rolling around in the foulest locations he could find. Most days however, he could be found at home, curled up nearby, while always keeping me in sight. As I write this, it’s hard to imagine never finding him tucked away in the blanket next to me again. While I have been preparing for this day for over a year, what I discovered while walking into the emergency vet, is that I was in no way prepared. Simon was diagnosed with advanced heart failure and had been under the wonderful care of Dr. Hassinger at Wolf Rock Animal Health Center but last week with the discovery of a severe trachea collapse, the decision had to be quickly made to say goodbye. While is was clear that he was suffering, I feel incredibly lucky that the vet and techs at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists were able to make him comfortable enough for me to take him on one last outing that afternoon. We sat by the water in East Greenwich, I told him I was sorry and how much I loved him and after my last stop to watch him enjoy some steak tips, chicken and pizza (yes these are some of his favorite things), we went back to the vet and said our final good-byes. I will miss my sweet little fluffer-nugget more than I can describe and my life will not be the same without him. I've dedicated this issue's cover to my littlest assistant editor-in-fur and have shared a few of my favorite photos in the memorial section on page 24. RIP Simon. Thank you, Stephanie Georgia editor

Did You Know? • Did you know that a cat’s collarbone is not connected to any other bones, which makes it possible for cats to squeeze into tight spaces? A cat will also use its whiskers to gauge whether it can fit through an opening. • Did you know that dogs have a sense of smell that is 1,000 times better than a human’s? This is because they have more than 220 million scent receptors, compared to humans, who only have 5 million.
• Did you know that the longest dog jump ever recorded was a 30 foot leap made by a greyhound in England? • Do you know how to tell if your pet is dehydrated? Look at her gums. If they seems paler than normal, push your finger on it. If the color comes back immediately after you do this, your pet is fine. However, if it takes a few seconds for the color to return, this is an indicator that she is dehydrated.

A new study from Northwestern University has found some of the clearest evidence yet that animals can judge time. By examining the brain's medial entorhinal cortex, the researchers discovered a previously unknown set of neurons that turn on like a clock when an animal is waiting. "Does your dog know that it took you twice as long to get its food as it took yesterday? There wasn't a good answer for that before," said Daniel Dombeck, who led the study. "This is one of the most convincing experiments to show that animals really do have an explicit representation of time in their brains when they are challenged to measure a time interval."
Great News: New Law Allows Pets to be Buried Next to Their Human Owners in Cemeteries
When planning the study, Dombeck's team focused on the medial entorhinal cortex, an area located in the brain's temporal lobe that is associated with memory and navigation. Because that part of the brain encodes spatial information in episodic memories, Dombeck hypothesized that the area could also be responsible for encoding time.

These dogs are not judged on their breed, but rather their personality. Dogs do not have to be purebred to compete, and mutts are our favorites. The only requirement is that the dogs all be rescues. This dog show will be showcasing the dogs’ best traits out of 10 categories. Rebecca Romijn and Rich Eisen are the hosts, and the program features some celebrities as the judges.

It’s tempting to surprise someone, especially children, with a fluffy puppy, bunny, hamster, or kitty complete with a bow. While you’re imagining the squeals of delight, consider how tragic the situation could become. Imagine if the time, money, and energy commitment you imposed on the family grows to more than they can manage. A poor match could mean the animal ends up in a shelter, feels lonely, or even suffers abuse or neglect.
Think twice before getting a pet as a gift. Certainly as a gift, a pet is “free” but there will be ongoing costs throughout the animal’s life including food, bedding and toys, veterinary care, grooming expenses, and a big investment of time to exercise, play with, and train the animal. Anything less than a lifetime commitment is a betrayal of trust that pets deserve when we bring them home. This is not a commitment that you should make for someone else, no matter how good your intentions are. Every pet needs–and deserves–plenty of time and attention as they adjust to their new FOREVER home. Most of us are especially busy during the holiday season with shopping and family meals, decorating the house and trimming the tree, hosting parties and overnight guests. We’re on the move more, visiting family and friends or attending seasonal festivities. It’s a busy and sometimes stressful season, and likely not the best time to adjust to and care for a new animal. 21 Consider the holiday environment and how difficult it could be for a new puppy to adjust to the frantic activity and the additional hazards–lights, plants, and decorations–in the home. In most areas of the country, winter days are short and cold, but a puppy that requires house training will need to be taken outside often, even in the middle of the night, even when it’s cold or raining or snowing. This can be uncomfortable for both the dog and the caretaker.

Some people will cope better with a puppy while others may prefer an older dog. People should select a pet only after considering important factors like size, activity level, and temperament. The right match between humans and their animal companion is very personal, and because of the commitment involved, an important part of the process is for the owner to fully understand and be prepared for the responsibility. It’s a sad reality that, at holiday times like Christmas and Easter, puppy mills and backyard breeders make a profit from selling pets that are often unhealthy or have likely been neglected since they were born and bred in inhumane environments. The ASPCA urges shoppers to fight this cruelty by refusing to shop for animals from these types of businesses.

Jett R.I. P.
I met my soulmate, soon to be my husband, Gary late in life. I was blessed to meet his long-time furry sidekick, Jett. Although a staunch cat person, I bonded immediately with this amazing, enthusiastic, friendly, furry, theatrical, lovable Jack Russell. As we embarked on our cross country adventure, Jett braved the tornadoes of the Midwest, enjoyed the rugged terrain of the Dakotas, remained happy despite the rain laden clouds of Seattle, ran the rolling hills of Napa Valley, experienced the cool desert air of the Grand Canyon, licked his chops feasting on big texan steaks and remained undaunted by the hurricanes that plagued the gulf coast of Florida. A few years later our exploits ended and we returned to RI for Jett to enjoy his favorite things: the Ocean State’s beaches, Newport Creamery ice cream, and Iggy’s doughboys and clam cakes. Jett passed in Gary’s arms. He was 17. Our bundle of joy is now in a place where there’s cheeseburgers, lasagna, blueberries, and apples as far as his loving eyes can see. Until we get to hold you and hug you at Rainbow Bridge....we miss you and we love you, little buddy.

We’d like to remember our recently passed dog Bo. He was brought into our lives in 2010 and was the missing piece of our puzzle from day one. He was a rescue from the Cranston Shelter and found his forever home with us in Johnston, where he lived until he passed. Bo was a larger than life personality and as you can tell from the picture a very handsome boy. Over the years Bo
found friends everywhere he went, whether it was to the park, family homes or around the apartment complex where we lived most of his life. He had a strong will, but unfortunately succumbed to cancer after a recurrence of melanoma. He is remembered by his family, Daria and Mike and his friends near and far who will always remember him for the happy, playful and lovable pup that he was.
