Locally and around the globe…

Adorable Baby Koala Mistakes Pet Dog For Its Mother An Australian dog is still recovering from a hilarious case of mistaken identity. In October, Tony was out in his yard in Adelaide, South Australia, with his owner Henry when a baby koala leaped onto his back. The bewildered pooch squirmed around to nudge the adorable joey, which was clinging to its fur, off his body. Everytime he thought he had succeeded, the smart koala found a way to clamber back on. The gentle pooch eventually managed to get rid of the koala by rolling on his back, at which point the marsupial scurried back into the trees in search of its real mom. Henry, who caught the entire scene on camera, says the koala, who lives in his backyard, is newly independent of its mother. He speculates it may have mistaken his friendly and tolerant dog for its parent.

New Study Says Cats Form Emotional Attachments to Their Owners Just Like Dogs and Babies

Cats have a reputation for being aloof and independent—but this study of the way domestic cats respond to their caregivers suggests that their socio-cognitive abilities and the depth of their human attachments have been underestimated. The findings reported in the journal Current Biology on September 23rd might be the first to show that, much like children and dogs, pet cats form secure and insecure bonds with their human caretakers. The findings suggest that this bonding ability across species must be explained by traits that aren’t specific to canines, the researchers say.

A baby koala clung onto Tony, mistaking the pet dog for its mother (Credit: Henry/YouTube screen capture)

“Like dogs, cats display social flexibility in regard to their attachments with humans,” said Kristyn Vitale of Oregon State University. “The majority of cats are securely attached to their owner and use them as a source of security in a novel environment.”

Many dog parents already know their pets communicate with them, but what EXACTLY are they trying to say? A speech-language pathologist with an 18-month-old dog is working to find out, and she’s already discovered that her dog Stella can literally tell her things — like she’s tired after playing and now would like a nap, or that instead of playing at this moment she would prefer to eat, and that she would like to go outside, specifically to the park. It’s all possible through the use of an adaptive device Christina Hunger, 26, devised to help Stella communicate not only words but her thoughts and feelings too. When the Catahoula/Blue Heeler mix wants to “talk,” she steps on buttons corresponding with words Hunger recorded and programmed into the device. Hunger, who works in San Diego with 1- and 2-year-old children, many of whom also use adaptive devices that help them communicate, began teaching Stella words when the canine was about 8 weeks old. The 50-pound dog now knows at least 29 words and can combine up to five words to make a phrase or sentence. Check out Stella’s progress at www.hungerforwords.com, and Instagram @hunger4words.

Chester R.I.P.

This guy - a great friend, a stellar three ball fetcher, lover of a good swim and a friendly crouch sniff, slipper delivery pooch, treat hound and shamelessly flatulent at times. We said goodbye tonight.

Charlie

Chester you will be missed. You are our family. – The Petersen's

Charlie’s Paw Prints in my Heart by Melissa Kiefer All the dogs that I have owned, I always knew they were only here on loan. Sometimes they say, you meet one above the rest. They have that something, that makes them more than a guest. Each one of them have had all that I could give So that they had the best lifes to have and live. Then along came that one that broke the mould, from the tip of his tail, to a nose so cold. What it is I really cannot say. He has this light like a golden ray. I suppose people will say he’s still just a dog like all the rest, yet I see a sparkle that makes him quite remarkable. For all the nosework games we played, And oh, so many memories that we made. With every paw print that he laid, He made sure my memories would never fade.

CURB STYLIN’ seen around town

Deirdre & Lily What do you do for a living? Deirdre: I’m a military photographer. Lily: Expert snoozer. There’s nothing better than being sprawled out in my orthopedic bed with my tennis ball and blankie.

If you had a superpower what would it be? Deirdre: My superpower would be telekinesis like Jean Grey, the Phoenix. Lily: My superpower would be to actually catch a squirrel.

What is your greatest fear?

Deirdre: Looking back and feeling like I’ve lived an unfulfilling life. Lily: I do not like thunder, like, at all. It’s AWFUL. I shake and try to squeeze into spaces three times smaller than I am.

“Wagging Trails” • Off-leash running and exercise (supervised) • You’ll come home to a happy, exhausted and well socialized pup! • Leashed walking and jogging available. – FREE warm up to meet dog.

Where is your favorite place? Deirdre: Part of my job entails aerial photography, and my happy place is in the skies above RI. It’s so beautiful from that perspective, especially in the fall. Lily: I love walking around Globe Park in Woonsocket, so much so I

park it and refuse to leave.

Is there anything that embarrassed you? Deirdre: While on a date, I ate edamame with the shell on it. My date kindly explained that I needed to take the shell off...I’ve never made that mistake again. Lily: I swiped 2 lbs of lunch meat off the counter. It gave me explosive diarrhea so badly that I whimpered everytime I had to go to the bathroom.
