COMING TOGETHER FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Hello team,

It was great seeing so many team members fundraising for the Alzheimer Society this past month Between our online efforts, individual team members, our home-based walks and our participation in the officials walks in Charlottetown and Moncton, we raised $13, 388. That's outstanding team and a testament to the kind of people we have working at Andrews and ProTem

It was equally inspiring to see how our homes celebrated our nursing teams during National Nurses Week As I said in my last team message, our nursing team members are at the core of our operation There's a quote from former U.S. President Barack Obama taped to the wall of the Andrews of Stratford activity room that reads, " nurses are the beating heart of our medical system " I couldn't agree more

Of course, all our team members are integral to our success as an organization Whether you ' re a nurse, a caregiver, a dietary aide, housekeeper or a program coordinator, what you do every day positively impacts our residents and strengthens our reputation for the better Which is why we launched our backpack program We want our team members to be proud of the work they do even when they re not at work The backpacks have been distributed to existing team members and will be given to new team members going forward I would like to thank Lynda and Amanda for their effort in making this happen

In addition to recognizing the hard work of our teams through extracurricular events, we will continue offering opportunities for growth to team members through existing training and development programs Courses like shift supervisor training, caregiver training and training through Surge, are ways team members can learn new professional skills and grow in their career. This is an area of particular value for us and one we continue to invest in through updated information and technological advancements like our new smart-board screen, that enhances the training experience.

I strongly encourage any team members interested in growing their skills to reach out to their supervisor or Jincy about the training opportunities available

Happy early Father's Day and happy June

Sincerely,

It is Andrews Senior Care's goal to respect the to provide a safe and secure environment; to promote involvement of residents and their family by inviting input and feedback related to the care and services we provide;

'Back on the trails'

E-bike pilot project gives Andrews residents chance to cycle again

Andrews of Stratford resident Phyllis MacDonald first started cycling in her 60s. At the time, she was newly retired and looking for something to fill her days. She joined a cycling group and began spending her weekends traversing the Confederation Trail

Eventually, cycling became a shared pastime with her grandson Zachary The two would bike the entirety of the Confederation Trail in increments, meeting each week where they’d left off previously and moving on from there.

During the peak of her cycling years, Phyllis completed the trail five times.

Since moving into Andrews Senior Care she assumed her trail days were over, instead exercising on one of the home’s stationary bikes three days a week

However, Phyllis is back on the road, thanks to a pilot project between Andrews Senior Care, Cycling without Age and Bike Friendly Communities Prince Edward Island

Through this partnership, Andrews acquired an electric trishaw, a three-wheeled bike that allows seniors and people with mobility issues to experience cycling with the help of a trained pilot The bike includes a large enclosed seat with safety straps where the senior can sit while the pilot handles the peddling and navigation.

“Being a cyclist myself and knowing how much I enjoy the Confederation Trail and cycling around P.E.I., I would be out cycling and thinking ‘how can I get this resident (Phyllis) back on the trails,’” said Andrews of Stratford program coordinator Sharon WoodsBryenton “That was in my mind for years ”

Now, after a more than three-year process, Sharon is finally able to start taking residents out for rides starting this month

“Every resident here has had a bicycle or their family had a bicycle and they all loved to cycle,” Sharon said “As we age, our mobility changes Cycling can be very difficult for a senior to do Getting this trishaw, we can get them out like they’re cycling again They’ll feel the breeze, they’ll see the sights. I think (the benefits) are going to be immeasurable.”

Phyllis, who rode the bike for the first time on May 30, agreed.

“It was grand," she said of the experience "It will be an adventure You don’t get too many adventures at my age ”

While residents are eager to start, pilots are required to undergo considerable training on how to ride the trishaw safely

“Pilots will have inspection sheets to go through every time to make sure the bike is safe before even getting on to ride and they will be taught to ride this properly,” said Sharon “It is an electric bike, so (pilots) will have to learn the different speeds and features (unique to this bike) to keep it safe ”

Currently there are five volunteer pilots, however Sharon expects to see that grow.

“I think the community is going to be really happy to see the seniors out riding,” she said “I think we ’ re going to get more volunteers I think seniors in the community are going to love to see it Eventually I hope we can get more of these trishaws in our community in Stratford, in Charlottetown and more of (Andrews) Community Care and Long-term Care homes It’s a wonderful way to get our seniors back out in the summer Not just for walks or a drive but an actual bike ride again ”

Carrie Gallant has been an Andrews of Parkhill team member for 18 years.

Carrie started working as a caregiver at Parkhill in 2005 In 2011 she became the Care Coordinator for the home, a role she remains in today

Throughout her career she's felt supported, with Andrews providing any training or guidance required for advancement While much of her career at Andrews was under the previous owners, she said the Murphy family's dedication to the team was evident when they first took over Parkhill in 2015

"Jeff (Murphy) was always here when we needed him," she said, adding the administrative team was much smaller then.

Despite Andrews' growth, the feeling of belonging has not changed for Carrie.

"It feel like my home," she said. "And I think that's how our residents feel here."

Which for Carrie, is important.

"I've always had a passion for working with seniors," she said.

MARKING MILESTONES

Every month we will be highlighting team members who've reached significant milestones with us

Darlene Thompson as been an Andrews team member for 25 years.

Darlene started working as a caregiver with Andrews of Charlottetown in 1998 after spending a number of years running a child-care business out of her home

Having grown up in a family of nurses, care work always appealed to Darlene So, when the opportunity presented itself to start a career in the field, she jumped

"I enjoy helping people," she said "My mother worked in nursing care and I can remember going there as a child and enjoying being there When she'd get off work, I'd go up and visit I always enjoyed it "

Throughout her years at Andrews, she's seen a lot of team members pass through the organization While the faces have changed, she said the culture has remained the same

"A lot of people have come and gone, " she said "We all get along When you work with someone for so long, they (become) part of your family You sometimes treat them better than your family "
