In 2022 our circuit, the Andalucía Golf Challenge, which began in Bellavista (Huelva) on 19 February, is celebrating its 12th anniversary. It has been 12 years travelling around the finest golf courses in Andalucía and, for three years, also in Madrid and Segovia – with a third destination, Segovia, joining us this year. The circuit has become a “classic” on the golfing calendar and a benchmark for golf fans throughout Spain, as well as for many foreign residents and visitors who have the opportunity to play at some courses they would normally find more complicated to access if it were not for our tournaments. It is already, unquestionably, one of the premier amateur circuits held in Spain, both for the quality of courses where it is played and for the ultimate prizes. In 2022, 30 legs will be held at top-level courses such as Royal Valderrama, Royal Sotogrande, Royal Sevilla, La Reserva de Sotogrande, Finca Cortesín, Villa Padierna (Flamingos), Aloha, etc. The grand finale is scheduled for the end of September, at the “new” course at La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort. Qualifying directly for the final will be the winners of each category plus the scratch winner from all the events (90 players in total), and they will be joined by at least 10 other players from the Benahavís Ranking. The five final winners – two from each category plus the top scratch player – will travel next October to the Dominican Republic where they will have the opportunity to discover and play at the best courses on the island: Punta Espada (Cap Cana), Teeth of the Dog (Casa de Campo) and Ocean’s 4 (Bahía Príncipe). This will be an exceptional golf and tourism experience for the lucky five who manage to prevail at the outstanding new course that La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links will be inaugurating in June. The statistics in 2021 for this popular amateur circuit (comprising 23 events plus the final) were impressive, and in 2022 they will multiply exponentially: more than 2,500 players representing 20 nationalities, with gifts valued at €50,000, 295,000 hits achieved on social networks and among our digital community, and tens of thousands of readers of our two printed magazine editions... The Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit is now firmly established, and looking forward to an even more promising future.

En 2022 nuestro circuito, Andalucía Golf Challenge, cumple su duodécimo aniversario. Han sido doce años recorriendo los mejores campos de golf de Andalucía y, desde hace tres años, también de Madrid y Segovia. En la edición de 2022 recalaremos por primera vez en Salamanca. Este tour se ha convertido en un “clásico” y un referente para los aficionados al golf de toda España y para muchísimos extranjeros residentes o visitantes que aprovechan para jugar en algunos campos a los que seguramente tendrían complicado el acceso. Jugadores de veinte nacionalidades disputan el circuito y luchan por clasificarse para la final y optar al gran premio de uno de los viajes de golf y turismo al Caribe. Es, sin duda, uno de los mejores y mayores circuitos amateur de cuantos se celebran en España, tanto por la calidad y cantidad de los campos donde se juega como por los premios finales. En 2022 se disputarán más de veinticinco pruebas en recorridos de primerísimo nivel, como el RC Valderrama, RCG Sotogrande, RC Sevilla Golf, La Reserva de Sotogrande, Villa Padierna (Flamingos), Aloha, Marbella Club, Atalaya, Finca Cortesín, etc. De la gran final, para la que se clasifican tres jugadores de cada prueba previa, más otros por ranking, saldrán los cinco ganadores, dos de cada categoría más el scratch, que viajarán a República Dominicana, donde tendrán la oportunidad de jugar y conocer los mejores campos de la isla: Punta Espada (Cap Cana), Dientes de Perro (Casa de Campo) y Ocean´s 4 (Bahía Príncipe). Una experiencia única de golf y turismo. Los números de este circuito amateur en 2021 (en el que se disputaron veintitrés pruebas más la gran final) fueron impresionantes, y en 2022 se multiplicarán, seguro, exponencialmente: más de dos mil jugadores, 50.000 euros en premios y regalos, casi trescientos mil impactos conseguidos en redes sociales y entre nuestra comunidad digital de más de 500.000 jugadores de toda Europa... a los que hay que sumar decenas de miles más de lectores de las dos ediciones de la revista impresa Andalucía Golf/España Golf. Sin duda, el circuito ha alcanzado su madurez y encara un futuro prometedor. Le animamos a participar en esta duodécima edición y conseguir uno de los grandes viajes a República Dominicana.

Terminaba escribiendo en ‘Las cosas del golf’ del pasado número que lo de los petrodólares era otra historia. Pues vamos con ella. El deporte profesional de algunas disciplinas como el golf, el fútbol y el tenis se ha convertido en poderoso imán que atrae el dinero tanto como a los osos un panal de rica miel. Empezaron a arrimarse a las más rutilantes estrellas y competiciones las marcas multinacionales más poderosas del ramo deportivo y luego fueron aportando su maná crematístico otras potentes compañías del más diverso cuño. Últimamente, como se ve que hay dinero a espuertas (no en mi bolsillo, por desgracia), a la gran fiesta patrocinadora se han agregado entidades que no tienen nada que ver directamente con la industria del golf pero que tienen muy claro que invertir en sus estrellas y grandes torneos puede resultar muy rentable. Uno de esas entidades es el Reino de Arabia Saudí, que por medio de su Fondo de Inversión Público (PIF) y la firma LIV Golf Investments (LIVGI) tiene previsto invertir una descomunal cantidad de dinero en la creación de una Superliga Mundial. Este invento, que empezaría a rodar el año que viene, atraería a los mejores jugadores del mundo a cambio de asegurarles unos in-

gresos millonarios. Se habla de trece torneos a 54 hoyos con 20 millones de dólares en premios cada uno más una final con 50 millones en juego. Participarían 48 jugadores, no habría corte y se haría una salida al tiro para que el torneo se desarrollase en cuatro horas, entre las dos y las seis de la tarde (para hacer más animada la retransmimión televisiva). Un gran espectáculo, sin duda, pero no exento de polémica y de intereses cruzados, sobre todo los de los dos grandes circuitos profesionales, el PGA Tour y el ahora rebautizado como DP World Tour (ya sabe, el European Tour). Hay mucho (dinero) en juego y nadie quiere soltar el sabroso hueso que supone contar con las más rutilantes estrellas de este deporte, o sea, los generadores de grandes audiencias televisivas y por ende de enormes ingresos por publicidad. El dinero suele llevar aparejada la discordia, y la revolucionaria Superliga Mundial ya la ha em-

pezado a sembrar entre los potenciales candidatos a participar en ella. Mientras unos cuantos se han mostrado partidarios de enrolarse en la millonaria aventura, otros critican que la iniciativa sufragada con los petrodólares puede incidir negativamente en los grandes circuitos tradicionales y no ser lo mejor para la buena imagen de la competición al más altísimo nivel. Parece que los dirigentes de los citados circuitos no se van a quedar de brazos cruzados y están dispuestos a plantar batalla para evitar perder –aunque sea a tiempo parcial– a sus celebridades y ver devaluados sus torneos. Veremos dónde acaban las hostilidades. Como bien decía Francisco de Quevedo, poderoso caballero es don Dinero, que da y quita el decoro y quebranta cualquier fuero.

Potent Magnet In concluding my “Golf Notes” column last issue, I noted that the petrodollar issue would be another subject for the future. So let’s go with that now. Professional sport in certain disciplines such as golf, football and tennis has become a powerful magnet that attracts money as much as a honeycomb attracts bears. Initially, the most powerful multinational groups in the sports industry became associated with top stars and major competitions, before a diverse array of other powerful companies started to contribute their cash manna. Lately, as is clearly apparent, there is plenty of money being splashed around (albeit not in my pocket, unfortunately), and there are entities that have joined the great sponsorship party without having anything to do directly with the golf industry but with very a clear view that investing in stars and tournaments can be quite profitable. One of these entities is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which through its Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the company LIV Golf Investments (LIVGI) plans to invest a huge amount of money in the creation of a Super Golf League. The aim of this invention, which reportedly would start rolling out next year, is to attract the best players in the world in exchange for guaranteeing them multimillion-dollar incomes. There is talk of 54-hole 20

tournaments (13) with $20 million in prize money each, plus a final with $50 million at stake. Fortyeight players would participate, there would be no cut and there would be a shotgun start so that the tournament could take place over four hours, between two and six in the afternoon (to make its television broadcast more appealing). Unquestionably a great show, but not without controversy and conflicting interests, especially those of the two leading professional circuits, the PGA Tour and the now-renamed DP World Tour (aka the European Tour). There is a lot (of money) at stake and no one wants to drop the tasty bone of having the sport’s most brilliant stars in their camp: that is, the generators of large television audiences and therefore enormous advertising revenue. Money often brings with it discord, and the revolutionary Super Golf League has already begun to sow discordant seeds among potential participants. While a few have been in favour of

enrolling in this highly lucrative adventure, others criticise the fact that an initiative financed with petrodollars can have a negative impact on the major traditional circuits and not be positive for the image of competition at the highest level. It seems that the leaders of the aforementioned circuits are not going to sit idly by, and they are willing to put up a fight to avoid losing – even part-time – their celebrities and seeing their tournaments devalued. We’ll see where hostilities end. ohn Byron Nelson Jr. – his full name – achieved unrivalled results in the history of golf. For example, finishing 65 consecutive times in the top-10, which happened from 1942 to 1946. Born on 4 February 1912 in Dallas, the Texan collected 54 career victories, including five Grand Slam titles (1937 and 1942 US Masters; 1939 US Open; and 1940 and 1945 US PGA Championship). Outside that record of top-10 finishes, “Lord Byron” (one of his more wellknown nicknames) finished worse than 10th on only one occasion, tallied 34 wins and was second 16 times. Nelson never competed in the British Open Championship, and he retired from the PGA Tour in 1946 at 34 years of age. Nelson’s 1945 was the best season of any golfer to date: he won no fewer than 18 tournaments, including

The winner of 52 titles in his short and successful career, Nelson won 11 straight tournaments and finished in the top-10 a total of 65 consecutive times 11 in a row, and did so with an average round of 68.33 – a mark that remained intact for 55 years. That year he won more than half of the 30 tournaments he competed in, which gives a clear idea of his overwhelming dominance in top competition. His accuracy with the irons, and in general with all clubs, was impressive, and suffice to say that he won the 1939 Western Open on the difficult Medinah 3 course near Chicago after missing the fairway just once in 72 holes. Nelson began his association with golf as a caddy at the age of 12, months after his family had moved to Fort Worth and he had suffered from a devastating typhoid fever that caused him to lose nearly half his body weight. To the right of the roundabout is the modern hotel reception, and to the left a new cafetería and pro shop area near the first tee, with an impressive terrace overlooking the valley and offering stunning sea views. Next to the bag drop area, and before reaching the pro shop (which shares space with the cafetería) are the entrances to modern changing rooms, absolutely appropriate for a commercially focused course, and a parking area for impeccable state-of-the-art buggies. La vuelta más común es empezar por Los Pinos, para después seguir por Los Lagos. Los hoyos del 1 al 3 de Los Pinos son de bajada y contribuyen a un comienzo de vuelta estimulante, con hoyos asequibles y que hacen que todo fluya. La secuencia es par 5, par 4 y par 4. El consejo es jugar estos hoyos apoyándose por la derecha, ya que las pendientes nos llevarán la bola al centro de la calle. El hoyo 4 es un par 3 corto con un green movido defendido a la izquierda por un búnker. El 5 es un par 4 corto en el que hay que ir, una vez más, por la derecha. El hoyo 6 es el signature hole del campo y precisa de un buen golpe de salida para superar el dog leg a la derecha y enfrentar un green en subida que requerirá armarse de un palo o dos más de lo que se pueda necesitar normalmente. El 7 es un par 3 en ligera subida con bunkers a la derecha. El 8 es un par 5 con dog leg a la izquierda donde con una buena salida los pegadores pueden llegar de dos a green e intentar sacar buen score. El hoyo 9 se ha reducido a par 3, en subida y con el hotel al fondo. Un gran hoyo para completar este primer bucle. Cruzamos entre el hotel y la casa club para encarar el campo de Los Lagos, en el que el agua, como cabía esperar, cobra gran protagonismo. then continue through Los Lagos. The first three holes at Los Pinos are downhill and contribute to a stimulating start to the round, with relatively easy playing conditions ensuring that everything flows fluidly. The best advice is to play these holes – sequence par-5, par-4 and par-4 – towards the right, as the slopes will take the ball to the centre of the fairways. The 4th is a short par-3 with an undulating green defended on the left by a bunker. The 5th is a short par-4 on which you should, once again, aim to the right. The 6th is the course’s signature hole, and it requires a good tee shot to get past the dog-leg right, before facing a steep green that will require a club or two more than normally needed. The 7th is a slightly uphill par-3 with bunkers to the right; while the 8th is a par-5 with a dog-leg left where, after a good tee shot, big-hitters can reach the green in two. The 9th has been reduced to par-3, uphill and with the hotel in the background. A great hole to complete this first loop. We then cross over between the hotel and clubhouse to face the Los Lagos course, where water, as expected, is prominent. The water first appears on the 3rd, to the right of the hole. Before that we begin this nine with a par-4 featuring a dog-leg left and downhill, and a good par-3 of medium distance. The 4th is the first par-5, with water to the right, reachable in two for big-hitters and with an attractive balance between risk and reward. The 5th is an exceptional hole, with a pronounced dog-leg right, at first downhill

The 8th is another fairly easy par-5 reachable in two for big-hitters, with the second (and perhaps third) an uphill shot to the green, before finishing off with another par-4, also uphill but short, so that with an aggressive approach you can conclude your round with some final reward. The day has passed quickly. The holes are quite varied, and each one provides a high-quality and stimulating challenge. Now we are looking forward to playing a round at Los Alcornoques once the reform is finished, as we expect it to be at the same high level as these first two layouts – which have provided us with a wonderful experience and a first-class day of golfing enjoyment. The course has been greatly enhanced and is a surefire recommendation for players of all levels. ■

–El RCG Las Brisas es uno de los campos de mayor prestigio de la Costa del Sol. ¿Cuáles son sus principales méritos? –Su prestigio se debe no solo a su calidad, su historia y su enclave en el maravilloso Valle del Golf marbellí, sino también a su masa social internacional. Todo ello hace de este club un lugar muy atractivo para cualquier golfista de cualquier edad y cualquier nivel deportivo, sobre todo tras la reforma llevada a cabo y las constantes inversiones realizadas para mantener el campo y el resto de las instalaciones al más alto nivel.

Thanks to its six unisex-measured and sloped platforms, it is a course that allows you to adjust to the desired level of difficulty, so that you can opt to play highly competitive rounds or, on the contrary, more fun-filled games, by combining different layouts available on the playing card – which are between 6,500 and 4,800 metres.

Una vez dicho esto, es un campo en el que el agua, presente en doce hoyos, y los bunkers juegan un papel fundamental, de manera que, dependiendo del recorrido que escojas siendo el apropiado para tu hándicap y las distancias que cubras, el jugador experimentará que es muy fácil hacer un bogey y difícil hacer par. Aun así, siempre tendrás la sensación de que es un resultado justo y que sobre todo no querrás hacer otra cosa que jugarlo de nuevo. –¿Cuál es su hoyo preferido y por qué? –Esta es una pregunta muy difícil, ya que todo son hoyos favoritos dependiendo de la categoría en la que se encuentren, pero aun así, si tuviera que decantarme por uno, sería el 11, por su llegada al tee desde el hoyo que le precede. Es un par 3 de unos 180 metros con un búnker en su entrada por la izquierda y con cierto escape por su derecha, donde no te sirve irte largo ya que tienes dos bunkers en la parte trasera del green, siendo uno de los hoyos donde mas palpable se hace la filosofía de Robert Trent Jones Sr., o por lo menos para mí, “hard par, easy bogey”.

–¿Por qué alguien debería hacerse socio de este club de golf? –Como bien he dicho antes, el amplio espectro de nacionalidades y de niveles, que abarca a más de 30 nacionalidades y que incluye a más de una decena de profesionales del Tour como socios, ya habla por sí solo. Por las instalaciones deportivas, por su ambiente social y por los servicios añadidos, es el sitio perfecto en Marbella si buscas un campo de alto nivel, referencia en España, con ambiente social activo durante los doce meses del año y servicios de primer nivel.

–¿Cuál ha sido su mayor satisfacción como director del RCG Las Brisas? –Tengo la suerte de disfrutar de satisfacción continua como director del Club a lo largo de cada año, ya que en cada uno de ellos se nos presenta un reto que, junto con mi equipo, conseguimos solventar para el disfrute de los socios. Sí que es verdad que he tenido la suerte de poder disfrutar de dos grandes hitos en la historia del club que han causado gran satisfacción para mí como director y que son la celebración del 50 aniversario del club, donde llevamos a cabo una edición especial del Pro Am en memoria de Sebastián de Miguel, y, como colofón, una cena de gala donde nos acompañaron muchas de las personas que fueron artífices de generar la solera del Club.

–¿Qué complicaciones conlleva dirigir un club con socios de tantas nacionalidades? –Es complejo pero gratificante. Tengo que decir que nuestra masa social se nutre de socios con la mente abierta y dispuestos a compartir momentos entre sí sin importarles realmente la nación de la que provienen. Todos entienden que son socios de un club marbellí, y esa es la ‘nacionalidad’ con la que tratamos a todos por igual. Sí que es cierto que debes tratar de mantener la información de forma bidireccional y prácticamente en vivo, de manera que todos estén informados de cada iniciativa. Por lo demás, comporta el mismo tipo de retos que pueda tener cualquier otro club de socios.

–Tras las grandes reformas realizadas durante los últimos años en el campo, ¿tienen previsto acometer nuevas mejoras? –Tenemos previsto para este 2022 y 2023 renovar las superficies de tees, además de los collares y entradas de green, junto con la renovación integral de la zona de juego corto, de manera que concentraremos el trabajo en una fase por año que concentrará el trabajo en junio y julio, meses que históricamente son mas tranquilos.

–El RCC Las Brisas es aparte de un campo de golf un verdadero jardín botánico. ¿Qué destacaría de él? –Gerald Huggan nos dejó el mejor legado posible trayendo especies

bunkers play a key role, so that, depending on the layout combination you choose – being the appropriate one for your handicap and the distances you reach – you will find that it is easy to bogey and difficult to par. Even so, you will always have the feeling that it is a fair result and, above all else, you will not want to do anything other than play the course again.

What is your favourite hole and why? That is a very difficult question, as they are all favourite holes, depending on their category. But even so, if I had to choose one, it would be the 11th, because of where you arrive at the tee from the preceding hole. It’s a par-3 of about 180 metres with a bunker in the landing area on the left and something of a saving shot to the right, where it is not advisable to go long as there are two bunkers at the back of the green. This is one of the holes where, at least for me, Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s philosophy is most palpable: “hard par, easy bogey”.

Why should someone become a member of this golf club? As I have noted before, the broad spectrum of nationalities and playing levels, encompassing more than 30 nationalities and including more than a dozen tour professionals as members, already speaks for itself. What has been your greatest satisfaction as manager at Royal Las Brisas? I am fortunate to be able to enjoy continuous satisfaction as club manager, because each year we are always presented with a challenge that, together with my team, we manage to solve for the enjoyment of members. It is true that I have been lucky to enjoy two great milestones in the club’s history that have given me great satisfaction as manager: that is, the celebration of the club’s 50th anniversary, when we held a special edition of the pro-am in memory of Sebastián de Miguel, culminating in a gala dinner where we were accompanied by many of the people who were the architects in generating the club’s venerable tradition.

What are the main complications entailed in running a club with members of so many different nationalities? It is complex but rewarding. I have to say that our membership group is made up of members with an open mind who are willing to share moments with each other without really taking into account the country they come from. Everyone understands that they are members of a Marbella club, and that’s the “nationality” with which we treat everyone equally. Of course, we do have to try to keep information bi-directional and almost live, so that everyone is informed of each initiative. Other than that, it comes with the same kinds of challenges that any other members’ club might have.

–Los resultados de ocupación de los campos apuntan a una vuelta a los buenos tiempos del golf en general. ¿Cree que esta situación se prolongará en el tiempo? –En nuestro caso la tendencia ha sido abrumadora y estamos experimentando un aumento generalizado de rondas por año de cada socio. Nuestros socios no solo pasan más tiempo en España, sino que a la vez juegan mucho más golf, posiblemente fomentado por la pandemia, ya que todos aprecian que es mucho más importante hacer deporte y disfrutar al aire libre. Y esto es posible porque muchas de sus profesiones se pueden compaginar llevando a cabo gestiones en remoto. Esto me hace pensar que la situación se mantendrá en el tiempo, ya que son dos generaciones que transferirán a una tercera esta nueva forma y estilo de vida, lo cual beneficia enormemente al sector. ■

After the major renovations carried out in recent years to the course, do you plan to undertake any new improvements? For 2022 and 2023 we plan to renew the tee surfaces, in addition to the surrounding and landing areas of the greens, together with a comprehensive renovation of the short game area. We will concentrate this work during one phase per year, focused on June and July, months that are historically quieter.

Royal Las Brisas is, apart from being a golf course, an authentic botanical garden. What would you highlight about this aspect of the club? Gerald Huggan left us the best possible legacy, bringing tree species from all over the world: from Africa such as the Cape Chestnut and Prickly Acacias; from Asia, the Laurel of India and Fig Tree of Mysore; from America, the Palo Borracho and Fresno Verde from Mexico; from Australia, the Black Acacia and Waterbush… All this together with multiple species of palm and Mediterranean trees that coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a real botanical garden that we preserve by providing a significant annual budget so that this arboretum is perpetuated into the future.

Figures available for the number of rounds played at golf courses point to a return to the good times of golf in general. Do you think this situation will continue over time? In our case the trend has been staggering, and we are experiencing a general increase in rounds per year for each member. Our members not only spend more time in Spain, but they also play much more golf, possibly encouraged by the pandemic, as everyone appreciates it is much more important to play sport and enjoy the outdoors. This is possible because many have professions that enable them to work remotely. This makes me think that the situation will continue over time, as there are two generations that will transfer this new format and lifestyle to a third, which benefits the sector enormously. ■

AZATA GOLF El 18 hoyos costasoleño estrena campo de prácticas Este verano cumplirá su segundo aniversario el campo que se estrenó en plena pandemia y fue el primero de 18 hoyos en abrirse en los últimos diez años en la Costa del Sol. Azata Golf, en el municipio de Estepona, a muy poca distancia del mar, ha superado con sobresaliente la peor etapa de la pandemia y ahora vive una época de crecimiento y consolidación.

ven a reservar. A la gente le está gustando mucho el campo, aunque al principio les parecía muy difícil pero poco a poco les fue gustando,

La casa club se abrió hace ocho meses y tanto la tienda como el restaurante han tenido muy buena acogida. “Están funcionando bastante bien”, dice Agustín. El restaurante está a cargo de un restaurador asturiano y ofrece “una relación calidad/precio excepcional”. Esta persona es además cocinero y tiene un chiringuito en Estepona, ‘Como pez en el agua’. “Tenemos una calidad del comida muy buena”, remarca el director de Azata Golf, “y unos precios muy muy populares: un club sandwich te cuesta 10 euros y no 30 como en otros campos”, pone como ejemplo. El campo de prácticas se estrenaba el pasado diciembre y la Escuela de Golf Moon Masters comenzaba su andadura un mes después.

Clearly, not everything has been a bed of roses, but the managing director of Azata Golf, Agustín Alonso, says he is extremely satisfied with how things are going. “We opened at the worst time,” he acknowledges, “and it has been very complicated due to the issue of restrictions, but I have to say that people are responding well and above all they like the course, which is very important. “I pay particular attention to the people who return, who book again in the autumn and spring. People really like the course, although at first it seemed quite difficult. Bit by bit they started to appreciate it, they are now having a lot of fun, and they are even becoming members.” In this regard, he notes that they already

Located six kilometres from Huelva capital city, the course was in superb playing conditions, highlighted by magnificent Bermuda greens – fast and of a high-quality. The weather was sunny, with cool temperatures in the early hours of the morning and a slight wind. One of the highlights of the day was the friendliness and great professionalism of the entire Bellavista Golf Club team, led by Alberto Rodríguez Payno. Nuria empezó a jugar al golf a los 6 años en la Escuela de Golf del Club de Golf Son Servera con su entrenador José Luis Palacios (Chiqui), con el que sigue entrenando en la actualidad. A los 14 años fue seleccionada para acceder a la Escuela Nacional Blume (Centro de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo) en Madrid, donde desarrolló sus capacidades de juego, físicas y psíquicas durante 5 años. En aquella etapa formó parte del equipo Nacional sub 18 y Absoluto. En 2015 alcanzó la séptima posición en el Ranking Mundial Amateur (WAGR) y en septiembre dio el salto al profesionalismo. “Desde siempre”, dice, “soñé con ese momento con el objetivo de llegar a competir con las mejores del mundo”. Su mejor cualidad en el golf es “la pasión que tengo por este deporte”, tanto que “vivo por entrenar y competir, y lo disfruto”.

Nuria started playing golf at the age of six at the Son Servera Golf Club academy with her coach José Luis Palacios (Chiqui), and she continues to be coached by him today. At 14, she was selected to attend the Blume National School (High-Performance Centre for Sport) in Madrid, where she developed her playing, physical and mental abilities for five years. At that stage she was a member of both the under-18 and open national teams. In 2015 she reached seventh position in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and in September that same year she made the leap to professionalism. “I’ve always dreamed of that moment,” she says, “with the goal of competing with the best in the world.” Her best quality in golf is “the passion I have for this sport”, so much so that “I live to practice and compete, and I enjoy it”.

What is your opinion of the course? Is there a particular hole or feature that has especially caught your eye? I already had the opportunity to play the course years ago during an event on the Gecko Tour and it was a great experience. It is a fantastic course, and also has a very high level of maintenance. And, from what I’m told, for the Solheim Cup they’re going to do some things that will make it even better. I really like the par-4s that can be reached in one, and the par-5s that can be reached in two. In your opinion, what makes Finca Cortesin stand out from many of the other golf resorts in Europe? Apart from the quality of all its facilities, what I particularly feel here is a family-orientated touch that gives clients a sense of being at home, of feeling good, of enjoying privacy, of exclusivity... Being able to enjoy Finca Cortesin is a true privilege. ■

ería negligente por mi parte hacer una serie de artículos sobre diseño de campos de golf sin hablar del Real Club Valderrama. Este emblemático campo de golf lleva años frustrando y superando tanto a profesionales como a amateurs. No se deje engañar por los greens inmaculados y las calles como alfombras, este campo de golf tiene dientes y constantemente produce la marca de corte más alta en el Tour Europeo. Siempre comparo este campo con jugar al ajedrez con palos de golf. No solo tienes que estar en la parte correcta de la calle, sino que también debes estar a una distancia específica del hoyo. Una buena ronda en este campo es increíblemente gratificante, aunque muy rara. Para mí, uno de los hoyos más destacados de Valderrama es el 4, par 5. De tee a green, es una belleza a lo largo de sus 471 metros. De pie en el tee, el reto al completo se presenta frente a ti. El golpe de salida es tentador, ligeramente cuesta abajo aunque con un gran búnker de calle a la izquierda, pero con mucho espacio para intentar ir a por un gran resultado. THE BEST HOLES ON THE COSTA DEL SOL Rod Bastard, a golf course designer and professional golfer, and hugely experienced as a golf course manager, has launched a series of articles describing what he believes to be the best holes on the Costa del Sol. He now chooses the 4th at ROYAL VALDERRAMA CLUB and the 2ND at THE SAN ROQUE CLUB OLD COURSE.

t would be remiss of me to do a series of articles on golf course design without talking about Royal Valderrama Club. This emblematic golf course has been frustrating and outfoxing pros and amateurs alike for years now. Don’t be fooled by the immaculate greens and carpet-like fairways: this golf course has teeth and consistently produces the highest cut mark on the European Tour. I always liken this course to playing chess with golf clubs. Not only do you have to be in the correct part of the fairway, but you then also must be a specific distance from the hole. A good round on this course is amazingly rewarding, if very rare. For me one of the standout holes at Valderrama is the par-5 fourth. From tee to green, it’s a beauty along the whole of its 516 yards (472 metres). Standing on the tee the whole test is laid out in front of you.The tee shot is inviting, slightly downhill with a large fairway bunker down the left, but plenty of room to entice you to go for a big one. Beware as OB is lurking right, not too far into the lovely cork trees.

SAN ROQUE CLUB OLD COURSE Siguiendo en la zona de Sotogrande, tuve el privilegio de jugar en el recién renovado San Roque Old Course. De hecho, un placer, y la atención al detalle, las instalaciones de calidad y el servicio son insuperables. Este campo se ha colocado entre lo mejor de la costa y a la altura de lo mejor del país. Por supuesto, había jugado en el diseño original de Dave Thomas y siempre es tentador comparar lo viejo con lo nuevo, lo cual es divertido pero también puede ser injusto, ya que estamos en tiempos diferentes. Uno de mis hoyos favoritos del Old Course es el 2 actual, antes el 11. Con 403 metros, este par 4 hándicap 1 ha sido modificado y ensanchado desde el tee, pero como el hoyo se curva suavemente hacia la izquierda y tiene una inclinación de izquierda a derecha en la calle, el golpe de salida es un reto para todos. Podrías intentar jugar de forma conservadora con menos de driver desde el tee, pero esto te dejará un tiro lejano, generalmente hacia los vientos predominantes

There are few outcomes here: could be a birdie but most likely a memorable headache. For me this is a perfect example of aesthetics blending with technical challenges.

THE SAN ROQUE CLUB OLD COUSE Staying down the Sotogrande end of the Coast, I had the privilege of playing the newly renovated San Roque Old Course. Indeed a treat, and the attention to detail, quality facilities and service are second to none. This course has leapt in among the best on the Coast, and is up there with the best in Spain overall. Of course, I had played the original Dave Thomas design and it’s always tempting to compare old and new, which is fun but can also be unfair as we are in different times. One of my favourite holes on the course is the current second, formerly the 11th. At 443 yards (405 metres) this hole has been modified and widened off the tee but – as the hole curves gently round to the left and has a left to right camber on the fairway – the tee shot is a test for all. You could try to play it conservatively with less than a driver off the tee but this will leave you with a long shot in, usually into the prevailing Levante (easterly) winds – not a good option. Right, so we bomb a driver down the left side – job done? Not at all, because waiting for you is one of the loveliest second shots you

will find. You look slightly down on the whole green surface, sprawling bunker to the left, huge oak trees and then the magnetic pond kissing the right edge of the green. This large, gently

unque todavía hay amplias capas de la población española que consideran que el golf es un deporte elitista al alcance solo de economías saneadas, lo cierto es que desde hace ya bastantes años esta desvirtuada y estigmatizada imagen se ha ido desvaneciendo a medida que este deporte iba calando en todos los estratos sociales. De hecho, el golf se ha convertido en el cuarto deporte en número de federados en nuestro país, llegando a superar con creces en sus mejores tiempos la cifra de 300.000 jugadores. La creación de campos y escuelas de golf de titularidad pública son elementos que han contribuido en gran medida a esa popularización del golf, al hacer muy asequible su acceso. Hay incluso municipios, como el costasoleño de Benahavís, donde los vecinos de la localidad no tienen que pagar nada por recibir clases de golf en el campo de prácticas público ubicado junto al pueblo. Andalucía, con una cuarta parte de los campos de golf de España, es un ejemplo de cómo la administración pública se ha comprometido con el deporte del golf, que tantos beneficios procura a la comunidad autónoma desde el punto de vista turístico, como imán que atrae cada año

lthough there are still large sections of the Spanish population who consider golf to be an elitist sport, available only to those with healthy personal budgets, the reality is that for many years now this distorted and stigmatised image has been fading as the sport has grown in popularity in all social strata. In fact, golf has the fourth highest number of federation-registered members of all sports in Spain, far exceeding the figure of 300,000 players during its more buoyant periods. The creation of publicly owned golf courses and academies has greatly contributed to the popularisation of golf, by making access eminently affordable. There are even municipalities, such as Benahavís on the Costa del Sol, where local residents do not have to pay anything to receive golf lessons at the public driving range located near the town. With one-quarter of Spain’s golf courses, Andalucía is an excellent example of how public authorities have made a significant commitment to golf, which brings so many benefits to the region from a tourist perspective, as a magnet that every year attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who travel to Andalucía, especially to the Costa del Sol, to play their favourite sport.

En su empeño por popularizar el golf, el Gobierno andaluz, a través de la Empresa Pública Deporte Andaluz S.A., lleva años gestionando tres escuelas públicas de golf, ubicadas en las provincias de Sevilla, Jaén y Almería. Las dos primeras cuentan con su propio campo de golf, de 9 hoyos en ambos casos. El objetivo de la Consejería de Turismo y Deporte es que las tres escuelas públicas de golf de Andalucía «fomenten el ejercicio físico y el deporte base y amplíen el acceso a esta práctica deportiva a la mayor parte de la población». Las instalaciones están abiertas tanto a personas que practican esta modalidad de forma habitual y que quieren mantener un entrenamiento, como a aquellos que se acercan al golf por primera vez. LA CARTUJA En la Isla de la Cartuja, a cinco minutos del centro de la ciudad de Sevilla, se encuentran las instalaciones deportivas de La Cartuja, que incluyen campo de 9 hoyos par 29, de 2.614 metros, con siete pares 3 y dos pares 4 (de 277 y 253 metros), campo de prácticas con 84 puestos, y tres greens de prácticas (approach, chip y putt).

Tanto los precios de los green fees como de las clases son muy asequibles. El green fee para 9 hoyos es de 9,50 euros de lunes a viernes y de 13 los fines de semana, mientras que el de 18 hoyos es 16 y 21 euros respectivamente. También es posible jugar por únicamente 3 euros, aprovechado el tiempo hasta el último rayo de sol, con el denominado Sunset Green fee. The first two have their own golf course, nine holes in both cases. The ministry for tourism and sport’s objective is for the three public golf academies in Andalucía to “promote physical exercise and grassroots sport, and to expand access to golf to most of the population”. The facilities are open both to people who play golf on a regular basis, and want to maintain their playing levels through practice, and to others who are introduced to golf for the first time. LA CARTUJA Located in the Isla de la Cartuja area, five minutes from Sevilla’s city centre, the La Cartuja sports facilities include a nine-hole, par29 course, 2,614 metres long, with seven par-3s and two par-4s (277 and 253 metres), a driving range with 84 tee areas, and three practice greens (approach, chipping and putting). ESTABILIDAD PARA EL SWING

i queremos lograr un swing consistente y constante, debemos saber que la estabilidad juega un papel imprescindible. Si no tienes la estabilidad y control motor suficientes para transferir de manera eficiente la energía, será imposible generar velocidad y una adecuada rotación (giro o desgiro), ya que la estabilidad y la rotación van de la mano, junto con la movilidad. Es muy común ver en golfistas que no tienen buena estabilidad cometer errores técnicos en el backswing o downswing y a su vez tienen dificultades para mantenerse estables tras golpear la bola. Imaginaos golpear la bola encima de una tabla de surf: difícilmente lograremos un swing consistente y potente, ya que nuestro cuerpo necesitará compensar y, por lo tanto, gastar energía para poder estabilizar al cuerpo. Por otro lado, tener una buena estabilidad no sólo mejorará tu swing de golf sino que también te ayudará a prevenir lesiones. Una falta de estabilidad central, por ejemplo, puede llevar a contraer dolores o lesiones en la espalda. Así que, si quieres conseguir mayor potencia en tu swing y a su vez prevenir lesiones, mejora tu estabilidad con un componente de rotación y anti rotación. A continuación os muestro algunos ejercicios que ponen a prueba la estabilidad, pero recordad que son solo ejemplos, ya que los mismos deben ser seleccionados según características de cada golfista.

SWING STABILITY

f you want to achieve a consistent swing, you need to be aware that stability plays an essential role. If you don’t have sufficient stability and motor control to transfer energy efficiently, it will be impossible to generate speed and adequate rotation (turn and reverse turn), as stability and rotation go hand in hand – together with mobility. It is common to see golfers who do not have good stability make technical errors during the backswing or downswing, and consequently experience difficulty remaining stable after hitting the ball. Imagine hitting a ball on top of a surfboard.You would rarely be able to achieve a consistent and powerful swing, as our body needs to compensate – and, therefore, exert energy – to be able to stabilise itself. On the other hand, having good stability will not only improve your golf swing but also help prevent injuries. A lack of core stability, for example, can lead to back pain or injury. So, if you want to obtain more power out of your swing while also preventing injury, improve your stability with a rotational and anti-rotational component. Here I show you some exercises that test stability, but remember that they are just examples – and ultimately they must be selected according to the characteristics of each golfer.

EJERCICIO 1 De pie, extender los brazos por encima de la cabeza cogiendo una goma elástica o polea situada por encima de la misma (mano más cercana a la goma o polea por debajo). Desde esa posición, realizar una inclinación lateral de torso y regresar a la posición inicial. Flexionar un poco las rodillas. Repetir el otro lado. EXERCISE 1 While standing, extend your arms above your head, grasping a rubber band or pulley located above (hand closest to the rubber band or pulley below). From that position, perform a lateral torso tilt and return to the starting position. Bend your knees a little. Repeat for the other side.

Al extender las piernas, llevar la barra al frente y a la vez elevar la pierna que estaba retrasada. Mirada siempre al frente. Cambiar de pierna y lado de rotación. EXERCISE 2 Stand in front of the bar and from a lunge position bring the bar with the ball to one side (torso rotation). As you extend your legs, bring the bar to the front and at the same time raise the leg that was behind. Always look ahead. Change legs and the rotating side.

EJERCICIO 3 Ponerse de lado a una polea o goma elástica colocada a la altura del pecho y extender brazos extendidos al frente. Desde allí realizar una sentadilla lateral (foto), regresar y al hacerlo elevar a unos 90 grados la pierna de afuera (la que hace la sentadilla) intentando mantener el cuerpo lo más estable posible. Mantener siempre las manos y agarre en el centro del pecho. EXERCISE 3 Stand to one side of a pulley or elastic band placed at chest height, and extend your arms out in front. From there perform a side squat (photo), return and, as you do so, raise your outside leg (the one that does the squat) to about 90 degrees – trying to keep the body as stable as possible. Always keep your hands and grip in the centre of the chest.

Antes de entrar en temas técnicos con la clase de golf de este número, quisiera empezar con esta pequeña introducción. La clase estará mas enfocada para que jugadores con hándicaps medios o altos creen un método de entrenamiento, siguiendo unas pautas, creando una rutina, y que de ese modo aprovechen más sus horas de entrenamiento para así poder bajar mas rápido sus resultados en el campo y con ello su handicap. El enfocar esta clase a este tipo de jugador es porque tienen que entender que si son capaces de crear su propio método de entrenamiento desviando su concentración a puntos claves del swing y dejando al lado esa preocupación constante del golpeo de la bola, podrán de este modo tener una evolución técnica antes y los golpes serán más efectivos. Esta clase te ayudará a bajar tu hándicap.

Before I get into the technical stuff with this issue’s golf lesson, I would like to start with a brief introduction. The lesson will be focused on players with medium or high handicaps and creating a practice method, following some guidelines, by establishing a routine that enables golfers to take more advantage of their practice hours in order to lower results faster on the course – and consequently their handicap. Focusing on this type of player is aimed at helping them understand that – if they are able to create their own practice method, diverting their concentration to key points of the swing and setting aside constant concern about how to strike the ball – they will be able to achieve technical evolution quicker and their shots will be more effective. In short, this lesson will help golfers lower their handicap.

La clave para tener un buen método es el orden. Dedicadle un mínimo de tiempo a cada uno de estos puntos. Si vais a entrenar, no dedicaros a tirar bolas, Cread vuestra rutina.

The key to having a good method is order. Dedicate a minimum amount of time to each of these points. If you are going to practise, don’t dedicate all your time to hitting balls. Create your own routine.

THE FIFTH FACTOR: THE CLUBS YOU USE As you can see, I have listed four factors related to the swing, which I am going to explain more about, and the last one relates to an external element – the club you use – which will warrant an entire article where I can offer advice on what type of equipment to use depending on your level of play.

EL GRIP

THE GRIP

Es el contacto directo de tu cuerpo con el palo y bien es sabido que la cara del palo llegará apuntando a un lugar u otro dependiendo de cómo sea nuestro grip (fuerte, neutro o débil). Pero no vamos a dar una clase de grip hoy, ni vamos a explicar los efectos con la bola. En esta clase quiero aconsejaros y ayudaros en vuestro entrenamiento. Mi primer consejo: siempre digo a mis alumnos que la bola recta no existe y que cada jugador tiene que tener su golpe natural. En caso de JUGADORES CON HÁNDICAP MEDIO O ALTO, (es a lo que nos enfocamos en esta clase), recomiendo que el golpe natural sea el draw (en jugador diestro efecto de derecha a izquierda), así que trabajad en fortalezer un poco vuestro grip (montar un poco la mano izquierda).

This represents the direct contact of your body with the club, and it is well known that the face of the club will end up pointing to one place or another depending on your grip (strong, neutral or weak). But we are not going to have a grip lesson in this issue, and neither am I going to explain the effect on the ball. In this lesson I want to offer advice and help in relation to your practice sessions. My first piece of advice: I always tell students that a straight ball does not exist and that each player has to play their natural stroke. In the case of players with a medium or high handicap (which is what we are focusing on in this lesson), I recommend that the natural shot be a draw (for a right-handed player, from right to left), so work on strengthening your grip (press the left hand a little).

EMPUÑADURA Pocas veces hablamos del “espacio” que tienen que ocupar nuestras manos en la empuñadura del palo, PONER DOS CINTAS, una arriba y otra abajo, dejando DOS DEDOS hasta el final de la empuñadura en ambos lados y mantened vuestras manos dentro de esos límites. Esto ayudará a no tener un grip muy extenso y rígido, a la vez que también ayudará a que se muevan mejor las muñecas. MARCAR CON ROTULADOR VUESTRO GUANTE Comenté antes que yo sí soy partidario de poner un grip fuerte a jugadores principiantes o de hándicap medio. Para ello, pintad una pequeña marca en vuestro guante en el pulgar izquierdo y tratad de tapar la marca con vuestra mano derecha antes de iniciar el swing. Conseguirás más solidez en tus impactos.

HOLDING THE GRIP We rarely talk about the “space” that our hands should occupy in holding on to the club. Place two tapes, one above and one below, leaving two fingers to the end of the grip on both sides, and maintain your hands within those limits. This will help you have a long and stiff grip, while also helping your wrists move better. MARK YOUR GLOVE WITH A MARKER I mentioned before that I am in favour of encouraging beginners and medium-handicap players to have a strong grip. To achieve this, draw a small mark on the glove where your left left thumb fits and try to cover the mark with your right hand before starting the swing. Doing this will help you achieve a more solid impact.

Hemos escrito en clases anteriores sobre el STANCE, pero como dije anteriormente seguimos creando nuestro método de trabajo y tenemos que saber en qué puntos tenéis que fijaros. Hablamos de practicas en el driving range y por tanto podremos utilizar nuestras herramientas (varillas y tees, entre otras). Servirán de gran ayuda, sobre todo si estáis solos, para tener referencias. El fallo más común aquí es que no sabemos crear o mantener los ángulos o flexión correcta del cuerpo (veo muchos jugadores en posiciones muy rectas y otros muy inclinados). Trabaja la posición correcta, ayúdate con las varillas. Trata de que los hombros apunten a la bola cuando subimos el palo. Marca bien los ángulos de las piernas y la espalda y trata de mantenerlos durante la subida.

I have written in previous lessons about the stance but, as I noted above, this lesson is about creating your own working method and to that end you have to know what areas to pay attention to. I am referring to practice on the driving range, and therefore you will be able to use tools (clubs and tees, among others) that will be of great help, especially if you are alone, in order to have key reference points. The most common mistake is that players don’t know how to create or maintain the correct angles and body flexion (I see many players in very straight positions and others leaning over). Work on the correct position, and steady yourself with the club shaft. Try to ensure your shoulders are aimed at the ball as you raise the club. Take good note of the angles of your legs and back, and try to maintain those angles during the upswing.

Vamos al grano y seguimos en la línea de la clase. Es importante que este ejercicio esté incluido en vuestra práctica. Se trata de poder trabajar con un solo ejercicio varias cosas: el largo del swing y el ángulo de subida y bajada. Es cierto y de hecho no descarto entrar más en profundidad en este tema, pero los jugadores del perfil al que estamos dedicando este número solo tienen que trabajar esto. Colocar un tee largo en el grip del palo (un hierro) y tratar que tanto en la subida como en el final del swing, el tee apunte al suelo. Repetid este ejercicio, primero una mano, luego con la otra, y terminar con ambas, hasta que lo controléis.

It is important that this exercise is included in your practice sessions. It is about being able to work on several things with a single exercise: the length of the swing and the angle of the club’s upswing and downswing. Although I never rule out going deeper into this topic, players with the profile I noted for this lesson only need to work on this aspect. Place a long tee on the grip of the club (an iron) and try to aim the tee at the ground both when raising the club and at the end of the swing. Repeat this exercise – first with one hand, then with the other – and finish with both, until you control it.

La velocidad del swing siempre va a estar definida por otros muchos factores, tanto físicos del jugador como técnicos, donde la coordinación es la clave de todo. El swing de prácticas, al que no se le da mucha importancia, nos facilita mucha información de la velocidad con la que nos encontramos cómodos y con la que realmente coordinamos. Dos consejos que de nuevo tenéis que incluir en vuestra rutina de prácticas:

The speed of the swing will always be defined by many other factors, both physical and technical, and coordination is the key to everything. The practice swing, which does not tend to be given much importance, provides us with a lot of information about the speed we are comfortable with and how it is coordinated. Two tips that once again you should include in your practice routine:

EL TIEMPO Y PARTES DEL SWING Dividid el swing en tres partes (subida, impacto, final), haced que el palo roce el suelo, sin mover vuestros pies, solo con la parte superior del cuerpo, parad en el inicio de la subida dos segundos y continuáis hasta el final. Esto os ayudará mucho a sentir dónde se encuentra el palo en cada momento y a marcar bien los tiempos.

TIMING AND PARTS OF THE SWING Divide the swing into three parts (swing, impact and culmination). Touch the ground with the club – without moving your feet, only moving the upper part of your body – and hold at the beginning of the upswing for two seconds before continuing to the final point of the swing. This will help you feel where the club is at each moment, so you can note these points for future reference.

FINAL DEL SWING Punto de referencia para saber si nuestra velocidad y técnica en general es buena. Tratad siempre de apuntar con vuestros hombros al objetivo al finalizar el swing sin perder el equilibrio. La estabilidad, si no es buena, afecta mucho a la regularidad en el campo. Si eres muy irregular en el campo, controla la estabilidad de tu swing.

SWING COMPLETION This is the key reference point for knowing if your speed and technique, in general, is good. Always try to aim your shoulders at the target at the end of the swing without losing your balance. If your stability is not good, this will greatly affect your consistency on the course. If you are very inconsistent on the course, control your swing stability.

LOS PALOS QUE UTILIZAMOS Mi consejo , es que antes de comprar palos, lo habléis con vuestro profesional. No hay nadie que os pueda ayudar más que ellos y seguro estarán encantados de hacerlo. Hablar de palos alargaría mucho este artículo y no es el objetivo, pero sí deciros que cada nivel de juego, características fisicas y técnicas del jugador requieren de palos o varillas distintas, con lo cual y para no extenderme os recomiendo que no compréis palos sin antes consultarlo con un experto.

THE CLUBS YOU USE My advice is that you talk to your professional before buying clubs. There is no one who can help you more than they can, and they will most certainly be happy to do so. Talking about clubs would lengthen this article considerably, and that’s not the objective with this lesson, but I will say that each level of a golfer’s game and physical and technical characteristics requires different clubs or shafts. So I strongly recommend that you do not buy clubs without first consulting an expert.

Otro aspecto importante resaltado por Cañavate es “la importancia de la implicación de distintos sectores del golf en la elaboración de los criterios para la concesión de este distintivo, que han contado con la participación de la Real Federación Española y Andaluza de Golf, y la Asociación Española de Greenkeepers, además de un campo de referencia, en este caso Finca Cortesín, que ha servido como modelo de evaluación”. inca Cortesín has become the first course to obtain the seal of quality for efficient golf course irrigation using regenerated water. The course, which in September 2023 will host the Solheim Cup, has met the parameters established for granting this distinctive seal, which other golf courses that receive regenerated water from Acosol for irrigation are also eligible to apply for. Carlos Cañavate, general manager of Acosol (a public utility company operating under the auspices of the Association of Western Costa del Sol Municipalities), highly values the granting of this first distinction to a course that has always been resolutely committed to sustainability and excellence. “With this distinction,” he says, “we highlight

the value of efficient water management, and in this case regenerated water. To obtain this distinctive seal, courses must meet a series of requirements that are included in a protocol developed by the company Xtratega and which comprise very simple methodology.” Another important aspect highlighted by Cañavate is “the importance of different golf sectors being involved in the development of the criteria for awarding this distinction, including the Royal Spanish and Andalucian Golf Federations, and the Spanish Association of Greenkeepers, in addition to a flagship course – in this case Finca Cortesín – which

We have also changed plastic bottles on the golf course for other types, which enables us to eliminate more than 32,000 plastic bottles a year; we have installed a colony of bees that allows us to produce our own honey, as well as enrich the ecosystem; and we are in the process of concluding our certification with the prestigious international GEO foundation. ■

Launch of Solheim Cup Trophy Around Spain FITUR, the international tourism fair in Madrid, was the setting chosen in January to present the Solheim Cup Trophy Tour. This initiative will continue for a year and a half, under the custody of more than one hundred “Club Ambassadors” and with the objective of drawing the attention of thousands of people from all over Spain towards the world of golf. ANDALUCÍA GOLF HUB First Fully Integrated Reader for Andalucian Green Fees “Andalucía Golf Hub”... That is the name given by the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation’s commercial courses committee to the first green fee reader that makes it possible to integrate inventories for all golf courses in Andalucía. It comprises a single access point where anyone who wants to organise a golfing holiday in Andalucía can manage their reservations at various golf courses simultaneously. The new tool was unveiled at the Fitur international tourism fair in Madrid, during an official presentation presided over by Pablo Mansilla, president of the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation, and attended by numerous authorities, members of the press and representatives of institutions associated with the Andalucian golf industry. The objective is to connect different green fee reservation systems at golf courses throughout Andalucía, and to simplify operations for both tourists who are organising a trip from outside the region and local-based players keen to discover new courses. This new function will be free for the more than 100 federationregistered golf courses in Andalucía, providing a new opportunity for them to showcase their products and reservation services to customers from anywhere in the world. At the same time, it will offer an easy and convenient option for those golfers who want to organise their own trips to the region directly online

and who, until now, have been forced to manage each reservation through the separate websites of each golf course they want to visit. A task that, in most cases, can be quite tedious and which, on many occasions, makes the client feel lost delving into this extensive golf destination. Todo esto me lo he vuelto a encontrar 24 años después. El golf era para mí un mundo totalmente nuevo, inclusive con respecto al vocabulario. No tenía ni idea de lo que era el loft, de que se podían añadir o quitar grados, del grip, del bounce, de que el ángulo de ataque tiene que ser negativo. Nada más empezar, me sentí muy perdido. Y en las inversiones pasa exactamente lo mismo. Todas ellas vienen acompañadas de un vocabulario que a la gente le puede asustar, como a mí en el golf. Que si volatilidad, el ratio de sharpe, el máximo drawdown, entre otros. Pero al final con el tiempo te acabas familiarizando con los conceptos. A un nivel más mental, mi experiencia como trader me fue de gran ayuda en el golf. Las sensaciones que experimentas son muy parecidas. No tienes expectativas realistas en un torneo o en cada hoyo y el riesgo de caer en la frustración es fácil. Por ello, debes pensar como en el trading, ir operación por operación, aceptar que un porcentaje de las operaciones será malo y es importante no pretender llegar a puntos que no están a tu alcance. De hecho, me parece imposible que alguien que juegue bien al golf no invierta o haga trading bien, porque el proceso mental es prácticamente el mismo.

And in investments exactly the same thing happens. All of them are accompanied by a vocabulary that can scare people, like me in golf. What about volatility, the sharpe ratio and maximum drawdown, among others. But in the end, over time, you become familiar with the concepts. On a more mental level, my experience as a trader was a great help to me in golf. The sensations you experience are very similar. You don’t have realistic expectations at a tournament or at every hole, and the risk of becoming frustrated is easy. For this reason, you must think like in trading: go operation by operation, accept that a percentage of the operations will be bad. and it is important not to try to achieve points that are not within your reach. Hace ya 11 que paso olímpicamente de ver lo que hacen los mercados y de formular ninguna previsión.

We cannot overlook asking you about the subject of Bitcoin and the cryptos that are now so popular, and the fact it seems as though everyone is making money with them. What do you think? Bitcoin and cryptos are in fashion, and some will earn money as in any investment, but many will also lose large amounts. Every day the number of accounts invested in cryptos that go bankrupt and lose everything is published. We are talking about an average that is close to 100,000 bankrupt accounts per day, and with peaks.
