This year you will be a member of a group of over 200 residential students, and we look forwardwithpleasuretolivingandworkingwithyouinourboardinghouses

We hope that you will find Aquinas boarding a place where you will want to be, because herewetrytocreateanenvironmentwhereyoucanfindacceptance,tolerance,forgiveness, andthechallengetogrowinthemanyaspectsofyourlife.

Thereismuchreflectiononbeginnings.ItwasonJune1st,1896,thatthefirstthreeboarders (GeorgeDaniels,JohnO’Callaghan,andRudolphSchimovich)wereenrolledatSt George’s Terrace Theseboyswererespectivelynumbers127,128and129intheCollegeRegister Two weeks later, the new boarding wing was opened, and on June 15th, 1896, were enrolled Daniel and Leonard Wilkie, Cyril and Leonard Snell, and John Murphy By the end of the year,tenboardershadbeenenrolled.

ThereisaveryrichtraditionofboardingatAquinas OvermanyyearsbothatSt George’s TerraceandlateratMtHenry,wehavediscoveredtheprinciplesofoperationbestsuitedto ourparticularboardingcommunity

EncounterwithGod

Nocommunitycanfunction withoutbasicruleswhich guaranteetherightsandprivileges ofeachmember Carefulreading oftheprinciplesstatedinthis documentwillensurethatyou understandwhatisexpectedof youandassistyoutocontribute totheformationofaharmonious boardingcommunity.

Purpose

ResidentialStudentsareacceptedatAquinasCollegeforthepurposeofprovidingthem withaneducationalopportunity,intheEdmundRiceTradition Thestudent’sprimary reasonforbeinginboardingistogainthebestpossibleeducation

Religion

AquinasCollegeisaCatholicschool,whereReligiousFormationisaccordedpriorityinthe curriculum,andwhereprayerandthecelebrationoftheEucharistareafocalpoint Allin theboardingcommunityhaveanopportunitytoparticipatefullyinthesecelebrations

Eachstudent,whenacceptingenrolmentatAquinas,isexpectedtoparticipateinthe regularcelebrationoftheEucharistandotherdevotionalpractices

ConditionsforBoardingatAquinas

Studentsjoiningtheboardingcommunityshouldunderstandthatthenatureoflarge grouplivinginevitablyrestrictscertainaspectsoftheirindividualfreedom.Thereisaneed forallstudentstodevelopasenseofbalancebetweentheneedsoftheindividualandthe needsofthecommunity.

Membershipofanycommunityrequirescontribution.FortheAquinasboarding communitytoenjoyharmonyandhappiness,eachmemberofthecommunitymust contributeandbeconsiderateofothers

Respect

Harassment

ResidentialStaff

TheHeadofBoardingandtheBoardingStaffareprimarilyconcernedwiththepastoralcare oftheboysinresidence ItistheroleofeachDirectorofResidencetooverseethecare, supervision,anddevelopmentofyourson.Allstaffstrivetocreateapositiveenvironmentso thatboarderscangainthemaximumfromtheirstayintheresidentialcommunityand provideamodelforboardersthatisbasedontheCollege’sethos

Donothesitatetocontactyourson’sDirectorofResidenceduringtheyearifyouhaveany concernsorquestionsaboutboardinglifeorinformationthatyouthinkmaybehelpful.

Preparingforlivingawayfromhome

Formanynewboarders,goingtoboardingschoolisthefirsttimetheyhavespenta significantamountoftimeawayfromtheirhome,theirfamilyandtheirfriends

Belowareanumberofissuesthatyoumightliketodiscusswithyoursonsothatheis preparedinsomewayforthechange Therearealsoanumberoflife-skillsthatanewboarder mustbeproficientiniftheyaretomakeaspeedyandpleasanttransitiontoboarding

Somesuggestedpersonalskillsneededare:

Theabilitytomakeabed,includingputtingonafittedsheet,inaneatandtidy manner;

Theorganisationofone’sbelongings; Strategiestoorganisestudytimeandachievesetstudygoals; Appropriatesocialisingskillswithpeers;

Thestructuringofleisuretimeinsuchawayastoavoidbecomingboredorhaving littletodo;and

Thebudgetingoffunds

Thelackofthesepersonalskillscanleadtodifficultyforboystryingtosettleintoboarding.

Personalhygiene

Itisessentialthatallboysknowtheimportanceofshoweringwithsoapandshampoo,using deodorant,andchangingunderwearandsocksdaily Withoutthisknowledgeitispossible thata boymaybeostracisedbyhispeers,creatingaverydifficultsituationforboththeboy asanindividualandresidentialcommunitymembersingeneral

Physicalandpsychologicalchanges

Youngerstudentsshouldbepreparedforthephysicalandpsychologicalchangestheywill experienceduringadolescence,sothattheyarefamiliarwithwhatwillhappen

Howtodealwithroutine

Thedaytodayroutineofboardinglifecanbedifficultforsomeboys Itwouldbehelpfulto talkoverwithyoursonhowtheroutinecanworktohisadvantageandalsostrategiesfor copingwiththeroutineofboardinglife

Academicexpectations

Boyscomingfromotherschools,especiallysmallerschools,mayfindtheacademicprogram difficultordaunting.Ithelpsifyouhavediscussedwhatappropriateexpectationsandgoalsboth ofyouhavesothatyoursondoesnotholdanunrealisticideaofwhatheisexpectedtoachieve.

Thereasonforchangingschoolsandenteringboarding

Itisimportantthatyoursonknowswhyheisenteringboardingandisawareofthe opportunitiesofferedbytheCollege

Expressingconcerns

Itisimportantthatboyslearntoexpressanyconcerns,difficultiesorproblems(aswellasjoys andachievements)tostaff.Ifaboyhideshisconcernsordoesnotexpressthemtoanyone, withsuchalargenumberofboarders,thesemaynotbenoticedatanearlystage.

Itisessentialthatyoursonrealisesthathavingdifficulties,orjustbaddays,isnormaland thatitisbeneficialtotalkaboutthem.

Hosts

Parentalsupervisionandafamilyenvironmentareexpectedforallweekendleave.Discussion ofwhoisandwhoisnotasuitablehostwhileyoursonisatboardingschoolwouldbehelpful. Youwillhavetocompletea‘LeaveArrangementsForm’whichlistswhoyouwillallowyour sontovisitorstaywithonleave.Theschooldoesnotpermitovernightleavewithyounghosts.

Security

Inaboardingsituationthereisthepotentialfortheft Boysneedtobeawareofthe importanceoftakingcareoftheirownpropertybymakingsureeverythingisnamedandis notleftlyingaroundandensuringthatmoneyandvaluablesarestoredinthein-room lockbox

Theyshouldalsobeawarethatthepracticeof‘borrowing’otherpeople’spropertywithout permissionisnotacceptable

Conflict

Inacommunitysituationitisimportantthateveryonehasrespectandtoleranceforother people’sspace,feelings,privacyandproperty However,itisinevitablethatattimesconflict betweendifferentpeoplewillariseandsomediscussiononhowtodealwiththiswouldbe helpful

Budgeting

Itisimportantthatyoursonknowshowmuchmoneyhewillhaveaccesstoandwhatheis allowedtospenditon Learninghowtomakechoicesaboutwhattospendmoneyonisa vitallifeskill

Communicationwithhome

Itwouldbehelpfultonegotiatehowoftenyouwouldlikeyoursontocommunicatewith homeandbywhatmeans Studentsdonothaveaccesstotheirphonesbetweenhouse meetingsat640pmandapproximately745amthenextmorningonschoolnights Students canaccesstheirphonebetweenstudyandbedtimewithpermissionfromstafftocontact home,orcanbereachedbycallingthehousephone

Afterall,mostparentswouldsurelyexpecttheirsonstoprefertoliveathomeratherthan elsewhere.Oftenhomesicknessreflectsaverypositiverelationshipwithfamilyandfriendsand thehomeenvironment.Wehaveincludedanumberofobservationsonthisproblemandfeel thatoursuggestionsmayhelpyoursontoovercomethisveryrealdifficultyasquicklyaspossible.

Itisimportantforyoursontorealisethattheyarelikelytofeelhomesickfromtimetotime.It issomethingthattheyshouldnothidefrombutfaceupto.Parentscanassistbyemphasising theneedforcompleteinvolvementinandoutoftheclassroom.Pleasediscourageyourson fromringingyouconstantlyintheearlystages.

Wehavenoticedsomanytimesthataboy,apparentlycopingwiththeproblemquitewell, afterringinghomesuffersasetback.

Parentsarelikelytohearof,orexperience,theworstofyourson’shomesickness.Boarderswill tendtomessageorringwhentheyarefeelingattheirlowest.Theywillalsotendto exaggeratetheworstfeaturesoftheresidentialcommunityinanefforttoconvinceyouto takethemaway

Arecurrenceoftheproblemisquitecommonafterthefirstfewweekendsorschoolholidays However,itisusuallyovercomeveryquicklyuponreturningtoschool Furthertothis,too manyoutingsoverthefirstfewweekendscanmakeitdifficultforyoursonmakingthebreak fromhome

Weencourageyoutoletyoursonexperience,asmuchaspossible,thenormalactivitiesofthe boardinghouse,particularlyduringweekends,andthereforesuggestthatyoudonotprolong thebreakbytakingthemouttoooftenduringthisperiodofsettlingin

PleaseencourageyoursontoseehisDirectorofResidence,HouseMotheroranotherstaff memberheiscomfortablewithiftheproblemseemstobereachingintolerablelevels Often discussinghisfeelingswithsomeonenotdirectlyinvolvedisofgreatassistance

Wedonotwishtoalarmyouinanyway,butpurelymakeyouawareofaverycommon,and usuallyshort-termproblem.Itisalsoouraimtohelpyouandyoursoncopewiththe sometimesdifficultsettlinginperiod.

Understanding,patience,andfirmnesswouldappeartobethemostimportantqualities necessaryforaquickandrelativelysmoothadjustmenttothenewenvironment.Aboveall, pleasedonothesitatetocontactyourson’sDirectorofResidenceifyouwishtodiscussthe issue.

Aswellasyoursonexperiencinghomesicknessitisnotuncommonforyou,asparents,toalso feel‘homesick’foryourson.Theobservationsbelowmighthelpyoucopewithyourownsenseof loss.Thisfeelingmaynotbeasobviousforyouasitisforyoursonbecauseyourdailyroutine continues,butacknowledgingitisjustasimportant.

Whenyoursongoestoboardingschoolthereisachangeinthestructureofparenting becausethedailydependenceofyoursonisnolongerpresent.Yoursonwillquicklyestablish anincreasinglevelofindependence.Parentsareoftencaughtunawareofthissudden change.Ifyoursonismakingthistransitionsmoothlyitisasignthat,asparents,youhave preparedhimwellforadulthood.

Despiteplanningforyoursontogointoboarding,therealitycomessuddenly-onedayheis athomeandthenextheisnot.Donotunderestimatetheeffectitmayhaveonyou,andfeel freetocontacttheDirectorofResidenceortheHeadofBoardingaboutyourownconcernsas wellasthoseofyourson

1.Chapel

PrayerandthecelebrationoftheEucharistareafocalpointoflifeatAquinasCollege.

Themealtableisnotonlyaplacewhereweeat.Itisaplacewherewemeet,socialise,andget toknowothermembersofourcommunity Itisimportantthatwelearnthesocialskillsthat accompanyameal Everystudenthastherighttoenjoyhismealandtoexpectthatthosewho sharemealswithhimwilldemonstrategoodtablemanners.

Abalanceddietistheresponsibilityofeachstudent Studentsshouldendeavourtoeatawide varietyoffood,includingahealthyrangeoffruitandvegetables.

Ifanyoftheleaveguidelinesarebreached thisisdeemedasaseriousmatterandthe studentmaybegatedordeniedresidence

MakingLeaveArrangements

Theprocedureforparentsandhoststakingboardersoutisasfollows:

ParentsorGuardianscompleteanonlineleaverequestformthroughtheREACHplatform. Alternatively,yoursonnotifiesyouofhisleaveintentionsbyfillingouthisREACHleave request.

OncetheDirectorofResidenceandstudent’sparentsapprovetherequesttoconfirmitis appropriate,leaveisgranted.
