The Main Bowling Academy, Main Street, Angola, N.Y.
In 1946, three Notaro brothers, John, Joseph and Frank of Brant, N.Y. purchased the Ford Agency building. This building was located at 77 North Main Street in the village of Angola. It had once been a Ford Dealership and to this day you can still find the “FORD” name embossed in the upper bricked section of the building.
After their purchase, the Notaro brothers installed ten Brunswick bowling lanes, with the business referred to as the “Main Bowling Academy”. It was in this bowling alley, that Pro-Bowler Phyllis Notaro first began learning the sport. You see, her father John was one of the three brothers. The photo for today is actually a postcard depicting four inside views of the “Main Bowling Academy”. The back of the postcard encouraged patronage, describing the accommodations as “Angola’s Leading Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge - Air Conditioned.”
Sometime after the Notaro brothers sold the building and business, the alleys became known as “Old Ford Lanes”. Under this name, Fred Carstens was one of the owners. In fact, it was Fred who loaned us this picture postcard.
The “Ford” building was purchased and remodeled just a few years ago. Today, in 2025, it houses one of the village’s local eating establishments known as Azalia’s Juicery.
Our society is ever so pleased when we find information which highlights the ties between our Evans and Brant communities.

From the Old Photo Album
It was only a little over 80 years ago when people from our community relied on horsepower to help farm their land. In 1942, Cosmo Maley took a break from farming with his horse, to pose with his daughters Rose and Carolyn for a photograph. Cosmo’s father Charles Maley along with Pasquale Lomanto had purchased the farm land on Church Street and Mud Road in Farnham, N.Y. on September 30, 1919. (Mud Road today is known as Commercial Street and Brant-Farnham Road.) The Erie County property deed recorded the previous owners as Pietro and Congetta Villa. Cosmo’s son Charles still resides in the family homestead. Charles’ daughter Sandy Meli submitted this photo of her grandfather and aunts when we were gathering information for Farnham’s 125th Anniversary book in 2017.

Did you know the Brant and Farnham area may have had ties to the Underground Railroad and Abolitionist Movement? Today we share with you some information from our Brant-Farnham Historical booklet published in 2012:
The Underground Railroad and Abolitionist Movement in Brant
and Farnham New York
The year was 1816, when Moses Tucker, a Quaker, settled in Brant. As the first settler, he made his home on the SW corner of Mile Block and Brant North Collins Road. It so happens that many of the early settlers in Brant and Southern Erie County were Quakers who believed that human slavery was wrong both under moral and natural law. Quaker meeting houses were predominant for the earliest years in this area.(12) There was a “Friends of Human Progress” (aka Quaker) meeting house in Brant located in Tucker’s Grove (Moses Tucker), it was called HEMLOCK HALL.(11) It has been documented that “Quakers are part of the underground railroad mythology…the reputation of Quakers for antislavery was well known among the enslaved. No fugitive,…was ever betrayed by a Quaker.” (1)
For 240 years from the first African slave until 1860, slaves ran and escaped to freedom. The transportation of slaves to freedom had to be done under the utmost secret conditions. The transport worked much like a railroad and so it was called the Underground Railroad (UGRR). The entire area of western New York was filled with stops or stations of the UGRR. Rochester was the main station. However, there were many minor but key stops, such as the one run by Dr. James Pettitt near Fredonia NY and his son Eber Pettitt at Versailles Cattaraugus County NY. (2) Versailles is located just outside the Town of Brant. Some local names listed as playing a part of the UGRR are Versailles NY - Hiram (Capt) Chapman and Eber M. Pettitt, Brant NY - “Friend Andrew” (Quaker) (4)
Underground Railroad Possible Stops and Stations
Let’s remember that during this time, roads were dirt, not paved and means of travel were foot, stagecoach or horse and buggy/wagon. There were no streetlights, no electricity. Homes had out-houses and wood stoves. People lived by the rule of early to bed, early to rise. There was a stagecoach line from Gowanda to Buffalo, which ran on the route following the old Versailles “Plank” Rd. This truly was a road covered with planks. Along this route, of which part is in the Town of Brant, was the Field Stand Inn, a rumored UGRR stop (corner of Brant North Collins Road and Versailles Plank Road). Stagecoach drivers would change horses and rest. Versailles Plank Road was a toll road, with the toll being in Pontiac, NY, located just a short distance outside of Brant. Versailles, NY is now a documented UGRR station, listing Eber Pettitt as “Abolitionist”. Freedom seeking “travelers” coming through the Versailles, NY area could have taken the Versailles Plank Road over the Cattaraugus Creek, through Brant and then on towards Pontiac to Angola, to the Lakeshore Road, heading to Buffalo and then freedom in Canada. Or, as the UGRR Route map shows, through Brant to Eden. It is said that the freedom trips would have been broken into stops approximately 15 miles apart, a look at the MAP of UGRR Routes confirms this.
As previously mentioned, the only Brant name that has been found linked to the UGRR was that of “Friend Andrew” (Quaker), Brant?, NY [PE-14,18,94](8) (“Friend” is another name for Quaker.) From various records, it is surmised that this person is “Andrew” Varney, Quaker, (1797-1868) who did live in Brant during the time of the UGRR. He was listed on the 1880 census, as father of James (Brant, NY). We know that James Varney lived on Mileblock Road near Cain Road, not far from the Versailles Plank Road. James was host to Sojourner Truth, a well-known freed slave, during her 1868 visit to WNY and Brant.
Another local TRAVEL route, passing though Brant and Farnham was the POSTAL TRAIL from Fredonia to Buffalo; it crossed over the Cattaragus Creek in Irving passing though Brant at Farnham. A Stagecoach stop along this route was the Belote Home (later Pingitore’s - on Erie Road across from St. Anthony’s Cemetery). There was also, The Buffalo and State Line Railroad, which had a depot stop in Farnham. The map of UGRR Routes shows a route following along the Lake Erie Shore line. Though not confirmed, it is possible that freedom seekers found refuge in the Farnham area, via these routes and modes of travel.
