THE LIGHT IN MY APARTMENT
“The allure of daylight is that it becomes the most enduring of memories, which touches our deepest perception and emotions, and affects our notion of time and place. Light falling on the object of architecture does not tell the whole story; it creates an emergent and transient state that draws a veil over architecture’s form. Notions of space, transparency, lightness and darkness, solid and void, all emanate from this memoryscape that stirs the senses and brings equilibrium to our being.”
Brent RichardsI have been living in this apartment for 3 years now, and I have never taken the time to observe how light behaves throughout specific spaces in this place. Therefore, the following images define a sequence of moments that are experienced in my apartment.
The first one expresses an invitation to the unknown. This space is defined by the first special moment in which light communicates with the user, serves as a guide, or simply exposes its mysterious capacities.
The hallway has both artificial and natural light. However, they do not behave in the same way. The skylights allow light to enter the building in a specific direction.
And then the Journey begins...
The second moment can be found at my living room’s floor. Where vibrant daylight enters the space and draws a sharp and defined strip of light.
Then, a peaceful sound starts to penetrate the entire place. The sound of water is reflected in the third moment. Interestingly, this moment implied movement, harmony, and mystery, at the same time.
It seems like these moments serve as guidance to my room. The wall facing my room’s door illustrates the fourth moment. In this moment, light behaves differently; it looks blurred, almost translucent.
Right next to my closet, the fifth moment can be experienced. Again, the reflection of water can be observed in this moment. It looks as if someone had scratched the light.
Finally, the sixth and seventh moments can be found by approaching my restroom, both at the door but quite different. The first one being more subtle, since it has the window’s silhouette. On the other hand, the last moment is similar to the third and fifth moments. They all resemble porosity, express a sense of movement, and arouse the user’s curiosity.
All these moments reflect my apartment’s uniqueness. They are related to each other because they share the same essence and express a similar experience.
