmate Email and other digital distributions make so much possible that was not even a thought at the beginning.

Moving from Fr. Linus’ goal of an Alumni Association, and seeing where it is and what it accomplishes 45 years later, brings a sense of satisfaction. Of course, the various alumni directors, board members, and the staff of the Advancement Office have played key roles. But, above all, if the graduates didn’t continue to show up, and to support the many events and campaigns of the school, Curley would not be what it is today. The expression “where Brotherhood begins” is of more recent vintage, but even the first classes will attest to the bonds they formed A private school’s well-being has a dependence on alumni support, and so we trust Curley is poised for success

Alumni: Please keep your address current, and add your email and cell number to the distribution database, by contacting the Alumni Office. In this way you won’t miss the latest news and class events.
