THE RUIN - A MEMORY
Growing up in Hermosillo, usually called “la ciudad del Sol”, has made me appreciate daylight quality in an intimate way. Hermosillo’s climate is extremely hot, the sun has a strong presence. I believe that is the reason why Hermosillo has the most beautiful sunsets. I thought my experience with light started when I decided to study architecture. However, I have realized light has always been part of my life, it articulates even what is intangible. The house that I grew up in had this shaded courtyard, it was intentionally oriented to appreciate the sunsets, so we had an extensive view towards the west. I would play football with my brothers and cousins, while my dad and uncles were making tacos de carne asada. I remember that as soon as the sun was setting the tacos were ready. The sunsets were so playful; a perfect combination between warm and cold tones. I would notice that the daylight gives color to the wind, the smell of the food, the smoke of the grill, and even the time we spent there. And as the night arises we would gather near the grill, to enjoy food and ourselves.
