About Mesahat Mesahat was established on September 5th 2015 to work on identifying and reducing security risks, and eliminating the social & cultural obstacles that are faced by sexual, and gender minorities in the Nile Valley Area (Egypt & Sudan). Mesahat works to create the means and tools for LGBTQI activists to carry on their work safely and contribute to creating stronger and more connected trans/queer* geographies.

Position Purpose
Assist in all aspects of research projects, including data collection, interview coordination, qualitative / quantitative analysis, and report writing.
Working Hours
40 hours per week

Key Objectives of the Position The key objectives of this position are: ●
Assist in the development and implementation of anonymous data collection tools (e.g., Tella, KoboToolbox).
●
Schedule and coordinate key informant interviews with LGBTQ+ activists, lawyers, and human rights defenders, ensuring informed consent and cultural sensitivity.
●
Conduct background research on relevant topics and LGBTQ+ issues in the Nile Valley region.
●
Transcribe and analyze qualitative interview data using appropriate software to identify key themes and narratives.
●
Analyze and interpret quantitative data.
●
Assist in writing research reports.
●
Support with project logistics and administrative tasks as needed (e.g., data entry, meeting minutes).

Recruit participants for interviews, ensuring informed consent and cultural sensitivity with the assistance of the Advocacy Officer

Schedule and coordinate key informant interviews with LGBTQ+ activists, lawyers, and human rights defenders, considering language availability, accessibility, and safety concerns.
●
Conduct pre-interview briefings and debriefings with participants.
●
Collect and document additional data from reliable sources (e.g., reports, news articles) based on project needs.
●
Maintain detailed records of all communication and data collection activities.
Data analysis and report writing

●
Assist with both quantitative and qualitative data cleaning and preparation.
●
Transcribe interview recordings accurately and confidentially, using appropriate software and adhering to ethical guidelines.
●
Code and analyze qualitative data using appropriate methods (e.g., thematic analysis, narrative analysis) under the
guidance of the Research Director and Data Analyst. ●
Summarize and synthesize key findings
●
Write sections of the research report focused on qualitative findings, case studies, and participant narratives, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and ethical representation.
●
Contribute to revising and proofreading the entire research report.
Research and background work

●
Conduct literature reviews on relevant topics related to LGBTQ+ issues, violence and discrimination, and research methodologies in the Nile Valley region.

Prepare concise summaries of key findings from relevant research and reports.
●
Stay updated on current events and relevant developments in the region.
●
Identify and suggest additional resources or experts that could contribute to the research project.
Project support and logistics

Assist with data entry and cleaning as needed.

Prepare meeting materials and take minutes for team meetings and research partner meetings.

Perform administrative tasks as assigned, such as filing documents and maintaining project records.

A degree in a social science, data science, or proven research experience

Quantitative or qualitative research, data analysis
Technical Skills
Excellent quantitative, qualitative and desk research skills. Proficient in the use of data analysis/statistical software, report writing skills
Soft Skills
Organized, able to work independently with minimum supervision, flexible, possessing deep understanding of LGBTQ+ issues in the Nile Valley area
