gThe 16th Annual Evans Environmental Fair held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, was an overwhelming success with over 20 Community Service Groups and Agencies participating. 145 of the approximate 200 attendees were eligible for 14 door prize drawings throughout the day.
Three major prizes were awarded at the close of business. They were: 3rd Prize Lawn Cart went to Elizabeth Franklin, 2nd Prize Grill/Smoker went to Tim Porsley and 1st Prize a Battery Powered Electric Lawnmower had a slight twist, which took 2 drawings to select the winner. Sara Schraft, the wife of Councilman Michael Schraft, name was drawn. However, they graciously declined and a second name was drawn. The official (and final) winner of the mower was Yvonne Sargento, who was delighted to make a special trip to Evans the next day to claim her prize.
A special THANK YOU to those who supported the Boy Scouts Hot Dog Roast. Only 3 hot dogs were left at the end of the day.
Also, a special THANK YOU to the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company and its staff for the man-hours of support and the use of their facility, a special shout goes out to Ken and Alysia Hontz.

On November 19, 1936, the new Brant #1 School was opened on Brant-North Collins Road. The former school that was located on the Brant-Angola Road, was later sold and used as an apartment building. The Brant #1 School centralized with the Town of Evans in 1950, joining the Lake Shore Central School District. It was a sad day in 2010, when the Brant #1 School closed its doors. In 2011 the new Brant #1 School building was purchased and renovated as the new Brant Town Hall. The portion of the building shown in the 1937 photo, is the area that today houses the town of Brant Police. Pictured in the photo are: First Row (l-r): Leonard Guzzetta, James Brocato, Unknown, Pasquale Gugino, Joseph Catalano, James Mirusso, Joe (Rocky) Gugino, Anthony (Sonny) Catalano, Joe Gugino. Back Row (l-r): Christine (Dolly) Catalano, Lucille Ellis, Christine Catalano, Phyllis Notaro, Sarah Rozumalski, Frances Notaro, Sarah Muffoletto and teacher - Anna Martorana. This was the first teaching job for Anna Martorana who was born and raised in Farnham, N.Y. Once grown, most of the children pictured in this photo, chose to remain in Brant and raise their families here. Their teacher Anna Martorana, became a professor earning the title of Dr. In 1977 she was elected as the Mayor of the Village of Farnham serving in that capacity until 1986. Phyllis Notaro made a name for herself in the sport of bowling, becoming a National, State and City – “Hall of Famer”. She was and is one of our local celebrities! Both Phyllis and her sister Frances Notaro were life-long residents of Brant. Brothers Joe and Anthony (Sonny) Catalano farmed together until well into their adult years. Sonny’s twin sister was Christine (Dolly) Catalano. Both Sonny and his brother Joe were Charter Members of the Brant Volunteer Fire Company. Lenny Guzzetta became owner of Brant Machine on the Brant-Angola Road and was listed as Treasurer of the Brant Volunteer Fire Department in 1956. James Mirusso was a Veteran of WWII and he too was a Charter Member of the Brant Volunteer Fire Department. Quite a few descendants of these students pictured, are today themselves residents of the town of Brant.

The 1909 New Century Atlas of Erie County N.Y. highlights many of the Town of Brant farms and includes a description of the Martin Farms: “MARTIN FARMS ...containing 250 acres, owned by George L. Martin. These farms are located in lots 7, 8 and 9 on the Milestrip Road. Its principal revenues are as follows: 30 acres of raspberries and strawberries, about 18 horses are supported on the place and 150 to 200 tons of hay are cut from its meadows. Wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, beans, peas and tomatoes for the canning factory* and 35 acres of medium timber is a fair representation of a farm ranking among the best farms of the town and county.” [*Erie Preserving Co.] A map of Brant from 1969 shows these same farms as belonging to Ward Martin.
As we can see from this piece of early written history, farmers raised plenty of fruits and vegetables, so in turn, this generated a need for workers to help cultivate and pick the growing crops. Throughout the years, the workers were of all ages and nationalities, however in late 1890’s and early 1900’s workers were primarily of Italian descent. Housing facilities were available on almost all of the local family farms for the laborers. These “farm camps”, consisted of small “shacks”, and were active in Brant up through and including the 1970’s. Many workers would live here from spring to fall. Whole families worked the harvest season until child labor laws eventually forbade children on the farms.
We have heard and read stories regarding farm camp life such as “piling into the trucks the day school ended for the summer to head to the farms in Brant to work the farms and pick vegetables” and living in a “one-room “shack” with cooking and sleeping areas separated by sheets hung over wires spanning the room”. Remembrances also include getting “water in buckets from the community pump” and "using an outhouse”. The machinery and tools used in farming today have greatly changed the requirements of the planting, cultivating and harvesting activities, however, good hardworking farm help is still a necessity of a successful, productive farm.
