01 Revitalizing Central Market

Studio name: Pre-Construction Stage of Adaptive Reuse Projects

Studio lead: Wai, Rosman C.C.

Completed in Year 2, HKU. Group Project. Collaborated with Li Yueshan & Lee Kwan Yeung. Author contributed to the design concept, site analysis and first floor design which account for 35% of total. All images shown are author-generated unless otherwise specified.

Someone uses “The Greatest Form Has No Shape” (大象無形) from Lao Zi to describe the architectural design of Central Market. “The Greatest Form” (大 象) refers to good design. “No Shape” (無形) can be explained as ordinary. In other words, a good architectural design does not necessarily have to be presented in a fancy manner. It is difficult for ordinary people to be aware of the existence of ‘design’ when they walk past the Central Market every day. In the past, the Central Market was definitely a large building, and even now, the volume of the Central Market is still comparable to that of a modern shopping mall. We hope that the revitalised Central Market can cater for the leisure and entertainment needs of all walks of life in this community. In Central, where everything is driving at high speed, it is absolutely worthwhile to have a place where people can rest and relax. Central Market is capable of satisfying the need for leisure and entertainment for people after an exhausting day of work. If it is carefully planned and designed internally, people from all walks of life are empowered to find a sense of belonging in different time zones of the building. Then the warmest heart is being found in the greatest form.

Second floor has the largest pedestrian flow due to its connection with the mid-level elevator

02 Rejuvenating Loxley Valley

Studios name: The Changing Landscape & The Dynamic Landscape Studio lead: Paul Brindley (p.brindley@sheffield.ac.uk) & Nayla Al Akl Completed in Year 3, University of Sheffield. Individual Project.

Loxley Valley is located to the northwest of Sheffield city centre. The river flowing through the valley shapes the area to be one of the most vibrant industrial locations in the region in the eighteenth century. This project in the form of report is about the Landscape Characterisation of the studied area, Loxley Valley. Landscape characterisation is a process of identifying unique and distinctive landscape elements, such as the field pattern within a specified area. It is essential because it has been strongly recognized that the uniqueness of places, regions and even countries lies in their landscape characteristics (Selman, 2006).

The first part of the report aims at providing a comprehensive character area description of the entire studied area in terms of 9 aspects. In other words, the report will describe Loxley Valley in 9 layers, while exploring the interrelationship between each of them. Methodology includes desktop study and fieldwork. Some of the maps displayed are produced by Geographic Information System (GIS).

The second part of the report starts to map out the landscape character types and landscape character areas of Loxley Valley. These types and areas have distinctive characteristics that separate them from others. They are identified according to the 9 factors examined in Part One.

The third part is to design Loxley River Woodland Corridor to rejuvenate the area and attract more people to use the site.

Landscape character types are “distinct types of landscape that are relatively homogeneous in character” (Swanwick et al., 2002, p. 9). They are generic and share similar but consistent character in the aspect of geology, landform, field pattern, historical land use, etc (Ibid). One single character type may appear in different parts of the UK.

Landscape character areas are unique areas which “have their own individual character and identity”. Although they may share same generic landscape characteristics with other areas, each character area differentiates themselves by making them place-specific.Thus, the name of a particular place, such as Bradfield, will be added to the name of a landscape character area
