Woodcarving Individual Project Location: Hong Kong Year: 2023 Type: Carving in the round: African tribal mask “Baule” Dimensions: 20cm*15cm*5cm Tools and Materials: Basswood, woodcut knife, woodcarving mallet, sandpaper...

This woodcarving work is developed in 10 weeks under the guidance of woodcarving teacher. It is an African tribal mask, traditionally known as a “kple kple” mask worn by Baule people at Goli rituals and harvest festivals. The circular face represent the life-giving power of the sun.

My work has gone through adaptation and thus differed from the conventional one with rectangular mouth.

Steps of making the baule mask: 1. Making the knead prototype using oil clay 2. Using crosscut saw to cut the general shape 3. Using the woodcut knife to do the carving in the round

Mount making Group Project - Collaborated with senior conservator Gao Fei and Lv Tuanjie Location: Hong Kong Palace Museum Year: 2023 Type: Mount making for the triangular gilt-silver plaque Dimensions: 22.5cm*22cm*3.8cm Materials: Ethafoam 900, Création Baumann fabric (UNISONO IV 0083), polyester fibre fill, museum mounting board

Worked as a museum trainee at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, I had a chance of making the mount for the artefact, a gilt-silver plague decorated with floral motif. The conservationn treatment of reconnecting the openwork joints of the artefact was done by the previous conservator. The last step of the treatment is to make a fibre-filled mount for it to ensure its safety during the future handling, transit and exhibition.

Figure f to g illustrate the making of small ethaform blocks to provide support for convex area of the plague. Figure h to l demonstrates how support-padding and wrapping was done.

Site Analysis Located in the campus of The University of Hong Kong, the target building is close to the exit of MTR station, the university campus, and the student dormitories of the university. The hair salon proposed provides convenience to both the students and community residents.
