Keeping Our Community Harmonious Throughout The Holidays

There is nothing cuter than a puppy playing in the freshly fallen leaves. As animal lovers we often look for great photo opportunities, especially around the holidays. We pose our pups with pumpkins and snap shots of kittens wrestling with Christmas ribbon. It’s just what we do. While many of us can’t imagine our precious pets ever being a nuisance, they can easily be bothersome to our neighbors if we don’t abide by Bentwater deed restrictions for animal control. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your pet doesn’t disturb your neighbors.

Please remember, your dogs must be leashed at all times when taking them on walks and they are not allowed to roam the neighborhood freely. This is not just a Bentwater restriction but a requirement, according to the Montgomery County leash law.

In May, 2012, Bentwater POA Board of Trustees adopted the following policy to address the issue of stray dogs and dog barking in Bentwater. Please review the policy and keep in mind, it was put into place just to help us insure we are doing all we can to be good neighbors and not allowing man’s best friend to become a nuisance to neighbors. ANIMAL CONTROL

No owner shall permit any dog, cat or other domestic pet under his ownership or control to be left unattended outside such Owner’s lot or allow such animal to engage in loud howling or barking, crying or whining or to conduct itself in such a manner so as to disturb the comfort and repose of any person inside the subdivision. Such pets must be housed inside the residence during the period of time the owner or person responsible for such pet is absent.

Co-owner of the shop, Kelly Cook, entertained them with an informative talk on what's "in" and what's "out" in the local antiques market. She and her daughter-in-law, co-owner Susan Cook, were very gracious and knowledgeable about the current market trends. Liberty Bell is best known for high-end French and English antiques. The two ladies also make beautiful pillows from vintage textiles. After the outing, the group toured Garrett House Antiques before gathering for lunch at The Pizza Shack.

Marlene Summers

Marlene Summers grew up on the Gulf Coast in Texas City and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, where she got her initial taste of competitive golf while playing on the inaugural Ladyjacks golf team in 1975. That’s where she met and married her college sweetheart. She and Bob have three children – David, Sherry, and Mary, who all live in Texas with their spouses. They are also proud grandparents of four little girls, with one more on the way next month, and one “grand-dog” (also a girl!)

Marlene has quite an impressive resume. She has been a dance team instructor and a gymnastics coach; and she started CCBG, Inc., a corporate gift company that serviced clients in the oil industry. In 2005 she was motivated to start a non-profit project supporting our Troops serving overseas. We will talk more about her well known military-support organization shortly; first let’s take a deeper look into her golf game, something also well known in Bentwater. She began playing golf when she was about 8 years old but admits she wasn’t sure she even liked the game. Gymnastics was her first love and golf seemed “too slow” for her. She quickly learned, however, playing golf meant she would get to spend more time with her dad and big brother. She never considered playing competitively until a pro, who saw her hitting balls on the range at SFASU, told her she should try out for the first ever ladies golf team on campus. She admits knowing nothing about competitive golf at the time but tried out for the team because she thought her dad would “get a kick out of it.” “Years later when the movie Tin Cup came out I could relate to Kevin Costner’s character on a personal level after my first collegiate tournament when I took a 12 on one hole!,” said Marlene. After college her competitive golf mostly went on the back burner to raise a family and support all three of her children, who played competitive golf throughout middle school, high school and college.

Grammy’s Cookie Convoy has shipped more than 200,000 cookies, cards and letters to the Troops. Marlene at the BW Club Championship in '09

During those years is when she and Bob learned about Bentwater. They joined Bentwater in 1987, before the clubhouse was built, to have a place to play golf. They soon decided to make Bentwater home so their children could receive the benefits of being in a smaller school district. “It was a big adjustment for all of us, but looking back it was one of the best decisions Bob ever made for our family,” she said. After her children were grown, Marlene found more time to practice her golf swing. We all know the phrase “practice makes perfect.” Let’s just say, her practice has certainly paid off. This is Marlene’s impressive golf resume:

Qualified for US Women’s Mid Amateur Championship (’09, ’10, ’12, ’13, & ’14) Qualified for US Sr. Women’s Amateur Championship (’10, ’11, ’12, ’14, & ’15) 2 Time Low Medalist at US Sr. Women’s Amateur Qualifier (’11, & ’12) Round of 32 at US Sr. Women’s Amateur Championship (’10) 2 Time State Senior Match Play Champion (’11, & ’14) 4 Time Texas Cup Team Member (’12, ’13, ’14, ’15) 8 Time Bentwater Club Champion (’04, ’05, ’06, ’08, ’09, ’10, ’12, & ’13) Runner Up Women’s Southern Senior Championship (’14) Runner Up Women’s State Senior Championship (’04) 5 Time Runner Up Houston City Sr. Amateur (’07, ’09, ’10, ’11, ’12) Top 30 Irish Sr. Women’s Amateur (’12)

Her success did not always come easy, however. At one point, in the midst of her golf career, she became very ill and was diagnosed with a rare muscle disorder. “If I am considered successful, it is only because of all the

amazing people the good Lord has put in my path. They have all touched my life in ways I could never have imagined.” she said. “It is the game of golf that has shared the most profound lessons with me and pushed me to keep going when quitting might have been a much easier choice.” And it was the game of golf that led to the creation of Grammy’s Cookie Convoy, Marlene’s non-profit supporting our military. While spending a few extra minutes hitting balls one day, she met Michael Johnson, a Bentwater employee who was picking up balls. He told her that he was being deployed to Iraq the following week. After meeting his family she began sending support to Michael and his buddies. Many months later she received an email sharing that morale among the troops was low and they were beginning to feel forgotten. “It was a heartbreaking email to receive, which prompted a prayer wishing there was something I could do just to let them know we were still thinking about them and praying for their safety,” she said. “My grandmother “Grammy,” and all the care packages full of her delicious chocolate chip cookies sent to me while I was away at college, came to mind. I decided I wanted the Troops to feel the same kind of love I felt from each bite of those wonderful cookies,” said Marlene. She immediately got to work. Grammy’s Cookie Convoy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit project that began in 2005. One

“Through this project my life has been touched beyond measure. I have been associated with some truly great individuals - from our heroes serving overseas - to the heroes back at home. I have learned so much about the hearts of great people,” she said. There’s no doubt Marlene has a heart of gold too. We thank you Marlene for all you do. You are truly a fascinating person of Bentwater. Dancer Receives

Artist-In-Residency Award

Montgomery County Food Bank relies on volunteers to help feed more than 32,000 people each month through a variety of tasks such as sorting food, assisting with office tasks and staff special events.

Bentwater residents Pat and Lou Potempa could not be more proud of their granddaughter Jacquelyne Boe.

Bentwater POA volunteers by being a designated food drop off site. Volunteering is a great way for you to make a difference too!

Boe has quite a resume as a dancer and choreographer. Since graduating high school 10 years ago from the High School of Performing Arts in Houston, Boe has studied and performed around the globe.

We found on the Montgomery County Food Bank’s website that there are several things you could do to lend a helping hand.

In 2009, she was named “Graduate of the Year” in the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma. Among her accomplishments, she went on to dance in Asuncion, Paraguay with the Austin Hartel Company and the National Ballet of Paraguay. She also taught dance at the University of Paraguay.

In 2014, Boe was chosen by the Houston Press as one of 100 Creative Individuals in Houston. And just this fall, she received a Dance Source Houston artist-in-residency award. She, along with four other dancers, is receiving free rehearsal space from September 2015 through June 2016 at the Barn in Houston. They are also gaining access to professional development workshops, grant-writing help and a shared performance opportunity next June. Boe is also a teacher at the Houston Ballet Academy and has received grant money to teach underprivileged kids.

Fall FUN FEST The Fall Fun Fest was a perfect blend of outdoor festival, boutique shopping and sports demos. We couldn’t have asked for a better day to get the neighborhood together for some family fun! Please keep an eye out for the December edition of Bentwater Life, as we will show you all the great photos taken at the Fall Fun Fest, which are sure to make you smile! The BLO, POA, MOB, BWYCC, and BCA worked together to sponsor the event.

• Food Fair Volunteers: Individuals and groups are asked to

join us in the community at a food distribution. Volunteers interact directly with those we serve and it is an amazing way to see the impact of your time. Food Fairs are typically held on Saturday mornings.

• Care & Share for Senior Volunteers: Individuals and groups

are needed to assist with sign-in and distribution of food to seniors throughout the community. Distributions occur typically during the week from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. throughout the community. To learn more about these opportunities, or to sign-up to help, please email the Montgomery County Food Bank volunteers@mcfoodbank.org.

Dear Property Owner:

As we enter into this holiday season, we look around our community, Montgomery and the entire county and see the warmth, peace, and generosity of others magnifying as the season grows. Each and every person we meet and know is in need of peace and goodwill, no matter their status or position. One specific area in which we can make an impact in our Bentwater community is through the association and relationship with our neighbors. Lifestyles and schedules have become so hectic that we may not have been able to take the opportunity to get to know those who live near us. Things we should all do as good neighbors include: • Waving or saying hello in passing • Introducing yourself to a neighbor you haven’t already met • Reaching out and offering assistance with different needs: helping with trash/recycling bins and keeping an eye on your neighbor’s house when he or she is away • Sharing a plate of holiday cookies or candy

An area where Bentwater shines with the spirit of goodwill is in our surrounding community. There are numerous charitable groups and community associations in which Bentwater property owners are involved, far too many to list them all. Shown below are only a few of the very many. They are not listed in the order of dollars or volunteer hours donated, they are simply a reflection of the big hearts in Bentwater: American Cancer Society American Diabetes Association American Heart Association American Legion American National Red Cross Bentwater United Way (The only United Way community in the country) Big Brothers, Big Sisters Boys and Girls Club Boys and Girls Country Boy Scouts of America Bridgewood Farms

CARTS

Please review the following information pertaining to the operation of golf carts within Bentwater.

The Bentwater Deed Restrictions restrict the use of the roads and street easements to 1. Motor vehicles currently licensed and inspected for use on public highways, and 2. Golf carts with a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club. The Deed Restrictions also require any person operating a golf cart, or any vehicle regardless of type, to hold a current driver’s license valid within the State of Texas. Any violation of these rules can result in sanctions against the property owner/ member, regardless of whether the member is operating their golf cart. After an initial warning, fines are assessed at

Country Club.

After a first violation, a golf cart permit may be revoked either temporarily or permanently. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these rules and to always operate your golf cart in a safe and responsible manner.

The BLO Holiday Home Tour tradition continues in the spirit of “inspired hearts give.” On two nights in December, residents will get the opportunity to tour five amazing Bentwater homes that are decorated beautifully for the Christmas season. This year, the gracious homeowners who are inviting us into their homes are: Kathe and Ken Cox Margaret and Rick Mattix Lynda and Robert Robinson Michelle and John Hoover Michael Tinberg

Each of these homeowners has chosen a charity near and dear to their heart to benefit from this year’s fundraiser. Money made

from each ticket will be donated to charities such as The Wounded Warrior Project and The Montgomery County Food Bank. Tickets can be purchased now at the Bentwater front office for $20 each; you may also purchase them on the nights of the Home Tour for $25 each. Don’t miss this great opportunity to share holiday cheer with neighbors and give back to five charitable organizations. Holiday Home Tour 2015 December 9 and 10 4 – 8 pm

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

November

When Nature Calls…

Contributed by Bentwater resident Bob Hook, POA Neighborhood Watch Program

Several years ago I wrote a monthly Neighborhood Watch article titled When Nature Calls. That article presented a simple Neighborhood Watch idea. As a follow up to my most recent monthly article, Reporting Crime and Safety Issues, I felt that the earlier article, When Nature Calls, is an idea worth sharing once again. The time is 3 a.m. and nature is calling. You climb out of bed and stumble to the bathroom. Then you decide to get a drink of water and off to the kitchen you go. Here is an idea: Before you return to bed, go to the front window and look outside to see if everything appears to be ok. If you happen to see someone slowly walking down the street or lurking around, a golf cart

slowly driving by, or an unfamiliar vehicle driving by or parked in a nearby driveway where the homeowner is out-of-town, get an accurate description of the person, golf cart or vehicle. If something doesn’t appear “right”, it usually isn’t. You should report the situation immediately. Contact law enforcement at 911 in an emergency, or the Montgomery County Sheriff ’s Office Non-Emergency line at 936.760.5800. Although some suspicious activity could have an innocent explanation, law enforcement would rather investigate the situation than be called when it is too late to prevent a crime. Your call may save a life, prevent an injury or stop a criminal act.

Use Your Garage First

This is a good time to remind everyone about the parking courtesies in our community. Bentwater residents should keep their vehicles parked in their garages at all times with the door closed. Refer to your deed restrictions. In Bentwater, the primary use for the garage is parking for vehicles, not used for storage. The Deed Restrictions also state garages are for parking vehicles and should not be used for the storage of boats, trailers or personal watercraft.

Online Guest Registration For Bentwater

Most homes in Bentwater have garage space for two vehicles. If your cleaned-out garage does not provide enough space to park all of your vehicles, you may park additional vehicles with decals in your driveway. You should not park a registered vehicle with a Bentwater decal in the street overnight. The POA will put a sticker on any vehicle with a Bentwater sticker if it is parked in the street, no exceptions. If a resident continues to park their vehicle in the street, day or night, on a permanent or semi-permanent basis, a fine will be implemented pursuant to the deed restrictions. Only guests of homeowners may park in the street overnight and only if there is no space for them in the homeowner’s driveway.

efore you begin you must create a contact in your personal email address book. Name the contact anything you like, however, the following email address must be in your contact list in order for you to receive the confirmation email: greeter@bentwaterent.com. Go to: bentwaterpoagate.com. Click on “Register New Account.” Type in Last Name, First Name, House Number and Street. Click box that says “I am not a robot.” Type in the two security words exactly as they appear with no space between them. Note: The street name must be spelled out exactly including Drive, Road, Court, West, Lane, etc. and it must match the last name according to POA records. This has been the most common problem reported by users. If you need help with this or any step please call Dickie at the POA office; 936-522-5532 or email bwentrance@fsresidential.com. Once verification is approved, a new page will appear with a banner that reads, “Sign Up for Your New Account.” You must fill in all of the fields. Proceed with creating a user name, password and establishing a security question and answer. Note: The password you choose must be 8 characters in length and include at least one upper case letter, one lower case letter and one number in any combination you choose. Write down the user name and password. After you submit your registration you will receive an email from the POA when your account is approved (you may not receive the notification email if you didn’t create the contact as indicated above). This can take up to three business days. After receiving this notification, you may log in and schedule passes for your guests. Note: In all cases you must fill in the names from left to right starting at the top. Day and extended passes, use the box under “Day and Extended.” List correctly the date of arrival and duration of your guests.

If for any reason you have a guest who is not going to arrive as planned, you can remove his/her name by clicking on “remove” beside their name. Update: If you need to change the arrival or ending date of an existing guest approval entry simply click on the appropriate date, select a new date from the drop down calendar and complete the change by clicking “Change.” Semi- Annual Passes- the Semi-Annual Guest List or Permanent List in on the right side of the page. Anyone you put on this list, upon announcing their name and yours to the greeter, will receive a six month pass and will be allowed to enter Bentwater at any time during that period, including times when you are not at home. This list should be very short and we want you to think of it as you would keys to your home. Once the pass is issued it can be difficult to retrieve. Other methods of registering guests:

SALUTING OUR Veterans

Every year on November 11, we take the time to honor our veterans. Even though we do our best to thank the men and women who have courageously fought for our country, it is so hard to put our gratitude into words. How do you thank someone for your freedom? There are really no words strong enough to express this amount of appreciation.

Bentwater is the home of numerous veterans. Some fought in World War II, others put their lives on the line in the Korean War or in Vietnam, and some more recently served our country in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, or Somalia.

We should never forget or take for granted the sacrifices that these men and women have made, and the ultimate sacrifices others made, who never made it home. Take the time this Veterans’ Day to shake the hands of veterans and tell them how much you appreciate their selfless acts of love. We now salute all Bentwater residents and their families who are United States veterans. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your service.

entwater members Jim and Connie Landgraf, Scott and Karen Walker, John and Karen Cutrer, and Mike and Liz Jones recently circled Ireland and Northern Ireland in search of craic. (Craic is a Gaelic word for fun times and entertainment.) Combining golf and sightseeing over the course of 14 days, they played seven “links” courses and visited many of the wonderful Irish sites. Traveling in a large bus with plenty of room for people, luggage and golf bags made the trip stress free. They had a great driver/tour guide who managed to get them to all of their hotels, golf courses and sites without a hitch. A group of 28 Bentwater friends and neighbors recently enjoyed the adventure of a lifetime on a cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, and most countries in Scandinavia. The cruise began in Amsterdam, where the group boarded the beautiful Celebrity Silhouette for 12 days of entertainment, sightseeing and gourmet cuisine. In addition to St. Petersburg, the cruise itinerary included visits to Germany (Warnemunde - from where many visited Berlin), Estonia (Tallinn), Finland (Helsinki), Sweden (Stockholm) and Denmark (Copenhagen).

The next morning the group boarded a river boat for a panoramic private tour of the major sites of St. Petersburg from the perspective of the Neva River. The group then traveled to Peterhof for a tour of the Grand Palace and Lower Park - with its incredible fountains, built by Peter the Great. Returning to St. Petersburg via hydrofoil, the group visited St. Isaac’s Cathedral, then after lunch enjoyed a private tour of the famous Hermitage, which included the Diamond Room and its many incredible treasures of Russian royalties.

This was followed by a visit inside the iconic Church on the Spilled Blood with its nearly 80,000 square feet of beautiful mosaic, built on the site where Czar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. After a traditional and entertaining Russian lunch at the Podvorye Restaurant, a favorite of Russian celebrities - including Vladimir Putin, the group traveled on to Pushkin for an extensive afternoon tour of the Catherine Palace and its beautifully landscaped gardens. That evening the group enjoyed a traditional Russian folklore show at the Nikolayevsky Palace.

Know that it is because our military continues to stand on the front lines, not just at borders of our own soil, but also on the soil of weaker nations, helping to extend and strengthen the freedom around the world. If you are a veteran, or know of a veteran who lives in Bentwater, whose name has not been listed in Bentwater Life, please let us know.

If you are a current or former member of our military, we would like to add you to our register. Contact: dawn.cleboski@ fsresidential.com or 936.597.5532.

How To Survive

THANKS GIVING

DIET ON A

diet over 24 weeks lost 62 percent more weight than those who supplemented with complex carbohydrates. Not nuts over nuts? Go for olive oil and bread. Even two teaspoons of olive oil on bread can also cut cravings when eaten 20 minutes before a meal.

BE THE MAN (OR WOMAN) WITH A PLAN. Come armed and

dangerous to the Thanksgiving buffet with a plan. Don’t be afraid to use a smaller plate. By doing so, you will choose less and eat less. Think about your food choices. Pack on the protein (say yes to the turkey or ham) and slow down on the refined carbohydrates, starches and empty calories. Don’t forget the veggies either; these fiber-filled vegetables pack a punch. Dark leafy greens are teeming with Vitamin A, C, K, as well as folate and iron. Opt for water or tea instead of the alcohol and save your valuable calories for the pumpkin pie, which is packed with beta carotene. During eating, put your fork down between bites. Finally focus on your family. Engage in meaningful conversation. After all, family is what Thanksgiving is all about!

WHAT IF I OVERINDULGE? What if the mashed potatoes get

the best of you or the apple cobbler was too tempting to pass up? Burn off those extra calories by walking around the mall on Black Friday. Or make the treadmill your friend as you work off those calories once again.Happy Thanksgiving! It’s one day a year – why not overindulge and hit the gym later? You have waited 365 days for turkey with stuffing and an extra helping of that succulent sweet potato casserole. But wait – you’re on a diet. What are you to do?

CREATE A CALORIE DEFICIT. Even if it is Thanksgiving, it is important for your fitness routine not to fall by the wayside. Create a calorie deficit with heart-pumping cardio and even resistance training. The American Council on Exercise encourages gymgoers to stick to a moderate-intensity aerobic workout before a big meal. Why is that? You don’t want to deplete your storage of glycogen, causing you to feast upon food as if you are famished! By taking it easy at the gym, you can utilize body fat as fuel (sparing your reserve of glycogen). In turn, you will feel energized but not starving. If you want to lift weights, don’t go heavy. Choose longer rest periods between sets with light to moderate weights.

HAVE A SNACK BEFOREHAND. Yes, you read that right. Even if you are an avid calorie counter, a snack before Thanksgiving dinner can actually save you calories in the end. Go for a satiating snack, such as almonds and top it off with water. Almonds are known for promoting fullness. By feeling satisfied before the big meal, you will consume less calories. Keep in mind that almonds are full of monounsaturated fats (MUFA), as well as fiber. MUFAs benefit your health. In a study in the International Journal of Obesity, participants who supplemented almonds to their low calorie
