how the birds are flapping their wings, now see how they change direction using their wings and tail. What is the locomotive force behind this flight ‐ it is the life energy of the bird’. What I learnt that day was unique. It gave me an aim in life.” ‐ Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

This month, we pay homage to our beloved 11th President of India ‐ Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. India has had many leaders who were inspirational; but what separates Dr Kalam from others, is his unique way of connecting with Youth of India and his work towards igniting young minds. I want to talk in this issue of newsletter about the pedagogical shifts in Education. And I again quote Dr Kalam here. In one of his books, he talks about how one discussion in his school class changed his life. The topic of discussion was 'How Birds Fly’. His teacher, Sivasubramania Iyer, first drew a sketch of a bird with a tail, wings and head and explained how a bird flew. But the paradigm shift happened later ‐ "The same day he took us to the Rameswaram seashore where we saw dozens of seabirds flying. My teacher said, 'Look

The reason I am talking about this pedagogical shift is people have different views regarding pedagogy and contents of teaching ‐ learning, but most of them agree that marks and grades are quite meaningful in deciding the career growth of an individual. None of us remember our marks and grades at the primary level; but many do recollect the process they underwent in acquiring proficiency in Languages, Maths and Sciences. The teachers who inspired and events that shaped their attitude and mental makeup also remains etched in the memory. And, most of the time, these are the memories which shapes the future of a child in the long run. This is our aim; to not just educate a child but to create a learning, which stays with them for their life. And hopefully, this learning will make students of Aparna transform into a much responsible citizen of the country.
