R RE: Letter of Nom nat on Ana Ast azaran, Assoc ate AIA

A A Arizona Assoc ate Award

Dear AIA Arizona, 2023 Associate Award Jurors,

I am honored and privileged to nominate Ms. Ana Astiazaran, Associate AIA , to receive the 2023 AIA Arizona Associate Award, whom met at the end of 2019 while looking to initiate a NOMAaz Students Chapter at the University of Arizona

Since then, Ana has demonstrated a unique and purposeful passion for our profession beyond the typical day-to-day practice commitments. Right after meeting for the first time with her about the opportunity of having NOMAaz as a resource to students, witnessed the presence of a young and enthusiastic leader with no fear of taking on activities she truly believed would change the path of those students of diverse and non -diverse backgrounds Her commitment res ulted in the recruitment of the first three students the connection and support of their University Faculty Advisor Damon Le verett, AIA, and finally the formation of the NOMA S at U of A.

Her commitment to the profession was confirmed when we accepted Ana in 2021 as an intern during the COVID transition, and she indicated she would be attending our office in Phoenix twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, driving every single morning and evening from Tucson o start her workday as everyone else at 8:00 AM.

Since 2021, Ana ha s made an exemplary presence among our young emerging professionals by actively participating in different AIA activities at the State and National level, volunteering to support different programs, including COTE, AIA Associates, National Convention , and National Award’s Committees

Her profession and personal commitment to the profession truly deserve recognition through the A A Associate Award; I trust that, as Juror, you will agree

I will happily address any questions related to my letter of recommendation.

Dear AIA Arizona, 2023 Associate Award Jurors,

It is with great pleasure that I write t his letter of nomination and recommendation for Ana Astiazaran to receive the 2023 AIA Arizona Associate Award I have known Ana for the past three years as a student and mentee in studio courses at the University of Arizona School of Architecture (CAPLA) Importantly, Ana stands out for her achievements in nationally recognized competitions and awards, including the 2021 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge and recognition as the 2021 COTE Top Ten for Students At CAPLA, Ana is the founding member and first president of the school’s NOMAS chapter. Her leadership was exemplary, and her vision has allowed the student organization to flourish now into its third year.

Since leaving college last year Ana has been active with the AIA and the architectural community as a volunteer for the AIA Associates Planning Committee and as a guest on an episode of Tracing Architecture, a podcast that explores the layers of architecture. She has also engaged at A’23 where she volunteered at the new AIA San Francisco & The Center for Architecture + Design In 2023 Ana was elected to the AIA Arizona Board of Directors to represent Arizona on the AIA National Associates Committee

Additionally, Ana works well with ot hers, and her colleagues respect and recognize her as a strong supporter and leader for AIA Arizona. I have no doubt that Ana will be successful in her continued trajectory in the AIA and beyond, and I ask that you strongly consider her recognition for this award.

Sincerely,

Dear AIA Arizona Selection Committee,

I am privileged to be able to recommend Ana Astiazaran , Associate AIA, to be selected for the 2023 AIA Arizona Associates Award. I have been fortunate to work with Ana the past year at Corgan working together on various Commercial Architecture projects after she graduated from the University of Arizona in May 2022 with her Bachelor’s of Architecture degree.

Since starting at Corgan, she has shown a wealth of skills, passion, and eagerness to learn. Her positive attitude has been infectious and always makes it a pleasure to collaborate together Most recently, we have been working together on a large , complex redevelopment project and she has been a vital member of the team. She provides thought-provoking ideas along with consistently executing those concepts into highquality design imagery Recently, she has been elevating her leadership role by presenting these designs to the client and our office while receiving high praise throughout.

Outside of the office, she has shown a commitment to the architecture profession through serving as the AIA Associates representative locally and nationally for the State of Arizona. She frequently volunteers throughout multiple events, such as the 2023 AIA national conference which included frequent meetings and preparation to help make the conference run smoothly She is passionate to educate herself and ambitious to become a prominent leader in the industry

Other industry involvement for her includes being a member of NOMA and being vocal about the importance of getting more minority architects in to the profession. She recently used the opportunity to share her story when she moderated a panel of emerging architects on an episode of the “Trac ing Architecture” podcast. If that wasn’t enough, she recently used her limited spare time to submi an incredible entry into a global design competition for a cost-effective educational facility in Africa She consistently finds ways to inspire mentor, and be the prototype of what a young leader should be.

Ana’s commitment and passion to the profession is exemplary and we would all be privileged to have her be selected to receive the AIA Arizona Associates Award. I fully endorse her for this distinguished honor and would happily address any questions the selection panel may have.

Sincerely,

1850 North Central Avenue, Suite 300 Phoenix, Arizona 85004 602 302 6400

BIOGRAPHY

Ana Astiazaran, AIA Assoc., NOMA

Ana Astiazaran was born and raised in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico . As the daughter of a practicing architect, she was immersed in the world of design at an early age. Her early interests in the field of architecture and intrinsic enthusiasm for learning nurtured a dream to study architecture in the United States. By way of academic merit, Ana earned an international scholarship and was able to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from CAPLA at the University of Arizona and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2022.

During the course of realizing that same dream, Ana had the opportunity to work alongside a small cohort of undergraduate students and faculty to establish CAPLA’s NOMAS, a student chapter for the National Organization for Minority Architects (NOMA). Through her commitment and leadership to the successful foundation of the student group, Ana was appointed as the first president of NOMAS. It is through NOMA that Ana came to meet other professionals and further immerse herself in the architecture community.

Ana’s involvement within the professional community and engagement in seminars, conferences, and local conversations made her aware of the urgency of sustainability in architectural design. By adopting a critical stance on the climate crisis as a student and embedding those beliefs in her studio design work, Ana was awarded the 2021 COTE Top Ten for Students Award. Her project, Undefined Boundaries , was selected among eight hundred international submissions. Having been a recipient of the prestigious award, Ana was selected as a juror for the 2022 AIA Architecture Professional Awards

Upon graduating, Ana began her professional career at Corgan in the Commercial sector of the Phoenix office. She has demonstrated a proactive attitude towards professional and personal growth and development. As a designer, she has shown exemplary dedication to projects and client vision. As a young professional, Ana has been a committed member of NOMA and AIA to serve as a role model for other women and young professionals.

Ana has become an advocate for the profession since she continues to be inspired by women in architecture and understands the importance of representation within the profession. She volunteered as part of the 2023 AIA Arizona Associates Planning Committee and currently serves as the 2023-2024 Arizona State Associate Representative within AIA National, where she is part of the sustainability group, Turquoise Agenda She attended the 2023 AIA National Conference and volunteered at the AIA San Francisco & The Center of Architecture + Design.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The beginning of a design is like a blank canvas . The beauty of architecture is the implicit faith that the stroke of the pen will render a satisfactory composition of white to black that illustrates a sequence of moments .

With each design I like to translate my background and culture to these moments. As an advocate for change I believe architecture has the power to touch souls with storytelling We create inhabitable dimensions to reshape one’s experience. I love what I do because I know that I am participating in uplifting people’s everyday experiences. I take that responsibility seriously.

In my short time as an emerging professional, I have adopted an urgency for true intention . It is my ambition to apply this belief to my life as an architect. That being said, I strongly trust that inspiring others that perhaps have a similar background to mine or just respect my work will have the same, if not more, impact as the strokes we define in a blank canvas .

The concept of Undefined Boundaries reflects the border between Mexico and the United States, by implying how the placement of dynamic spaces can diminish a “defined” boundary. The Collaboration Center for Innovation “Undefined Boundaries” will serve as the public gateway for the Innovation Garden, a community resource and amenity for the application of research and education. Over the past years, the world has been acknowledging controversial problems, which cannot be ignored. The building pursues the goal of diminishing borders, where different aspects like inside/out, near/far, private/public, and built/ natural blend together to become one. The project celebrates diversity, uncertainty and sustainability. The soul of the building emerges from the essence of the culture and history of the city of Tucson.

In the village of Saré Yoba Diéga, Senegal, a new primary school will become the heart of this community. The concept of “Nna Maloo” relies on precisely what it means: “our light”. The project aims to celebrate culture in design and its light is empowered by the people that inhabit it. A school becomes a home for the children and their families; the place witnesses stories of learning, growth, and love. “Nna Maloo” will serve as the heart of the community of Sare Yoba Diega.

The goal of this project is to promote the importance of education now and in future generations. Therefore, culture in design recognizes how one generation connects to the next, their relationship with the land, and their system of governance. Architecture has the power to ambition magical inhabitation; interaction with nature, materials, the ground itself, and between people. The building’s composition promotes a vital activity for children’s growth: movement. Three elongated volumes encourage the user to move from one place to another, along with an elevated roof that evokes smooth gestures like the river waves or the Kora’s vibrancy.

Architect/Designer Corgan

Located in the PGA Headquarters at Frisco, TX. The Link aims to become a catalyst for office buildings around the area. The conceptual exercise for this project consisted of a series of proposals for the building envelope. This project relied heavily on client feedback, therefore, its materiality and form was based on the following criteria:

• The architecture is to be Texas Modern

A balance of Spanish origins, Texas roots, modernist principles and industrial language will define the design. The Link will set precedent on further defining ‘North Texas Modern’.

• Building will exhibit depth and texture

A concrete and steel frame will allow for extrusions, balconies, and a variety of depth in the facade to create a bespoke design unlike typical value buildings in North Texas.

• Design will respect context built at the PGA HQ Campus

Responsibilities

Worked in collaboration with project specialists from the Corgan Dallas office to create several visualizations for each of the building proposals: The Stack, The Veranda, The Screen, and The Veil.
