What is SOS reTAIL?
SOS reTAIL is a local pet supply store in Wakefield, RI, owned by Save One Soul Animal Rescue League; a non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk animals find and thrive in loving forever homes. Additionally, 100% of store profits go to helping homeless animals get a second chance at a wonderful life. Profits from SOS reTail also help us to further build the rescue's lifesaving programs, including a spay/neuter program in the south.
How did it all begin?
It all began over ten years ago with Layla Bean, my second rescue dog. My husband and I lost her much too early and we started fostering rescue dogs in her memory. Animal rescue is a rabbit hole and fostering lead to event planning, which lead to transport coordination and partnership building, which lead to a deep understanding of the logistics of and need behind animal rescue. I realized that I could do more for this cause with my time and energy than by donating any amount of money I could ever make... and I enjoyed it! Since our founding in 2014, we have grown our rescue community with volunteers, adopters, and supporters alike to include individuals who generously give their time, special skills, and energy to our cause. The previous store owner, a former SOSARL board member, presented us the opportunity to open a retail space as a small income center which could also double as home base for the rescue. From there like so many things in rescue the stars aligned to make SOS reTAIL a reality. We are where we are today because of the many individuals who I am so proud and humbled to call teammates. We firmly believe that if we work hard and smart enough together, we can tackle the challenge of pet homelessness...and the extended community that SOS reTAIL is helping us build is just one more ingredient in that life-saving recipe.
Are you a volunteer-driven retail store, similar to the rescue?
We have paid sales associates who are regularly supported by volunteers with inventory, stocking, and cleaning activities. We are presently looking to hire a full time manager to dedicate the time and energy the store deserves to take it to the next level - both in terms of retail activities and community programming. This could be a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about animal welfare and interested in sales, event planning and business management.

What has been the most challenging part of running a retail store/rescue together?
Time management! In rescue, there is always more to do and it seems the same is true for retail! In our organization, we are committed to focusing not just on the animals, but also on people. We strive to provide not just our dogs, but our adopters, volunteers and supporters with a high quality, meaningful and kind experience. We are committed to this philosophy in everything that we do as an organization, including the retail operation, which means that our standards for ourselves are high and we have our work cut out for us!
What kinds of products and services do you offer?
We offer high quality dog and cat foods, treats, toys, and other basic supplies, basic and advanced dog training classes as well as private sessions, free animal-related educational workshops, full service grooming for dogs and cats, and two self-wash stations. We are most proud of our "busy toy" selection, as well as our sales associates' abilities to draw upon their personal experience and knowledge to find the right solution to each customer's needs, considering each customer and animal as the individual they are.
Do you have adoption events at the store?
Yes, once a month on Saturdays we host SOSARL adoption events with anywhere from 15-25 dogs every Wednesday evening during the school year from 6-7:30pm we have a smaller gathering of adoptable dogs and volunteers.
Is there anything else you would like to tell readers about your very special store?
We are so thrilled to finally have a "home base" at SOS reTAIL, and we are very grateful for the warm reception we have received from the community as a whole, as well as the support we continue to be shown. We are excited to see what 2020 will bring, and what we will be able to accomplish for the animals together!
