of students, particularly youth riders. Addressing issues is appropriate but do it humbly. A statement such as “I prefer to accomplish that task this way, and here’s why” creates a far more educational moment than name-calling or criticizing. Humility is the key to respecting others’ opinions. When we are so convinced of our beliefs that we discount even the possibility of someone else having an equally valid outlook, we exalt our thinking above everyone else’s. “I can’t be wrong!” this mentality shouts. “If you don’t agree with me, you’re not as smart/informed/enlightened as me!” How is anyone helped by such a mindset? Please don’t misunderstand me—it is good to have a well-rooted stance on moral issues and to exercise our freedom to disagree with someone else’s logic, emotional response, or code of ethics. These things are necessary for strengthening our character and sharpening our intellect. But if we fail to consider other positions on issues that fall beyond the moral umbrella, we take an unrealistic view of our own fallibility and actually atrophy our critical thinking skills. Next time you are faced with an opinion that differs from your own, think twice before countering. If the exchange is in person, ask questions (kindly) to develop an understanding of the other person’s position. Chances are much higher that they will be open to talking about your thoughts if you first express interest in theirs. If the interaction is online...well, think VERY carefully before getting involved. Social media communications have a penchant for quickly devolving into keyboard skirmishes, and thanks to screen shot capabilities the conversations can be preserved for anyone to see even if you delete your post. Cameo’s cauldron … in which Cameo Miller stirs her thoughts and ideas to see what rises to the top.

So why am I writing about relationships in a magazine for riding instructors? Because we are more than just riding instructors. We have more relationships than just our professional ones. Relationships that help make up the totality of who we are. Because we are people with important relationships in our lives that we need to remember to value and nurture. The times we spend with each other throughout the year is often much more important than attending a prescribed day to be together. It is all of these times that truly build a relationship into what it is now and what it can become in the future. It is all the times over all the years that build the foundation of a relationship and determine how towering and important it will be. Special get togethers like holidays and birthdays, births and even funerals, and family reunions can be embellishments on the tower we build with others. For some, Thanksgiving and Christmas means that everyone makes a special effort to be together. That even if most of the year people are busy with separate lives, these two days are set aside to be with those who are special to us. That gives these holidays true importance to many. But we also know that, for some people, these large family gatherings are more misery than blessing. For them, the imperative is a burden. For them, we

are also reminded that the ‘families’ we create can be as, or even more, important that the ones we are born into. A thought to consider is that, perhaps, traveling during traditional get together holidays is not best right now—too many people crowding together, too much stress due to delays and high prices, too many expectations from whatever source. Perhaps we should reassess. What if instead of traveling now when society dictates for us to get together—we plan to go another time or other times

We, in our profession, are lucky because most of us have still been able to be with the animals that we have the closest relationships to. And because most of our activities are outside, or at least with distancing built in, we have an easier time to continue and further our relationships with professional friends and students. That just means it is easier to maintain these relationships, not that it is any less

important that we continue to make them priorities too. The last two years have been a difficult struggle for most everyone. But they may have been instrumental in reminding us about what things are really important and, perhaps, this enforced separation has helped us to more clearly recognize how important some people are in our lives. How important making time to actually have contact with them is. That there are more important things than meeting dictated expectations of others or that things have to be done as they always were in the past. We all get to decide who is important, whether that is biological family, created family, close friends or even acquaintances. So why am I writing about relationships in a magazine for riding instructors? To help all of you remember to make time to be with all who are important to you—because that will be so good for you in the long run. Yes, just a bit. Though the surrounding landscape can become a Christmas card-like wonderland, for many, the lack of sunshine and warmth isn´t fun or nice. I say this as the sole survivor of a household of people who suffered from the “winter blues”, a recognized disorder that I do not belittle at all - I am just grateful I don´t suffer from it. So I learned to hold back my glee at the first feel of winter´s approach. Nobody appreciated when I would rush in, rednosed and bright-eyed, to announce that I just saw the first snowflake. “Thanks for the weather report, Miss Pumpkin Spice. If you say another word meteorologically until spring I´ll pumpkin spice you!” So I would just tread lightly for the duration, all the while pondering why winter-hating persons would move to Minnesota. So yes, I´ve always been one of the winter lovers, not just for the holidays, snow sports and the après everything cosies and tipples. I mostly love it for its quiet, the longer nights and its deep call to hunker down and go within. I don´t just love winter, I need winter. Nature, in her wisdom, planned her seasons with reason and expects us to take heed. Henry David Thoreau wrote in his August 23, 1853 journal entry: “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each”. Mr. Thoreau so understood it, having spent over a year in

That in itself is very liberating as the pressure is off. It’s a time to do things I really want to do, like crafting, take some online courses, or catch up on my reading. Contrary to what you might think as an inexperienced rider, this is the worst foot placement. Instead, only the sole of your feet should be

This is because your hands are your only source of steering the high-speed beast you’re riding. Therefore, in trying to control your balance, you might lose control of the horse by flailing your arms in the air. So, what’s the best way of maintaining your balance along with control on your horse? First of all, place your hands at your hips. Next, focus on stabilizing your seat rather than your hands, and you’ll be good to go.

Improper Riding Attitude Riding a horse is a daunting and demanding hobby. Accordingly, it would help if you also had the right attitude and noted some tips. When you climb up the saddle, drop your ego on the ground. Try to be patient with your horse and yourself as well. If you get too demanding and frustrated, you might risk making your horse tense. Furthermore, you won’t be able to enjoy the ride either. If you lack patience, you might lose the motivation to continue your horse-riding journey as well.

Final Words When you embark on your horse-riding journey, it’ll take a little time to find your stride. In addition, you must get in tune with your horse and be patient with it because they match your energy. Moreover, getting acquainted with your horse will help you learn faster and enjoy the journey as well. Remember, consistency and time are essential to achieve pro-level riding skills.

severe and dangerous types of abdominal pain that you can encounter in your barn. These basically include the displacement of the intestines and their changing of position, which can lead to the loss of blood supply to the intestines (strangulation). These often require surgical interference where the veterinarian aims to restore the original position of the intestine. This type of colic is able to kill the horse if not immediately identified and treated.

Dealing with colic The treatment of colic cases depends on the type and severity of the colic. But there are certain critical practices that you should follow in your barn when you encounter a colic case which you can use while the veterinarian gets to you. As mentioned before, colic can cause horses to lie on the ground and roll themselves, this is not exactly a harmful behavior, but it can lead to severe injuries. So the first thing you need to do is to take your horse out of their box and place them in the field. Secondly, the most important thing is to remove any food from your horse’s reach as it can make their situation more difficult. Another practice you can perform is to walk your horse for a certain period of time to enhance intestinal movement and distract them from the pain. This practice is very beneficial for cases of gas and impaction colic. The horse’s walking will facilitate the passage

A Pony’s Wish List By Lydia Fairchok

Every young riding student knows that horses and ponies have Christmas wishes, too...why not let them help fill in the lists? We have a December tradition of hanging a blank list on each horse’s door. At our Christmas barn gettogether, I fill a paper lunch sack with slips that include all manner of things that a horse might want, plus some truly silly suggestions. Students take turns drawing out a slip and attaching it to a horse’s wish list. As part of the fun, they must explain to the group why they think that horse would choose that thing. You will learn a lot about your students’ perception of your horses as you listen! For example: “Orion would ask for 100 carrots because he is always hungry!” “Sadie would ask for a day at the spa because she likes mud.” “Maggie would ask for another pony so she wouldn’t be the only one small enough to get picked on.” After the pre-made slips have been doled out, students can fill in extra blanks with their own ideas. This leads to even more merriment as the peerless logic of children is applied to the purported desires of horsekind. When one of my students added “Port-a-potty” to the pony’s wish-list, I could not wait to hear what her reasoning was. She explained that Maggie would appreciate a private place to use the bathroom while outside--a thought process that was based on the fact that every time we bring the pony in for a lesson, the first thing she does is urinate in her stall. Below is a wish-list template and a ready-to-print sheet of items.
