EDITOR'S NOTE Hi Everyone!

First things first, I am sad to say, that my family is leaving Jakarta at the beginning of June. So this will be my last issue. However, Michelle is still designing ways I can help from the U.S.

Because I will soon be leaving Indonesia, I took my last few opportunities to get in as much travel as possible during my last few months. We headed down to a family wedding in Tasmania, met a visiting friend in Bali, spent a few days in Komodo National Park, hosted some family from Korea, and managed scouts trips to Bogor and Palau Seribu. My older kids and husband also had a chance to go camping in Sumatra while I stayed home with the “baby.”

Of course there are a few bucket items still left unticked—Papua, Banda Islands, the blue flame of the Kawah Ijen and the rhinos of Ujung Kulon. My kids are still a bit young at 2, 8 and 10 for the high adventure of the gorgeous volcano hikes that we’ve passed up on many island visits here. Still, I had an opportunity to visit Anak Krakatau (before it blew up), Kalimantan, many places in Bali, Lombok, Korea, my first trip to Australia, and many other local trips to Bogor, Bandung and Palau Seribu. The opportunities here are so rich. So amazing. I do truly hope to come back some day and tick off some of those remaining items. Everything here is extremely far from the place I call home.

For that reason, we decided to center this issue around travel. It’s a common Berita theme, but certainly one of the most fantastic aspects of living in Jakarta. Our jumping off point is already “far flung,” and it’s possible to go to amazing places in limited time.

As part of the travel theme, we held a cover photo contest with a grand prize of two free months membership at F45 Kemang.

Congratulations to Georgina who captured a gorgeous photo of Mt Bromo, another one of my favourite destinations.

I wish you all a great summer vacation and welcome you to touch base with me if your future travels take you to the U.S.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT This issue of the Berita magazine is based around travel. When I chat with ANZA members and realise how far many of us have travelled to get here, it becomes clear that no matter how much we have all travelled, we still desire to travel more. The excitement, the thrill, the opportunities that arise when we discover other lands, people, culture and food never passes; and our memories just become richer. Bring it on Indonesia !!!

Of course we cannot spend every moment travelling. Our time in Jakarta can sometimes be lonely, frustrating, tiring, sad and disappointing, especially if we don't embrace the opportunities given to us.

But, it can also be exciting, fun, informative, funny and altruistic. ANZA can help, by providing a variety of social situations and voluntary positions. There are two amazing teams of people here in ANZA who work happily and tirelessly to make Jakarta a better place for expats and locals: our Mains Committee, that manages the social (and fund-raising) part of ANZA, and our Social Welfare Committee, that manages the distribution of funds raised to ANZA’s social welfare program. You are invited to become involved in either or both.

None of us have specific qualifications or experience, but we have a desire to make a difference. Within these two teams are opportunities, and smaller teams for you to contribute to, whether it be for running the ANZA Ball, house events, marketing, sponsorship, money counting, back office… Being a part of a team means you never work alone, and it offers an amazing sense of belonging. Please consider if you have some time or energy that you could share with us, no experience necessary.

So many things have been happening at ANZA recently. I was grateful for the opportunity as President to lay a wreath on behalf of ANZA members at the ANZAC Day commemorations on

April 25th. A time of genuine respect for soldiers in the past who have given their lives, and currently serving soldiers for their contribution to world peace today.

We appreciated the opportunity as ANZA Committee members recently to meet with the Australian Ambassador at his residence for a working lunch, and offered further insight into what ANZA does here in Jakarta. We are hoping to forge a similar relationship with the New Zealand Embassy when the new Ambassador arrives.

A small group of members recently organised a Mother’s Day Treat, to help us celebrate our mums, have a good laugh, learn some new words and raise charitable funds (pg. 18). Many members and friends have explored their artistic side during our Paint & Sip and Lunch Paint events (pg. 16).

Mahjong and Bridge are happening, come and learn (pg. 14-15). If you have any suggestions about future opportunities to raise charitable funds, and to have fun please share with us.

Let’s work together to create our own happy memories here in Jakarta, and leave behind our own small footprint of kindness and caring.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Gary Quinlan Hello I’m Gary Quinlan, Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia and it’s a pleasure to be able to speak to ANZA members again.

ANZA makes a wonderful contribution to closer Indonesia-Australia ties across a broad range of areas and plays a vital role in the community here in Jakarta.

It’s now been 12 months since I arrived in Indonesia and what an incredibly busy time it’s been. Over the past year, Indonesia and Australia have signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, lifting the relationship between our two countries to the highest level, held our first ever Inter-faith Dialogue and signed the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The IA-CEPA agreement promises to transform the economic relationship between us in the years ahead.

Earlier this year, the Australian Embassy held our annual film festival, the Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia, in Jakarta, Bandung, Lombok, Makassar and Surabaya. We followed that with our first ever food festival, A Taste of Australia, in Jakarta. Both events were popular with Indonesians and Australians alike.

Over the next 12 months, the tempo of activities will remain high. We will build on our extensive partnership of cooperation that spans so many sectors to help each other achieve our shared goals. As two of the largest economies and democracies in the region, we are well placed to work together on our joint prosperity.

At the end of 2019, Australia and Indonesia will mark our 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. We are planning a number of events to celebrate that milestone so keep an eye out for them later this year.

Unfortunately, Indonesia has again experienced a number of natural disasters these past 12 months, which highlight just how important it is that Australians in Indonesia keep themselves informed about safety risks and subscribe to the Smartraveller.gov.au travel advice.

I encourage all Australians to subscribe with Smartraveller so they can access the latest travel advice and security updates and can make informed choices about their safety. It will also make it easier to contact you in an emergency.

ANZA Activity Highlights Lunch with Australian Ambassador: The ANZA Committee was delighted to be invited by Australian Ambassador, Mr. Gary Quinlan, to his residence for lunch one afternoon in April.

We ate and drank and laughed together for a few hours, whilst also discussing how ANZA and the Embassy can help one another to help Australians living in Jakarta.

Our president, Kerryn, made a lovely speech to the group, of which included 2 embassy representatives as well as the Ambassador and Vice Ambassador.

We are looking forward to continuing a relationship with the Ambassador and everyone at the Australian Embassy.

Thank you again to the Ambassador for graciously hosting us.

ANZAC day dawn service: On 25 April, a few of the Australian and Kiwi members of ANZA were proud to attend the ANZAC Dawn Service.

It was a dignifed and peaceful ceremony and was followed by an enjoyable Gunfire Breakfast after sunrise.

ANZA President Kerryn appreciated the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of all ANZA members.

Special Playgroup & Parental Talk by ACG : ACG School Jakarta hosted a wonderful playgroup session in April with arts and crafts, as well as games and songs, which all the children enjoyed.

The parents then had their turn when ACG Vice-Principle Jennifer gave an inspiring presentation about the importance of developing good reading habits from a young age.

A big thank you to ACG School Jakarta for this great day of activities!

New House Activities: Recently we had several new groups start up regular activities at ANZA. Bridge made a come-back (see page 14) , bootcamp sessions started up again with new trainers Ashanthi and Shannon, and a brand new Pilates class has begun on Tuesday mornings.

Fran Hohtoulas 1. When and why did you move to Jakarta?

Agh, the things we do for love...

My husband was presented with a work opportunity that brought us here. So, in late 2014, we embarked on our new adventure to Jakarta with our twin girls. Fast forward to now and we have forged our lives here.

2. What are your favourite aspects about Jakarta life?

The ongoing adventures that occur, no two days are the same. Indonesian people are really lovely, always smiling. They are really family oriented and that’s a wonderful thing. I especially love that it’s always hot, I don’t need to check the weather report in terms of layering up.

The huge help we get at home is fabulous. I have the privilege of spending more time with my family and can also be involved in projects.

3. How did you find out about ANZA? Before we did our look and see, my husband had made contact with a link lady, Annette, who drove to meet me in Kuningan, when I arrived. She was a breath of fresh air. When we arrived with 4 year old twins, my husband went to work after the first week here. I had no home help, needed to find a place to live and didn’t know anyone here. ANZA was where I came to for some familiarity as there was always someone to speak to and supported me greatly. The first period was challenging as I didn’t have my current networks. I really feel it’s important to remember this, and I enjoy making newbies feel welcome. It can be confronting being in a new and different place.

4. In what ways do you participate in ANZA and has that changed throughout your membership time?

I have been involved in ANZA in different ways from when I first started. I’ve been involved in membership, helping with Melbourne Cup and volunteering to teach English to refugees through an organisation called HELP. 5. What is the most surprising thing about your life in Jakarta?

My learning to be more tolerant of things that can’t be controlled. I’m usually ok with the crazy traffic situation, and I’ve really come to enjoy the impromptu adventures that unfold.

6. What aspects of your life back home or at other host countries are most different from living in Jakarta?

I am constantly surprised about the organised chaos in Jakarta and how people are generally really calm when driving cars or riding motorcycles, weaving through the traffic. Shopping for certain ingredients or items can prove challenging at the supermarket.

It’s not uncommon to hear ‘Habis’ meaning we don’t have this item any more, so, when you find it... stock up. Movies at the cinema are so much cheaper, date night at movies are a must, or even visiting solo also an option. Babysitter options are so much cheaper in Jakarta than back in Melbourne. It’s so much easier with all the home help! We are really spoilt here!!!

Cora BradyRobeau 1. When and why did you move to Jakarta?

My family and I moved here in July 2018. My husband Dominic had taken a

13 position as Head of School at the Tzu Chi Secondary School in North Jakarta.

4. In what ways do you participate in ANZA and has that changed throughout your membership time?

After spending 7 years in Europe close to my family in Ireland and Swindon, UK, we took the opportunity to be closer to his family in Australia.

Since returning to Jakarta I have been attending the Friday coffee mornings, which are great for connecting with other expats not just Australian and New Zealanders but many other nationalities. Just being able to chat freely about the good and not so good things of expat life is very important. Currently I am helping out with new members and have recently joined the Ball Committee; it’s a very creative group.

2. What are your favorite aspects about Jakarta life?

I enjoy going to the local pasar a couple of times a week, to pick up my fresh fruit and vegetables and other household things. This allows me to practice my Bahasa Indonesia as well as try out the local delicacies.

These local pasars have a bad reputation for their use of plastic so I bring my own reusable bags with me. This originally surprised the sellers, but now they accept it.

5. What aspects of your life back home or at other host countries are most different from living in Jakarta?

Well on this front I would have to say driving myself. I have lived as an expat in a few countries in the world in Swindon, UK where they have what is called the magic roundabout—drove there; Perth, Western Australia, with its hours of driving to get almost anywhere—drove there; Dubai UAE (in the desert)— drove there (even a camel) and The Hague, with trams, bicycle lines, buses, pedestrian as well as on the wrong side of the road—drove there. However, I have yet to sit in the driver's seat of our car in Jakarta traffic. Not

3. How did you find out about ANZA? This is in fact our second time relocating to Jakarta.

The first time was back in 2003—our first expat posting. That time we lived in West Jakarta, near Puri Indah. Our daughter was only 3 at the time; we came to ANZA a few times so I remembered it from then. It is now much easier to get to on the Outer Ring road.

ANZA Bridge Club

I’ve been living in Jakarta for over 6 years now and for the first time, my kids are all in school, and I have some ‘free’ time. By Tricia O'Rourke Image from canva.com When we arrived in Jakarta last November, I immediately joined ANZA because I know how helpful it is to connect straight away. I was hoping to play a game of Mahjong but unfortunately the last group seemed to have fizzled out. So here we are now, looking to re-establish and entice a few more players to join us.

While it certainly is exciting to win, Mahjong at ANZA is very low key and a great reason to get together, play a few games, give the brain a little workout but mostly to have fun and make friends.

Twittering, East Wind, Flower Wall, Winds, Dragons, Pung, Chow, Kong, Fishing, Goulash, MAH-JONG!!! The sound of the tiles clacking and the cries of the players as the tiles are picked and discarded all adds to the experience of playing a game of Mahjong.

Mahjong is a tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th Century. It is commonly played by four players.(Wikipedia) I first learnt to play (the Western version) about 20 years ago when I joined ANZA in Singapore on our first overseas posting. I usually played weekly, both day and some evenings (where a glass of wine often helped). I was so glad to have learnt how to play as I made some great friends and even better, I was able to use my knowledge of the game to join Mahjong groups in our other overseas postings.

Imagine my surprise when we were sent to Switzerland and there was a group of local ladies who played (having been taught by another expat).

Playing with them made settling into Swiss life so much easier.

I played again when we were sent to Malaysia because, of course, they play at ANZA there, and I also played with some “old” Mates from Singapore when we all returned to Sydney from our postings.

It is not a difficult game to learn and your level of skill does not impact the other players so a beginner can be playing against an old hand.

Come and give us a try and I’m sure you will come to enjoy it as much as I do --If you are interested, please signup to our WhatsApp group at ANZA. This way, you are sure there’ll be a game! ( Guest fee applies for non-members.)

Mothers' Day Treat

What is that I hear you say? You don't know what an aglet is? Or a tittle either? Well you should have been at our very educational Mothers' Day Treat. These two pieces of information, which we learnt about, are absolutely vital if you are to succeed as a mother in this highly technological world.

Thirty three gorgeous women in their posh frocks turned up at 11:00 am to the elegant Writers Bar in the grand Raffles Hotel to commemorate our mothers, in an early Mothers Day celebration.

The sparkling wine corks were soon heard popping as conversations grew more animated. After we found our seats in the intimate setting, tiered bird cages with scones, pastries, cakes, eclairs, sandwiches and slices tempted our taste buds.

Then began the Chocolate Monggo Trivia Game...and the sounds of laughter were heard as groups grappled with some unusual questions and then discovered the even more unusual answers. The winning table won Chocolate Monggo

shoes and blocks of chocolate. YUM...LUCKY Because of the generosity of our sponsors, we raised some much needed funds for our Social Welfare programs. We thank: Raffles Hotel, Puri Santi Spa and Vie for Living for our fabulous raffle prizes.

ANZA Social Welfare Playdate at ANZA House with Yayasan Sayap Ibu Children

The aim of the playgroup is to create a fun and caring environment where the kids have free play and enjoy a morning doing different activities with volunteers like myself. We now have a third volunteer, Lynda, who also loves coming in and playing with the children along with Catherine and myself.

After a morning of free play and lots of different activities the children are ready for a delicious lunch prepared fresh in the ANZA House kitchen by our amazing staff Ibu Usni and Ibu Nia. Each week they prepare a different yummy meal for the kids. Their favourite lunch so far has been the amazing spaghetti bolognaise, where the kids went back for seconds!

Unfortunately my time in Jakarta has almost come to an end, which means the playgroup will need more volunteers who are willing to spend a Tuesday morning with these gorgeous children. Please come along and spend some time with them. Believe me, you’ll want to come back again and again when you see their smiling faces, and just how much joy you can bring to their little souls.

For the past year, the highlight of my week has been going into Yayasan Sayap Ibu (a small orphanage in South Jakarta), picking up a small group of children along with a carer and taking them to ANZA House for a morning full of fun and games.

Dressed in their matching t-shirts, the children are always ready for us, greeting myself and Catherine with big smiles and hugs every Tuesday morning. Catherine often pops in much earlier to have some extra cuddle time with the babies and to chat with the older kids and staff. It has been so lovely to see the babies grow a little more each week.

When I first began to volunteer, we had 5 regular children that were part of the playgroup. I am happy to say that there are now 4, as the youngest child was adopted a few months ago. We miss her gorgeous smile, but we’re happy that she is now in a loving home.

The children love chatting in the car on the way to ANZA House, and are always looking out for different attractions and the Ondel Ondel painting on Antasari. I must say these chats have improved my Bahasa skills. The children teach me new Bahasa words every week!

Once we get to the house, the kids get a warm welcome from the security, Pak Eko and whoever else is on duty at the front desk. Then they run for the playroom and start playing with their favourite toys.

Yayasan Kasih Globalindo

HIV and STIs (sexually transmitted infections) are difficult topics in Indonesia as they are frequently associated with morality. As a result, those at risk shy away from seeking advice or treatment for fear of judgment. It is estimated that only 1 in 10 Indonesians know that they are HIV+. This rate is very low and a cause for public health concern.

Klinik Globalindo provides free of charge HIV and STIs testing in a nondescript medical clinic facility. It is a full service clinic equipped with a testing lab, full time doctors, consultant specialists and therapists.

While operations in this new clinic in Setiabudi, South Jakarta started in 2018, the initiative is a spin-off from Ruang Carlo at St Carolus Hospital in Central Jakarta which has been running an HIV program since 2010.

Upon positive diagnosis, anti retroviral medication can be obtained through public hospitals, and ongoing monitoring is critical to ensure the effectiveness of treatment.

ANZA supported this clinic during its opening by sponsoring a microlite centrifuge for HIV viral load testing.

This equipment facilitates same day results for testing. We continue to support the clinic operations together with other local and international sponsors. yayasankasihglobalindo.org

In Memoriam of Ibu Noviarti

The gift of an education for underprivileged children

It is with great sadness that we report the passing on 29 April of Ibu Noviarti (Alm), the school administrator at Esti Bakti, who died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her husband and children.

Together with her husband Pak Yanto (Suryanto), she has been the cornerstone of the school, seeing many students come and go over the past thirty plus years, and devoting her life to serving the community. Her loss will be severely felt by many. Louise and Santi from the Student Sponsorship Program visited Pak Yanto, her children and grandchildren, to give condolences on behalf of everyone at ANZA.

When it comes to travel, I believe that you need a plan—you don’t have to follow the plan, but you need to have one.

Living in Indonesia, my plans frequently crumble as a rainstorm triples my commute or my destination has closed or moved with no explanation. Adaptability and flexibility are keys to happiness most places, but especially here.

As I am soon-to-leave Indonesia, I absolutely HAD to find a way to make it to Komodo before I left. I had a little extra time at the end of my kids’ Spring Break and I thought, why not, I’ll just a book a few days there and leave my toddler at home with daddy. I must admit that I did NOT plan the trip very well.

But I DID plan it.

First I thought I’d use my neighbor’s boat company. She had recently finished a beautiful vacation.

However, when I inquired to this company, they quoted me IDR 120 million for 3 days, 2 nights for myself and 2 children! This was a nonstarter. So I looked into other companies online. I found a few reputable tour companies (according to Trip Advisor) and blasted out my inquiries. The one who was most responsive and offered a decent price, I booked.

Next I needed flights. Flights are usually not so difficult to book in my experience thus far, however, it was Easter weekend and many of the flights appeared to be booked or canceled. I needed to leave a day earlier for airfare purposes and my boat vendor told me it would be no problem… There was no Garuda flight available TO Labuan Bajo so I ended up

booking what I thought to be Batik and Wings Air, which were really Lion Air. Because you cannot pay online for these tickets without an Indonesian bank account, I had to go inperson to a travel agency to book the seats. (Incidentally, the agency was closed on my first attempt despite assurances they were open by the website and phone message, and I had to return hours later.) I’ve never been as terrified as I was on our turbo prop between Kupang and Labuan Bajo, but we made it. I literally prayed four times on our 1 hour flight. I had so much difficulty booking these flights, perhaps it had been a sign from God that I was ignoring.

I asked my tour vendor for hotel recommendations—his first suggestion was booked out and his second suggestion was called “Sunset Hill” and I accidentally booked “Sunset Hostel.” Arriving with my two kids at the youth hostel following a week of luxury in Nusa Dua was a little bit funny.

The place was charming and reminded me of guest houses of my traveling youth.

I was glad that my kids could see that there are different ways to travel.

Soon after our arrival, my boat vendor arrived and told me that my trip would not work because of my flight timing and that we needed to instead take day trips on a fast boat.

The fast boat he showed me was tiny with little shade. I was horrified. How could he change my plan like this? My PLAN? He claimed that the deal he was offering me was a good one because the fast boats cost more than the slow boats. But I wanted the table and chairs, and shade more than a quick trip… Working with my youth hostel host, I was able to find

a group day trip the next day on a very nice large speed yacht with ample shade. The trip included six destinations.

That night, we went out to the fish market for dinner. First we stopped at a pizza place to grab food for my daughter who was not impressed with selecting a live fish or lobster and roasting it on the fire. Across the street from the pizza place, I popped into a travel agency and booked a boat for our second day for a morning snorkel with time to get back and shower before our flight The next day we went out to our boat for the group day trip. We hiked Padar Island, which was beautiful. We snorkeled at the pink beach. We snorkeled at an amazing tiny white sand bar. We snorkeled with the manta rays. We saw the Komodo dragons. We snorkeled at Kanawa. Each site was magical in its own way. It was a truly fantastic, accidental day.

We were quite tired that night so we skipped the fish market and went back to the gorgeous Italian restaurant for dinner. We slept well and went out again in the morning.

We took a very creaky boat to an island called Sabolan.

I snorkeled with the kids for an hour before my son was stung by a jellyfish. The island had only a very small beach club resort called Le Pirate so we went up to the restaurant to seek some vinegar. We paid entry, which included very delicious and healthy welcome drinks. So we ordered lunch. It was absolute paradise. I actually worried that maybe I had died on that Lion Air flight after all, and I was in heaven.

As it turned out, it was quite nice to be in Flores during the evening instead of the live-aboard boats. It gave the kids a little bit more freedom to do what they wanted and eat as they preferred. I appreciated seeing a little more local culture than just being cooped up on the boat. I was probably less sea sick on the large speed boat than a live aboard (I love boats and water far more than does my stomach). The trip that we had in the end was a fraction of the cost of what I had planned. The places we saw were spectacular. I also had the experience of traveling with my kids, having everything go wrong, but be OK in the end. It turns out that winging it with kids is still possible.

And that living in the moment can offer some pretty great moments.

Roemah Djawa A tour through Indonesian History

Hidden behind a nondescript metal gate in an unassuming South Jakarta street is an extraordinary collection of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

Roemah Djawa is the home and private museum of Leksmono (Leks) and Linda Santoso, which they open for organised tours. A group of ANZA members and friends paid a visit in April for this “must-do” Jakarta experience.

By Emmaleen Murray- ANZA Past Officer Beyond the metal gate guests walk into a hidden courtyard garden with lush greenery and a soothing water feature, fairly typical of large Jakarta properties.

However, the eclectic assortment of statues, lanterns and antique furniture are a glimpse of the treasure trove which lies within.

Roemah Djawa consists of five Joglo*, combined to create a unique multi-leveled property that is a remarkable tribute to Indonesian architecture. Understandably, the unique property has been featured in several international publications, including Architectural Digest.

Every space throughout Roemah Djawa showcases a different collection of artefacts and with Leks as our personal guide, sharing his extensive knowledge, we were led on a historical journey across the archipelago, Asia and the Middle East.

I found all the textile collections particularly fascinating and gained a deeper understanding of their significance in depicting the history of a region and individual families.

For example, Leks showed us a number of fabrics that were made for noble families from different locations. Each used their own combinations of colours and patterns that were specific to their families. If a piece was made for a particular

occasion or ceremony, then it may have to be destroyed afterwards so that others could not misrepresent the family.

As Leks mentioned “People know who you are when wearing your batik”.

Interspersed between the valuable artefacts are family momentos reminding us that this is not just a museum but a family residence. For instance, one guest room is decorated with Chinese antiques and features a bathroom wall of porcelain bowls. The Santosos regularly entertain in a dining room with impressive gamelan and wayang collections and our group were treated to refreshments in another dining room surrounded by Asmat art.

Leks and Linda have dedicated more than two decades to preserving Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage and we hope that Indonesians and international visitors alike will be able to appreciate their legacy for years to come.

How To Stay Fit These Holidays

Regardless if you travel for work or pleasure, staying fit can be quite a challenge when you are away from your regular routine and especially if there are kids in tow. But it doesn’t need to be. It can be as easy as getting 30 minutes a day of movement to stay on track with your fitness and keep your body and mind energised. So here are my top 10 tips for staying on track with your fitness these holidays regardless of what level of fitness you have:

Scope out your accommodation options before you book - does it have a gym onsite, are there any interesting classes or studios nearby you can try.

Take some lightweight, easy to pack equipment with you – skipping rope, resistance bands, resistance loops as well as a tennis ball (which comes in handy when you get knots and need to roll them out or apply some myofascial pressure). And extra bonus, the kids love to throw it around too.

Download a free fitness app on your mobile you can do with no equipment like ‘Freeletics’ or ‘The 7 Minute Workout’, especially if you are used to body weight movements. Or try my go to ‘FULL BODY CIRCUIT’ which can be adjusted for all fitness levels. Make sure you don’t try too many new moves without proper instruction. Video cuing is best. If it feels weird, just skip it. You’ve got a holiday to enjoy. This is no time for rehabilitating. And if you are training for something in particular or have started a new healthy living lifestyle, don’t let yourself slide too much just because you are on ‘holidays’. Fitness should always be a part of your daily life. So stick to your goals and get your training in. The benefits of being on holiday is that you more time for you. So use it.

Plan some activity days – especially if you have kids – fun parks, excursions, sightseeing. Sounds like fun.

Make walking and being active part of your holiday plans.

Pack your workout gear – this is a given. At least 2 sets for the climate you will be in. And runners of course.

Get walking – move your body each day. Get out and enjoy the country you are in.

Eat well – food influences your mood. So, whilst you are on holidays, try the local foods, enjoy the new tastes, but still focus on eating whole foods and getting enough protein, carbs and fats in your diet. Add a salad or veggies on the side with at least one meal and keep the dressing on the side.

Stay hydrated – your body is up to 80% water and you need to stay hydrated to feel your best. If you drink alcohol or caffeine products, make sure to drink one glass of water for each caffeinated or alcohol drink you have consumed. Helps to stay on top of your hydration.

9.

Relax and get at least 8 hours sleep – holidays

are a great time to work with your circadian rhythm. Get up when the sun shines, get moving throughout the day and get to bed early. Yes, kids might make this a little more challenging, but use this time to get enough restful sleep and relaxation.

10.

Lastly – try your best. Try to fit in at least 30 minutes of movement each day. Eat as healthy as possible, enjoy your time and make memories. That’s what counts the most. Not whether you come back home with abs. That’s what ANZA bootcamp is for…so feel free to join us every Monday and Thursday for a fun filled session when you are back. It’s abs- o-lutely the best way to keep up your fitness.

Leaving Indonesia

by Monica Smith - ANZA Berita Editor image from canva.com The trip that almost all of us at ANZA will take is the trip where we finally leave Indonesia. Some of us go back home.

Some of us go off on an entirely new adventure all together.

In my case, I am heading back to the U.S. Jakarta offers a very comfortable expat life. We have a tremendous community built on the legacy efforts of generations of trailing spouses. I can spend as much or as little time with my children as I like. I have access to western foods, many international foods, and of course, the shopping can be brilliant.

1.

Make sure you do what you want to do here. If you want to make an impact with social welfare or contribute to the expat community - there are lots of opportunities.

2. Order furniture and get it early. It needs time to rest before it can endure transport.

3. Go to all the bazaars and big craft fairs and buy things.

4. Make sure you visit your very top priority places to see in the country or region.

When asked about my life here, I often say if you can get past the fact that you can’t breathe the air, drink the water, or go anywhere without significant trouble, it’s actually a pretty nice place. As an embassy site, it is considered a “hardship” post meaning that you make a little extra money for your trouble in living here. Everyone here knows that among all of the hard places to live, Jakarta is probably at the very top.

I have joked that I’d like to make a t-shirt that says, “Jakarta: Almost Perfect.” Because it is. Almost.

So as I prepare for the final trip, I thought I’d offer a few suggestions based on both my successes and failures.

5. Take lots of photos. Of regular life and your friends.

6. Make sure you know how to find these amazing people via email or facebook.

7. If you have fitness goals or personal skills that you want to learn, get on that. Don’t delay.

8. Enjoy this place and make some good use of time in traffic!

Rainy Day Reads

Kids Book Review

It’s rainy season here in Indonesia. As a mother of two this has many repercussions for our family, as the rain usually occurs in the afternoon and stops our outdoor afternoon playtime. As most parents know, being able to get your child off to the park is a welcome respite before beginning the long journey to dinner and bed. When the rain comes and the park is not an option, we don’t head to the shopping malls to play, rather we head to the bookcase to find some thrilling tales that will help us through the long afternoon hours.

Numerous studies have shown that reading plays a vital role in childhood development. The recent article presented in the New York Times, “Reading Aloud to Young Children has Benefits for Behavior and Attention” explains how a study examined children 0-5 years old with parents who spent just five minutes reading to their child compared to parents who did not. The researchers finding suggest that engaging in regular reading extended the attention span and lowered behavior issues of the first group, allowing them to function at a higher level when entering school.

There are many such articles telling us of the importance of books and reading to our children, but the overall consensus of all the studies is that, regardless of the amount of time, just reading with your child will have positive affects for both them and you. Therefore, I am giving you a few of our favorite rain-themed books to check out as the wet season continues.

One of our favorite books is Rain,

by Sam Usher. This book has a lot of waiting in it, an emotion my children can empathize with on rainy days. The little boy wakes up to find it is raining and wants to go outside. However, grandfather tells him to wait. And wait. And wait.

A beautifully illustrated stormy day treat is Blue on Blue, written

by Dianne White. Following nature’s patterns, a lovely clear day changes quickly with a breeze blowing in. Expressive rhyming text allows the reader to travel through the day celebrating nature’s changes.

Another book entitled Rain, this one by Manya Stojic, has quickly become a favorite. This story brings our five senses to the African savanna and the arrival of rain to the parched desert.

Porcupine, zebra, baboons, rhinoceros and lion use their specific sense to welcome the rain. Fantastically colored illustrations and animals we love, I think this book will be enjoyed by children of all ages.

Finally, when those days of rain just don’t seem to end, and you need the kids just to do something besides bug you, consider pulling out It’s Raining!

It’s Pouring! by Polly Peters.

Imaginative play is celebrated when a rainy day prevents three children from spending time outdoors. With some handy home materials (think boxes, blankets and string) the kids create their own world in order to find a treasure where while exploring the sea, trudging through the jungle and climbing mountains. This is a great book for jumping into creative play and celebrating the wonders of a child’s imagination.

Reading is such a fun activity, but with these books I am sure you will be able to bring the rainy season of Indonesia inside with little mess and a lot of joy.

It is possible to go to some of the most remote places in the world in a week-long journey. That said, the places I describe below are not far off-the-beaten travel path.

The Borobudur Temple in Yogyakarta is the largest buddhist temple in the world. Its vast collections of stupas are made of grey stone, which at sunrise, reflect the tones of the sunrise, glowing—a view changing every moment as the sun begins to climb.

Sunrise is probably the busiest time at the temple, but everyone is fairly quiet and the experience is still quite respectful and solemn. If you can make it for Vesak Day, you can watch the largest buddhist ceremony in Indonesia.
