about the sponsorship index As you probably know, the Bentwater Life monthly magazine is supported solely by the sponsors who contribute to make the publication free to all of the residents. Of course, their intention is to be considered for the goods and services they provide, when you should need them. It has been noted several times that the readership is very high and that is why the publication has been successfully partnering with the POA for more than six years. Please keep all of these sponsors in mind whenever you have need of any of the goods and services they supply and let them know you appreciate their support of your community.

If you know any other business owners who you think would benefit by sponsoring space in this magazine, please let us know. Thank you for reading Bentwater Life and thank you for all of the kind comments we receive each month. animal control Bentwater is a pet-friendly community, but we like to remind you from time to time that it is our responsibility as pet owners to make sure our pets are not being a nuisance and disturbing neighbors. Please remember, your dogs must be leashed at all times when taking them on walks and they are not allowed to roam the neighborhood freely. This is not just a Bentwater restriction but a requirement, according to the Montgomery County leash law. In May 2012, Bentwater POA Board of Trustees adopted the following policy to address the issue of stray dogs and dog barking in Bentwater.

Be A Good Neighbor

Please review the policy and keep in mind, it was put into place just to help us ensure we are doing all we can to be good neighbors and not allowing man’s best friend to become a nuisance to neighbors. Animal Control No owner shall permit any dog, cat or other domestic pet under his ownership or control to be left unattended outside such Owner’s lot or allow such animal to engage in loud howling or barking, crying or whining or to conduct itself in such a manner so as to disturb the comfort and repose of any person inside the subdivision. Such pets must be housed inside the residence during the period of time the owner or person responsible for such pet is absent.

time A Lesson in

bentwater antiques club

Members of the Bentwater Antiques Club were recently treated to a talk by renown clock expert and Antiques Roadshow Appraiser Ralph Pokluda, one of the owners of Houston’s Chappell Jordan Clock Galleries – the largest clock store in the southern United States. Sharing his passion for clocks and unparalleled knowledge of virtually anything that ticks, Ralph came to Bentwater and spoke about the history of clocks and the state of the antique’s market in general. He also gave members a fascinating peek inside the Antiques Roadshow. Several members brought clocks for Ralph to appraise. These included an American-made Seth Thomas mantle clock and a few high-end French clocks from the early 1800s, including one encased in white Carrera marble. Members enjoyed lunch at the Country Club following the meeting.

Lisa Shumate of the Houston Public Media enthralled the Bentwater Ladies Organization members at a recent meeting as she talked about being both in front of the camera and behind the scenes in the media field. As Associate Vice President and General Manager, Shumate is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Houston Public Media, which includes TV 8 /PBS, News 88.7, NPR and Classical. These outlets reach a combined weekly audience of more than 1.5 million in the Houston area and are focused on delivering highquality, local, regional and national content in the areas of news and information, arts and culture and education. Shumate engaged the audience as she talked about the challenges and opportunities she faces. Houston Public Media’s ongoing operation is made possible through the generous support of members, sponsors and underwriters through the Houston Public Media Foundation, a non-profit. She said 60 percent of the budget for Houston Public Media comes from donations, so having people donate or become sponsors is critical.

In a show of hands, most of the crowd acknowledged that they do not watch live TV most of the time. Shumate said that also causes challenges for their operation, as if someone is watching one of the PBS shows, such as "Downton Abbey," on services like Netflix, it does not help the organization’s revenue. Houston Public Media utilizes its broadcast and online outlets to provide audiences with unprecedented access to the content that is meaningful to them – on air, online, at home and everywhere they go, and is built on 60 years of success in public radio and television, including TV 8’s distinction as the nation’s first educational public television station. Throughout its history, Houston Public Media has remained committed to service which educates children, informs citizens and lifts the spirits of the community.

Houston Public Media’s goal, through quality content, is to serve as the catalyst that takes audiences beyond the ordinary, beyond Houston and beyond the world they know. The organization is a community service of the University of Houston. Judith Jandel, Thelma Miller, Sandy Wagner, Ann Franklin

Judge Wayne Mack is a man of great faith, family and community outreach.

He often asks others around him to make a difference each and every day and reminds youth that bad decisions have consequences. It was this message that the Bentwater Volunteer Families had the opportunity to hear at the February membership drive meeting. Phyllis Prange and Bobbie Collins

Family Owned & Operated

Judge Mack began his career in the building maintenance department of Montgomery County. A strong work ethic and dedication led Judge Mack to rapid promotion in his career and finally landing in his current position. Having been elected in 2014, Wayne Mack is Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1, Justice Court 1 of Montgomery County. In the courtroom, he sees youth of all ages, backgrounds and socioeconomic status. If a teen is meeting Judge Mack in his courtroom it is because they have made a bad decision that most likely can impact their future. He also warned the students about the dangers of driving too fast, as well as the drug problem that faces all schools in Montgomery County.

Finally, with bullying being an epidemic, he wanted to impress upon the students, the notion that everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about. Be kind, be a voice and be a leader. Judge Mack applauded the students for taking this giant step in leadership by being a part of a service organization. In other news:

Now enrolling for Summer!

Bentwater Volunteer Families recently partnered with Grammy’s Cookie Convoy and helped create the mailing labels for care packages. This proved to be a big support and when it was time to mail the packages, the work that can take up to eight hours, was accomplished in about an hour and a half. Teamwork pays off!

Golf Carts

Bentwater is a great place for golf cart traveling. We have the most beautiful courses to play and nice, wide paths for the commute. If you own and operate a golf cart in Bentwater, however, you must do so responsibly. There are certain Deed Restrictions you must understand.

You may only drive a golf cart in Bentwater if it has a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club. The Deed Restrictions also require any person operating a golf cart, or any vehicle regardless of type, to hold a current driver’s license valid within the State of Texas. A Deed Restriction Violation notice and a corresponding fine

may be received if the cart is not operated within the deed restrictions. First Violation

$100

Second and Subsequent Violations

$500

After a First Violation a golf cart permit may be revoked either temporarily or permanently. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these rules and to always operate your golf cart in a safe and responsible manner. And remember - use our cart paths anytime possible. They are for your safety and the safety of others.

Room For Your Business: If your medical or professional office is looking for space Lone Star Professional Plaza is the place to be. Call 713-974-6700 for details and leasing rates.

Deed Restrictions Every now and then we receive comments from residents who have received a deed restriction violation notice. Please remember: We recognize that no one wants to receive a deed restriction violation. If restrictions are consistently enforced home values will typically be at their optimum.

20 Bentwater Life • April 2017

The POA always strives to enforce the deed restrictions in a friendly, courteous manner. We thank you for your cooperation in resolving the issue. We love our community and want to do all we can to keep it the beautiful neighborhood you chose to call home. We thank you for your support.

“Celebrating the Classics” Co n r o e S y m p h o n y O r c h e s t r a P r e s e n t s

Saturday, April 22, 7:30 P.M.

The Conroe Symphony Orchestra is gearing up for its fourth concert of the season, "Celebrating the Classics.”

ER nurse Kathryn Howard, Dr. Freddy Martinez and Child Life Specialist Marni McGough in front of a Life Flight helicopter during their visit to MH Woodlands for their 40th anniversary.

The 4-1-1 on Fever: How to Treat It and When to See a Doctor Close to one-third of parents who bring their children to the ER come with a common concern: an abnormally high body temperature. Although fever can be frightening to parents, doctors rarely consider an elevated temperature dangerous in an otherwise healthy child. “Many parents are concerned that fever will cause brain damage, but it’s a natural process of the body,” says Alfred ‘Dr. Freddy’ Martinez, M.D., medical director of the Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric ER at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital. “There’s a good rule of thumb for fevers: If it doesn’t bother your child, it shouldn’t bother you. Be vigilant for worsening signs and symptoms. When children are not eating and are clearly uncomfortable, focus first on making sure they drink plenty of fluids.” To lower a child’s temperature, physicians recommend giving an age-based dose of either acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Advil® or Motrin®). Avoid a combination of medications, such as back-to-back acetaminophen and ibuprofen due to the danger of overdose. Aspirin should be avoided unless recommended by your doctor for a specific condition. Parents who want to cool their child with a sponge bath should use tepid water and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen at least 30 minutes before bathing. “Either medication will help reset the body’s natural thermostat,” affiliated pediatric emergency specialist Dr. Martinez says. “On the average it can take up to 60 minutes to see an effect, with the peak effect three or four hours later.”

The symphony, currently in the middle of its 20th Anniversary Season, will be under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Dr. Don Hutson. The highly anticipated spring concert will feature music for all ages, including: "Dance of the Comedians" by Smetana, "Adagio in G Minor" by Albioni, "Sandpaper Ballet" by Leroy Anderson, "William Tell Overture" by Rossini, "Throne Room & Finale from Star Wars" by John Williams and "Miller’s Dance from Three-Cornered Hat" by Manuel de Falla, just to name a few. At this concert, young pianist Steven Dong will perform Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, accompanied by the full orchestra.

Steven is a 16-year-old junior at Clear Lake High School in Houston. Starting piano lessons at the age of five, he won the MTNA state competition in 2011 in his home state of Iowa. Under his current piano teacher, Mr. John Weems, Steven has won first place recognition at the Houston Forum Young Artist Competition in 2013 and 2014 and top awards in the TMTA state competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Last year, he collected top prizes at the Clear Lake Symphony Concerto Competition, the Texas State University Young Artist Competition, the Paul Schmitt Piano Competition and the Austin Music Festival Competition. “Celebrating the Classics” on April 22 will be a night for the entire family to enjoy great music from our

local Conroe Symphony Orchestra! Ticket And Venue Information

All Conroe Symphony Orchestra concerts are held at Conroe High School, located at 3200 W. Davis Street (SH 105) in Conroe. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children, ages 12 and under. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased at the Conroe Symphony Centre, 1500 N Frazier #3, in Conroe (please call for hours) or may be ordered by calling the Symphony Centre at 936-7602144. Tickets for the performances will also be available at the door prior to each concert.

Dr. Martinez recommends at a minimum that parents seek a doctor’s care for their child in the following circumstances:

Age Group

Temperature/Symptoms

Infant Less Than 3 Months Old

Rectal temp of 100.4° F+

Child 3 Months Old to 3 Years Old

• Rectal temp of 100.4° F+ for 3+ days • Rectal temp of 102° F+ • If they’re fussy, ‘clingy’ or refuse to drink fluids after you attempt to bring the fever down

Any Child

• Oral, rectal, ear or forehead temp of 104° F+ • Armpit temp of 103° F+ • Fever with a seizure, rash or bloody diarrhea • Fever for 7+ days • Fever with a chronic medical condition

“We created our newly designed, dedicated Pediatric ER to be a child-centered experience with a different look and feel,” Dr. Martinez says. “The staff here is specially trained in the Child Life art of connecting with children, and the ER doctors work hard to make it a fun experience for the child – as pain-free and minimally invasive as possible.” Be certain to communicate with your primary care doctor first, but know that the Children’s Memorial Hermann Pediatric ER is here when you need us. For a physician referral, call Memorial Hermann at 713.222.CARE (2273).

Property Owner:

North Shore C hurch For men and women who have experienced the death of a loved one, North Shore Church offers help, hope and encouragement through its GriefShare support group. The next session is May 1 - July 24 and will be held every Monday from 6 – 7:30 P.M. Those interested can join at any time and there is no charge to attend. North Shore Church is located at Bentwater’s west gate. For more information, call 936.597.7000.

Springtime is a great time for new beginnings. As we welcome spring flowers and warmer weather, we often welcome new residents to our wonderful community this time of year. I encourage each of you to do your part in making our new residents feel at home. Perhaps you have neighbors who are not new to the community but you haven’t met them yet. Now is your time to shine and show others in Bentwater what it means to be a great neighbor. Here are a few tips to being a great neighbor:

· Be mindful of the noise level coming from your residence, whether it is music or barking dogs. Everyone is entitled to the peaceful and quiet enjoyment of their home.

· Help out as needs arise. This may be as simple as bringing the trash or recycling can from the street to the garage area on pick-up days or keeping an eye out for something amiss when a neighbor is out of town.

· Invite your neighbors for lunch or dinner at the club or to join in any of the myriad of activities in the community. It’s a good way to get to know one another.

· Continue to drive through the community adhering to speed limits (35 mph on Bentwater Drive, 25 mph on all other streets); look out for your neighbors, their family members and guests by keeping the streets friendly and safe. · Keep your pets leashed when off your property and pick up after them. Remember, some of your neighbors may be allergic to or fearful of animals.

· Continue to keep your lawn and landscaping maintained, including weed treatment. · Host a potluck at your home for families on your block and get to know each other, establishing a friendship that hopefully will last for years to come.

We encourage you to continue to develop the warmth of Bentwater life by extending your hand in friendship to your neighbors.

Mariels Meat Market

This community is filled with people whose thoughtful hearts reach out and raise the standard of quality, warmth and excellence that is a significant component to the DNA of Bentwater. Having neighbors as friends is part of Bentwater life!

Dawn Cleboski Best Regards,

· Ensure your guests and contractors do not block your neighbors’ driveways when they come to visit you.

Three Amazing Shows Raise Nearly $100k For Cancer Research Keith Ann Gearn

The eighth year of Bentwater City Limits began like previous years. The call was put out to the BCL singers as well as an invitation to those who wanted to join our band of merry men and women. We would find songs for soloists, duets and ensembles. We would find songs that were familiar and popular from the sixties, seventies and eighties. We would find fast songs, ballads, country and western, rock and roll and love songs. We would create a show that would be funny, happy, sentimental, moving and unifying. Whew...so, we began.

As members came together, we strengthened our voices, singing mightily two times a week in my home. Members received CDs with possible songs for 2017, so they could practice at home and in their cars. We practiced ABBA, Michael W. Smith, Simon & Garfunkel and other full chorus songs until we knew them by heart. Then, the small groups and solos began to take shape. We could tell, it was going to be a great show! But we knew, lots more practice was needed. We needed to add instruments and we were up to 57 people. My living room was bursting at the seams! We were so blessed when Bentwater said we could use the Yacht Club bar to rehearse. We filled the bar each week as the sounds of Lyle Lovett, Peter, Paul and Mary, Frank Sinatra and others were heard by the cleaning and maintenance crews. Did we see them dancing? Hmmm. Yes, the music was timeless, and we were timeless, as well. Such fun to sing these great songs for such a great cause. We all knew why we were there. Each one had a heart to raise funds for cancer research. Some in our

group were going through chemotherapy and some had close friends and family battling cancer. One singer was losing his brother to cancer during our performances. Countless friends were remembered each week as we spoke of how our lives had been affected by this disease. We were committed.

Director Keith Ann Gearne and Bob Chiste, emcee

In addition to the two full rehearsals, the musicians had band rehearsals each Saturday and the small groups worked throughout the week on their songs. There was no shortage of rehearsals! The week of the performance we officially moved into the Yacht Club. Mariano and his crew set up the stage. John Ward brought his lighting equipment. Kent Holder, Steve and Jerry set the sound and we were ready for our technical rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday’s dress rehearsal was extra special for us. Each year there are some who are unable to attend our show because of travel or treatments, so we invite them to our dress rehearsal. We were so thrilled that Katy Tucker was able to get back from treatment in time to sing along with us. She is one of BCL’s biggest April 2017 • Bentwater Life

fans, always the first one up to dance to the music between the tables. It was her 11th anniversary of her first chemotherapy treatment and we wanted to surprise her with a party. So, a cake was baked and we sang Happy Anniversary to this amazing woman. She exemplifies why we sing. It was joyous for us all.

Easter Eggstravaganza

Bentwater City Limits 2017 was again privileged to have Bob Chiste emcee our show. His ability to make us laugh is well known and he has worked hard for us in past years to raise money for cancer research. He shared how two of his friends are losing their battle with cancer and how that was changing his world. This year Bob worked with the American Cancer Society and Houston Texans owner Bob McNair to create levels of giving to our specific project called Hope Lodge. Hope Lodge will be built at the Texas Medical Center in Houston to give families a place to stay for free while patients are in treatment. Our lofty goal was to “sponsor” one of the 68 suites at $50,000.

Saturday, April 15 Bentwater POA is hard at work planning a fun-filled Easter celebration. Grab the Easter baskets and head to the Park in the Meadows for an egg hunt, refreshments and other fun family activities. Who knows… we may even have a special visit from the Easter Bunny!

Bentwater, as well as others, opened their hearts and their wallets and, amazingly donated almost $100,000 in the three nights of Bentwater City Limits 2017.

Bentwater Easter Celebration Saturday, April 15 11 A.M. Park in the Meadows

“Friends of BCL” donors hope to sponsor two suites! We were overwhelmed with tears and joy as the totals were announced each night. The BCL team, the band, Lynda Robinson, Betty Lou Morgan, Michele Chiste, and all who worked tirelessly for this event understood the importance of our effort. Thank you, Bentwater, for your support. You recognized that the only stars in BCL 2017 are the ones fighting this disease and the ones who have lost their battle. You understand the importance of each event that Bentwater creates in order to give to research and service to Montgomery County. You willingly give from your hearts.

welcome

Ann Kate

Valentine’s Day came early for North Shore Republican Women members and guests at the February 1 meeting. Judge Tracy Gilbert of the 418th District Court upheld his yearly tradition of giving a red rose to every woman who was there. We always appreciate his thoughtfulness. One of the key topics at the meeting was the October 2 “United We Stand” Golf Tournament the club is planning at April Sound Country Club. It’s the first time NSRW has attempted such a large fundraiser and we’re excited about it. We’re going to have amazing prizes and a barbecue at the end of the day. There will be sponsorships available for those wanting to help us with the costs of putting it on. Bentwater resident Kim Greene is overall chairman of the event. Contact her if you’d like to contribute or help on one of the committees. NSRW meets the first Wednesday of each month at Bentwater Yacht Club. For more information, go to the website www.nsrepublicanwomen.org, or Facebook at North Shore Republican Women/TX.

Bentwater welcomes new resident,

11-year-old Wyatt Osborne.

neighborhood watch

Bike Safety Warmer weather is here and for those who enjoy getting out for a bike ride, here are a few safety tips to protect yourself and your loved ones from a bicycle accident.

Wyatt and his family recently moved to Bentwater. He is a fifth grader at Montgomery Intermediate School and is a straight-A student. While he loves math, his favorite subject is recess! Wyatt also loves eating tacos and living on the lake. His older brother, Jonathan, is 13 years old, in the seventh grade and loves playing football. We are excited to have the Osborne family in Bentwater!

Perform a pre-ride safety inspection of your bike before you head out for a ride. · Check tires for proper inflation · Check the brakes · Check your headlight to make sure it is properly working 1. Wear a bicycle helmet and brightly colored clothing during daylight hours and reflective garments at night. 2. Concentrate and be alert. Talking on a cell phone and wearing any sort of headphones or earbuds should be avoided while riding on all roadways. 3. Watch out for any kind of road hazards such as potholes, broken glass, puddles of water and dogs. All of these can be hazardous and can cause an accident. 4. Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and road markings. Always go in the direction of traffic. 5. Before making a turn, look on both sides and behind you for cars, then signal before making the turn. Watch for left or right turning traffic. 6. Bicycles ridden at night should have a light on the front and a red rear reflector or red flashing rear safety light. 7. When stopped at an intersection where there are cars, don’t try to pass a motorist and get ahead of the car. Even if you are an experienced cyclist, it is a good idea to review the above safety tips periodically. You may want to review them with younger cyclists in your family.
