THE RUIN - AN EXPERIENCE
There are many responses one can have by facing the phenomenon of daylight. This project raised many measurable and unmeasurable questions about the qualities of light. Daylight plays an important role in our everyday lives, it structures our day and enhances different places. Is it possible to control light? or, are we only able to manage it in limited ways? After all, light surprises us, it creates uncertainty. Light is dramatic, playful, and unpredictable, but most importantly, it is powerful. This is the unmeasurable quality of light, it is our strongest tool when it comes to designing spaces. The concept of “Abundance” establishes a dynamic experience through light’s behavior in the particular setting of the Sonoran Desert. From a broader context, the concept aims to address a series of queries between contrasting worlds. The concept responds to both daylight and time to define an infinite path that starts to diminish as one enters and exits the ruin. The ruin’s context is nothing but abundant in every single aspect. The sahuaros standing gracefully within the mountains, the wind, and the sound evoke emotions. This project was a process of experimenting, acknowledging, remembering, and creating. There were many times when it was necessary to go back and forth, in order to achieve a meaningful response to the site’s richness. There are still many unmeasurable questions without an answer, but that makes the journey even more exciting. I believe there is never going to be a specific way in which one should use light. It should be the other way around, daylight will always be the one that guides us into the unmeasurable world we are looking for.
