Dear Readers, It’s time to wrap up at ANZA for 2019. It has been another incredible year of events, activities and community outreach.

Given the time of year and with Christmas music on regular rotation in my house, the theme of 'Comfort & Joy' seemed fitting for this issue.

We kicked off the festive season in style at ANZA with our annual Members' Christmas Lunch (p.21) and Children’s Christmas Party (p.22).

It is also a theme close to my heart as I reflect on 2019. My year started wth the loss of two family members, which put a damper on expat life. However, being part of ANZA has definitely helped me find moments of 'Comfort & Joy' throughout the year. From the friends who have offered practical and moral support; to the different events and acitivities which have provided moments of levity and fun. I am eternally grateful.

I asked our contributors to share their own stories of ‘Comfort & Joy’ and they delivered across a wide range of topics - art, music, books, food and travel. I hope these stories will inspire our readers, particularly those who may be finding this time of year a little difficult, to find the positives in Jakarta life.

ANZA House will be closed from 21 December until 6 January, so our staff and volunteers can enjoy a much-deserved break. However, we have some fantastic events planned for 2020 (p.7), I hope you will be able to join us Happy Holidays!

THE GIFTS OF JAKARTA LIFE

One of the most helpful pieces of advice that I received when I first moved to Jakarta, was from a member who said something like this: "You will have 'Indo days', and the best thing you can do, is just accept that you will have them. You may feel teary or even angry, but just realise that the next day will be better again."

Sure enough, I have had days when I have felt frustrated, the supermarkets are different; or I may be missing my old life, family or friends; or the traffic is bad, or... the list goes on.

But, the next day brings reminders of all the fabulous things about living in Jakarta. We have all made amazing local and international friends; Extended our cooking repertoire; Donated our energy to helping someone less fortunate; Visited amazing destinations; Viewed exotic wildlife......

As I look back over 2019, I am reminded that many of my happy memories are wrapped up in 'ANZA paper.'

We have: • Celebrated motherhood at our Mothers' Day Morning Tea • Commemorated Australia and Waitangi Day with a sausage sizzle • Started Happy Hours on Friday nights for members and guests • Danced, eaten and celebrated at our Under the Sea Ball and the Melbourne Cup, • Devoured Usni and Nia's scones jam and cream, • Been helped in so many ways by PaK Eko, • Kept safe by our 3 security men: Suji, Deden and Harianto, • Enjoyed Tasmanian sparkling wine, and scrumptious food courtesy of the Australian Embassy at our fabulous Christmas lunch • Bought quality books at our library, • Set up our new Thrift Shop

Worked hard at the various exercise classes Sung along with our children at Playgroup and Music Time and most of all we have made connections which we will have for the rest of our lives.

ANZA's year is drawing to a close, and some of us are experiencing the sadness that comes with saying goodbye to friends, who are finishing their expat time in Jakarta and returning home.

Some are also experiencing sadness as we reminisce about Christmas traditions and family and friends that we miss.

If you are travelling back "home" or staying here in your "Indo home" over the next few weeks, I hope you experience the joy that comes from creating new memories and traditions.

On behalf of the ANZA Committee, I would like to wish you and your loved ones, a Happy Christmas and a fulfilling and exciting New Year.

3 We were very proud to see our President, Kerryn represent ANZA at What’s New Jakarta - Female Founders Forum. The panel of inspirational ladies discussed “Giving Back to Jakarta” to an attentive audience at the Shangri-La Hotel.

4 Some of our members walked the runway at the Women Helping Women Charity Fashion Parade, while others enjoyed the show and reception.

Member spotlight Adéle Tolken Beuthe Member since 2017 Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m a South African artist and designer. I have two beautiful daughters. My husband and I have been expats since 2006. This is our second posting in Jakarta. We lived here for 2.5

years from 2008 - 2010.

How long have you been in Jakarta this time?

Since June 2017 How did you learn about ANZA? Through a friend who invited me to join bootcamp.

What has been your favourite ANZA event(s) or activities?

The ANZA Ball and Melbourne Cup. Not only to attend but also to help with set-up.

Use 3 words to describe living in Jakarta.

TII (This is Indonesia) - a bit of a mantra to get you through the ups and downs.

What’s your favourite area in Jakarta and why?

When I do get out of my “Kemang” bubble I like to go to the Golden Triangle - Senopati, Senayan and SCBD. It's fun to wander around the shops at Grand Indonesia then enjoy the spectacular city view from Skye Bar. Where was the last great meal you had in Jakarta?

Fujin on Jl. Gunawarman. I recommend trying the gyoza and whiskey highballs.

Where would we find you on a typical Sunday morning?

In my home studio working on my next artwork. Or outside enjoying a cup of coffee after a workout at F45 Kemang

Any advice to a new arrival to Jakarta?

Make sure to try the five national foods: Nasi Goreng, Gado-Gado, Soto, Sate and Rendang.

Can you recommend a must-see/must-do in Jakarta?

We like to take visitors to Kota Tua (Old Town) and to have lunch at Cafe Batavia Can you recommend a great weekend trip?

I wish we did more weekend getaways because the few we have done have been fantastic. I loved spending a long weekend at Roemah Pulo Manuk (IG @ Roemahpulomanuk), a beach house on Pantai Pulo Manuk, approx 4 hours drive from Jakarta. Pulau Sepa is also a fun one-night getaway or camping around Sentul.

2019 Life Members Honours Each year the ANZA Mains Committee looks to recognise our most dedicated and longest-serving volunteer members by awarding them Life Membership.

Catherine has held a few roles across ANZA including Front Desk Volunteer, Membership Coordinator and Orphans Playgroup Coordinator Many new arrivals would have been warmly welcomed by Catherine at a Friday Coffee Morning. She has always been willing to share her knowledge and help others find their feet. She is affectionately known as ANZA’s Shopping Expert especially when it comes to fabrics.

Catherine’s dedication to the Orphans Playgroup has been inspiring.

Catherine’s passion for travel and outdoor pursuits has led to some amazing experiences around the world but she has recently repatriated to the green hills of NZ. We presented her with Life Membership just before her departure and hope she will be back for a visit in the future.

Renee is one of our most creative members and has worked behind the scenes on many of our events. For the last two years she has been the ANZA Ball Coordinator bringing to life the whimsical and colourful themes of ANZA in Wonderland and Under the Sea This year she also took on the role of ANZA House Manager and has added more colour to our common space by introducing ANZA Artist Corner.

Renee was pleasantly surprised to receive her Life Membership at our Members' Christmas Lunch.

She shared a few words about how ANZA helped her settle into life in Jakarta and how much she values the friendships she has made.

Tell us a little bit about Merdeka Coffee and how it was established.

Merdeka Coffee is a boutique coffee company dedicated to sourcing and roasting a selection of the best Indonesian coffees.

My Kiwi husband, Alun and I established the company in 2001 as a micro-roasting company focused on the array of wonderful Arabica coffees that are available across Indonesia.

We felt that our initial clientele in Jakarta were missing out on the best beans in the world, from their own backyard.

These days we do not only roast, but also export green beans around the world. We consider ourselves champions for the small coffee shop and home roasters all over the globe.

With access to such a wide range of unique beans we take great pride in promoting what we consider to be the best that Indonesia has to offer.

What is a point of difference about your company?

We are a family-run company and are very passionate about encouraging economic and social development of our partner communities through fair and equitable trade. We believe in buying directly from the estates and the small holders we deal with. This helps ensure they receive a fair price for their beans and we can benefit from having a consultative role in the quality of the green beans we purchase.

We have travelled across Indonesia in search of the best and most flavoursome cherries. From North Sumatra and Java through Flores and East Timor and across to Irian Jaya and continue to visit our partners on a regular basis.

Indonesia is known for Robusta and Arabica coffee. What is the difference?

There are four main sub-types of Arabica found in Indonesia.

The differences between these sub-varietals are mostly in the yields on the tree and sometimes in the size of the cherry.

Robusta is a hardier tree. The beans from Robusta plant have a higher level of caffeine than the Arabica plants and are often used in instant coffee. Robusta makes up the bulk of coffee exported from Indonesia, but it is the regional Arabicas that make the archipalego famous.

We only use Arabica beans, although we use a small amount of high quality local washed Robusta in our Espresso blend.

13 How are coffee beans cultivated?

Coffee trees flower twice a year, the flowers being fragrant, white bunches that hang from the trees. Only 25% of these flowers will go on to be fertilised and produce small buds that later grow into coffee beans. The beans take several months to ripen. Once they have reached a level of ripeness where the outer skin turns red, the picking begins.

The majority of our partners hand pick, so the selection process is far better than bigger estates that often strip pick using machinery.

The estates and farmers we purchase from use one of two different methods to process the picked cherries into "green coffee". The processed beans are always packed in standard 60kg bags for transportation from the estate or village to our roastery in Cigajur.

What is involved in the roasting process?

Roasting is a complex process that involves taking the green beans and carefully applying heat to create a chemical change in the beans, which will draw out their aromas. Each coffee has a precise temperature and time of roasting.

Many modern machines are controlled by computer processors, but like fine wine-making, roasting requires the roast master to be able to add their own personal touch to the process.

We searched the world for a rotary roaster that would allow us to control every stage of the process. Our machine is a classic drum roaster from Antigua, Guatemala.

Other than ANZA, where can we taste and purchase Merdeka Coffee?

The closest location to enjoy a cup or buy fresh retail pack would be at our cafe, Antipodean Kemang. We have several Antipodean Cafes in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

We also supply various outlets throughout Asia, Oceania, USA and Europe.

What future plans do you have for the business?

We are looking to transition the entire business, the coffee and the cafe, under a single brand - Antipodean. We recently opened a new Antipodean cafe in Manila. We are currently expanding Antipodean Kemang, after taking over the neighbouring space. (Antipodean Kemang, Hero Kemang Villa Complex, Jl Kemang Selatan I)

Some of the specialty coffee beans available from Merdeka Coffee include:

Single Origins

Flores Arabica - This Arabica cups soft, with hints of florals, chocolate fudge and mild, sweet nectars. It is very low in acid and clean on the palate.

Aceh Arabica - The bean is organic and fair traded.

Sourced from a small group of co-op growers from around the Takengon area.

An earthy, fruity taste with a hint of fine acidity and wild field mushrooms. Underlying vanilla and cinnamon notes. A favourite for beginning the day, with a light to medium body and a clean palate.

Toraja Arabica - thick and syrupy with a good level of fruitness and a touch of toffee on the palate. It has a very clean, crisp aftertaste. The body of the coffee is surprisingly heavy and the aroma of caramel mixed with fresh herbs is unmistakeable.

Blends Breakfast Blend One of our more popular local coffee blends. It is a blend of three different origins. It is well suited as a breakfast blend - with a lighter body, yet quite distinctive cupping characteristics. The backbone of this blend is Java, but the other two coffees must remain a guarded secret.

Espresso Blend - Summer Blend We take some of the very best Arabica varietals for this seasonal espresso blend. Three of the beans in this blend originate from highland villages in Sumatra. These beans are rare and the crop yield is so low, that our annual roasting uses up the entire supply. The Espresso is a delectable mix of flavours - aniseed, brown sugars, excessive fruitiness and syrupy molasses.

Top tip: Different coffee sizes are needed for different brewing methods. Antipodean staff can help get the appropriate grind for your press or coffee machine.

Living in Jakarta Questions How do you like to spend your Sundays?

When you work in hospitality it's rare to have weekends free, so I am often working on Sundays. But that is with the family. I love to visit different markets around Jakarta Where is your favourite spot to escape Jakarta?

Bogor for fresh air and open spaces. Also Bandung, which has lots of great cafes.

Must visit destination in Indonesia?

I am originally from Jogja and highly recommend visiting the region, there is a lot to see and do. Bali is also a favourite with so many options.

In October, we launched weekly Kids Music Classes for ages 6months to 4years. Introducing the man bringing so much joy to our Tuesday mornings.

Hello, my name is Oscar Soesmono, I'm an Indonesian and I am a music teacher. I have been teaching music for 20 years.

In the past, I was working for several international schools and national plus schools around Jakarta and Bintaro. I was teaching different levels from early years to secondary school.

Before teaching music, I was a Teaching Assistant at one of the international schools in Pejaten. I was assisting the reception teacher who sang a lot, so I decided to look for a guitar so I could accompany them. In my third week of work there, the Principal offered me a teaching position and I said 'Yes!'.

Music has always been my passion. I joined bands and my last group was a gospel band, in which I played as a drummer in the church. I also write songs and arrange music in the recording studio.

Music brings happiness to me and I always want to spread it among others.

I play several instruments including piano/ keyboard, guitar/bass guitar, ukulele and also drum. My favourite instruments are bass guitar and drums because it's the beat of the band.

"I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony I'd like to hold it in my arms And keep it company'" ~ The New Seekers I love teaching young children music. Seeing them singing and dancing to my rhythms brings laughter and happiness to me.

I hope I can influence children with my music, and give them the love to spread with the world!

ANZA BOOK CLUB 'IT ENDS WITH US'

The ANZA Book Club finished it’s first book! We read It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover and the discussion was so intense that we exceeded our one hour slot. Maybe it was the book or maybe it was us - the discussion meandered from the book to our lives, back and forth, almost like the narrative of the book itself.

The story of Lily, the main protagonist, starts slowly, perhaps the author is trying to lull us into a place of familiarity before picking up the pace and then literally slapping us with a harsh truth that those of us who may have dealt with it - first or second hand - tend to sweep it under the rug. This

Hoover masterfully weaves romance, everyday life and basic ‘normalcy’ with the reality that domestic violence is actually the ‘normal’ for so many and no one talks about it.

The narrative is skillfully created to almost read like three novels in one - there is the present Lily taking us through her budding romance with handsome neurosurgeon Ryle; then there is the adolescent Lily telling us about her relationship with homeless Atlas through letters to Ellen Degeneres; and there is the vulnerable daughter Lily who has stood as a bystander in her parents’ abusive marriage.

A drinks night with a twist. In the tradition of our other dress-up drinks nights this year, ANZA held its first Halloween themed drinks night on October 25th.

Our events team had a great time making zombies, ghosts, giant spiders and stuffing baby dolls into bird cages for our ANZA House Bed Dead & Breakfast.

Muddle lime & mint

Add 60ml vodka & 45ml lychee juice/syrup to shaker

It was a full house for this year's Melbourne Cup Brunch at our elegant new venue, the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place. It was a gorgeous day in Melbourne as it was in Jakarta.

Our guests had really gone to town and everyone looked super glamorous, with beautiful and creative outfits, hats and fascinators. Our gentleman looked super dapper too. There was no problem choosing our Fashions on the Field finalists.

The sparkling wine flowed well all day. Gary

did an incredible job as our MC for the day. Our Sweepstakes were fun and we had some great prizes donated by our supportive sponsors for the raffles and silent auctions. The race was exciting and the room was on its feet for the duration. The energy continued as everyone filled the dance floor.

It’s nice to get involved. But it’s 100% more fun when you have people to do it with.

Some of my most cherished ANZA memories from this year have been made, not at an ANZA event, but behind the scenes - working with Zani on how to give our zombie a more realistic butt; learning how to turn cardboard into fake wood from Julia; assembling goody bags with Fran, Nicky et al; getting stuffed to the gills tasting and providing feedback on the 3 course menu at the Fairmont for the ANZA Ball with Renee, Kerryn & Adele; pushing

boxes full of goody bags around the Ballroom on the morning of the ANZA Ball; drinking copious amounts of wine with Kerryn while talking to a potential sponsor.

In these moments you get to spend quality time with people, and these are the moments that make me glad that I’m a part of the 'behind the scenes' team at ANZA. I’ve been so in awe of everyone’s talents here - with so many backgrounds and skill sets - and the outcomes, as you will all agree, have been pretty fantastic.

A Merry Members' Christmas Lunch

On a stormy December day, 56 of our members attended a fabulous Christmas lunch, with the Australian Ambassador, Gary Quinlan and the New Zealand Ambassador, Jonathan Austin and ten Australian Embassy staff.

We were able to tick off many of our Jakarta Christmas wish list items, including a great location at The Official Residence at The Australian Embassy, totally scrumptious food, amazing wines and love and laughter with friends.

Two Secret Santas made an appearance in their Santa Safari Suits and thongs and cheekily gave out the gifts.

A big thank you to the members for attending, and because of the generosity of Ambassador Quinlan and The Australian Embassy, we not only had a memorable time, but we also raised substantial funds for our Social Welfare Programs.

ANZA CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY

On the 8th of December we hosted our annual Children’s Christmas Party. It was a wonderful, inclusive day of festive celebration.

The children were very excited to welcome our special guest - Santa, who arrived in a festive bajai! Families had the opportunity to meet Santa and have a professional photo taken.

Families enjoyed the variety of entertainment on offer.

There was a magical bubble performance, where children got to take to the stage and step inside the lifesize bubble wand!

A balloon artist pumped out fantastic balloon sculptures and a face paint artist enabled the children to live out their festive fantasies!

In the backyard there was a fabulous photo backdrop; creative arts and craft station for producing colourful tree ornaments and a variety of sensory play activities, providing a wonderful prompt for families to interact together and have some messy fun.

The party hosted by the ANZA Playgroup Co-ordinators was made possible by the help of many. Thank you to our event sponsors British School Jakarta, Australian Independent School, ACG School Jakarta and the New Zealand School Jakarta The beautiful lunch spread was enjoyed by all and included goodies donated by Mamma Rosy, Mia Chia Snack, Rosalie Cheese, Hummus and Co and Jika Chocolat.

We are so thankful for the wonderful families who are members of ANZA. It was a lovely opportunity to get together and celebrate the magic and joy of the season through the eyes of our smallest members.

By Zani van Staden, ANZA Social Welfare Director If you’ve ever wondered what exactly it is that ANZA does, it can be explained as a two-fold purpose: 1) To help people from all nationalities settle into Jakarta and provide a space for people to connect; and 2) To connect with and give back to the Jakarta community Our goal is simple: Connecting communities.

ANZA currently supports 17 different local organisations (known as Yayasan), which range from schools, orphanages, learning centres, community centres for kids and the elderly, and centres for people who are differently-abled.

We also have a Student Sponsorship Program and Medical Sponsorship Program.

The Yayasans that we support do amazing, life-changing, and extremely important work within their communities. As ANZA, we try our best to support these Yayasan in a variety of ways, including financial support, volunteering and donating of goods. We have a Social Welfare Committee, currently consisting of 14 members, who help to coordinate the different projects and volunteer their time and skills.

On 15 November, we hosted a special Social Welfare ExravagANZA coffee morning, where members had the opportunity to find out more about ANZA’s social welfare activities and how we can all help to make a difference in Jakarta.

We had guest speakers from a number of the Yayasan that ANZA supports, including Goodwill International, Kampung Kids, Sayap Ibu Bintaro, Heesu, Wisma Cheshire and Globalindo. The morning started off with a fantastic

dance from Mutiara Harapan School, followed by informative sessions from each guest speaker about their various projects. We also launched our Student Sponsorship Christmas Appeal, which is a time of the year where we are looking for new individuals to sponsor students from financially challenging circumstances to be able to attend school. We ended the morning with coffee and socialising while browsing beautiful products from Heesu, YSIB, Wisma Cheshire and Manfred Lai. ANZA has been supporting some of the Yayasan for as long as 20 years, and it was truly a special morning that celebrated the amazing work happening all over Jakarta.

If you are reading this, perhaps contemplating the meaning of life and what your purpose in Jakarta is, I would like to encourage you to get involved. There are so many different ways in which you can make a difference: 1. VOLUNTEER at projects or on an ANZA Committee We need English teachers, computer teachers, project managers, marketing gurus, crafty people, people who love admin, people who love events and just about any skill you have that you’d like to throw into the hat.

2. Become a DONOR/SPONSOR If you would like to donate money to a worthy cause but have no idea how to go about it, you can become an ANZA donor and we can distribute the funds where they are most needed. We always need financial support to be able to continue monthly contributions to our projects. You can also

become a sponsor for a student or patient, funding their education or medical procedure.

3. DONATE new or second-hand items ANZA can donate relevant products to Yayasan or sell other items at our thrift shop or garage sales to raise funds.

4. Support EVENTS and ANZA HOUSE All our events help to raise funds for social welfare projects, and your coffee and scone ends up making it possible for someone else to have a meal for the day.

Doing great work would not be possible without the people involved, so I hope you’ll consider becoming part of the crew.

The Social Welfare team meet at ANZA house every second Tuesday of the month, so hope to see you there soon.

Creating Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

by Zani van Staden, ANZA Social Welfare Director ANZA has been supporting Yayasan Cheshire Indonesia (Wisma Cheshire) for many years and with Christmas time approaching, this is definitely one of the organisations to have on your list to support.

Established in 1974 as a registered not-for-profit foundation, Wisma Cheshire is a home for people with disabilities and is managed by a committee of Indonesian and Expatriate volunteers. At the moment, the home cares for 24 residents with disabilities of varying ages. Almost all residents are confined to wheelchairs and stay at Wisma Cheshire due to their families’ financial difficulties or insufficient facilities to care for them.

Wisma Cheshire’s goal is to help residents gain the skills and confidence to be able to adapt to independent living. Vocational training is provided in areas such as carpentry, handicrafts, sewing and tailoring, basic administration, IT skills, and English language, all of which can be harnessed in the drive towards securing financial independence. Wisma Cheshire also provides residential facilities, food, physiotherapy, psychological care, and nursing at no charge.

Over the last two years, five of Wisma Cheshire’s residents have successfully found work or started their own business and have moved out of Wisma Cheshire, embarking on their first steps of achieving independent living.

The residents at Wisma Cheshire are also encouraged to learn skills that can help to support The Red Feather Shop, which is situated at the home and open daily. The handicraft items are well-known and include various household items such as table mats, napkins, embroidered towels, bottle bags, gift and shoe bags and much, much more.

The woodwork section produces beautiful dolls’ houses and furniture, cradles, cots, and castles, children’s easels, desks, tables and chairs. Wisma Cheshire recently hosted their annual Christmas Bazaar, where they also included a wide selection of Christmas goods, cards and gift tags. If you missed the bazaar, we sincerely hope that you’ll make a plan to stop by the Red Feather Shop soon.

The Happiest Place On Earth

destination - global Planning a visit to Disneyland in the near future? ANZA’s biggest Disney-fan, Renee has some helpful hints for making it the most magical trip possible.

I never got to visit Disneyland as a child but I have definitely made up for it in my adult years. My family of four love Disney holidays.

We have been to Disneyland California, Disney World Orlando, Tokyo Disney, Disney Sea, Disney Hong Kong, a Disney Cruise and hope to visit the remaining two very soon.

Why visit Disney with young children? Many say “It’s expensive and they won’t remember it.” I say there is nothing better than seeing Disney through the eyes of a child, the wonder and excitement in their eyes is truly Disney Magic.

A few of my top tips for making the most of your experience: 1. Do your research. Disney is not a place to just take it as it comes. There is a plethora of information available online but some of my favourite resources are: a) DFBGuide on YouTube - a dedicated Disney food guide but also looks at hotels, parks and cruises (mostly in the U.S.) b) Escapewithkids.com has some great information c) I have found Disneyland Facebook groups helpful too

2. Stay in Disney Hotels to take advantage of the extra magic hours for guests. You get an extra hour in the park before general crowds and if you plan well, you can do quite a few of the more popular rides early with no lines

3. Download your park app, this is your go-to for ride wait times, show times, places to eat, booking fast passes - everything Disney 4. If you have young children take or hire a pram (stroller). Disney is a lot of walking and little legs get tired.

5. If you buy merchandise, the shops will send it to your room to save carrying it around the park all day.

6. Watch the fireworks one night, they are amazing. Grab some snacks and get a position early so you and the kids can see.

The second night use this time to go on a few extra rides while everyone else is busy watching the show.

7. Weekdays are often a lot quieter than weekends. Also, try to avoid any National holidays.

8. Look at buying a Photo Pass, It’s a great way to get family photos, photographers are positioned around the parks to capture photos for you. Many of the rides also have photos while you ride, these will all be sent to your Disney app to download. They become a great memory and save you having to carry around your camera.

9. Book a character meal, it’s the easiest way to meet the characters as they go table to table and you don’t waste any time in lines at the park trying to see them.

10. Go to Disney!!

AROUND BOROBUDUR

Kota Magelang is home to the magnificent Borobudur Temple, one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Indonesia. As Caroline discovered there is more to this region to explore.

Located about 5km from Borobudur Temple is the idyllic Karanganyar Village, which is surrounded by the Manoreh Mountains and offers an amazing natural environment. Throughout the year visitors can explore the tobacco plantations, traditional markets and appreciate the gorgeous scenery the region has to offer.

Pottery Village Supported by UNESCO Karanganyar is famous for pottery and has a UNESCO supported village where local artists can promote their work. Eighty per cent of the villagers currently make pottery for a living and the skills are passed on from generation to generation. They offer a wide array of pottery including small and big plates, vases, pots, plus much more. Visitors can get their hands dirty and participate in classes.

The kiln process does take time, but don’t worry, they will help to send it through the post.

Classic Car Ride Enjoy the beautiful panorama of the mountains with the wind through your hair in a colourful, classic Volkswagen 182 (see above). These convertibles can fit up to five people and can be hired with a driver included. Visit local attractions like the Junkyard Autopark, camera house, Chicken Church, Pawon Temple, Candirejo Tourism Village.

As you will be travelling along unsealed, village roads it is advised to bring a mask, sunglasses and sunblock to protect yourself from heat and dust.

Sharing the Joy of Baking

By Emmaleen Murray, ANZA Berita Editor Photos by Renee Clarke If you have ever searched for a custom cake in Jakarta, then you may be familiar with Amber Does Cakes. Owner Amber Haque creates delicious works of art, which have graced many a celebration, especially amongst the expat community.

Now you can learn how to bake like Amber, with her newest venture Saffron & Fig. She has teamed up with fellow baking extraordinaire, Amena 'Bambi' Khan, owner of Sugar Bambs, to help novice and enthusiasts discover the joy of baking. I attended Saffron & Fig's second-ever class with fellow ANZA member, Renee.

Each class has 10-15 participants and runs for four hours at a private residence in Cilandak. Amber and Bambi go through six mouthwatering recipes as participants follow along, asking questions as needed. The ladies have lived in Jakarta for several years and can recommend where to source ingredients or any alternatives.

Anyone can read a recipe but when you watch an expert at work, you can pick up subtleties in the process that would otherwise take hours of practice to learn. For example, I realised for airier cakes, I really need to embrace sifting.

As the class progresses the air fills with the most divine aromas, causing our tummies to rumble. During a break, we all bond over our baking experiences (from delicious to disastrous) and enjoy light refreshments. Be warned about overindulging in snacks because the best part of the day is at the end, when we get to taste ALL the amazing creations. We leave the class with full tummies, brains and hearts.

A few days later, the class WhatsApp chat is lively with participants sharing their creations. Renee made a decadent Sticky Date Pudding, while I attempted the fluffy Banana Cinnamon Cake recipe. It was one of the best cakes I have

ever made. My family are overjoyed about this upskilling and I am excited to try more recipes in the near future.

Traditions are an important part of the festive season. When you are living or travelling overseas it can sometimes be challenging to recreate those traditions. But when you are successful at recreating or adapting your traditions, they can help create special memories and bonds amongst families and friends. Some of our members share their favourite Christmas traditions.

Every Christmas Eve my dad would read “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore. My sister and I would snuggle up with my dad and a hot chocolate in our Christmas PJ’s and listen to him read our favorite Christmas story, excited to go to bed and wake up to see that Father Christmas had been.

When I was a child, my parents would put up and decorate the Christmas tree on the 23rd.

My brother and I were locked out of the living room until Christmas Eve evening. We would return from church on Christmas Eve and see the tree for the first time. It was always a very special moment going inside together, singng a Christmas carol, seeing the tree all lit up. My father was always playing the piano when we entered. Of course getting to open the presents under the tree was exciting.

Christmas is the only time I eat turkey. If we are in Jakarta, then usually order the turkey from Kemchicks to prepare for Christmas Day lunch. It's actually a traditional dish that I adopted after meeting my husband and his family, who are orignally from Scotland.

My Mum made my brothers and I have a photo with Santa every year until we were teens. She displays them all at Christmas time. It's fun to see the changes over the years. I've continued the tradition with my kids. They've spent every one of their Christmases in Jakarta, so most of our Santa photos are from ANZA Christmas Parties, which I think is pretty special.

Christmas Fruit Cakes are a fairly traditional gift in Australia and particularly good for giving to my husband's clients and colleagues.

Being in Jakarta this year, I've had to diverge from my usual recipe and had a lot of help from other expats to find ingredients. Half the battle is knowing where to go.
