Welcome producers and exhibitors to our second annual Canada’s Fruit & Veg Tech X-Change. We trust that you will find this a rewarding experience.

The agricultural industry is a culture much like a family unit who understands and appreciates the internal conflicts that each family undergoes. This year, Mother Nature has not been kind to the tender fruit growers. The adversities of weather is a common thread amongst us and probably the first introduction to any conversation.

We are offering a complimentary brunch on opening day of the X-Change, and as you gather at the breakfast table, it will be the first place that you exchange ideas, support each other and enjoy the synergy of your industry.

This is an exciting time where the consumer is becoming educated, and wants to understand the chain of production that goes into the food that their family consumes.

If you need anything, look for any of our staff wearing neon green shirts and they will be pleased to help you.

Thank you to all of our supporters, sponsors, partners and exhibitors.

MessaGe fRoM THe feDeRal MInIsTeR of aGRICUlTURe, GeRRy RITz

I’m delighted to extend greetings on behalf of The Prime Minister and the Government of Canada to everyone participating in the 2012 Fruit & Veg Tech X-Change show.

This exciting three-day event for both producers and consumers alike showcases the many new technologies and sustainable farming practices in agriculture today.

World-wide, consumers recognize Canada’s top-quality fruits and vegetables, and our Government is committed to ensuring that future generations of farmers are poised to compete in the global marketplace. Along with other key investments in horticulture, we recently launched the new $50 million Agriculture Innovation Program to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture sector and help capture opportunities in domestic and global markets.

We understand that an innovative and protable future for Canadian farmers and processors means a stronger economy and brighter future for all Canadians. That is why we continue to support Canadian growers and the entire horticulture sector.

I encourage you to visit the many exhibits here at the show and to enjoy the great local produce for sale at the farmers’ market.

Once again, welcome and enjoy the show!

a MessaGe fRoM THe pRoVInCIal MInIsTeR of aGRICUlTURe,

On behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Aairs, I am pleased to welcome you to Canada’s Fruit & Veg Tech X-Change, the largest horticulture trade show.

This event is a great opportunity to see the diversity of Ontario’s edible horticulture products, and to see the latest in technology and equipment. It is also an excellent forum for sharing information and expertise, and to help business connect with each other. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ontario’s dedicated growers. I appreciate your commitment to Ontario’s agri-food industry and to making this province stronger.

We all know how important it is to support local growers and bring more of the good things you grow to Ontario tables. Our government is pleased to support buying local, and we’ve made signicant investments in support of local food. When we buy local, everyone wins, especially our farmers, businesses and the local economy.

I trust you will enjoy the Fruit and Veg Tech X-Change and wish you all the best for the future.

Kindest regards,

Canada’s Fruit & Veg Tech X-Change is proud to announce the official launch of the robot farmers “Prospero” and “Aquarius”.

Invented by an Iowa-based engineer David Dorhout, from Dorhout R&D; he describes Prospero as a spider-like robot, specifically designed for row crop application; having the ability to plant, tend and harvest crops.

“Prospero is the working prototype of an Autonomous Micro Planter (AMP) that uses a combination of swarm and game theory. It is meant to be deployed as a group or swarm” says Dorhout. “Prospero will eventually have the ability to plant, tend and harvest –autonomously transitioning from one phase to another”.

The “Aquarius” robot is designed to aid greenhouse operators with dispensing water and other nutrients to plants. Astonishingly enough, this robot will be ready for pre-order at our event.

“Greenhouse growers are concerned more than ever with increasing labour costs and precision tending of their greenhouse crops. These growers are motivated to attend with their families, specifically for irrigation field days and the greenhouse farmer robot launch” states Jillian McCallum, from Essex County Growers Association. Greenhouse operations have significant impact in the horticulture sector; they are serious about technology and educating the next generation”.

Live demonstrations are on-going, for all three days. The Robot farmer exhibit is adjacent to the TD Hospitality Building!
